For example, the average number of transactions per month, a preference for counter service or automatic banking machines, age or the capacity to save. That’s why we offer you a series of accounts, plans and programs to help you take care of everyday business. You’ll see, there’s something for every habit. It’s up to you to find the solution or solutions that simplify your life the most and that cut your bank charges to a minimum. Simultaneously. Obviously. You’ll see, there’s something for every habit. 1.1 6 7 My personal bank account We don’t like to complicate things for nothing. But there are a few other little tricks as well. Tip 1 Tip 2 Tip 3 Tip 4 › › › › Maintain the minimum monthly balance required If you don’t have a banking plan, the simple act of getting one lets you avoid transaction and account management fees. Also, avoid having too many bank accounts. Instead, regroup all your funds in a single account with our Red Carpet Simplified Service. This is simpler to manage and it keeps charges from piling up. Take out more money less often Since you pay fees for each transaction, it is not in your interest to regularly make small withdrawals or transfers. Not only does that cost you money, but your frequent trips to ABMs are a waste of your valuable time. Avoid paying your bills at the branch Transactions at the branch are the most costly. So unless you have a banking plan or a program that covers them, opt for transactions at an automated banking machine or through LBCDirect – we tell you all about that In point 2.1. Ask for Overdraft Protection Cheques and direct debits without sufficient funds cost a bundle: $45.00 to be precise, and your financial reputation takes a hit. So why take the risk of that happening to you when you can avoid it with our Overdraft Protection? It provides protection from $250 to $1,500 against a temporary shortfall of funds. And since you only pay fees when you use it - $5.00 per month of usage plus the applicable interest on the overdraft – it’s a real bargain to keep your peace of mind, and your reputation, intact. 15 Tip 5 Tip 6 Tip 7 › › › Take advantage of direct payment When you make purchases, make INTERAC®6 Direct Payment your preferred choice. It’s fast and some retailers even let you withdraw funds. If you need cash, kill two birds with one stone. It saves you a trip to a branch and since time is money, you’re a double winner. Choose our automated banking machines When you are a Laurentian Bank client, it’s always in your best interest to use automated banking machines because there are no user fees in addition to transaction fees. At other institutions’ ABMs, it could cost you $1.50 in INTERAC®6 fees per transaction plus any applicable surcharges from the institution that owns the ABM. By prepared when you make a stop payment If you have all your information with you, the charges for your request will be less expensive ($13.00 instead of $16.50) than if you are missing papers and the Bank has to conduct research to find them. 16 2 17 My funds, my transactions When you’re always on the go and torn between work, family, leisure activities and obligations, it’s not always possible to get to the Bank during business hours to carry out transactions and take care of everyday business. It is exactly for this reason that there are all sorts of ways you can access your funds. No need to rush or stress out to get to the Bank in time because now, you can enjoy access to your account anytime and from almost anywhere, to carry out just about all your transactions when and how you please. Freely. Calmly. No need to rush or stress out to get to the Bank in time because now, you can enjoy access to your account anytime and from almost anywhere! 18 2.1 19 My account access My branch My client card and ABMs My Direct Payment service My other access modes to my funds My telephone and LBCDirect Internet services It’s only natural that your branch is your primary contact with the Bank. For many services – starting with the opening of an account – you have to go there. If you also prefer to conduct your transactions there because you like the human contact, we advise you to take a banking plan or program that includes them to limit your costs. Service charges in the branch are higher per item than those for automated services. Without a banking plan or program, the bill could become heavy pretty quickly. Your client card is your key to use a host of electronic services: Laurentian Bank automated banking machines, the INTERAC®6 network in Canada and the PLUS®6 network in the rest of the world, and INTERAC®6 Direct Payment. To get a client card, just ask for it at your branch. Then you can use it in complete security to carry out transactions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The INTERAC®6 Direct Payment service lets you use your client card to pay for your purchases at more than 87,000 merchants in Quebec that have an INTERAC® terminal on site. When you pay, the money is automatically debited directly from your Bank account, exactly as if you were paying in cash. Even though there are already all kinds of ways to access your funds, there are still two more that you can use to manage your funds and settle affairs from your account: Sign up for LBCDirect telebanking service and do your banking by phone or online from home, the office or anywhere else, when and how it suits you. With LBCDirect telebanking services, you don’t have to go to your branch; your branch comes to you. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll never want to do without it! Your client card lets you easily access your bank account to withdraw money and make deposits or transfers, pay bills or make purchases at retailers affiliated with the INTERAC®6 Direct Payment service. ›› ›› cheque payment direct debit The first is a flexible payment method that you manage independently as you need it. The second gives you access to your funds to pay bills or accounts without you having to think about it, except to discipline yourself to set aside funds in a savings account for a specific goal (e.g. trip, new home, studies, etc.). 20 21 LBCDIRECT easy less expensive secure MAIN BANKING OPERATIONS THAT CAN BE PERFORMED THROUGH LBCDIRECT SERVICES Banking operations Check your account balance Transfer funds between accounts Make deposits and withdrawals Consult current bills Pay bills Receive bills and statements and store them for seven years with epost™ – the Laurentian Bank online service Subscribing to services Secure services It’s easy ! On a trip, on a necessity, for a treat or an outing, and whether planned or unplanned all these opportunities and temptations seem to arise or pop up everywhere. If on top of that you always had to have the cash on hand to pay for everything, you’d never get out of the woods! It’s a good thing there’s credit – especially the kind that comes in a card – to give you the latitude to manage your affairs and occasionally treat yourself without always having to dip into your account right then and there. When used well, credit is a tool that can work wonders and even reward you. Usefully. Flexibly. So it’s in your best interest to take care of it. Believe us, it’s way better to err on the side of caution when you use your contact information, your personal identification number (PIN), a password or any other security code. The rule is simple: never, ever disclose your personal information unless you are sure that it is safe to do so. Totally. Completely. Absolutely. The rule is simple: never, ever disclose your personal information ... 