2012 Annual Report - Alice Hyde Medical Center
2012 Annual Report Transformation Transformation Douglas F. DiVello, MPH, FACHE President/CEO It’s been nearly a year since I joined the Alice Hyde Medical Center family. It was clear to me, from day one, that our Board of Directors, medical staff, employees, and the people we serve, care deeply about the future of their hospital. Whether I was walking down an aisle in a store, hosting an employee forum, or talking to a provider in the cafeteria, the message was the same—you want us to flourish. I was inspired by your encouragement and I’m proud of what we have been able to accomplish in my first ten months on the job. As the new CEO of Alice Hyde Medical Center, my goal is to ensure that we continue our devotion to our mission with exceptional care and hard work and begin a transformation that will elevate the level of health care we provide our patients and nursing home residents, and ensure our community’s faith in the institution. This past year we paused to find our balance. This included taking care of our financial health, adjusting our approach to patient care, and restructuring our management strategy. And, with balance comes clarity—for us, that meant we developed a new focus on patient care, including making deliberate efforts to add value to each and every patient experience with a new model of patient centered care, ease of access to urgent and primary care services as well as the addition of holistic medicine. We are continuing to build on the foundation that supports the evolution of the nation’s health care delivery system. We are making changes in our organization that will prepare us for a new era in health care. We must be prepared to face reimbursement reductions now and in the future. Our goal is to continue providing care that will surpass our peers, and more importantly, surpass the expectations of our customers and our community. How will this impact our patients? Patients will receive care of exceptional quality, close to home, and in a timely manner. Transformation doesn’t occur overnight. At a time when Medicare is the nation’s largest insurance program, reducing health care costs is crucial to our financial viability. We will continue to meet our community’s dynamic needs for diverse and specialized care in an affordable manner. This will require creative and unique ways of working with our neighboring hospitals, and finding new and innovative ways of delivering quality care in the most efficient way possible. By working together and creating a new paradigm, we will thrive in this era of health care reform. By empowering ourselves to give patients the care they trust and experiences they will value, we will see our organization through a transformation that will guarantee another 100 years of excellence. 1 2012 Annual Report| alicehyde.com From the Medical Staff President A new chapter began for Alice Hyde Medical Center in 2012—we were pleased to welcome new President and CEO, Douglas F. DiVello. He has demonstrated a willingness to maintain an open dialogue with the Medical Staff. This collegial environment allows for the exchange of ideas and our collaboration will ensure our continued progression and enhancement of our patients’ experiences. Dr. Mordechai Rehany Medical Staff President In the past year, we ensured that our patients continued to receive exceptional care and we remained focused on maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality. To that end, I am pleased to report that we welcomed highly trained and skilled providers and successfully elevated our standard of care through national accreditation: · In 2012, we were joined by Dr. Anthony Vaccaro, Radiation Oncologist; Dr. Keon Menzies, Cardiologist; Dr. Nalie Nguyen, Dentist; and Deborah Norris, Family Nurse Practitioner. · Our laboratory earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with national standards for health care quality and safety. · The Medical Imaging Department was awarded a three-year term of accreditation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) as the result of a review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of medical imaging quality and patient safety. Alice Hyde Medical Center, like many hospitals across the country, continues to face challenges recruiting primary care physicians. However, we are fortunate to have an outstanding team of nurse practitioners and physician assistants who provide exceptional care for patients in our community health centers, physician offices, and walk-in clinic. These health care professionals are integral to fulfilling our mission of ‘Building of Healthier Community Together’. As President of the Medical Staff, I look forward to working with the entire Alice Hyde Medical Center