Mr. and Mrs.
Chenango
County Fair 2016
The Chenango County Agricultural
Society Board of Directors is pleased to
have Syd and Pat McEvoy represent our
169th Chenango County Fair and serve as our
ambassadors particularly for the youth and 4-H
areas. They will be present for many events and we
know that you will be pleased to spend some time
with them and reminiscing about the great years spent
at our Fair.
Syd and Patti McEvoy both grew up on dairy farms
in Marathon, NY. His family owns Mac-Mara Holsteins,
and he grew up showing cattle a the Broome County Fair,
Cortland Junior Fair, and New York State Fair.
Syd received his Associate’s Degree from SUNY
Cobleskill, and his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from
Cornell University in Animal Science and Agricultural
Education. Patti earned a degree from Mohawk Community College in Advertising and Print Production.
Syd became the 4-H agent in Chenango County in June of 1980, a position he held for 18 years.
During this time, the Harry L. Case 4-H Building was built to showcase the youth exhibits during the
fair. He also worked with the Chenango County fair board and Cooperative Extension to obtain grants
and donations to construct the Follett Showring and the Margaret Johnson Milking Parlor.
Syd also began the Adopt-a-Calf Program that allowed non-farm youth to use a calf as a 4-H project
without actually owning one. This program model has now gone state-wide and these 4-Hers can even
show at the New York State Fair.
Syd got his start announcing dairy shows at the Chenango County Fair. He now serves as
announcer for the new York State Holstein Carousel held each spring in Syracuse, the Central New
York Holstein Show, the Cortland County Junior Fair, and the Tompkins County Holstein Show. He
has also judged dairy shows, both confirmation and showmanship, at the Chenango, Otsego,
Delaware, and Oswego County Fairs.
Syd and Patti are both dedicated to community service. He is a past president of the Cortland
Rotary Club, and currently serves as Chairman of the Christmas Tree Project, Pancake
Breakfast Fundraiser, and High School Scholarship Committee for the Marathon Lions’
Club. Patti is team leader for her Relay for Life team, raising money and walking to raise
awareness and find a cure for cancer.
They have two grown children, both who were active 4-Hers in Cortland and
Chenango Counties. Matt is now team leader of the machinery and field crops
team at the Cornell University Dairy Cattle Research Center in Harford, NY.
Meghan is a 7th grade English teacher and soccer/track coach at
Marathon Central School.
Syd retired in 2012 from CCE Cortland, where he was the
Executive Director for 32 years. He now keeps busy by
working full time on the family farm. Patti is
working as brand manager for Oraline, a
dental care company in
Cortland, NY.

ALYSSA TRAHAN
Multi-instrumentalist Alyssa Trahan is a
country singer-songwriter originally from
East Rochester, NY. She has written over
100 songs, plus those done with co-writers,
and continues to add to her long list of originals. Alyssa also performs on a regular basis,
well over 100 shows every year, and has
opened for acts such as Suzie Vinnick, Chris
Pureka, Wisewater, The Dady Brothers,
Ryan Broshear, Sawyer Brown, Joe Nichols
and more. In addition, Alyssa has performed
the National Anthem and/or performed at
half time at several pro-sporting events,
including for the Rochester Amerks (hockey), Buffalo 716ers (basketball), Erie
Hurricanes (basketball), and the Rochester
Red Wings (baseball). Alyssa is also a
Breedlove endorsed artist.
At the age of only 14, Alyssa began recording her original music in professional recording
studios, and in June of 2013, released her debut
album, "Hi". Soon after the release of "Hi", Alyssa
began work on her EP "Wild & Crazy", which was
released in January 2015. That same year, Alyssa
released a new single titled "I Like It" and began
work on her third studio release, an EP titled
"Daisies". "Daisies" was released in November of

