A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR MARTIN J. WALSH On behalf of all the people who call Boston home, I’d like to welcome you to one of our city’s most treasured landmarks, Faneuil Hall. As Mayor, I have the unbelievable good fortune of looking out my office window each day over our very own Cradle of Liberty – Faneuil Hall, the place where Samuel Adams rallied for our independence and George Washington toasted our nation. This fall and winter season, I hope you enjoy all that Faneuil Hall Marketplace has to offer. From the dazzling light and sound display that begins with our annual tree lighting in November, to historical tours, kids’ events, street performers, and art exhibits, Faneuil Hall Marketplace has something for everyone. Today, Boston’s Market District is more vibrant than ever with the newly opened Boston Public Market complementing the longstanding Haymarket pushcart vendors and prepared food vendors at Quincy Market at Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Quincy Market Picture historic Faneuil Hall in 1742 when food vendors in pushcarts sold meat, fish and produce to feed the burgeoning population. The Faneuil Hall vendors were under pressure to keep up with the new residents and increased demand. In 1823, Mayor Josiah Quincy took office vowing to establish a public market, fully stocked, where both bluebloods and longshoremen could buy their food. In 1826, the market (now Quincy Market) opened to great fanfare in the spectacular Greek Revival-style structure to reflect the connection between the world’s first democracy and modern day Boston. There were vendors selling produce, dairy, and meats including turkey, chicken and beef, which are depicted on tiles that you can see at the Quincy Market Food Colonnade vendor Piccolo Panini. Carol Troxell, President of the Faneuil Hall Marketplace Merchants Association, 8 Faneuil Hall Marketplace started working at the Marketplace in the 1980’s at the former Steve’s Ice Cream, now Sprinkles Ice Cream, which she owns along with five other businesses. “I have spent more than half of my life at Faneuil Hall and I love both the City and the Marketplace. I especially love seeing all the people come from all over the world to visit. I always loved history and never get tired of thinking about how blessed I am to work in the very place known as 'the cradle of liberty'. I have a deep respect for the freedom that was founded on the grounds that we walk on every day. I find the buildings breathtaking and even though I see them day after day, I never get tired of them and I want everyone else who visits here to see them and appreciate them as well.” Quincy Market encompasses 27,000 square feet of food enterprises including bakeries, pizzerias, ice cream parlors, sandwich shops, seafood restaurants featuring world-famous clam chowder, and more. Many of the vendors at the Quincy Market Food Colonnade have been there for generations. Carol Troxell HAYMARKET Photos: Courtesy of the Boston Public Library, Leslie Jones Collection Faneuil Hall Marketplace was created for local residents but the world has embraced it and it continues to be one of the country’s most visited tourist attractions, rivaling Disneyworld for the numbers of annual visitors. It is rich in history, full of energy and considered to be the “soul of the city.” “I am so happy to see the Market District gain recognition and draw even more people to the neighborhood. We have so much to offer. We’re along Boston's Freedom Trail and across from the Seaport and the famous North End and only five minutes away from Downtown Crossing. We have it all,” said Troxell. Haymarket Take a few steps from Faneuil Hall Marketplace over to Blackstone Street and travel back in time where the Haymarket vendors have been setting up their pushcarts selling produce every Friday and Saturday since the 1800’s — truly the original “pop up” shops in the city. There you will find Otto (Ottavio) Gallotto, president of the Haymarket Pushcart Association, at his produce stand outside of Puritan Beef. Gallotto represents the 40-45 vendors in the association and he has Otto (Ottavio) Gallotto 10 Faneuil Hall Marketplace worked at the Haymarket for 30 years. Haymarket pushcart vendors have been stalwart fixtures in the ever-changing landscape of the City of Boston and they are here to stay. “This place has always been an immigrants’ market with affordable prices. From when the Irish and Italians came to Boston and even now, we have every ethnicity both buying and selling at Haymarket,” said Gallotto citing the rich diversity of the market representing Asian Americans, Latin Americans, and Middle Easterners. Gallotto, a native of Salerno Italy whose family moved to East Boston, says that there are also changes in what his customers want to buy. “Thirty years ago, you never saw a papaya or a mango. My mother would come here looking for figs and broccoli rabe. But the one item that transcends all ethnicities is spinach!” Gallotto is excited to be part of the growing Market District as visitors will come to the area to check out the new Boston Public Market and then stop by Haymarket as well. “I love the idea of the new Boston Public Market as it adds to the local flavor of the area and it will bring people down here,” he said. Just like the U.S. Postal Service, Haymarket operates through rain, sleet and snow which is comforting to know as the colder