Annual Report
FY 2013
A Message from the CEO
“Delta works in partnership
with business, government,
and communities in the
Great Lakes region to create
and implement innovative,
market-driven solutions
that build environmental
resilience, economic
vitality, and healthy
communities.”
FY2013 PROJECTS
Horween Leather
Urban Wood
Delta Institute explored the feasibility of various strategies to utilize
urban wood for economic development. Delta worked with
industrial wood users to understand buying behavior, learned about
the urban wood process from collection to market entry, and
advanced Tree Care Industry standards for wood harvesting. Delta
continues to look at the demand side of urban wood utilization.
Delta completed a waste audit for prominent leather
manufacturer Horween Leather Company and helped evaluate a
energy and water use.

Muskegon Phytoremediation

in Muskegon, Michigan in late 2012. To date, over 3,000 poplar
trees have been planted on contaminated sites to remediate heavy
metals and oils from soil and groundwater, as well as reduce
Challenge, which engages Chicago buildings, businesses,
and employees to improve sustainability in the workplace.
Delta provides technical assistance to participating
buildings and tenants, hosts sustainability trainings and
events, and has engaged over 250 businesses, 60 buildings,
and 900 individuals in Chicago. This program is now being
replicated in other cities across the country.

stakeholder engagement process to determine the guiding
principles for redevelopment of the now closed Fisk and Crawford
Coal Plants. Delta brokered a consensus agreement among the
community groups, the plant owner, the Aldermen, the trade union
representative, and the local electric utility, and Delta advised
Midwest Generation on marketing the sites in line with the
consensus agreement.
Rebuilding Exchange
It’s been a year of change and growth for the Rebuilding Exchange
(RX). The RX moved a half block west on Webster to expand their
order to carry the RX Made reclaimed wood bottle opener. Building
the deconstruction and reuse industry in the Chicagoland region,
the RX worked with Cook County to develop and launch the
Deconstruction, Demolition and Debris ordinance requiring 70%
recycling in demolition and 5% for reuse. Finally, Executive Director,
Elise Zelechowski, gave a TEDx Talk on Reimagining Waste and the
Rebuilding Exchange.
LOOKING FORWARD
Merchandise Mart LEED Gold
Delta’s vision is a Great Lakes region that is economically strong and
environmentally resilient. Making this vision a reality will require creativity,
broad participation in developing solutions, and new approaches to old
problems. Delta is committed to continue serving as a thought leader, a
convener, a partner, and a solutions provider for the Great Lakes region, as we
work at a systems level to: disrupt the energy status quo, catalyze ecosystem
stewardship, and transform waste from a liability to an asset.
The Chicago Merchandise Mart, long known as the world’s largest
commercial building, can now tout itself as the world’s largest LEED
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard, an

Nutrient Management
Delta received the Conservation Innovation Grant from USDA
Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and participated in
the rollout of $10 million in special funding for mitigation of
greenhouse gas emissions through conservation practices. Delta
Illinois, Michigan, and Oklahoma to develop screening criteria.
This initiative helped NRCS adopt a broader performance-based
approach to conservation and continues to build Delta’s capacity
to inform Federal conservation practices.
