DALSTON SUPERSTORE
put queer East on the map
five years ago. With an
incredible array of club nights,
combining explosive DJs with
the most mentalist drag queens and trannies, you don’t get more bang for
your buck than a weekend at the ‘Superstore. Owners Mikki Most and Dan
Beaumont plied Cliff Joannou with plenty of prosecco and told him just how
they pull it all together every week…

amazing residents – it wouldn’t be the same
without Hannah Holland, Borja Peña, the Little

Jos Gibson and the Duchess of Pork et al.
MIKKI: Absolutely, we recently had the guys
over from Members Club in Berlin for B(e)ast
and the music was really amazing and fresh for
London. It’s great to have the freedom to bring
over international talent and introduce it to our
scene over here.
And it’s the place to put a wig
on it…
MIKKI: It’s part of what we are
and to be honest all the best
nights I can remember at
‘Superstore have involved
wigs and heels flying
around all over the place.
So many of our regulars
turn up in flats and leave
in heels, it’s what gives the
place its sparkle.
DAN: [Laughs] Yes, our bar
very often gets mistaken for a
stage by our bewigged regulars
doesn’t it? We wouldn’t be the venue
we are without the support of people
like Jonny Woo, A Man To Pet, John
Sizzle, Jacqui Potato and Glynn Famous.
In fact we are still in awe of their
talents… not to mention their
ability to stage dive in heels on a
Friday night without sustaining
any injuries.

What
BEAUTY?
Albino supermodel Shaun Ross was taunted by bullies as a child,
but is now one of the most sought after faces in fashion. Following
on from his ‘Radical Beauty’ talk at the TEDXHackney event,
Patrick Cash went to meet him at the Dalston Superstore to
talk more about modern ideas of beauty.
some sort of validation from
another person because you
can’t find it within yourself,
which is why a lot of men,
especially gay men, are very,
very insecure, they don’t
even really notice it.
Just looking for fleeting affirmation?
Of course. Even getting a lover, it’s: ‘I want to be
with him because we look good’, more so than
‘we feel good’, and that could be the reason why
a lot of gay relationships don’t really last.
So, what to you is beautiful?
Certain things are not meant to be jammed
in a jar and certain things are not meant to be
categorised, so that’s beautiful and beauty to
me. Beauty as a feeling, like an air you can’t
really feel, you can’t explain, you just know how
it feels and you’re like that’s beautiful.
And what to you is physically
beautiful?
Physical beauty doesn’t exist to me.
But there must be some guy in a club
who you walk in and think ‘wow!’
Well, I have a boyfriend.
That doesn’t stop you looking.
I look at people and I think they’re hot but I’m
a very logical person, that’s my problem. I’ll
look at a boy and think ‘Oh my god, he’s so
cute’, but I know x, y and z, why this would
never happen, why it would never work, so

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m obviously a fashion model, of course, but
I’m just a very creative individual that likes to
do all kinds of different things.
Talking about radical beauty itself,
in my research it said you suffered
at the hands of bullies as a child,
how does it feel to have been both
taunted for the way you look and to
have been more recently celebrated?
I mean the taunted came more so from when
I was younger. When you’re younger you
definitely go through things. You know kids
are cruel and kids say mean things. But the
taunting and everything, it definitely made me
stronger to do the things I’m doing today.
Does it keep you grounded?
It definitely keeps me grounded, especially
when I look at other people and I see what
they go through, it keeps me grounded,
because it’s like ‘I’ve been there before, that’s
very familiar.’
Do you think the contemporary gay
scene is too obsessed with aesthetic,
the way people look?
Without a doubt. Predominately in gay culture
you have Grindr and you have Instagram
where you post pictures of yourself on social
media of your body and things like this, and
it’s like ‘why are you doing that?’ The only
reason you’re doing that is because you want
they automatically look
ugly to me.
And who are the most
radically beautiful
people you yourself
have encountered in
your life?
Grace Jones. Because
Grace Jones is so
different, even as a
person, what is she like
fifty or sixty? She’s still
walking around in a
leotard and high stilettos
and a mink. I mean come
on, it doesn’t matter, and
she doesn’t have the body
of a supermodel and she
embraces it and I love that. And she’s probably
one of the most radically beautiful people I’ve
ever met.
Do you think there’s a hypocritical aspect
to modern society’s treatment of beauty?
I think that it’s very hypocritical because while
you’re saying that you want to be innovative and
different, you’re showing the same shit.
What do you think would push people
forward to doing something different?
People like me. People like myself and you. Like
having a gay magazine about gay men doing
successful things as if you were reading another
magazine. It’s making what we feel unnormal the
norm, because it is normal.
Excellent. And finally, this is a kind of
devil’s advocate question, but what to
you is ugly?
When I see people who don’t live their lives
the way they want to, that’s ugly to me. When I
see somebody living a false life, that’s very ugly,
extremely ugly.
So truth is beauty?
Yes.