weather arrives. “Logan Airport closes in bad weather, but Haymarket stays open,” says Gallotto. “We were here every week during the infamous winter of 2015.” He says that Haymarket has a personality of its own that is unique. “People who come to Haymarket to shop really like this place. It’s unruly, but it’s a great place to get to know your customers.” Elegance is the only beauty that never fades. – Audrey Hepburn BOSTON PUBLIC MARKET Boston Public Market The new kid on the block in the Market District is the Boston Public Market, which opened its doors in August. The Boston Public Market is a permanent, year-round public market open Wednesdays through Sundays featuring fresh, locally sourced food. The market houses over 35 vendors selling locally produced items such as farmfresh produce, meat and poultry, eggs, milk and cheese, fish and shellfish, bread and baked goods, flowers, and an assortment of specialty and prepared foods. “We offer a very local experience – everything our vendors sell must either be produced or originate in New England, and nearly 100% of our vendors - farms, ranches, and small producers - are from right here in Massachusetts, with just three from Vermont and Rhode Island. Almost all of our vendors are family-owned and operated, and many of our owners are the third or fourth generation in a family of farmers. We are the only all-locally sourced, indoor, year-round market in the United States,” according to Liz Morningstar, CEO of Boston Public Market. Morningstar says that Boston Public Market is a good fit with its neighbors at Haymarket and Quincy Market as historians suggest that the area has served as a marketplace for well over 250 years. She says that they are proud to be the new member of the broader Market District. “We offer a different opportunity than our neighbors: ours Liz Morningstar 12 Faneuil Hall Marketplace is a chance to meet the farmer who grew your pumpkin, to put together a picnic lunch for the Greenway, to taste some of New England’s world-class cheese, see our demonstration hive, watch chocolate being ground, or catch a Friday night lecture and film screening in our KITCHEN.” Boston Public Market is open throughout the year – with its first fall/winter season this year. “We're excited to introduce our customers to the seasonal bounty of New England, including beautiful greens, root vegetables, squash, pumpkin, beets, and of course – fresh apples brought straight from the farm! All this is in addition to our regular dairy, meats, seafood, breads and prepared foods.” Like Quincy Market and Haymarket, Morningstar says the Boston Public Market provides visitors with a distinctly local experience. “People who visit will learn more about what our region has to offer and will have the opportunity to taste, buy and explore the bounty of New England. I’m willing to bet that long-time residents and first-time visitors alike will discover something new every time they visit!” she said. It is the mission of Chipyard founder Mark Hurwitz that you never forget that rich taste, and that you also always have a place to go and enjoy those traditional chocolate chip cookies with all of the best ingredients. Hurwitz started the Chipyard in 1976 at Newport Beach in California, simply as a way to educate his sons, Michael, 15, and Mitchell, 13, on basic principles of running a business and the responsibility that comes with it. A chance encounter with a Los Angeles Times reporter made it a bigger lesson than Mark had ever imagined. After a news story was widely circulated about Hurwitz and his sons selling homemade chocolate chip cookies out of a taco stand on the bay, demand became so high that Mark had to order large conventional ovens and floor mixers to keep up. Further growth came when Hurwitz was on a business trip in Boston and came across Faneuil Hall Marketplace, which was in the midst of revitalization. He knew instantly that his homemade chocolate chip cookies would be a hit with locals and tourists alike visiting the market, and he soon became one of the Market’s earliest vendors. Today, the Chipyard remains a popular destination for children and adults at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, for an afternoon snack or for those looking for a unique holiday gift to ship to friends and family. The Chipyard’s secret to success is no secret at all: they use only the best ingredients, from the finest butter and the right flours and sugars to the best chocolate and real vanilla extract. And they never sell a cookie that isn’t fresh out of the oven. Top-of-the-line ingredients are a constant for the Chipyard, and as a result, so too are the visitors and local folks who line up for a taste of these truly genuine chocolate chip cookies. As for the boys, Michael has gone on to become a surgeon and Mitchell is a comedy producer, writer and creator of TV’s “Arrested Development”. 