Looking back at 2015, I am pleased to say that it was a very good year for our Membership primarily due to the significantly stronger economy, the continuation of historically low interest rates, the increase in employment opportunities and greater overall consumer confidence in the economy. This was such a refreshing change from the prior few years when we were busy assisting several of our Members with their financial challenges in the wake of the Great Recession. I am amazed how quickly so many of our Members were able to recover from their recession-period setbacks and restructure their personal financial portfolios, positioning themselves to prosper in the future. I call this restructuring process getting ”financially fit.” What motivates you to be financially fit? The concept may sound strange, but financial fitness is the idea of being educated on your personal finances, your money management habits and the financial options available to you. Just as if you were a dedicated exerciser, you could be ignoring whole muscle groups, leaving yourself susceptible to injury. That is why I am so passionate about Southland providing you the tools to be financially fit so you can avoid potential financial injury. This past year, we introduced several new resources and improvements to help increase your financial acumen, including hiring additional associates, improvements to our home banking and our free financial workshops. We also kept our loan rates at historic lows, while adding promotions such as our 0% APR VISA credit card. The introduction of these helped keep your wallets pumped up with added savings and your financial knowledge in peak condition. I encourage you to commit to making 2016 be your year to become financially fit. Author Will Robinson said “financial fitness is not a pipe dream or a state of mind – it’s a reality if you are willing to pursue it and embrace it.” As you chart your path forward in 2016, let our trained financial experts at Southland not only help you, but also coach and motivate you in your pursuit. We are experienced in helping many of our Members with their financial fitness regimens and taking control of their financial futures. No matter how large or how small your budget may be, I am confident we can help you making your 2016 your strongest year ever. Best wishes for a prosperous and healthy New Year! Ferris R. Foster President and Chief Executive Officer Thank you Southland Members! Event Director Emeline Noda kept this idea as her and her team planned for the 35th anniversary of the Los Alamitos Race on the Base, presented by Southland Credit Union. With the addition of more events and more entertainment, she is on her way to making this year’s event very special. Over the past 35 years, the Race On The Base has grown to become the largest sprint reverse triathlon in the United States. The reverse triathlon is different as participants first run, then bike, and finish with a swim – a traditional triathlon reverses this order. The course is also shorter, with racers finishing in the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base swimming pool. Combined with the running and biking on the airfield of the base, the race is great for first time triathlon participants or those who want a warmup before taking on a longer course. While the reverse triathlon attracts thousands of participants, the largest event is the 5k, with many others attending the 10k and hand cycle race. Each participant receives a finishers medal and an event tech t-shirt. For racers who participate in the annual Run Seal Beach, Cypress 5k/10k and the Race On The Base, they will receive a special Orange County Race Series medal. Southland Times | Jan-Mar 2016 3 2925 New for this year are extended festivities on the Friday evening before the race. Children 14 years old and younger can participate in the Glow in the Dark 1K Kids Run and children of all ages can have fun at the Southland Credit Union Kids Zone, taking place in the Health & Fitness Expo. There will also be a performance from the 80’s cover band, Knyght Ryder, that is sure to bring everyone to their feet. Southland Credit Union is proud to return as the title sponsor of the 2016 Southland Credit Union Los Alamitos Race On The Base. For more information, or to participate, visit RaceOnTheBase.com. El Niño is a weather phenomenon related to unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean, triggering greater than usual rainfall as well as storm clusters that can saturate the ground and produce flash flooding. After tracking weather conditions for the past year, meteorologists are forecasting that this winter may produce one of the strongest El Niños on record in Southern California. • Dangers from El Niño conditions are real: In 1982-83, El Niño storms killed 36 people and caused $1.2 billion in damages when coastal Orange County areas flooded and mudslides destroyed canyon homes. In December 1997, the most severe storm ever measured in Orange County hit, devastating parts of Laguna Beach, Lake Forest and Irvine, and around the I-5 Freeway. More than seven inches of rain fell in parts of south Orange County in one day. • How to Prepare Your Home for El Niño • • • • • • • • • Have roofs repaired and leaks fixed by licensed and bonded contractors. Clear gutters, downspouts and roof drains of leaves and other debris. Place sandbags to protect vulnerable areas against flooding around your home. Trim all landscaping and branches away from homes, vehicles and power lines. Have weakened trees inspected by arborists. Prepare a disaster supply kit that is portable in case of evacuation. Have a family emergency plan and reunification plan. Keep critical documents, keepsakes and medicine in one place for easy access. Keep sneakers, a blanket and water in your car in case of emergencies. Southland Times | Jan-Mar 2016 5 2925 Photograph valuables at your home and property for future insurance claims if needed. What To Do If You Get Caught In Flood Conditions • • • • • If on foot, do not attempt to walk through floodwaters. Go directly to higher ground. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off your feet. Keep children and pets away from floodwaters, storm drains and sewers. Never drive into a flooded area. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of water. If your car stalls and water is rapidly rising around you, immediately get out and move to higher ground. Stay informed of weather predictions and road closures. Tune in to local radio and TV stations, and check these resources: www.weather.gov and www.ocstormcenter. com Q: Will my homeowner’s insurance policy cover flooding? A: Standard homeowner’s insurance does not cover flooding. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is available for property owners to financially protect themselves. Most private flood policies have a 30-day waiting period. 800.426.1917 Despite all of the advertising out there, here are three things you probably didn’t know about car insurance: 1. It’s available at Southland Credit Union through the TruStage Auto & Home Insurance Program, complete with discounts for Members. 2. AHE, AHL-936966.1 Southland Times | Jan-Mar 2016 6 2925 New Southland Website Responsive Design That Is Now Mobile & Tablet Friendly Southland Times | Jan-Mar 2016 7 2925 “ “ Our goal was to tell a story with each service 800.426.1917 It’s no surprise that the internet has changed how we communicate, find information and connect with the people and companies that affect our daily lives. Companies that hesitate to respond to these changes, and the demands of their customers, are soon left looking antiquated and irrelevant. Southland’s Marketing Department sought to move ahead with the evolving trends of websites and initiated the ambitious project of refreshing the Credit Union’s presence on the web. “We responded to feedback from our Members who found it difficult to find the information they needed,” says Matt Herrick, Southland Go Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Our new website has a familiar look, but as you go through the product pages you’ll notice that everything is a vast improvement on how we present solutions for our Members.” President & COO. “Where in the past you selected auto loans you received just that information, now you can continue to read about the related services that can also be a benefit. Many of our Members, for example, don’t know that we offer mechanical breakdown insurance on vehicles, often for cheaper than you receive at a car dealership. Now that information is easily accessible.” Rendering correctly for mobile was also a priority for the Southland team. With over half of the visits to Southland’s website coming from mobile users, having a site that sized correctly for smartphones and tablets was critical. Search For Locations right from your phone Visit the Southland Credit Union website at www.SouthlandCU.org.
