In the early 1970’s, the Penang Malay, Chinese and Indian Chambers of Commerce pioneered the idea of getting all the ethnic Chambers in Penang to come together for consensus on issues affecting the various ethnic groups. The Penang Joint Chambers of Commerce (PJCC) was thus officially formalized on 27th June 1974 by the Malay, Chinese and Indian Chambers of Commerce. The Chairmanship of the PJCC is held by rotation among the members for every 2 years. The general objectives of the Penang Joint Chambers of Commerce is to promote, foster and protect the interests of all the business communities who are participating in commercial and industrial activities in Malaysia, and in particular in the State of Penang. The PJCC working committee convened meetings to discuss policy and administrative matters. To obtain and impart business information and act as an "information dissemination center" for business opportuinities in Penang. To act on common economic issues in the state. To cooperate with the state government in promoting official gathering related to commerce and industry. To represent business and industrial interest at home and abroad. PENANG MALAY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, MALAYSIA (PMCC) BACKGROUND In 1959, a group of 20 Malay businessmen in Penang met to discuss the role of Malay businessmen in the state following the country’s independence. Consequently, the ‘Malay Chamber of Commerce, Penang and Province Wellesley’ was formed in the same year. The Chamber was instrumental in helping and uniting Malay businessmen in this country. As of 1973, the chamber became known as Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, Penang Branch congruent with the new Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia Constitution which was accepted by all the Malay chambers in Malaysia. In 1992, the name was changed to Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce, Malaysia. OBJECTIVES: The Chamber plays an important role in fulfilling its principal objectives which include: Integrating Malay businessmen and entrepreneurs in Penang. Establishing a Malay commercial body for the benefit of Malays in the field of commerce and industry. Coordinating members’ activities. To identify and develop business opportunities for the benefit of its members. Producing publications pertaining to trade, industry and commerce. Assisting or representing members in trade discussions, negotiations and the like, at home and abroad. Establishing or assisting corporations, bodies, associations, scholarship trust funds or other welfare organizations. Communicating or coordinating with other corporations or associations having similar objectives. Issuing “Certificate of Origin” for goods exported from Malaysia. It has come a long way since its humble inception and is now one of the strongest commercial institutions in Malaysia in terms of membership and organizational and functional characteristic that is well recognized by both the public and private sectors. In year 2003, the Registrar of Society of Malaysia (ROS) presented the Award Certificate of Excellent Society to the Chamber. It has also been awarded the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System (QMS) Certificate in March 2006 and upgraded to ISO 9001:2008 QMS in March 2010. OBJECTIVE To improve and develop trade and industry. To collect, collate and disseminate commercial information and to issue certificates of authentication. To arbitrate and settle trade and industrial disputes. To collect and compile trade statistics. To organize trade exhibitions, seminars and human resource development programmes either on its own or in collaboration with other institution(s). MEMBERSHIP The Chamber now has more than a thousand membership composed of individuals, corporations as well as commercial associations and trade guilds. The group was later formalized and bore the name “The Penang Indian Chamber of Commerce” and perhaps it is the first Indian Chamber founded in Malaysia. The Chamber is a non-profit Making body, financed entirely from Members Subscriptions, Entrance Fee and surpluses arising from its activities. OBJECTIVES The objectives for which Chamber is established shall be for the promotion, protection and advancement of all interest in relation to Trade, Commerce and Industry of the Malaysian Indian Community in the State of Penang. AFFILIATION The Chamber is affiliated to the Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MAICCI). MAICCI is the apex body of the various State level Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The Chamber is represented on MAICCI as a Council Member is a component member of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Malaysia (NCCIM). According to record, PTA is the oldest Tourism NGO in Penang.
