FROZEN: Southwoods Style!
We are thrilled to report that our campers and staff had an incredible time on the 2014
Southwoods Winter Weekend! The chill in the air didn’t stop any of our fun!
We met the coach bus on Friday afternoon and everyone quickly began catching up on school life, reminisced on
last summer at camp, and were excited to talk about this upcoming summer and all the new things at camp! Before
arriving at the Great Escape Lodge in Lake George we made a pit-stop at Friendly’s Ice Cream Shop for a frozen
treat! We were delighted with sprinkles, whipped cream, toppings, and ice cream galore! Once at the Lodge, we
found our rooms and chilled with camp friends for the rest of the night.
The next morning we enjoyed a delicious breakfast then headed to the Water Park! We slid down all the crazy water
slides, relaxed in the Lazy River, showed-off at the Surf Station, and enjoyed time with our friends (old and new)! After a
few hours in the park, we regrouped and headed north to visit CAMP! Before arriving at
IN THIS EDITION Southwoods we stopped at DeCesare’s Pizza for our private pizza party!
With our bellies full of pizza, we were finally ready for the next stop: Southwoods Camp! We

UPDATES
What’s new with you?
Adam Kaufman has been busy ski racing every
weekend across the New England area, and
when not racing, he’s still hitting the slopes with
friends! He also recently visited England and
Scotland for spring break where he met up with
MANY camp friends, including LiV Marchbank
in front of Buckingham Palace! (Photo: Above)
Returning staff member Kirsten Paddock
recently gave a presentation about Southwoods
for a Recreation class. It was supposed to be 5
minutes long, however she ended up talking for
15 minutes! Her professor didn’t stop her,
because she saw how much passion Kirsten
showed for camp! Needless to say, Kirsten is
excited to return to camp this summer!
Former camper and current staff member
Aurora Schmale completed an elementary
school internship for 6 weeks where she helped
teach art, violin, library, and physical
education! She also started “Tolkien Lunches”
where students came together over lunch to
talk about The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings!
Tess Shacknow is busy finishing the season with
her diving team, and this allows her more time
for gymnastics! This spring she’s also traveling to
D.C. where she’ll meet up with former staff
member, Brandon Sabin and then traveling to
Florida where she’ll
visit another former

A Note From Andrea & Scott
Hello Southwoods,
We hope you are as excited about the upcoming summer as we are! Can you believe only 113 days until the first session
begins? It will be here before we know it! To get ready for summer, the entire Southwoods full-time leadership team is
gearing up for the annual American Camp Association NY&NJ's Tri-State Camp Conference in Atlantic City. The TriState conference is the largest gathering of summer youth development professionals in the world. It provides more than
3,500 owners, educators, administrators and staff the opportunity to attend sessions on topics ranging from how to teach
archery, expectations in adolescent behavior, operating a healthy food service, demonstrations of the hottest new arts &
crafts projects, to the latest on 21st century skills young people need to be successful. I can tell you as President of the
American Camp Association NY&NJ, I am very proud our Tri-State Conference is the largest and best attended youth
development conference in the world of camping!
One of the key things this conference always highlights for Andrea and I, is how lucky we are to have so many quality
people working with us at Southwoods. Each year at the end of the conference our entire leadership team returns to our
home for the annual planning meeting. We always begin by debriefing the sessions we attended. This meeting leaves us
with a great sense of pride in how we do things at Southwoods. Year after year, our team shares the various ways they see
how we already use many of the strategies most camps are hearing for the first time. What is truly amazing is how
through this opportunity to share and listen, our leadership team is also able to take pride in the great job they do while
becoming even more energized to innovate and create better opportunities for Southwoods campers to be successful.
We come away being reassured that the members of the Southwoods Leadership Team are some of the finest in the camp
industry and with a renewed passion for what we do at Camp. We could not be more proud of our entire staff team!
To that end, we wanted to take a moment and remember Darren Bull. Darren had been a member of our staff for the last
few years. He was a giant of a man and not because he was almost 7ft tall. Darren was a giant because of his compassion,
passion, energy and love of people. He gave 100% of himself to everything he did. I can still see him kneeling down in
the dining room cleaning up spilled cereal and helping the LJB who had just spilled it not feel embarassed about having
had the accident. Darren died as he had lived, trying to help someone
in need. His laugh & smile, bright colored
clothes, and his true warmth will be missed
by all of us at Southwoods, and I am sure by
all others that knew him.
Love,
Andrea & Scott