20 Faneuil Hall Marketplace MEET THE MERCHANTS Adam Hirsch Make Way for Ducklings, Owner A children’s classic- especially for Boston children- is brought to life in Adam Hirsch’s Make Way for Ducklings shop located at 8 North Market Building, Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Themed around the official storybook of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the store celebrates the characters of the Make Way for Ducklings book by Robert McCloskey and other internationally-recognized authors with local Boston ties. Hirsch, who also owns the Curious George store in Harvard Square, opened Make Way for Ducklings in Faneuil Hall Marketplace in 2014. “We are a small mom-and-pop shop and knew Faneuil Hall would be the perfect setting to open our new location,” said Hirsch. “Mrs. Mallard and her ducklings have already inspired the bronze duckling statues in the Public Garden and an annual spring children’s parade, and I have an opportunity to bring these beloved characters to life in a two-floor, 5,000-square-foot store.” Hirsch’s Make Way for Ducklings shop is designed to be interactive. Children can do a “find the duck challenge” or snuggle in a reading nook featuring a little duckling nest and pillow – just like sitting in Momma Mallard’s nest! 22 Faneuil Hall Marketplace WELCOME TO BOSTON AMERICA’S WALKING CITY Within walking distance to our hotel: • Faneuil Hall Marketplace/ Quincy Market • New England Aquarium • Boston Harbor Cruises • Boston Children’s Museum • Boston’s Tea Party Museum • The Freedom Trail • Rose Kennedy Greenway Gardens and attractions • Downtown Crossing Shopping District Hilton Boston Downtown/Faneuil Hall 89 Broad St, Boston, MA 02110 617-556-0006 | hiltonbostondowntown.com MEET THE MERCHANTS Christos Kourtidis Steve’s Greek Cuisine, Owner Visitors experience the taste of authentic Greek fare when visiting Steve’s Greek Cuisine located in the Quincy Market Food Colonnade. Owner Christos Kourtidis has a special fondness for Faneuil Hall Marketplace, where he opened his third location of Steve’s Greek Cuisine more than ten years ago. Christos’ family’s connection to the Marketplace travels back to the 1970’s, when his mother and father began working in the Colonnade at a restaurant named Aegean Fare. The Kourtidis, who were immigrants from Kozani, Greece, worked in the Colonnade through the early 1980’s, until they purchased space for their own restaurant on Newbury Street in Boston. After years of working with his parents, Christos took over Steve’s Greek Cuisine at the age of 22. Within a few years, Christos opened a second location in Cambridge. In a twist of fate, Christos received an offer to buy the space where the Aegean Fare was located in the Quincy Market Food Colonnade, after a fire caused it to shut down in 2002. By 2004, Steve’s Greek Cuisine was open for business - back to where Christos’ parents’ journey at Quincy Market began decades before. Christos continues to operate his business family-style as his 13-year-old daughter often helps out on the weekends. His work “family” are his longtime employees: Manager Carlos and Prep Cook Jesus who have both been with him since he opened in 2004. Customers are never disappointed when choosing their dish at Steve’s. From chicken kabobs, to classic gyros and spinach pies, or Greek salad, everyone can enjoy a true taste of Greece. For those who leave room, Christos recommends his favorite, homemade Galactobouriko (cream custard) for dessert! 24 Faneuil Hall Marketplace Café Pulse Seasonal 26 Faneuil Hall Marketplace Quincy Market Food Colonnade 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. In Japanese, “kaizen” means good change. At the helm of the kitchen is Wagamama Senior Head Chef Barnaby Godden who hails from the UK but now is a Bostonian through and through. Godden opened Wagamama at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in 2007, its first U.S. location that has expanded to four sites in Massachusetts. Godden is thrilled to be working in the U.S. because of the quality of the food products, high standards and the fresh seafood and beef. Godden got his start in the food industry working at an Italian restaurant in a small town in England, then moved to London where he worked at Simpsons in the Strand, which once hosted a Christmas party for Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana. He wanted to be more involved in the business side of the restaurant world, so he joined Wagamama’s flagship restaurant in Covent Garden in London, which he finds closely resembles the location at Faneuil Hall Marketplace. “There’s always something happening here. Faneuil Hall Marketplace is a hive of activity with so many people visiting from all over for the history of the area. I love Boston for its historic nature and its great architecture in Beacon Hill and the Back Bay,” said Godden. Godden is proud of the culture at Wagamama and of his staff. He says that the success of the kitchen is that 90 percent is preparation and 10 percent execution. He can quickly train people who don’t have extensive culinary experience. “We are looking for people who are passionate about food and we have many longterm employees at the Faneuil Hall Marketplace location,” he said. Everything is cooked to order at Wagamama and Godden’s favorite fall/winter dish is the miso beef. “It’s spicy and unique, like something you have never had before with a lot of contrasting flavors.” He also recommends Wagamama’s soups and Surendra Curry dishes that have jalapeno peppers in the sauce to warm you up and to give you an added jolt. Godden says he has become a true Boston sports fan since moving here and has been to all of the major games. “Sports, like Faneuil Hall, is part of the fabric of Boston.” 38 Faneuil Hall Marketplace RESTAuRANTS Eat, Drink & Be Captivated Dine beneath beautiful glass canopies at one of the many restaurants, modern pubs or outdoor cafes at the Marketplace.