38 5.1 How my banking operations are protected Client cards You see, your PINs are the keys that open the doors to your bank accounts or the funds available on your credit card. To protect your money, here is a list of the main things to do and not to do when using your client cards. 39 Protecting my online operations Carrying out transactions online is very practical. But it also takes vigilance. You have to exercise caution here, as well. And not just once – over and over! Measures to keep your online operations secure RECOMMENDATIONS TO PROTECT YOUR CLIENT CARDS Never send confidential information (account numbers, card numbers, passwords, etc.) by email. The Bank never emails its clients to ask them for personal or confidential information. Always choose a different PIN or password for each of your cards. To go to your LBCDirect Online Banking Services site, you must always use Laurentian Bank’s official website address: www.laurentianbank.ca. Choose a PIN or a code that is easy for you to remember, but difficult to guess. Never choose your date of birth, your phone number or any other code of this type. Avoid using software that records passwords. Always memorize your PINs and passwords. Don’t write them down anywhere and never give them to anyone. Always keep an eye on your card during an operation and never lend it to anyone. Always shield the keypad when you enter your PIN at a banking machine or on an INTERAC® point-of-sale terminal. Never leave your computer unattended during an LBCDirect session. Always close an LBCDirect session by clicking on the link in the upper-right corner of the screen. Always empty your browser cache after each LBCDirect session. Use a recommended browser with 128-bit encryption. Check your account and credit card statements regularly. If there are any anomalies, contact us right away. Install efficient antivirus software and a firewall, and update them regularly. Immediately notify us if one of your cards is lost or stolen. Never download software or accept a file attachment when accessing websites, chat rooms or newsgroups unless you are absolutely sure of their authenticity. Contact us ASAP if you have any reason to believe the security of your cards or PIN is compromised. Disable the computer’s file sharing function. Before conducting an online financial transaction with your credit card, ALWAYS make sure that you are on a secure site – in the browser’s status bar in the lower-right corner of the screen, there should be an icon of a locked lock, and the address of the website should start with the letters “https” (which confirm that this is a secure site). By double clicking on the lock, you should be able to ascertain the legitimacy of the security certificate issued for it. Transaction actions The more precautions you take, the more verifications you make, the safer your business and the fewer hackers you’ll interest! 40 5.2 41 My precautions In addition to anti-fraud precautions, there are general precautions to take in your everyday activities, when using your debit or credit cards or when online. The point is to make vigilance a habit and to take every precaution. PRECAUTIONS TABLE PRECAUTIONS TABLE (cont.) General or everyday precautions ›› P ay attention to your regular billing cycle. If one of your bills stops being delivered or doesn’t arrive as often on its regular date, tell the company concerned. ›› B e careful with your social insurance number. Your social insurance number is a key piece of your identity. ›› A lways be sure to take back your debit or credit card after a purchase. Be doubly careful on trips, where the consequences of a memory lapse could be even more disagreeable. ›› Always check that the card returned to you is actually yours. ›› Check the amount of any bill before signing it. ›› N ever leave your receipts or bank statements lying around, especially not in the car, not even in a locked glove compartment. ›› R egister your bills and bank statements in the online electronic statement service. They will be less vulnerable to retrieval by a dishonest individual. ›› T rust your instincts. If a place seems shady to you, pay cash or don’t buy anything if you don’t have cash on hand. Specific precautions with debit and credit cards ›› Sign the back of your credit cards as soon as you receive them. ›› Immediately report any loss or theft. ›› Do not use a banking machine that looks abnormal or that offers questionable or unfamiliar options. ›› Choose a personal identification number (PIN) that is easy to remember but that has nothing to do with your date of birth, telephone number or your children’s personal information. ›› Memorize your PIN. Do not write it on your card or on any paper that you keep with you. Not even in code, for example by adding a 1 to every number (e.g., 234567 for 123456). A code can be figured out. ›› Never lend your cards or give your PIN to anyone. ›› Change your PIN regularly. ›› Keep your receipts and check that the transactions carried out on your account are those you actually made. ›› Make a list of all your credit card numbers and keep it in a safe place. It’s practical in case of loss, theft or fraud. Internet precautions ›› Use passwords that are easy to memorize but difficult to guess. ›› Never write down your passwords anywhere – especially not in your computer memory – and never give them to anyone. ›› Change your passwords regularly. ›› Install antivirus software, antispyware and a personal firewall on your computer. Update them regularly. ›› Regularly update your browsers (Explorer, Firefox, etc.) and operating system (Windows, Mac OS, etc.). The updates help resolve security vulnerabilities. ›› Before opening a session to perform a financial transaction on a website, make sure that the site is secure. If it is, there will be an icon of a locked lock on the right side of the browser’s status bar and the page’s address will start with “https//”. As soon as your session is completed, don’t forget to end it by clicking on the link for this purpose (“end of session”, “log out” or something similar). 42 6 43 My complementary info, my contacts There are also lots of other things to know about money management and banking matters.
