Director’s Dashboard
Today, if you work in a hospital or have anything
to do with providing patient care, you know how
important Patient Satisfaction is to the quality of
healthcare. At North Shore University Hospital,
(NSUH), volunteers play a huge role in increasing
patient satisfaction. We have many programs that
enable volunteers to interact directly with patients
and their families. Some of these programs include:
Friendly Visitors, the MealTime Mate Feeding Program,
the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP), Pet Therapy, Stroke

Peer Visitation and our Mended Hearts Program just to name
a few. I have been told by many of our volunteers that these
programs not only increase patient satisfaction but increase the
satisfaction in their own lives as well!
If you know someone who has a few hours a week to
spare and would like to volunteer at North Shore University
Hospital, we would love to discuss with them the many
different and interesting opportunities and flexible

Auxiliary President’s Message
It’s hard to believe that six months have passed
since I once again became President of the
Auxiliary at NSUH. Our focus has been on fund
raising, community outreach and supporting
many wonderful hospital events and celebrations.
Throughout the year the Auxiliary has sponsored
and supported several programs such as the Three
Center of Excellence Nursing Awards honoring our nurses
and six very deserving volunteer high school seniors for their
service and dedication to NSUH and the Wellness Sponsor for the
5th Annual Every Woman Matters Walk.
This year our fundraising events have reached $1.35 million
towards our $2 million dollar pledge to support construction costs
to build a new Air Ambulance Helipad which will be located on
the roof of the Tower building at NSUH. This was to be a 10 year
commitment, but I would say, we are way ahead of schedule!
The 36th Annual Golf Classic held on July 14, 2014 at the North
Shore Country Club in Glen Head, raised over $240,000. At this
event, we presented a check for $200,000 to Sandro Bellucci,
MD, Executive Director, NSUH.
Our Car Raffle was also a great success raising almost $30,000.
In addition to raising funds, we also continue to support other

services in the hospital including: Chaplaincy Care, Stroke Club,
Aids Transportation, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
Program, and free Diabetes screening in the community through
our partnership with North Shore–LIJ Lions Club. Our newest
venture helps underwrite the HELP Program (Hospital Elder Life
Program). These additional donations will total over $35,000.

satisfying experience and would like to join the North
Shore University Hospital Auxiliary, please contact the

join, and you do not have to be a volunteer to become a
member of our Auxiliary.
Niedel’s Point
Wouldn’t it be great if we could clone
ourselves? I have a friend who grew
up in the Rockaways, just as I did. We
went to the same elementary school, both
attended the Columbia University College of
Pharmaceutical Sciences and graduated in 1967.
Our lives seem to follow the same path for a while,
but after having families and starting our careers we grew
apart as many friends do.

Helping to bring Bernie to our hospital is not exactly cloning myself,
but it’s pretty close. I’m so happy that I get to volunteer next to a
dear friend of mine and help make our hospital a better place for
our patients and families.
Each one of us knows someone who would benefit from the
experience of being a volunteer. By talking about your great
experiences and the satisfaction you get by volunteering, each of
you could “clone” yourselves and help them make a difference,
just as you do.
After many years we decided to meet and catch up. Of course one of
the many things I spoke to him about was how rewarding it is to be a
volunteer at NSUH helping patients, families and hospital employees.
After a few cups of coffee, my friend Bernie Natt, is now a volunteer
at NSUH in the Cardiac Cath Lab. Its amazing and nice how people
come back into your life.
Not only does Bernie volunteer a few days a week in the Cath lab but
he has become a member of the Hospital Auxiliary Board, heading the
diabetic screening committee.
Diabetes Wellness Program

With the rate of diabetes almost doubling between 1990 to 2010 much research and education is
being done to prevent the onset of this disease. As technology and medicine continue to advance,
it’s important to be aware that there is some remarkable research in the area of testing in the future:

Stay healthy, try to go for regular checkups with your primary physician, exercise in a
regular manner in ways suitable to your lifestyle and eat properly. If you need help or

Junior Reflections
The dinner was a joyful occasion, somewhat tinged with sadness
as seniors said their farewells while others looked forward to
continuing their volunteer service and planning for the next
Junior Volunteer dinner in 2015.

Throughout the year our Junior Volunteers
perform numerous invaluable tasks in the
hospital. We had the opportunity to thank our
wonderful students for their contributions and
hard work at the Annual Recognition Dinner, that was
held at the Westbury Manor on May 20th. Once again,
dinner attendance broke records with close to 300 Juniors,
parents, Administration, Auxiliary, and hospital staff among
the attendees.