This has such a hooky
bassline, deep techy

I am a sucker for beats.
This is simple as fuck, but

3. ‘Hear Me Now’ Tong And Flynn
Deep dark and techy. Tom

I rate both of these

Very tribal Latin tech

WHEN IT COMES to the biggest four-day weekend in
anyone’s calendar, it’s no surprise that things can be a
bit up in the air, but there was certainly one staple that
was firmly fixed in our calendar; Neon Jungle’s latest
performance at Heaven. Obviously stumbling down
that cobbled alley was as tough as ever, but believe
us it was worth it. The crowd enjoyed some pumping
commercial sounds as they awaited pop’s latest girl
group, and when they emerged the entire club was no
short of dripping like Cheryl Cole when she heard “X
Factor comeback”. The quartet certainly lived up to
their name when they appeared in colourful outfits that
would send any epileptic into uncontrollable fits. But
we were actually LIVING for each one of their outfits!
*writes Christmas list*
The girls burst onto the stage causing a whole lot of
‘Trouble’ with their debut hit, before performing title
track ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ and their most recent
smash ‘Braveheart’. We were shacking out like Janet
Jackson doped up on speed; yes ‘cause ‘Braveheart’ is
our jam! The group looked - and sounded - amazing, so
we were fully content when we had to drag our drunk
arses along those cobbles again. Neon
Jungle, we salute ya!

20/04/14
Terminus Place, Victoria,

WITH MOUSTACHES a-plenty
and the words ‘come to
Papa’ dancing on our
lips, Sunday night saw
one of the biggest new
happenings on the
London club scene
for ages as Tel Aviv’s
Papa World Tour
landed for its London
debut. Super-hot Eliad
Cohen brought his cohort
of sexy sailors to super club
Pacha in Victoria wearing only
skimpy pants that left nothing to the imagination. The
main room rocked to the tunes of international Papa
DJ Suri as well as our very own Mike Dower and Zach
Burns, while upstairs Daz Saund, Tom
Stephan and Leonardo Glovibes
provided some grrr and furrr
in the Megawoof room, and
Gordon John and Paul Heron
the ‘gurl’ and hoopla in a
packed room of chunky
dirty sounds. The club was
packed with the hottest
men imaginable and it
was shirts off and tits
out from the off with most
staying right through ‘til closing
at 5am. If you missed it, you
definitely missed out, but hopefully it
won’t be too long ‘til Papa comes back

Easter bunnies who put their
baskets down and got busy
shakin’ their cotton tails.
“It’s all about laid-back
people socialising with each

after-hours, taking our

Handsome Saturday
night at the East End’s
favourite bunny hole.
The ‘Bloc’s Wayne
and promoter Martyn
Fitzgerald served us up a
right proper treat with none
other than legendary original
Chicago house DJ Marshall Jefferson
laying on sticky-chocolate funk house that had us bunny
hoppin’ ‘til the sweat trickled down the walls.
“The theme is US house,” said Martyn. “We want to
bring back that whole mixed crowd urban vibe that’s
been missing from the gay club scene.”
Bring it they did. A night reminiscent of the good
ol’ days back in my misspent Chi-town youth in the
basement jams of Frankie Knuckles where all ages and
races mixed it up on the dance floor. Highlights
included the crystalline airy electro-deep
trip mix of blond sugar Stuart Geddes,
high-energy house by Dave Kendrick
and Mark-Ashley Dupe’s slick urban
grooves that had them vogue-ing
in the back bar. Mistamaker spun
some impressive hip-hop and
Johnny Kalifornia had the third
room club swirling to his own “shed
party within a house party” featuring
his new downloadable mix ‘Sprung’.
A hot mix of club kids, oldschoolers, hard hunks and
funkmasters all gathered
together like multi-coloured
eggs in one helluva

