On The Journey
+Hearing bad news is never easy. It is even harder if that news has serious
ramifications. It is often better, though, to have all the facts, even if they are hard
to take. Planning a course of action becomes easier if we know the worst parts up
front. That seems to be the way Jesus is thinking in today's Gospel.
Now that the Apostles recognize that He is the Messiah and have chosen to
follow Him, He wants them to know the facts. There is bad news. He wants
them to be free to commit themselves to Him and his teaching, or go another way.
Jesus tells his apostles that He will be rejected by all the religious leaders, and
then He will be killed. That is pretty harsh news, but that was not the end of it.
The Apostles, too, will face suffering and death if they continue to follow Him.
They will have to take up their cross daily. It does not sound too appealing.
The Apostles were not asked to declare their loyalty right then. Jesus gave
them time to think things over. For the time being, though, they will continue to
stay with Him. Most certainly, they seriously weighed his words. Perhaps they
did so with the prophecy of Zechariah we heard in today's first reading in their
hearts. It indicates that there would be a day when all of Jerusalem would grieve
over the death of an innocent one who would be like a fountain to purify them of
their sins and bring them back to faithfulness.
They were likely beginning to see that Jesus might be the one the prophets
were speaking of throughout the years; that He was the one who would be slain so

On The Journey (Continued from page 1)
that they might be purified. Of course, we know the rest of the story. We know that all but one of the Apostles ultimately
decided to remain faithful to Jesus. We know that the Holy Spirit came upon them and strengthened them to carry their
crosses daily and to continue the work Jesus had given them.
Today's second reading helps us see that when we accept suffering and death in the name of Jesus, we are truly
counteracting the impact of what most people would see as bad news. We are made children of God and heirs of the promise
of everlasting life. There is no better news for humankind.
Still, it takes faith to live through the bad times in order to obtain the good. Our readings today are reminders that we have
a choice. We have the facts before us, and we are asked to make a commitment. This is not a decision to be made lightly, for
there are serious consequences, regardless of how we choose.
As we take this celebration of Eucharist back with us into our daily lives, let us think about what Jesus is asking of us,
about our level of commitment, and about his promise of everlasting life in heaven. How will you and I respond?
+Today, we help Sr. Rebecca in celebrating her 25th year of professed religious life! We thank her for the commitment that
she has made - to God, to the Adrian Dominicans, and for blessing us with her years of ministry here at St. Andrew. After the
10:45 a.m. Mass, there will be a special reception in the Activity Building honoring Sister, so please join in on the fun!
+As of my writing, our local CSA effort has netted us just a little over half of our target: $209,348 against the goal of
$409,665. I ask that all parish families please step forward in helping supporting the ministries of the diocese, which in turn,
helps us in our ministry at the parish! Thank you for your generosity.
+Someone had an interesting "rumor" that was being spread around - that since we are not at our Changing Lives Together
target of $2.082 million (the goal being $3.9 million), then ALL the money was going "downtown" - not the 30% of the targeted amount. HOW UNTRUE! Remember, as I explained before, the 30% split with the Archdiocese applies only to the first
$2.082 million or any amount under that target. IN NO WAY does the entire amount go to the diocese. And anything raised
over the target remains 100% with the parish. Please don't spread rumors!
As to how the moneys collected will be allocated locally at the parish is as how we presented them to you. If we do not
come up with the amount needed for the entire building project, then those plans will be modified as need be.
+If all has gone well, I have returned from a wedding up on Mackinac Island this past Friday. Nice to get away for just a
couple days. The island is always a fun place to enjoy! Remember that Vacation Bible School is presented here this coming
week (for those who have already registered). I hope that all our little angels will have a great time!
+As we officially enter into summer, may we all be blessed with warm, wonderful weather to be able to enjoy the nature
which surrounds us! But don't let that prevent me from seeing you in church!

Sharing the Light: Parish Finances
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord:
The sacramental, ministerial, and operational strength of our parishes in southeast Michigan is a
reflection of the pastoral leadership, the commitment and generosity of the lay faithful, and
community evangelization unique to each parish. Our parishes make it possible for us to fulfill our
archdiocesan mission of sharing Christ in and through the Church. This is our mission as one people
of faith in the Archdiocese of Detroit – to bring ourselves, our loved ones, our friends, and our
neighbors to know the love of Jesus Christ.
The strength and vitality of a parish can be measured through the involvement of the faithful in
sacramental life including Mass attendance and participation in reconciliation, engagement in parish
ministries such as Christian service to those in need, and in financial contributions that provide the
wherewithal for parish and archdiocesan ministries and operations.
On the recommendations of two commissions I appointed in 2009, it was clear that reforms to
archdiocesan Central Services finances and operations had to be implemented. As a practical matter,
and as a matter of good stewardship, it was necessary to initiate and sustain these changes. While more
needs to be done, we have achieved much. To be good stewards of the resources provided by you, the
faithful, we have also implemented reforms to improve the transparency of financial information and
parishioner engagement in every parish of the Archdiocese of Detroit.
In 2011, for the first time in more than two decades, we updated the handbook that outlines policies
and procedures for every parish in the Archdiocese. In addition to every parish being required to have a
parish pastoral council, every parish must now also have a finance council. It is my intent that these and
other improvements will foster better collaboration and oversight involving pastors and lay leaders, and
more firmly establish a culture of Christian stewardship in each parish. It is my intent to continue these
reforms among parishes and archdiocesan Central Services to change the culture for our common work.
While I have previously communicated on archdiocesan financial issues, it is appropriate to offer
you the opportunity to better understand how your financial generosity is administered by your parish
and your Archdiocese. I encourage you to learn more about parish finances, by visiting
www.aod.org/sharingthelight/parishfinances/.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
The Most Rev. Allen H. Vigneron
Archbishop of Detroit