2015 and has become her most successful release
to date. Every song Alyssa has released was written
on her own without the help of cowriters, an
accomplishment praised by many.
Alyssa has also released multiple professional
music videos, including for her songs "Cowboy"
and "Over You", the latter of which was featured on
13 WHAM Nightly News. She also self produced a
music video for "I Like It" the single, showcasing
not only her musical talent, but ability to direct,
film and edit a full length music video on her own.
Lastly, Alyssa's music video for her single "I Love
Your Truck" was sponsored by Hoselton Chevrolet;
a Chevy dealership in Alyssa's hometown of
Rochester, NY. It is because of these music videos,
plus several impressive covers, that Alyssa has
reached over half a million views on her YouTube
channel.
Alyssa's music has also been played on countless
radio stations (both AM and FM), including
SiriusXM The Highway, plus many online radio
stations based around the world. She has also done
interviews and in-studio performances on several
radio and talk shows and has made multiple TV
•
appearances. In addition, Alyssa has been featured
on countless music blogs and websites, including
the homepage of Big City Country (NYC), as well
as in the local paper(s) several times. Alyssa's original song "Your Only Girl" from her debut
album landed a spot in The Jersey Devil, an independent comedy film. She also wrote and recorded
an original song for Never Too Late, an independent film whose goal is to raise suicide awareness.
Currently, Alyssa lives in Nashville, TN, but
travels to Upstate NY often to perform, as she is
one of the area's most in demand performers. With
her talent and drive, she is one to watch for sure.

community lies in intelligent, faithful,
organized cooperation. It’s the goal of
the Federation to secure better
cooperation between its member

Conservation and all others
interested in conserving wildlife and
other natural resources for the future.
The Federation serves as a conduit
for information both from and to state
organizations and regulation makers
such as the NYSDEC, New York
State Conservation Council, Region 7
Conservation League, Fish & Wildlife
Management Board and
Conservation Fund Advisory Board.
The Federation also assists in the
propagation and distribution of fish
and game, and works to improve
game protection and reduce game
law violations.
The Federation also offers a
scholarship for up to $500.00.
Eligible graduating seniors must live
in or attend a school based in
Chenango County - the senior must
also be continuing their education
within the conservation area.
The Federation and its member
clubs sponsor, support and promote
various youth activities throughout
the year which range from a Spring

and just to be able to continue that at a more professional level is a very rewarding experience and
very humbling,” said Jackson. “Some of the people
who are in the audience there have watched me
grow up, so it is a very nice comfortable environment for me.”
At just 18-years old Jackson already has a very
impressive resume built up, with the hopes of
adding more in the near future.
As many know, Jackson was an impressive contestant in season 13 of American Idol,
Jackson, a recent graduate from Norwich high
school, was named Valedictorian of the class of
2016. This honor was bestowed upon her, as just
the cherry on top of the already illustrious career
including: a New York State Country Music Hall of
Fame Horizon Award, won Disney World American
Idol experience at Hollywood studios when she
was just 14. In 2011, Jackson won the Horizon
award from the New York State Country Music
Hall of Fame, when she was just 13. That same
year she was named Central New York radio group
junior Idol winner, and in 2013, Jackson became
WHWK’s hit maker challenge champion. Most

recently Jackson was entered into and was named a
finalist in the USA Songwriting Competition in the
Gospel/Inspirational category, and would go on to
win Honorable Mention overall.
With her high school career behind her, the world
stands at Kaitlyn Jackson's feet as she will, in a
short time, embark on yet another journey, college.
After traveling all over the country and auditioning for a multitude of different colleges and universities over the past few months, Jackson has officially decided to stay in New York State, where she
will attend Ithaca College in the fall of 2016.
“I am going to Ithaca College and I will be in the
BSA Acting program, which has both vocal and
dance requirements, so it was really the best of all
the worlds put together, I am excited,” said
Jackson. “It is beautiful there, I just got back from
orientation and all the people I met are fantastic so
I am super excited. I auditioned for like 14 different schools, and it was crazy. Very eye opening for
me, but it took up 160 percent of my time.”
Despite the drain on Jackson's time, she still has
found time to participate in Amber Perkins school
of the arts where she traveled to Florida to perform