hottest DJs and spiciest

incomparable Jacqui Potato
as Posh Spice.
From the basement to the top of the upstairs bar,
not a square inch of space was left untainted by the
massive crush of fanny-friendly crowds filling two
floors and out the door!
DJs Neil Prince and RUFUS and Bambi led the night
on the ground floor with familiar 90s dance-pop and
retro grooves re-styled for the funkier folk. As the night
grew heavier and more of the teeming throngs poured
in from the Hackney Empire, the music revealed
decidedly cooler flavours of fun from
Kotsakis, Holestar and none other than
her majesty the Duchess of Pork (oink
oink)! If only the real Spice Girls had
been this talented, we might still
give a monkey’s.
In the laser basement, darker,
harder funkhouse grooves thumped
out in time with the laser beams
shining off our greased-up glitter and
flashing on the glam in the dark. We
humped and grumped our way

DOWN IN THE DARK dungeon lab of East Bloc, mad
scientists Larry Tee and Attack Attack Attack hooked
the battery cables to their lil’ monster’s neck plugs,
cranked up the voltage and unleashed another Super
Electric Party Machine onto the lovable carny folk. Highenergy funk house ripped through the joint packed with
the sweaty, shirtless, the weird and wonderful all come
together in the panoply of style and fun that always
makes the East End worth the trip across town.
LT and AAA had ‘em lubed and ready for main stage
DJ Kris Di Angelis’ “heavy dance music”, serious mansize beats that shook the plaster from the ceiling: “It’s
incredible from the minute I step in! I love it here!” The
back room swirled with the familiar funk-pop, old school
grooves of James Long and Maddy Endrighi early on and
wrapped up tight with the harder twisted vogue-worthy
bass lines of Colby B. from NYC.
Special treat was an appearance by soon-to-be
Eurovision winner, Austria’s own Conchita Wurst (yes,
“sausage”, figure it out people). The bearded songstress
belted out two power pop hits: “That’s What I Am” and
contest entry ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’. A drag artist since
her teens, Ms. Wurst is first and foremost a pro singer
and songwriter. “I just want to do a good job onstage
and change some minds,” she told us. She certainly
blew some minds at East Bloc as the crowd tore down
the walls and stomped for more. Yessir, I think we have
a weiner - I mean, winner!
Purple-haired Viking Matthew Kerry, did a show that
was “fierce, fab and bitches gonna gag!” She wasn’t
foolin’! I wish I could print what MK did!
FiFi la True swanned about in her festooned wig and
svelte body giving bon mots to all and adding that
touch of Warhol-chic to this new romantic denizen.
“Being glamtrash isn’t about being cunty,
darling. Only the insecure bitches are nasty.
I know I’m beautiful, so I can afford to be
sweet,” she glared with pearly
whites. Yes, Glinda, only bad

their most memorable nights
at one of Soho’s most insanely
sociable venues…

Sam DMS at TWERQ, Tuesday
We all get our fair share of unwanted
attention but one particular guy kept
turning up on my night and getting overlyfriendly. I made the mistake of moaning to
Alan to which I was met with the response:
“Oh be quiet Sam, it’s a quiet night, take
one for the team!”
Dusty O Detained, Wednesday
On one particular day there was an event
on in Soho I was working at. One of the first
places I head to is Circa. On this occasion
Mr Winter’s generosity overcame me, and
combined with the lovely atmosphere I always
enjoy so much and - you guessed it - I got
drunk. In fact, I got bladdered. So much so
that I forgot I was working and spent the
whole night at Circa. It was only the next
day after waking up fully clothed on my
bathroom floor did I remember I was actually
meant to be somewhere else and had come
home without doing my duties. I never miss
a gig, especially my own and was horrified.
However, it’s a testament to how much I
adore the bar and its wonderful welcoming
atmosphere. Thanks Circa. I love you!
Munroe Bergdorf at VS, Thursday
That mirrorball booth has seen its fair
share of moments, but the time that I
managed to get both my dress and weave

epic. I’m not sure what I would have done

the track finished…

Fridays are always full of crazy, but that
time I was balancing explaining WHY I
wasn’t going to play Celine Dion’s ‘new

invisible to two ex-boyfriends in the crowd
and hide the new one inside the booth, was
particularly memorable.
That mirrorball