Recognition Dinner
Hours awards were given as well as the Auxiliary Recognition
Awards presented to the following outstanding seniors in
our program: Jerry Jose, Dynasty Maitland, and Marissa
Vaccarelli for Excellence in Service; Ashna
Joseph and Samita Nath for Exceptional
Service; and Olufemi Agoha received
the Hilary Chilton Achievement Award.
The Junior Advisory Committee presented a
check in the amount of $2,500 to the dental
clinic for a specialized laser used to assist in
various advanced and precise procedures.

held on Sunday, May 18, 2014.
Our “Valiant Volunteers” team
raised $7,237 which is the largest
amount of any North Shore LIJ
Health System team. Great Job!

On Friday, July 11, 2014 the NSUH Auxiliary’s
Stroke Club held its annual luncheon at
Jonathans Restaurant in New Hyde Park.
80 people including stroke survivors and
their caregivers, volunteers from the Stroke
Club, hospital administration and employees
celebrated the Stroke Club’s 38th anniversary.

Auxiliary Car Raffle
The Auxiliary Car Raffle drawing was held on Thursday,
August 28, 2014. We would like to thank Penn Toyota for
generously donating a brand new 2014 Toyota Corolla.
The raffle raised almost $30,000.

Auxiliary Tree of Lights
The Auxiliary of North Shore University Hospital will be sponsoring their Annual Tree of Lights Ceremony on Monday, December 1,
2014 at 4:00pm in the Monti Lobby of the Hospital. This is a unique opportunity to honor those close to you by remembering a
loved one or celebrating a birth. A light will shine on the tree in front of the Hospital’s main entrance for each individual honored or
remembered. In addition, the names of all those enrolled will be listed in the Monti Lobby. A donation of $10.00 will be accepted
for each name. All donations benefit patient programs in the hospital. For more information, please contact the Volunteer Services

Congratulations to our Auxiliary!
The Auxiliary of North Shore University Hospital received the 2014 HANYS Auxiliary of the Year
Award at a dinner that was held on Monday, October 6, 2014 during the 48th Annual Institute for
Health Care Auxiliary and Volunteer Leaders which was held at the Albany Marriot. The Healthcare
Association of New York State (HANYS) represents not-for-profit and public hospitals, nursing
homes, and home care organizations across the State. To recognize all the ways that auxiliaries
help to strengthen New York State’s healthcare system, HANYS established the Auxiliary of the
Year Award. The award is given to a HANYS’ member-affiliated auxiliary that demonstrates
outstanding achievements in community outreach and/or advocacy. The Auxiliary of the Year has
demonstrated special achievements in four areas: Hospital Services/ Contributions, Community
Outreach, Collaboration/Partnership, and Advocacy.
Shoe, Coat and Food Drives
Thank you for all those who participated in our first Shoe Drive
that was held from Monday, September 15 through
Sunday, September 28, 2014. 364 pairs of shoes were
donated to Shoes for All, whose mission is to collect, refurbish,
disinfect, and distribute shoes to those less fortunate and in
desperate need of foot wear.
The North Shore University Hospital Volunteer Services
Department held a Coat Drive from Monday, October 6
through Sunday, October 19, 2014. Coats were donated
to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island whose mission is to
make a difference in the community by giving young people a
safe place to learn and grow.
The North Shore University Hospital Volunteer Services will be
holding a Food Drive from Monday, November 3 through
Sunday, November 16, 2014. Donations can be brought to
the decorated bin located in the Tower Lobby. Donations will
go to Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief
organization. Your donation will ensure that many Long Islanders
will not go hungry.

NSUH Auxiliary Tribute Fund
Participating in the NSUH Auxiliary Tribute Fund is one way you can acknowledge a birthday, anniversary, holiday, birth, death of a
loved one, or just saying that you are thinking of them. By donating any amount from $10 and up to the Auxiliary Tribute Fund at
North Shore University Hospital, you will warm the heart of someone you care about and at the same time help our hospital grow and
enhance our services. A special letter will be sent to the person or family you choose informing them of your donation (the donation
amount will not be mentioned in the letter). The donor will also receive an acknowledgement card. Payment can be made in cash,
credit card ($25 minimum if charged), or by check made out to NSUH Auxiliary. Payments can be made in person at the Volunteer
Office which is open 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm, or by calling the Volunteer/Auxiliary office at 516-562-4947. Let someone
know you care about them today!

strengthen their community. I volunteer
at NSUH two days a week, one day
at the Monti reception desk where I

2014 Town of North Hempstead Annual Senior Citizen
Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
On Wednesday, May 21, 2014 the Town of North Hempstead held its 42nd Annual Senior
Recognition Luncheon at the Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington, NY. Over 100 people
attended including many Town and County officials. It was a very special event recognizing
volunteers who live in the Town of North Hempstead for their tireless efforts. We had the
distinguished honor to recognize our volunteers including (from left to right) Claude Sherman,
Arthur Seidman, Jan Senecal, Herb Lytton, and Lenny Stenzler. Each honoree received several
citations from various political figures and organizations within the Town of North Hempstead.