“We did Romeo and Juliet, so we told the whole
story, the dance was like seven minutes long. I
played Juliet so that was so incredible, it was a
very emotional performance,” said Jackson.
Now that a Valedictorian has been named, a college has been picked, and a national title has been
won, Kaitlyn Jackson will be excitedly getting back
to her roots right here in Chenango County when
she performs with her band at the upcoming
Chenango County Fair.
This year the band will be composed of John
Jackson on backup vocals, Brenna Swanger on
rhythm and lead guitar, Ross Rogers on drums, and
Ron Richards on base guitar, while Kaitlyn sings.
Kaitlyn shared her pre-performance ritual, something she seems to have added onto some since last
year. During an interview with The Evening Sun in
2015, Jackson shared that she sometimes eats
Mustard before she sings to clean her vocal chords,
allowing her to have a raw, natural feel.

COLEMAN BROTHERS SHOWS
BRINGS LIFE TO THE MIDWAY

Barring a brief stint in the late 60s and
early 70s, Colman Brothers Shows Inc.
had always been the go-to to bring life to
the midway at the Chenango County Fair.
Now in its 100th year in the carnival
business, Coleman Brothers Shows will
return to the Chenango County
Fairgrounds for yet another round of family friendly rides, games and entertainment.
Started as a one-man show in 1926,
Coleman Brothers Shows has since taken
off to include more than 30 rides, games and other
concessions operated with the help of more than 50
workers during the busy season. It all began when
Richard Coleman purchased a used merry-go-round
for $250 and charged for rides where it was set up
near the Portland Bridge. Word spread about the
ride, as did Coleman’s ambitions. He started booking shows in different towns and, with help from

Coleman’s sons got in the carnival business as well.
Today, the operation is run by Bob Coleman, one
of Richard’s sons, and his wife, Rachel.
According to the Coleman Brothers website, the
traveling carnival is always seeking new attractions
to keep the excitement thriving. Before the carnival

“They have been an important part of the fair for
many years,” said Chenango County Fair
Association President Mary Weidman. “The midway is always what draws the most attention with
the lights and the sounds, and the games and rides.
It’s what a lot of people look for at the fair.”
As the Fair Association gets ready to kick off the
169th annual Chenango County Fair, Weidman said
the midway will offer the same exciting appeal as
always... and then some.
“The Coleman Brothers have a couple new rides
this year,” she added. “They put a lot of time and
effort into making sure equipment is maintained, an
lights are working, and everything is ready.”

Making sure our employees and customers are safe is our
top priority. And what better way to communicate the

of the nice things about having an agricultural fair:
We get to do different things that use agriculture to
attract people.”
Of course, that’s not all the fair has to offer in the
way of equestrian entertainment. On Tuesday,
opening day of the fair, harness racing returns to
the Chenango County track, giving spectators a
look at some of the best racers in the state.
“We’re fortunate to have one of the best tracks in
the fair racing circuit,” said Lawrence, citing near
record-breaking times that have been set at the
Norwich track over the years. “We’ve seen a lot of
fast times at the track, and it’s because we’re able
to maintain it. It gets damaged quickly because of
different events and because of flooding in the
spring, so it takes almost a full year to keep preparing that track; but it pays off.”
If racing isn’t your thing, then here’s something
else to pique your interest: Roman Riding.
Roman Riding is standing on two horses, one foot
on each horse. Throughout the fair, JD Winslow
equestrian entertainment will feature a Roman
Rider traveling the fairgrounds and bringing a
whole new sense of wonderment to a longlasting
equestrian sport.
As always, fair goers can also pay a visit to the
stables of the Chenango County fairgrounds.

