WELCOME FROM

WELCOME FROM
THE TCF DIRECTOR
I am delighted to welcome you to
2015 Tasmanian Craft Fair. The
Tasmanian Craft Fair (TCF) is
a project of the Rotary Club of
Deloraine and all funds raised help
with local, national and international
charitable work. From small
beginnings in the 1980s, the TCF
has developed a reputation both
nationally and internationally as one
of the most prestigious celebrations
of art, design and craftsmanship
in Australia. We are proud of our focus on excellence and our ability to attract
artists of the highest calibre.
The Tasmanian Craft Fair is home to
one of the largest and best displays of
arts and crafts in Australia.
Now in its 35th year, the Fair is a
fabulous opportunity for artisans
to display their works and give live
demonstrations of their craft.
Importantly, the event draws more than
25,000 people to Deloraine, including
Tasmanian, interstate and overseas
visitors.
Held over four days, the Fair provides a significant boost for local businesses.
It has become a staple on the local events calendar and is a major draw card for
the region.
I commend the Rotary Club of Deloraine for its dedication to hosting this
event, which requires the coordination of around 230 artists and craftspeople,
as well as 1000 volunteers.
It gives me great pleasure to support the Tasmanian Craft Fair with $10,000 for
the Premier’s Award for Excellence.
Our Guest Artist for this year is internationally acclaimed Sydney-based
artist, Emily Valentine Bullock, who fashions whimsical artwork and stunning
jewellery from feathers.
Glass artist, Pamela Skurulis, is this year’s Emerging Artist. Pamela’s work
explores the fine line between progress and the natural landscape, interpreting
this relationship into striking glass creations.
Last year’s Heritage Artist, Christina Henri, returns to the Craft Fair in 2015 to
continue her work with primary school students of the Meander Valley region,
creating tributes to the convict women who shaped Tasmania.
The Wooden Boat Centre, Tasmania has joined us as our 2015 Feature Artist.
The Wooden Boat Centre is a community-owned organisation that keeps the art
of wooden boat building, using traditional methods, alive and well.
This year also marks the 20th Anniversary of Lark Distillery being part of the
Craft Fair. To celebrate this milestone, Lark Distillery has created a special
limited release whisky exclusive to the Craft Fair.
The annual TCF Awards will be presented during the Fair, including the $10,000
Premier’s Award for Excellence. Look out for the announcement of the winners
on our Facebook and website.
Fair-goers have the chance to go into the draw to win a special Craft Fair prize
pack – it’s filled with amazing goodies so be sure to complete an entry form,
which you can pick up from the gates, and place it in one of the boxes around the
venues. The prize will be drawn on Monday afternoon.
This year we’re excited to announce that you can now book your Tasmanian
Craft Fair entry tickets online. This new system will allow Fair-goers to purchase
tickets in advance and save you time getting through the gates as our amazing
volunteers will be there to quickly scan you through. You can also still buy tickets
on the day at the entry point gates.

Foot Pain? Back Pain? Flexing Foot Correctors
Made in USA since 1974
Prescribed by doctors and therapists around the world for 41
years. We flex the muscles to correct the foot (instead of just
a hard support for the bones). These unique orthotics have
a long list of benefits over custom-made orthotics. They can
help with bunions, heel pain, sore knees & hips, back &
neck pain. Our website has plenty of
information. Visit us at the Tasmanian Craft
Fair where you can have a free appraisal and test walk.

Lark Distillery has been attending the
Tasmanian Craft Fair every year since 1995
and this year celebrates our 20th Fair. We
sold our first ever bottle of spirit at the Craft
Fair which was a huge success for us. This
success enabled us to become a commercial
viable business now employing over 20
staff. We have come to look on the Fair as an
annual event where we return to our friends
in the organisation and venues and just as
importantly, keep in touch with the many visitors and public that have supported
us over the years. We look forward to catching up with everyone again this year.
To celebrate this milestone, for this year’s Deloraine Limited Release Whisky we
used a hand-picked 20L Port Cask from Seppeltsfield, South Australia. With only
120, 200ml bottles available for sale only at the Tasmanian Craft Fair this beautiful
limited release whisky definitely won’t last long.

