Church Revitalization — Church Assistance
Church Assistance
The model of the KCAB Church Assistance ministry
occurred one week this year when 5 churches
networked together to serve each other and the Baptist
Center. Each church used their unique gifts and
resources to accomplish really BIG tasks as they joined
together to serve on God’s Mission in our Association.
Shandon Baptist
repaired flooring structure
and installed new floors in
the kitchen of Victory
Baptist Knoxville.
Glenwood Baptist Knoxville
provided lunches for
Shandon Baptist mission team.
Sharon Baptist Knoxville pr ovided
dinners for Shandon Baptist during
their Project Knox 316 service.
When an unexpected need for a
bobcat was expressed at dinner one
night, one of the members was able
to meet that need to help the
Shandon gr oup complete the job at
Western Heights Baptist Center.
Shandon Baptist Church of
Columbia SC came to Knoxville to
serve through Project Knox 316.
This large group served Victory
Baptist, Vestal Baptist and Western
Heights Baptist Center with
construction and repair projects.
As they ministered there, two of our
churches also served their needs.
What a great picture of our network!
Western Heights Baptist Center needed a
parking pad constructed. Shandon Baptist
provided the labor, Vestal Baptist provided the
gravel and Sharon Baptist provided the bobcat.
Shandon Baptist
repaired flood damage
and rebuilt a stairwell for
Vestal Baptist Knoxville
Then Vestal Baptist was
able to get a load of
gravel donated to the
Western Heights pr oject
that Shandon Baptist was
providing the labor to
build.

Director of Missions
Dictionaries generally define “Network” as a group of people or organizations that are closely
connected and that work with each other. Inherent in the meaning of “ Network” are two essential
principles: Relationships (closely connected); and Purpose (work with each other).
The Knox County Association of Baptists is a network of Baptist churches on God’s mission.
The essential principles of relationships and purpose form the foundation of this network in understanding who we are (ekklesia
– the church) and why we are here (missio Dei – God’s mission). As a network of Baptist churches on God’s mission, we are
connected with one another by a spirit of unity and a unity of purpose.
The KCAB Church Assistance and Relations Team has developed intentional strategies to help build a strong network of vibrant
churches on God’s mission:
 Assist churches through Learning Communities, Coaching, and Contextualized Training Assistance
 Assist churches in developing partnerships that address specific needs as well as partnerships that assist in church
revitalization
 Assist in nurturing Pastor Relationships
 Assist in identifying and providing resources for practical needs related to various church functions and operation
On the front of this issue of The Reminder, you will see a beautiful example of Relationships and Purpose coming together in the
strength of the network. Notice how churches came together – serving one another and meeting one another’s needs – to be
united in God’s mission. The value of being part of the network is evident when churches are closely connected in a spirit of
unity and are working together in a unity of purpose.
Relationships and Purpose: This is what strengthens our network of Baptist churches in Knox County to be
Ekklesia-Missio Dei: the church on God’s mission!
Grace and Peace!

Pastors, watch for your invitation to this special event.
Church Revitalization — Church Assistance
According to Thom Rainer, 90% of churches are either in decline or growing at a pace slower than their community. In the midst of this
extreme challenge lies a great opportunity. Ed Stetzer point out that Church revitalization is an opportunity to lead God’s people to a
renewed focus on God’s mission. Such an endeavor will undoubtedly change lives, communities, and have a gospel impact on generations
to come.
Among the many models of church revitalization, three typically stand out as the most common:
Merger or Acquisitional Revitalization: This approach is both radical and largely successful. Another church merges with or acquires
the existing church in need of revitalization. Sometimes the doors of the existing church are closed for a season. The church then
reopens, possibly with a new name, but definitely with new leaders.
Partnership Revitalization: This approach is when a church comes alongside the church in need of revitalization. The partnership may
include shared leadership, finances, training, mentoring, and other resources that help bring about the necessary changes for
revitalization.
Covenantal Revitalization: In this approach, the existing church, led by an objective person (often an outsider), agrees to make some
significant changes. The leadership and the congregation agree to a process of examining Scripture, spiritual renewal, studying the
congregation and the community, and developing a strategy that moves the church toward revitalization.
The Church Assistance Team is ready to assist churches in discovering the revitalization approach that is best for their context and situation.
Give us a call and let’s see how a specific approach to revitalization might be the catalyst for your church to be on God’s mission!
We ask for your prayers
for our churches who are seeking a pastor.

Protecting your Ministry
Since the Supreme Court marriage ruling June 30th, our
office has received numerous calls requesting guidance for
churches in response to that legal change. We have
compiled several items that may help your church with
decisions going forward. The Southern Baptist Convention
(ERLC) released a legal guide last month for churches who
seek to protect themselves from discrimination lawsuits by
providing templates for things like membership policies,
facility use, and employment criteria. You can call or email
our office, and we will send you the PDF of this 44 page
guide, as well as several other helpful links and
informational guides that we think will be beneficial to your
leadership for planning and preparation for legal protection.

Disaster Relief assists Washington Pike Baptist Church
The KCAB Disaster Relief Director serves on our Church Assistance Team. One of
the ministry opportunities for the DR crews is to assist our churches with their skills
and equipment resources for special projects. Recently the DR crew used the KCAB
bucket truck to repair a church steeple. Last month the team built a specially
designed wheelchair ramp for Washington Pike Baptist. Their expertise was a
blessing to the church to create a one of a kind ramp to serve their members.