The group performs shows at County Fairs, Fire
Department Carnivals, and various different
fundraisers. They offer 22 different classes of garden tractor pulls, ranging from eight horsepower or
less, all the way up to four-cylinder modified garden tractors.
For those who don’t know, Garden Tractor pulls
involve using modified garden tractors to pull a
heavy sled along a 35 foot wide, 100 meter (330
foot) long track, with the winner being the tractor
or truck that pulls the sled the farthest.
All tractors in their respective classes pull a set
weight in the sled. When a tractor or truck gets to
the end of the track, this is known as a "full pull".
When more than one tractor or truck completes a
"full pull", more weight is added to the sled, and
those competitors compete in a pull-off.
The winner is the one who can pull the sled the
longest length of the track.
The sleds weigh approximately 6,000 or more
pounds. The speed at which the weighted box
moves up the sled, and the gearing applied, both
control the difficulty of the pull. The sled is set and
controlled by the sled master.

FAIR FOOD: BETTER THAN FAIR
As August rolls around the corner, the Chenango
County Fair follows. People from all over the state
flock to see certain attractions like the petting zoo,
demolition derby, live entertainment, fireworks, and
last but certainly not least: the food.
It goes without saying that food vendors are a staple at the Chenango County fair, with vendors from
near and far showcasing their delicious treats. All
week long, the fair food vendors will be set up and
ready to please your taste buds.
Aside from scrumptious funnel cakes, candy
apples, homemade taffy, and fried you-name-its,
local vendors from Norwich and the Chenango
County area are also an instrumental part of the
food culture at the fair.
Nina’s, a hometown favorite, will be back at the

CHENANGO COUNTY FAIR
EXHIBITION HALL
Great work

At Snyder Communications we are extremely proud of our
staff. Not only do they perform excellent work, they grace
our building with style, laughter, and a true caring for our
customers and each other.
We are an excellent, fun place to work and are always
looking for individuals who possess a great attitude and
positive work habits, so keep us in mind when you are
looking for a challenging work opportunity. Who knows, the
next person we hire could be you.
That’s how we do it.
Together, we each do our best so we can deliver our best to
you. We pride ourselves on giving our customers the attention
and service they need in today’s competitive marketplace.
Whether it’s one of the seven editions of the Pennysaver, My
Shopper, The Evening Sun, The Gazette, Circulars Unlimited,
New Media Retailer, Swelby or Sun Printing, the same
dedication and commitment to service, quality and value is
evident throughout.
That’s teamwork... working for you!
Anyone who’s walked a lap at the Chenango
County Fair has seen the different rides, food vendors, game booths, and animals. But tucked away
inside the exhibition hall is a part of the fair that
many people over look.
The exhibition area at the Chenango County Fair
showcases some of the most interesting products of
the county. Some commercial businesses will be set
up on the east side of the exhibition hall to sell and
advertise their products. On the west side of the
exhibition hall is one of the more exciting parts of
the fair: the exhibit entries. People from around the
county enter their maple syrup, farm-crops, forest
crops, hay, wheat, oats, corn, and almost any other
kinds of vegetable to be spectated and judged. “We
want to focus on the fact that the County Fair is
agriculturally based,” said exhibition Hall volunteer
Karen Edwards. “There will be just about any kind
of vegetable that you can think of available for
judging.” While at the Chenango County Fair this
year, don’t overlook the exhibition hall where some
of the county’s finest commodities are on display.
NYSEG: HIGHLIGHTING SAFETY AT
THE FAIR
Show will be August 9th at 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m.
and 7:30 p.m. Behind the Demolition Derby stands
by the back gate at Maydole Street
Making sure their customers are safe is NYSEG’s
top priority. And what better way to communicate
the importance of taking personal responsibility for
safety than with a powerful live-line demonstration?
Under normal operating conditions, NYSEG’s
electricity delivery system is extremely safe.
However, dangerous conditions can result when a

