Untitled - Ravenna
4 Battistero degli Ortodossi (or Neoniano)
It is one of the most ancient monuments in Ravenna, probably dating back to the early
5th century. Its decoration goes back to the time of Bishop Neon (mid-5th century).
The brick building is octagonal in shape; the interior is decorated with marbles,
stuccos and mosaics of Hellenic-Roman influence. The ceiling mosaic depicts the
Baptism of Christ surrounded by the 12 apostles.
5 Cappella di S. Andrea (or Cappella Arcivescovile)
Built as a private chapel by Bishop Peter II during Theoderic’s rule, it is the only
extant intact archiepiscopal chapel of the Early Christian era. The cross-shaped
chapel is preceded by a small vestibule, both covered with marble and mosaics
showing an anti-Arian glorification of Christ. The decoration of the vault of the
vestibule shows 99 species of birds – some of which typical of Ravenna’s natural
areas – on a golden sky.
6 Basilica di S. Apollinare Nuovo
Erected in the 6th century by Theoderic close to his palace, the Basilica was originally
a Palatine Church of Arian religion. The original mosaics of the interior document the
evolution of Byzantine wall mosaics from the era of Theoderic to that of Justinian. The 26
Christological scenes from the period of Theoderic are one of the biggest monumental
cycles and the most ancient mosaic work of the New Testament of all times.
7 Mausoleo di Teodorico
Erected by Theoderic around 520 as his own resting place, this mausoleum of Istrian
stone is divided into two decagonal orders crowned by a monolithic dome measuring

36 MAR - Museo d’Arte della città di Ravenna, Loggetta Lombardesca
The museum is housed in the Loggetta Lombardesca, a 16th-century monastery
belonging to the close Church of Santa Maria in Porto. Home to many temporary art
exhibitions, the art museum hosts a collection of medieval and modern art and some
contemporary mosaics from the post-war years to the present day. It also includes the
International Centre for the Documentation of Mosaics (CIDM).
9 Museo Nazionale di Ravenna
Housed in the cloisters of the former Benedictine Monastery next to the Basilica of San
Vitale, the museum houses important collections of minor arts (archaeological finds,
precious textiles, ivories, etc.), as well as the cycle of 14th-century frescoes of Santa
Chiara, now Rasi Theatre.
26 Museo Dantesco and Tomba di Dante
Located in the Dantesque centre on the backdrop of the Ancient Franciscan Cloisters,
the museum houses a collection of works inspired by Dante Alighieri. The poet’s
remains rest inside the adjoining Dante’s tomb, built by architect Camillo Morigia in
1780. The lamp burning inside is fed with olive oil offered every year by the city of
Florence on the poet’s death anniversary.
S. Vitale
3 Battistero degli Ariani
It was built in the late 5th century under Theoderic, when the Arian cult was the official
state religion. Nothing remains of the ancient stuccos and decorations of the internal
walls, but the original mosaics of the dome depicting the Baptism of Christ and the
12 apostles can still be seen. The mosaics are an evidence of the Arian beliefs of the
court, though inspired by the iconography of the Baptistery of Neon.
OTHER MONUMENTS AND MUSEUMS
23 Museo Arcivescovile
Situated in the Archiepiscopal Palace of Ravenna, the museum contains numerous
artworks that belonged to the ancient cathedral and to other buildings now demolished.
It contains the throne of Maximian, one of the most renowned ivory carvings of all times
and the work of 6th-century Byzantine artists. The museum is home to the Chapel of
St. Andrew.
Mausoleo di Teodorico
2 Mausoleo di Galla Placidia
This small Mausoleum with a Latin cross plan was built halfway through the 5th
century by Galla Placidia, the sister of Emperor Honorius. However, it was never
used by the Empress because she was buried in Rome. The simplicity of the exterior
contrasts with the lavish decoration of the interior. The countless mosaic stars of the
dome have fascinated many visitors of Ravenna, including the jazz player Cole Porter.
8 Basilica di Sant’Apollinare in Classe
8 km away from the city centre, the basilica was built in the first half of the 6th century
on an ancient burial area, where Saint Apollinaris – one of the first bishops of Ravenna
– was probably buried. The church is one of the greatest examples of Early Christian
basilica. Despite the plundering over the centuries, the basilica has preserved its
original splendour. It is now admired for its polychrome apse mosaics and ancient
marble sarcophagi of archbishops.
13 Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra
The Domus is one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the last decades
in Italy. It consists of a complex of buildings dating back to the Roman Republic up to
the Byzantine period. One of these is particularly interesting: a small palace where
14 rooms and 3 courtyards covered with marble tarsia or mosaics showing refined
patterns and figures made of polychrome tiles have been identified (mid-6th century).
31 Museo TAMO. Tutta l’avventura del mosaico - Complesso di S. Nicolò
TAMO is a space dedicated to the mosaic art and a tour through important finds (some
of which still unknown to the public) belonging to the Ravenna mosaic heritage and to
its territory, from the antiquity to the present day.
47 Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste
The construction of Palazzo Rasponi began in the late 17th century. It was later
called “dalle Teste” because of the blindfolded Moors and lion heads decorating
the windows, along with the crossed lion paws showing the claws (the so-called
rasponi). Today, it houses exhibitions and cultural events.
S. Apollinare in Classe
1 Basilica di San Vitale
Consecrated in 548 AD, it is one of the most important monuments of the Early
Christian art. The eastern influence has a dominant role here: no longer a Basilica
with nave and two aisles but a central octagonal plan topped by a large cupola.
Inside San Vitale, the eyes are drawn up to the mosaic decorations of the apse with
the extraordinary representation of the Byzantine imperial couple, Justinian and
Theodora.
10 m in diameter. Over the centuries, its decorations were gradually stripped off and
the tomb was used for different functions. In its interior, there is a circular porphyry tub
where Theoderic was presumably buried.

UNESCO MONUMENTS
Ravenna is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This is why eight Early
Christian monuments of the city have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List:
“The site is of outstanding universal value being of remarkable significance by virtue of
the supreme artistry of the mosaic art that the monuments contain, and also because
of the crucial evidence that they provide of artistic and religious relationships and
contacts at an important period of European cultural history.”