Darren Bull for his infectious

My name is Sammy
Friedman, and 2014
will be my fifth year
at Southwoods. This
year I will be a
Lower Senior!
I have had many extremely awesome
experiences at Southwoods. One of
them is every single Day of Awesome.
The Day of Awesome is a day that has
inflatables everywhere around the
camp, and is a day where there is nonstop fun. Another of my favorite
awesome experiences is Free Play. Free
Play is a period where you can go
wherever you want in camp. There may
be a day where I want to do something
off of my schedule, and when I go to
Free Play it makes my day.
This year at Southwoods I am looking
forward to a number of things. This will
be my last year as a camper where I
am not a chieftain, and I am looking
forward to learning from the chieftains
this year on how to make my team the
best. I also really enjoy participating in
closing circle, talking about what I look
forward to the next year.
Southwoods is not a camp, it is my
second home, and I cannot wait to
come back for my fifth year!!!
Brendan Chang and his family
visited Project Morry to donate
calculators for Junior and Senior
students to use for SAT and ACT
prep! This was in celebration of his
recent Bar Mitzvah! He’s also
committed to spending more time
at the P.M. office to help with
special projects! Mazel Tov for your
valued contribution, Brendan!

Every so often Andrea & I receive notes and letters from camp parents, former campers, and long-time staff members
who each share news and life updates since their time at Southwoods. We love hearing how these alumni continue to
endure success, and we truly appreciate how they credit so many valuable life lessons to the things they learned while
at Southwoods!
This summer’s Super Senior Director, Cole Everett, recently had the opportuity to share what Southwoods meant to
him, and we are excited to share with you his article titled “Because of Camp”...

Can you believe how long winter lasts? Summer, hurry up already!
The countdown for summer is officially on! Before we know it, trees
will be budding leaves, birds will be singing, and camp will be here!
As I start to remember where I put my shorts and t-shirts, I can’t
help but think of all the amazing things camp has to offer! So, I’ve
compiled a list of important things I believe can only be found at
Southwoods.
1. The Best Activities! On any given day, Southwoods has over 68 fun activities going on!
Where else can you wake surf, fence, learn to skateboard, take aim at archery, go frog
catching, play a doubles match at tennis, work on your hook shot, videograph a music
video, and perform on stage all in the same day? Every year I get very excited for each new
activity at camp, as there is always something innovative and fun to do. Just remember,
you get to do these things amazing activities with your best camp friends! It doesn’t get
any better than that!
2. The Friends! There is no kind of friend like a Southwoods friend! It amazes me every
summer how friendships continue on right where they left off, as if 11 months hadn’t just
passed! It’s also exciting to see a new camper immerse him/her self in new friendships. Our
camp friends help us learn the meaning of compromise, honesty, character, trust, kindness,
and patience, and everything else that involves being a good friend! The people we meet at
Southwoods stay with us not only during our time at camp career, but throughout our
whole life.
3. The Memories! At the end of each phenomenal summer, we’re all saddened by the
thought of leaving such a magical place, and not returning for another 11 months.
However, I want to remind you of something that will carry you through these long winter
months... memories of camp! Allow yourself to find comfort in pictures, stories with your
siblings & parents, singing camp songs, re-enacting campfire skits, and messaging camp
friends you haven’t heard from in a while!
I am so excited to see you all in a few short months! We’ll reminisce about prior years and
of course make new unforgettable memories! Have you thought about the things you’re
looking forward to this summer? Until next time, KEEP DREAMING BIG!!!

After each Southwoods event, I feel more and more anticipation for
the beginning of another camp summer. It’s an extraordinary feeling
to be surrounded by fun people (staff and campers) who share the
same love and joy for camp! This led me to thinking about what it’s
like to actually step foot on camp soil after being away for 11 months
(or for our new campers, experiencing Southwoods for the very first time). Let me share
with you a few things I’ve noticed over the past few years about what it’s like at Southwoods
on opening day…
Seeing camp friends reunite after being away for a long winter is incredibly powerful! It’s
amazing to watch so many campers descend from the coach bus with a gleaming smile on
their face, give a major high-five to Andrea & Scott, sprint toward their BFF, and hug him/
her in an epic embrace only to continue smiling, talking, and laughing for the next several
hours (and weeks). Staff are looking to determine how each camper FEELS when they get to
camp. Both old and new campers cannot hide the emotions they’re feeling during those first
few hours. We see campers ecstatic, timidly nervous, terrified, relieved, and playing it cool!
Of course, our counselors are ever-present to help kids navigate their feelings and actions in
this new social setting.
What also amazes me is how quickly Southwoods becomes “home” for our new campers!
Returning campers are eager to share experiences, stories, and information with these firsttimers, in hopes of being the first to make a new friend, or simply because they want
everyone else to love and understand camp as much as they do! Within minutes, they are
pointing out shortcuts from the Grove to Gymnastics, sharing how Canteen works, and
talking about how to nominate a friend for a Fuzzy!
The day ends perfectly as we join together with every single camper and staff member
present at our first all-camp Campfire of the summer! What a whirlwind of a day! Nothing
compares to the excitement of Day 1 at Southwoods! Reminiscing on what it feels like to be
back at camp makes me so happy! I can’t help but think of our famous Line-Up song lyric,
“Reunited, and it feels so good!”, because being reunited truly DOES feel so good!