storm or motor vehicle accident damages that system. NYSEG’s expert line mechanics will become
teachers at the fair, using a replica of an electricity
delivery system to show how electricity can travel
when the delivery system is damaged, and most
importantly how to stay out of its way.
NYSEG, a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, serves
881,000 electricity customers and 263,000 natural
gas customers across more than 40% of upstate
New York. Iberdrola USA, which is a subsidiary of

service and delivery company with nearly 3 million
customers in upstate New York and New England.
They are a team of dedicated individuals working
as one to deliver value to their customers, employees, and shareholders. By providing outstanding
customer service and exceptional reliability while
still holding safety and the environment in the
highest regard, NYSEG aspires to be a world-class

that are grown in Chenango County that are available directly from farm stands as produce, and also
at certain restaurants as finished meals or wines.
Taste of Chenango will consist of two factions; in
one section there will be a dozen or so vendors
with displays, demonstrations, and even tastings of
their delicious products that are grown right here in
Chenango County. In addition to the displays there
will also be two creation-stations, sponsored by
Chobani, that will allow people to put together a
meal or product themselves. This may include
things like making baklava, putting together a
yogurt mix, or even learning firsthand how to cook
with wine.
Don’t miss out on the Taste of Chenango displays

flowers for judging. The theme for this year’s show
is “Victorian” in celebration of the history of
Chenango County and the many Victorian inspired
homes that remain in the area today.
The flower shower is divided into two sections:
horticulture and design. The horticulture section
includes garden-style plants to be judged and properly named by experts in attendance at the show.
The design section, which is run by Mary Musson,
consists of many different Victorian-inspired categories this year where people can submit their own
creations. Be sure to check out the flower show at

back of the exhibition hall.
AMERICAN FIREWORKS
American Fireworks Manufacturing Company Inc.
began its roots in the United States when Vincenzo
Speciale emmigrated from Palermo, Sicily leaving
behind two generations of Master Pyrotechnicians.
When Vincenzo arrived in the U.S., he started The
Italian American Fireworks Company. With the
help of his son Joseph they built up the business as
one of New York State's leaders in display fire-
works. Joseph became a Master Pyrotechnician
under his father's guidance. Vincenzo died in 1936
leaving Joseph in charge of the growing company.
With the outbreak of World War II, the fireworks
display business came to an abrupt halt. Joseph
used his pyrotechnic knowledge to manufacture
grenades to help the war effort. After the war, fireworks once again thrived. Joseph shortened the
company name to the American Fireworks Mfg.
Co. Business was booming for the new American
Fireworks.
The whole family was involved in the manufacturing processes of making enough fireworks for the
many displays and customers. After dinner and the
dishes were done, the kitchen table was used to roll
the paper cases and tubes that would be taken up to
the shop on Dutch Hill Road. These tubes and
cases would be filled with the secret ingredients to
make them into Fireworks. (The Dutch Hill Road
Facility in Frankfort N.Y. is still in use today).
American Fireworks Mfg. Co. was now considered the largest manufacturer of display Fireworks
in New York State. With the continued growth of
both the manufacturing and display business the

company Incorporated in 1986. The company
entered the 1990s with steady growth, more leadership help was needed. Vincent hired Kevin
Fritschler, a seasoned pyrotechnician, to help oversee the company's operations. Vincent taught Kevin
all aspects of the business as he had learned from
his father. Under Vincent's guidance and supervision, Kevin also became a Master Pyrotechnician.
With the constant growth in the displays, American
Fireworks has been forced to outsource much of its
manufacturing today. Our products are still made
with the same high quality old world traditions as
always.
Many products still use the secret formulas
brought over with Vincenzo Speciale from
Palermo, Sicily in a little black book. Their specialty line of manufactured fireworks products are still
made in rural upstate New York. Many high volume fireworks items are manufactured in China,
Spain and Japan. Some of these items are made at a
factory in China that works exclusively with the
American Fireworks Mfg. Co. Inc.
Where ever the products are made, Vincent and
Kevin constantly check on production to ensure the