Prayer for Immigrants
God of the journey, God of the
traveler, We pray for those who leave
their homes in search of new
beginnings and possibilities, may they
know your presence with them.
We pray that those who seek to
make a home in this country, may find
us welcoming and willing to help them
find a path toward citizenship.
We pray that our legislators, as they
craft new immigration legislation may
find the wisdom and courage to enact
new policies that do justice for our
country and for those who would
immigrate here.
We pray for those who fan the flames
of fear and discrimination against the
undocumented, that they may be
touched with your divine compassion.
We pray in Jesus' name.
Amen.

Care & Share is July 7th for FREEDOM HOUSE
Freedom House has provided comprehensive support
(housing, education, and training, English as a Second
Language (ESL), medical/psychological help, and legal aid) to
asylum seekers for 30 years. Funding for this mission comes
from a variety of sources including the federal government/
Housing and Urban Development; Community Development
Block Grants; the United Nations; as well as donations of cash,
service and supplies from many area churches, organizations
and individuals. Thank you for being a loyal supporter
through your Parish Tithing Program
Many donations, grants in particular, are restricted to
specific activities and expenses. Not all of the ongoing expenses
of maintaining complete support for 35 refugees and assistance
for many “asylees” for 6-8 months after they receive asylum
and leave Freedom House, are covered by our grants. To put it
succinctly, Freedom House is ALWAYS seeking additional
donations to help with the daily costs of housing so many
people who are all suffering the ills of having been persecuted,
tortured or threatened with their lives.
Some of the greatest needs are in two particular areas:
Personal Hygiene Items and Paper Products. So the July 7
Care & Share Collection is for the following items: toothpaste
& brushes, shampoo, body lotion, deodorant, bar soap (no
liquid soaps), razors, shaving cream, paper towels, Kleenex, and
rolls of toilet tissue. Please bring your donations in double bags
to the Information Center area marked Care & Share in the
Chapel hallway, on the July 7th weekend only.
Thank you in advance for helping to provide some needed
items for the Freedom House residents that are in transition.
Please know that you are all blessed by their prayers!

SAVE THE DATE
Please mark your calendars for the weekend of October 26/27 th
as a Have to Be There Date.
St. Andrew Parish will draw its Centennial Year
celebration to a solemn close that weekend with some very special Liturgies.
Former Pastors and Associate Pastors
will be invited to participate at the Masses that weekend and,
although nothing is set now,
we can tell you that Archbishop Allen Vigneron
has agreed to kick off the weekend by presiding at the Saturday 5:00 PM Mass.
Following each weekend Liturgy there will be a social in the
Activities Building where you can toast
St. Andrew as we continue being a Community of Faith
into the next hundred years and say hello to some old friends.
Since the first Mass was celebrated in October, 1912,
we wanted to celebrate as close to that date as possible.
So, mark it on your calendar in big red letters and
plan to take part in one or more of the Masses that weekend.
Keep reading the bulletin for more information.

The Ultimate
“Man Card”
DO
UT!
!!
See you on
June 24th!!
The Man Card. It’s become a joke over the last
few years among men that if one of the guys is
caught doing something “not manly” his
membership in the “man club” is revoked, and
he has to turn in his “man card.” There are
some who also contend that once the man card
has been revoked, it would take a heroic act of
“manliness” to earn it back.
Whatever the status of your “man card” is, we
have the ultimate act of manliness for any of
the guys in the parish. Tim did it this past year,
and his whole life changed in amazing ways.
Andy has been doing it for years and has
literally transformed hundreds of lives.
You don’t need a card, or to be as tough as
Chuck Norris. You just need to know that God
is the center of all things and that living for God
is the best way to live. Curious? Email John at

Prayer is a fundamental principle of Christian stewardship. St. Luke, in today’s Gospel, emphasizes that
Jesus always took time to pray before major decisions or events in His ministry. As St. Padre Pio stated,
Prayer is the oxygen for the soul. Making time for daily prayer is essential for our spiritual journey, and for us
to advance in discipleship. Jesus indicates in this Gospel passage that discipleship also requires
acknowledging Him as Messiah, denial of self, daily shouldering of one’s cross, and selfless love for others.
Year of Faith
“Undoubtedly not all men are alike as
regards
physical
capacity
and
intellectual and moral powers. But
forms
of
social
or
cultural
discrimination in basic personal rights
on the grounds of sex, race, color,
social conditions, language or religion,
must be curbed or eradicated as
incompatible with God’s design. It is
regrettable that these basic personal
rights are not being respected
everywhere, as in the case with women
who are denied the chance freely to
choose a husband, or a state of life, or
to have access to the same
educational and cultural benefits as are
available to men.” Gaudium et Spes 29
Prayer
Father, teach us to cooperate with
each other rather than to compete,
to respect each other rather than to
revile,
to forgive rather than to condemn.
Jesus turned from no one. Teach us to
be like him.
May we forge a bond of love that will
make a living reality of the family that
you created the human race to be.
Amen.
