This week’s Advertiser of the Week is: Mountainview House A Place for Seniors to Thrive 360-834-3988 2 From the Desk of Fr. Gary We gather today and light the fourth candle on our Advent Wreath. This means Christmas is only a few days away. During these days of preparation we have heard the call to be awake and ready for the Lord’s coming. St. Vincent de Paul Society is a concrete expression of our care for those in need this Christmas. On Thursday night and Friday morning of this coming week we will gather with family and friends to celebrate our Christmas liturgies. All of our preparation has led to this. What a joy it will be to celebrate these Masses, where we once again welcome the Savior into our hearts, into our lives and into our world. In today’s beautiful passage from Luke’s Gospel, Mary makes haste to share her joy with Elizabeth. As Mary arrives we hear the greeting that echoes down to our very day in our most beloved prayer, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, our celebrations take on a particular focus of the mercy of God. Our God, creator of the universe, has visited us for one reason - love. St. John tells us that God is love. It is that love, no matter what our journey has been, no matter how well we have prepared, no matter how far we may have wandered, it is that merciful love that visits us. This is where our Advent journey has led us. Just like Mary and Elizabeth, we have been called to create a space, a place for the Savior to enter in once again. Advent calls us, through prayer and action, to prepare well for the Lord’s coming. This preparation is an act of hospitality for our God who came among us long ago and comes among us again in the power of his Holy Spirit. That is also true of those we will worship with this week. May those who join us, who perhaps have been away, or only come on Christmas and Easter, or who may be celebrating Christmas alone, or for the first time after the death of a loved one, or the end of a relationship - may all of these brothers and sisters experience the welcoming presence of God through us. This could be the best gift we give this year. For many of us, this Advent has also been filled with practical preparation for our celebrations. Perhaps we are preparing to welcome family and friends to our home. Perhaps we are preparing to journey to be with loved ones who are looking forward to welcoming us. Happy Fourth Sunday of Advent! For most of us, Advent has also been spent buying gifts for those we love as well as for those in need. Our gifts for our family and friends are an expression of our love - a small token of the love and affection that is deep in our hearts. Our gifts to our brothers and sisters through our Giving Tree and the ministry of the God Bless, Fr. Gary Lazzeroni The Jubilee Year of Mercy Embrace Opportunities of Mercy for Ourselves This is the time to experience the loving mercy of Jesus in the Sacrament of Penance. For those that have been going to confession, this could be the year to establish more frequent and regular confession times and perhaps finding a spiritual director. Receiving Jesus in the Eucharist more frequently is another area to behold the face of Jesus and His mercy. Embrace the opportunities of special indulgences during this Jubilee Year. Be a pilgrim during this year of Mercy to churches with Holy Doors, such as St. James Cathedral in Seattle and the Proto-Cathedral of St. James the Greater in Vancouver. Be a Missionary of Mercy to Others Brush up on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and put them to practice in your life. "At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives." Let others know by our actions and words of the merciful love of Jesus. As we move forward through the Year of Mercy, we will explore ways to personalize each of the spiritual works. December 8, 2015—November 20, 2016 This Jubilee Year is the gift of an entire year to recognize, appreciate, and practice mercy, as well as share the knowledge of His Mercy with others. So, what can we do to participate in the Jubilee Year of Mercy? Here are a few things to try: Pray for a more peaceful and loving world. Pope Francis' Prayer for the Jubilee Year of Mercy is a beautiful prayer that you can pray daily. This was printed in the December 6 bulletin and is also available at the Vatican website, www.im.va/content/gdm/en/giubileo/ preghiera.html. Read and contemplate about God's mercy. We can read passages from the Bible that depict God's mercy, such as the mercy of the Father in the Old Testament, the Psalms of Mercy, the life of Christ, and the Parables of Mercy. We can also read from the Fathers of the Church and lives of the Saints that illustrate and elaborate God's mercy in the life of the Church. And, of course, Misericordiae Vultus, Pope Francis’ Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, is worthy of contemplation. Dwell on Images of Mercy As Pope Francis says, "Jesus Christ is the face of the Father's mercy" and He has many depictions in art and scripture. The Gospels are also a great source of other ways Jesus illustrated mercy, such as the Good Shepherd or Good Samaritan or Loving Father. This week, as we celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, let us resolve to make 2016 a year of mercy in our lives, opening ourselves to more love, kindness, forgiveness and generosity. 3 Fr. Please RSVP so we can make adequate plans for lunch. E-mail Valerie Hepburn at candc24@q.com or Steve Brown at steveb@stjoevan.org. COFFEE CART? GIVE US YOUR FEEDBACK! During the Sundays of January, join us for a special espresso drink and/or a treat for a nominal price. This is an effort to research a potential coffee cart for after Mass hospitality. Our Thanksgiving food drive was an outstanding success! The members of Our Lady of Lourdes, Holy Redeemer, The Proto-Cathedral of St. James the Greater and St. Joseph parishes donated over 20,000 pounds of food to help our SW Washington neighbors stretch their food budget.