Christina Henri brings to life the stories of our convict past through the
creation and collection of convict bonnets.
Christina’s Roses from the Heart installation examines the exploitation of
mainly white ‘slaves’ - convict women - and considers the contemporary
exploitation of humans, especially female workers, via sweatshops in the
manufacturing industry. Christina takes you back in time and introduces
you to the women who shaped Australia.
Christina has been working on her Bonnet Project for almost a decade. The
project’s aim is to collect 25,566 bonnets, with each bonnet representing
a woman transported to Australia as convict. Christina is very close to
reaching this target.
Christina encourages Craft Fair attendees of all ages to contribute to the
collection by purchasing products and materials from the fair to create
bonnets. Bonnets given to Christina will be added to the collection.
Christina deliberately chooses to invite personal tributes to be made rather
than mass orders so that each bonnet is a testament to the individuality of
the woman for whom it is created.
Christina returns to the Craft Fair this year to showcase the work done over
the last 12 months and to continue her work with school children of the
Meander Valley region.
Located on the picturesque Huon River, The
Wooden Boat Centre, Tasmania is the only boat
building and training facility in the world that
specialises in the use of Tasmanian timbers.
Providing training services to individuals from
around the world, the Wooden Boat Centre
specialises in traditional boat-building methods,
creating quality hand-build boats to withstand
the rigours of even the wildest seas.
Since its inception in 1992 the Wooden Boat
Centre, Tasmania has had nearly 500 students
from throughout Tasmania, Australia and Overseas who have produced
more than 60 wooden dinghies, repaired clinker and carvel boats and been
involved in recreational classes in the ways of boat building. Of the 500,
nearly 80 of these were enrolled in full-time Diploma or Certificate courses
who have also been responsible for producing nine sea-going cruising boats
which are responsible for the Centre’s world wide reputation.
The Wooden Boat Centre, Tasmania will be showcasing and demonstrating
traditional boat building materials and techniques.
To learn more about the Wooden Boat Centre, Tasmania, including the
courses on offer, please go to australianwoodenboatschool.com.au.
For Emily Valentine Bullock, feathers are her paint. Over the last fifteen years
Emily has developed her own technique and style using feathers. The source of
the feathers is vital to her work.
In 1999 she made Road Kill, a pair of shoes using feathers from a road kill
lorikeet and this lead to her continuing use of this source whenever she can.
Attitudes to wearing and owning dead animals and birds parts have changed.
Is this just because of fashion, or has society become more caring of animals?
Emily doesn’t think so. Emily wishes to stimulate the viewer, and ask them
to question our callous treatment of animals and birds, and ask how we subconsciously classify animals – pet or pest, valued or worthless, beautiful or plain
and why.
Emily’s work shows sympathy with the bird’s previous life and creates a new
life form. Emily sources her materials in several ways, including trapping birds
herself (the registered pest, the Indian mynah bird) and using deceased pets; the
death of her two budgies inspired her to make her award-winning, Budgerigar
Brassiere.
Her work has found inspiration in many forms, from The Dog Flu series, winged
birdie dogs and now cats, to creating feathered aeroplanes.
Emily’s work is well-received by audiences world-wide, as the work is direct,
humorous and meticulous.
This is Emily’s first time at the Tasmanian Craft Fair.
Emily other work can be viewed on her website emilyvalentine.com.au.
Pamela Skurulis is originally from the
Pilbara, Western Australia. It is arid
country; dry, red and full of Spinifex. As
a child she spent many hours exploring
the bush with her parents and learnt to
have a deep respect for this country and
was excited about finding different rocks,
learning the names of the vegetation,
and camping out for weeks on end in the
middle of nowhere.
Pamela began as a painter and has drawn
on this discipline in her glass work, using
a unique technique to ‘paint’ with glass.
Her kiln-formed glass creations come to
life when light shines through, creating
movement and joy.
Pamela’s glass art brings together her
knowledge of the Outback and other areas
of Australia, including her new home,
Tasmania. Pamela captures her love for
Australia in every piece of glass that is fired,
inspired by the colours of the vegetation,
the movement of the fauna and the contour
of the landscape.

The 2015 Craft Fair Sheep Dog Trial will also be the 2015
TWSDA Tasmanian Championship. The State is also hosting
the Australian Supreme Sheep Dog Championship at
Campbell Town in October 12th-18th.
Most of the visiting competitors from the mainland are staying
on to compete at the State Title and to experience the Craft
Fair and is a real bonus for the long suffering partners of many
sheep dog triallists.
There is expected to be about 50 competitors and 180 to 200
dogs. Competitors are coming from as far away as Western
Australia and Winton in Queensland.
The trial will be running on all four days of the Craft Fair,
which is one more day than usual. This is the 25th year for the
Craft Fair Dog Trial.

to the TCF.
MERELYN PEARCE has been quilting for over 20 years,
developing a unique and recognisable style through her use of
colours, and detailed applique and quilting. Her works glow due
to bright colours on black backgrounds. They are intensely freemotion quilted using her BERNINA 820.
“I love the freedom that my BERNINA gives me to enhance my
hand applique with many and varied quilting designs.”
Merelyn made a creative transition from pottery to fabric. She soon discovered her
passion lay in hand applique, and in 2000 began a series of quilts celebrating the work
of Australian artist Margaret Preston. This collection took a decade of creativity, each
quilt taking years to complete. The process of quilting these six masterpieces was greatly
enhanced by use of her Bernina machines. The sensitivity of tension adjustment on the
machines made it easy for her to experiment with different threads and gain satisfying
results.
DEBORAH LOUIE has been quilting for 25 years. Deborah has
always had a love of fabrics and studied textile design and colour
after leaving school. Since 2000, Deborah has been teaching
quilting and is a Quilters Guild of NSW Accredited Special
Techniques Machine Quilting Teacher.
Deborah has won numerous awards for her work, including
through the Quilters Guild of NSW, where she has twice been awarded in the Excellence in
Domestic Machine Quilting category.
Her favourite technique is feathered trapunto; which gives such a classic timeless elegance
to a quilt that Deborah absolutely
adores. Deborah makes traditional and
contemporary quilts for herself when she
has the time.
Deborah believes all quilts are beautiful
because they come from the heart and feels