team to continue to enhance our services to meet the dynamic needs of our patients and community members. Medical Executive Committee Dr. Mordi Rehany Dr. Emile Benardot President Vice President Dr. Noel Varghese Dr. Bernard Gelbard Dr. Myrna Sanchez Dr. Emile Benardot Secretary/Treasurer Chair, Dept. of Medicine Chair, Dept. of Surgery Chair, Dept. of Female & Child Health 2012 Annual Report| alicehyde.com 2 Highlights of 2012 Alice Hyde Medical Center welcomed new President and Chief Executive Officer, Douglas F. DiVello, MPH, FACHE. (Excerpts from The Malone Telegram, Arianna MacNeill) Mr. DiVello, a seasoned health care professional with more than 25 years of senior management experience leading hospital teams to high performance and exceptional care, joined Alice Hyde Medical Center in July 2012. Upon Mr. DiVello’s arrival to AHMC, Dean Johnston, AHMC Board of Directors Chair commented, “On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are very pleased that we have been able to recruit an individual of Doug’s caliber.” “We believe he will be a dynamic asset to the Medical Center and instrumental in building on our achievements as we continue to fulfill our mission of building a healthier community together.” Before joining Alice Hyde Medical Center, Mr. DiVello served as Vice President of Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine since 2002. Prior to that, he served in a number of key administration roles in community and academic health care organizations including Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Maimonides Medical Center in Mr. DiVello visiting the employees of the AHMC Laboratory Department. From the left, Penny Rolland, Certified Phlebotomist; Douglas F. DiVello, MPH, FACHE, President/CEO; New York, and Kennedy Memorial Courtney Martin, Laboratory Quality Systems Analyst Healthcare and St. Joseph’s Hospital in New Jersey. Mr. DiVello received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Western Maryland College and his Master’s Degree in public health care administration from Long Island University. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. “Alice Hyde Medical Center is clearly devoted to high quality patient care and to service excellence,” said DiVello. “Our team recognizes their role in assuring that the Medical Center continues to be an organization committed to elevating the region’s health status, and as a driver in the local economy,” he said. That is precisely the kind of organization I want to be a part of and to continue to help lead and nurture.” • In May, Alice Hyde Medical Center was pleased and honored to announce the naming of the Martin J. Leroux Health Center, formerly known as the Salmon River Health Center in Fort Covington. The dedication was in memory of Phil and Dolly Leroux’s son. • The Alice Hyde Dental Center began offering a dental treatment called Invisalign, a modern and virtually invisible technique for straightening and realigning teeth. • In 2012, we were joined by Dr. Anthony Vaccaro, Radiation Oncologist; Dr. Keon Menzies, Cardiologist; Dr. Nalie Nguyen, Dentist; and Deborah Norris, Family Nurse Practitioner. 3 2012 Annual Report| alicehyde.com Highlights of 2012 • Our laboratory earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with national standards for health care quality and safety. • The Alice Hyde Walk-In Clinic was opened to provide easy and affordable access to patients with non-life threatening health concerns. The clinic, open 7 days a week, is designed for patients experiencing symptoms that do not require an Emergency Department visit. • SeaComm completed its generous $20,000 pledge with the presentation of a $5,000 check to the Medical Center. At the check presentation SeaComm President & Chief Executive Officer Scott Wilson commented, “We are extremely pleased to provide Alice Hyde Medical Center with our financial support. The hospital is a cornerstone of the greater Malone community and continues to meet the healthcare needs of our friends and neighbors, which is extremely important to us.” AHMC took a monumental step to integrate a whole new approach to medicine in partnership with Wholistic Care, owned by Kalpana Reddy. (Excerpts from The Malone Telegram, Arianna MacNeill) The Wholistic Healing Program, which will unfold in phases, engages the mind, body, and spirit in a patient’s healing process. Discussions of Wholistic Care being integrated into the Reddy Cancer Treatment Center treatment program began in the fall of 2011 and since then a group of volunteers have been trained to provide holistic treatment. “It’s about healing the whole person, mind, body, and spirit,” said Kalpana Reddy. “In the early stages of cancer, there could be healing and even in the later stages you could work with