Exclusive art and culture against a spectacular
backdrop – the open-air stage at the Hermannsdenkmal, which the Landesverband Lippe opened
to the public in the “Varus” year of 2009, promises
just this.
This stage could not be in a better position:
situated on the edge of a former stone quarry
and with direct views of the Hermannsdenkmal,
we invite you to experience concerts, stage plays,
festivals and cinema in a quite unique atmosphere. The open-air stage is the sustainable
conclusion to the existing offer in the area
surrounding the Monument.

Presenting the
Landesverband Lippe
With the support of various engineers, he developed the construction of the inner iron frame. One
of the models of this can now
be seen in the Lippisches Landesmuseum in Detmold. Finally, in
1862, work on the monument
resumed.
Situated in the midst of the health and cultural region
of Ostwestfalen-Lippe, the Lemgo-based Landesverband
Lippe is responsible for the heritage that has been passed
from the State of Lippe to the Landesverband Lippe
owing to historical development.
The tasks of the Landesverband Lippe include:
Archäologisches Freilichtmuseum Oerlinghausen
Monuments and real estate
The Externsteine at Holzhausen-Externsteine
The Hermannsdenkmal at Detmold
Lippische Kulturagentur
Lippische Landesbibliothek Detmold
Lippisches Landesmuseum Detmold
Malerstadt Schwalenberg
Musikburg Sternberg
Staatsbad Meinberg GmbH
Wald- und Forstmuseum Heidelbeck
Weserrenaissance-Museum Schloss Brake
approx. 15,900 hectares of forest
approx. 3,300 hectares of agricultural land
The Landesverband Lippe considers itself a modern
service provider for people in Lippe. It is particularly
committed to the region’s cultural, scientific and
educational facilities.
The wide range of tasks and duties of the
Landesverband Lippe ranges from active cultural
work and the protection of nature and historical
monuments to promoting health and tourism
facilities.
The Landesverband Lippe and the activities for which
it is responsible are also important economic factors
for Lippe: its active asset policy sets structureenhancing accents in towns and communities.
Monument development
and creation
The Iron Age walled castle, the
“Grosse Hünenring” within which
the Hermannsdenkmal was constructed, covers an area of some 11
hectares.
The man behind the plan to erect a
monument to the Cherusci war chief
at this point that would be visible from
afar - was Ernst von Bandel. He lived, a
sculptor and architect, for many years
in Hanover and Berlin. Bandel
sacrificed all his private assets to his
life’s work, the construction of the
Hermannsdenkmal.
Ernst von Bandel –
life’s work
Ernst von Bandel’s first sketches date back
to 1819, when the memory of the Napoleonic
Wars was still alive.
He was not alone in considering the
Battle of the Nations in Leipzig in 1813 –
which sealed Napoleon’s fate – as the
symbol of the recovery of national unity.
Monuments such as the Hermannsdenkmal were intended to help to
create democratic legitimisation.
After the Napoleonic Wars,
there was no more a single
Germany as a state than
there was a single German
nation. Central Europe
consisted of 38 sovereign
states that were bound in
the German Confederation
by the German Federal Act
of 1815 agreed upon in Vienna.
Despite the greatest difficulties, in 1838
the foundation stone was laid for the
monument and the plinth was
constructed.
Ernst von Bandel was born in
Ansbach in Bavaria on 17 May 1800.
At the age of 16 he started an
apprenticeship in Munich at the
“Architectural School of the Academy”. Two years later, he produced
the first drawings for a Hermannsdenkmal or “Arminius Column”, as he
himself always called it.
Bandel would not be swayed from his idea
of building a monument to the Cherusci
war chief. He lived and worked in Detmold
from 1837 until 1846. During this time, he
completed the base construction for the
monument, which was inaugurated in
1838. Then, though, things stood still. After
arguing with the friends association,
Bandel ended up moving to Hanover.
Although he had never drawn any
wages for his efforts, there were no
funds for the remainder of the building
work. The workshops on the Grotenburg
fell into disrepair. However, Bandel worked
on tirelessly in Hanover.
In the autumn of 1873, Bandel
returned to the construction site in
the Teutoburg Forest. At the age of
73, the artist was finally able to
complete his life’s work.
However, completing the monument,
which took until the summer of
1875, took the last of his strength.
The inauguration was on 16 August,
and the medal presented to him by
Wilhelm I was very late acknowledgement of his achievements.
Sadly, he was not to enjoy any lasting recognition for his life’s work.
Ernst von Bandel died just a year
after the unveiling of the monument, on 25 September 1876.
