Speaker Biographies
Peter Kendall
President, National Farmers Union
Peter Kendall farms in Eyeworth, East Bedfordshire, in partnership
with his brother Richard. Over the last 15 years, the farm has
evolved from a very traditional mixed farm to a totally arable unit.
Peter took a degree in Agricultural Economics at Nottingham
University, before returning to the family business in 1984.
Previously Chairman of NFU Cereals and NFU Deputy President, he
was elected President in 2006 and is now mid-way through his third term.
Peter sits on a range of bodies in the UK and Europe, including IGD’s Policy Issues Council,
the Technology Strategy Board Sustainable Agri-Food IP Steering Group and the Copa-Cogeca
Food Chain working party, which he chairs.
At the top of his list of priorities is ensuring that the central role of commercial agriculture
and horticulture in tackling the dual challenges of food security and climate change – and
the pressing need for the sustainable intensification of agriculture – is recognised by those
in power in the UK and Europe.
Paul Conway OBE
Vice Chairman, Cargill Inc.
Paul Conway became Vice Chairman in June 2011 and has been
a member of Cargill’s Leadership Team since October 2006.
He was elected to Cargill’s Board of Directors in September 2008.
He joined Cargill from Law School in 1979 and held a number
of merchandising roles in the UK, USA and Switzerland before
becoming a Division Head of UK corn processing in 1989.
Throughout the 1990s he worked in the European processing businesses, becoming
Executive Vice President of Cargill’s European food processing businesses in 1997.
In 2006 he moved to Asia as President/Regional Director. In 2009 he relocated from Asia
to the UK.
Jim Moseley
President, Food & Drink Federation
and Regional Managing Director, General Mills
Jim Moseley has spent over 35 years in the food and drink
industry.
He started his career with FMC Meat Ltd – at the time Europe’s
largest meat group. Jim then joined Ovaltine manufacturer
Wander Foods, where he was responsible for the UK launch of
the sports drink Isostar. Recruited by Tulip International as the Sales and Marketing Director,
Jim spent 12 years with the group before moving to General Mills UK (formerly Pillsbury) in
1999 as the Managing Director.
Today Jim is responsible for a broad portfolio of high profile brands including amongst
others Häagen-Dazs, Old El Paso, Green Giant and Nature Valley in the UK, Ireland and the
Nordic markets.
In addition Jim has served as the Chairman of The Provision Trade Federation, is currently
President of the Food & Drink Federation and is a Board member of FoodDrinkEurope
(formerly CIAA).
Martin Whittingham
Director, Kantar Worldpanel
Martin Whittingham worked in grocery retail for 18 years, later
joining Safeway and Morrisons. He worked across a range of
insight functions in the Marketing and Trading division of Safeway
and oversaw some significant changes from the late 1980s
through to the 1990s and was involved in many of the major
retail initiatives.
Martin joined Worldpanel in 2004 and is responsible for all the UK grocery retailers, the
Ireland Worldpanel business and health and beauty manufacturers.
Carl Mortished (seminar moderator/facilitator)
Partner, Kreab Gavin Anderson
Carl Mortished is a partner at Kreab Gavin Anderson, a global
communications consultancy.
In a career spanning financial journalism and investment banking,
he acquired a deep knowledge of the commodities markets and
world trade. Prior to joining Kreab Gavin Anderson, he was for
18 years with The Times as World Business Editor where he
led coverage in natural resources energy and trade. As a regular columnist in The Times
business and Op-Ed pages, he commented on the recent surges in food and energy prices,
dealing with a wide range of subjects ranging from OPEC to GM foods and biofuels.
He has also written for The Wall Street Journal and was a columnist for Canada’s Globe
and Mail.