Adam Turner, Saturday
There was one night during our late licenses
last year that we had a DJ who had to get
to another gig before Circa closed, which
meant I had to do the last hour of Circa.
With a two hour gap of no DJing for me and
Alan forcing Jaegarbombs down my neck,
once I got back on the decks I have no idea
what I played, if I played or where I was.
Moral of the story: never agree to DJ the
last hour if Alan has anything to do with it!
Jonathan Bestley
at Love # Hangover, Sunday
We were obsessed with American Horror
Story this year. Little did I realise I’m
actually part of a coven. We cursed a
wicked man the other day and he woke
up in hospital the next morning with
concussion. Do not incur our wrath! (He
was fine btw LOL)
Lee Dalloway, Dungeon Master
Downstairs at Circa, affectionately
known as “The Dungeon”, is naturally
the venue’s epicentre of sin. While not
the delightfully rotten core of the bar
(that honour goes to our leader Alana
Wintour) many of the things a drunken
cloakroom slut gets up to on an average
shift are unprintable.
But the biggest sin is clearly vanity,
thanks to the floor-to-ceiling “selfie
mirror” next to the loos - where
the great, the good, the drag and the
bladdered pout into an iPhone then
Instagram the shit out of it. Security
cameras regularly catch Soho’s drunkest
sprucing and preening, but the best
moment had to be a staggering kween
who, somehow, mistook the giant mirror
for a continuation of “The Dungeon” and
smacked face first into his own visage.
We’ll leave it up to you to decide if the
problem was a lack of reflection...

gets underway good and proper
this week, with the first heats

The Golden Cross, Cardiff
on Wednesday 30th from
8pm. Halfway has my very own
drag wife, and drag mother to
many, Bette Rinse hosting; and
I’ve been reliably informed that
there’s a healthy mix of traditional
and alternative drag performers,
who will all be looking to secure
one of those golden spots in the
Heat Final.
Speaking to me this week, Bette
spoke of her ‘excitement to be
carrying the mantle as host for the
third year in a row’.

“After Halfway’s win with Martha
last year, we’re determined to do
the double and hold onto that
title, so it’s all systems go, dear,
and (manager) Angel is always
behind the acts 100% too, which
is great.”
I’ll be joined on the judging panel
by 2011 winner Son Ofa Tutu
and the wee Glaswegian lassie
with the big voice, Mary Mac.
Guest judge for the first heat will
be resident DJ David Robson,
and there’ll also be performances
from previous winners, Martha
D’Arthur and Tanya Hyde.
If you’re an aspiring performer
who is toying with the idea of
entering, every venue is still
accepting applications, however
the following may be your best

to fill their heats: The

THE SOHO EASTER
BARS ROUND-UP
WORDS AND PHOTOS
BY CHRIS JEPSON
WITH ALL the
shiny adverts, bells
and whistles that
accompany the arrival
to our shores of various
visiting continental
mega clubs, it is very
easy to become
complacent and forget
just how lucky we are
to have the breadth and
diversity of permanent
gay venues right here in
the city that are open
day-in and day-out,
come rain or shine.
Whether you are after
a quiet respite for a
romantic rendezvous or
something a little more
lively to kick-off a night
on the tiles, London has
it all. This Easter saw
the festivities spread
themselves out over
the five nights from
Thursday to Monday,
and never being ones
to miss an opportunity
we donned our best
walking mules and did
the rounds.
We started on the
north side of Soho
Square at the multicoloured edifice that
is the Edge. Shining
out like a beacon in
the midst of Crossrail
chaos, a plethora of top
DJs invited us to get
down and dirty with
their Easter Bunny,
while sexy bar boys
and hostess Felicia Van
Cartier ensured there
was no let up in the
frolics right through ‘til
3am every night.
A hop and a skip
down Frith Street,
we found Chez Alan