the spirit. Just working with the body is not enough.” Reddy said that bringing holistic treatment into medical centers is something fairly new. “We are providing something that not all the other places have yet,” she said. “I am happy we are pioneers in this area.” With the cancer center’s success, hospital officials have decided to move forward with integrating Wholistic Care into the general surgery department. Two surgeons, Dr. Rahul Gupta and Dr. Nikalesh Reddy, have agreed to offer holistic care to their patients before and after surgery. “I am a firm believer that a lot of the outcomes of human healing is not purely technical,” said Dr. Gupta. “I think Wholistic Care, it may be a small part of a big puzzle. One good thing will be to see the response. I think it will be very positive response.” Kalpana Reddy opened the Wholistic Care, a center for holistic medicine that is located on the Medical Center campus in 2006. Reddy has worked with the hospital for a few years; in 2008, she became the employee life services consultant and coach for those who work at the Medical Center. • Alice Hyde Medical Center invited the community to attend a special evening of celebration at its 3rd annual Silver and Black Gala held at the Malone Golf Club. The evening, supported by underwriters, Dr. Anjni Bhagat and Dr. Rajiv Shah, raised nearly $33,500 to support the purchase of an enhanced cardiac monitoring system for the Emergency Department. • The Medical Imaging Department was awarded a three-year term of accreditation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) as the result of a review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of medical imaging quality and patient safety. 2012 Annual Report| alicehyde.com 4 Highlights of 2012 The Medical Center improved the patient care experience for its medical and surgical patients with the introduction of “patient centered care” and converted to private rooms in an effort to improve patient and family satisfaction. These changes promote healing and reduce infections, as well as, increase patient safety by reducing falls, medical errors, and improve the quality of care delivery model. Health care facilities are more aware of the growing body of scientific evidence that shows that there are benefits to a quiet, calming, and healing environment. The word “healing” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word haelen, which means to make whole. One way to understand the term is harmony of the whole person including the mind, body, and spirit. The initiative included design changes that nurtures patient-centered and holistic care model that meets the needs of patients, family members, and staff. The private and semi-private rooms reduce noise and confusion that may leave a patient feeling anxious, sad, or helpless which may raise blood pressure, heart rates, and increase muscle tension. Hormones released in response to stress may suppress a patient’s immune system causing wounds to heal more slowly. Healing environments can reduce stress and anxiety, which positively affects our health in a number of ways and as a result patients experience more rest. The medical and surgical rooms are equipped with a single bed and new furniture purchased by the AHMC Auxiliary, including bedside stands, over-bed tables, and room chairs for patients and their family members. The Auxilians and nursing staff, sitting from left, Becky Livernois, Molly McKee, Theresa Bashaw, Linda Sprague, Tammy Auxiliary generously Reynolds, RN, Director of Medical Surgical Services; Standing from left, Linda McClarigan, RN, BSN, MSHA, VP of Patient Care Services, Cindy Soper, Shirley Davis, Clarice Champagne, Sherry Langdon, Lynda Basiliere, Kathy donated $74,000 so Evans, Theresa LeRoy, Pat Maneely, Auxiliary President, Denise MacDonald, LPN, Jill Benware, RN, Emily Rivera, Nurse Aide that patients may benefit from the amenities and comfort that private rooms offer. In addition, the patient rooms are decorated with donated artwork and photographs featuring nature scenes to add to the calming effect of the new “patient centered care” experience. • Dr. William R. Latreille, Jr., FACP, was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) at its annual House of Delegates meeting held in Saratoga, NY. • The Medical Center received a $5,000 donation for the Reddy Cancer Treatment Center from the Alice Hyde Medical Center Auxiliary, together with NBT Bank, Latremore Insurance, Adirondack for Kids, and the Lions Club, sponsors of a concert performed by The Gibson Brothers to benefit the Cancer Center. 5 2012 Annual Report| alicehyde.com New Physicians of 2012 Dr. Keon Menzies, a cardiology specialist, completed his medical training at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University.
