Father Joe’s Week:
Last Thursday, Fr. McKenna and I went to
Applebee’s for lunch and then to see “Me and Earl
and the Dying Girl.” It was a youth, coming of age,
and friendship film, well made and acted. It has
received several awards, an independent movie, I
think. Worth seeing for teens, and something that
would bring up serious discussion…By the time I got
back on Thursday, I decided to leave my car in the
garage for the weekend. Things were already in place
on the parking lot for the festival, and I didn’t want
to leave the car out…Friday afternoon I got a ride to
the doctor’s office for a regular checkup—all of which
was in fine fettle. All my blood work was perfect,
always good to know…I walked back from the
doctor’s, stopping at TJ MAXX and Abbott’s. Things
were moving along on our parking lot and we were in
full festival mode. I enjoyed the Mexican food booth
and opened many blank rolled up pieces of paper. Fr.
McKenna showed up for supper, enjoying our
burgers and fries. I especially enjoyed the Brockport
Big Band—they played at least three Glenn Miller
arrangements, always a highlight…I got to bed late
that night, not sure why, but there it is…The festival
continued on Saturday, and I continued to open
blank rolled up pieces of paper. The workers
eventually took pity on me and let me win a couple of
kitchen tools. I tried the Italian sausage, which was
extra fine, for lunch. We also had a lovely
demonstration of Mexican dance…After confessions
and Mass I enjoyed the chicken bbq and the country
band. All the prize booths sold out, as did the bbq.
The whole festival was over at about 9pm. I went in
to help strap bills and count coins for the audit team,
and got to bed at a decent hour…Thanks to all who
worked on the festival. There is an article in today’s
bulletin that names the captains of the different parts
of the festival, and they deserve the gratitude of the
whole parish. Taking responsibility for your parish is
a key to discipleship. Thanks also to all who helped
them in any way…Sunday I went to Unity to anoint a
parishioner, then to Fr. Tom Wheeland’s monthly
priests’ dinner…Monday I was covering Unity
hospital all day—all the priests around here take one
day a month to take the emergency calls…Tuesday I
learned that Annina Ciola had passed away, so I went
to Fowler’s to meet with the family and plan the
funeral. That afternoon I went to anoint a
parishioner at home, then to Unity to visit
parishioners…Wednesday I went to Beikirch to
anoint…God bless and have a good week!