pumping out the party
tunes to a packed bar
of pretty boys. Sunday
also saw the launch
of Jonathan Bestley’s
Love#Hangover with
delightful disco jams,
soulful sounds and
re-imagined poptastic
ditties. After a couple
of Circa’s dirtiest
martinis we fell out of
the door and made
our way carefully
through the
back streets
of Soho to
The Yard
where we
were greeted
by a warren
of the hottest
bunny boys
imaginable. With
all three spaces packed
to the rafters we chose
to mingle in the starlit courtyard while
beautiful ripped shot
boys bearing trays laden
with Easter delights
pressed their way
through the crowds.
Our next stop was
just a few metres away
at Rupert Street
where we found the
lovely Little John on
the decks mixing
commercial tunes to
another packed bar,
continuing their line-up
of guest DJs that also
had the gorgeous Jodie
Harsh doing her thang
as well as residents
Rich B and Brent
Nicholls.
Dragging ourselves
away we headed to
Ku Bar on Lisle
Street where it was

all three floors with
live DJs, topless pert

pecs serving pints and
pretty boys galore as
only Ku knows how.
Next stop, Manbar
where, although they
have had to turn the
music down due to the
complaints from a single
vindictive neighbour,
the fun continues with
a superabundance of
superb drinks offers for
the summer and plenty
of space downstairs as
well as up in the new
Moustache Lounge
where the men gather!
Halfway II Heaven
had a bumper offering
of cabaret this
weekend with Rose
Garden’s Saturday
Market knocking the
ball well and truly
out of the park, and
DJ Sean delivering
camp classics on the
decks, complete with
his impromptu dance
routines, our evening
was almost complete!
With legs almost unable
to walk in a straight
line, we finished our
Soho trawl by jumping
in to a Polish driven
rickshaw and careering
up the Charing Cross
Road to G-A-Y Late
where, having opened
at 11pm it was almost at
capacity thirty minutes
later, and the queue
stretched almost 100m
down the road. Inside,
the party was in full
swing with the anthems
and pop perfection
for buff young bucks,
and with drinks as
cheap as Easter chicks
it was the ideal homo
establishment to kick
back and spend the rest
of the night.

DR ALEX, GP
Hi Dr Alex,
I’m getting confused about what I should and should not
be eating. I try to be health conscious but not faddy. I have
tended to avoid butter, too many eggs, bacon (especially
the fatty rind), chicken skin and cream cheese but now
I heard that these things aren’t so bad for you after all!
What is the right answer as I’d like to have a guilt-free
bacon butty… Every once in a while anyway!
Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris,
You are right to be a little confused. Us doctors and the
government have been saying for a long time that saturated fats
(found in animal and full-fat dairy products) are major contributors
to the development of heart disease. National guidelines on diet
encourage that our fat intake, to be mostly monounsaturated
(fats in avocado, nuts, and vegetable oils, such as canola, olive,
and peanut oils that we know lower your “bad” cholesterol and
keep “good” cholesterol levels high), with only small amounts of
saturated fat (found in animal foods, such as milk, cheese, and meat
cream and butter).
But things seem to be changing. In fact research that pooled
data from lots of individual research studies, 72 in fact, shows that
saturated fats are probably not as responsible for heart disease as
once thought. So you can likely have your occasional bacon butty,
dripping with butter, without worrying that your arteries were
furring up with every bite.
What poses the greatest risk of heart disease (because it raises
cholesterol) are trans-fats, a fat that has been changed by a
process called hydrogenation. It’s found mostly in processed oilbased products as it increases the shelf life of fat and makes the fat
harder at room temperature. Figuring out if a food contains transfat can be tricky. You can check the information label, find
the total fat content then subtract the saturated
fat, the mono and polyunsaturated fats. This leaves
the trans-fat. If the food label doesn’t give the exact
quantities then the list of the ingredients is in order
of quantity, from most to least. If hydrogenated
or partially hydrogenated oils are listed
early on the list you know the product
contains lots of trans-fats. If you find
this all a bit too much then simply
cut back on processed or fast foods,
shop bought cakes and biscuits, some
margarines and salad dressings.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that you can
pile on the butter as eating too much fat (that’s
more than 30g a day for a guy) it problematic as
it contains so many calories. Low fat diets are
no good too as studies show that people then
tend to eat more sugar and carbs that can lead
to becoming overweight. So, in summary it’s
just about eating the right amount and right
types of fat.
