J-Term is brand new this year at
Mount Vernon High School. The high
school offered 13 unique class options
for students from January 4 through
January 19. Students began their
second semester classes on January 21.
Classes offered this year were
Health 9, Recent US History, Are You
Game?, Cold War through James Bond,
Consumer Automotive, Criminal Minds/
Short Film Making, Exercise Science/
Science of Sports, Learning on a Dime,
Musical Theatre, Outdoor Pursuits/JTerm Documentary, Popular Science/
Drones/Engineering, Social Justice and
the Spanish Trip. Each of the classes
were co-taught and provided students
an opportunity to interact with teachers
that they may not otherwise have as an
instructor.

The 8th grade team took advantage of the J-Term schedule as an opportunity to complete two interdisciplinary units with students. Students spent five days
working on one project, then five days working on the next. Descriptions of these units are as follows:
Language Arts and Science: Students studied wind turbines, learning basics about electricity and circuits and reading excerpts from William Kamkwamba's memoir
“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind”. Students also visited Kirkwood Community College to tour their wind turbine program, and worked to build small wind turbine
blade assemblies of their own. Finally, students researched wind energy and participated in debates about its viability as a future energy source.
Math and Social Studies: Students

planned a Modern-Day Oregon Trail. The purpose of the activity was for students to plan out a road trip from a major city in the
United States to Oregon. Along the way, the students planned visits to historic sites, kept a budget of expenses on a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, and mapped out their
route for the trip on an online mapping site called "Scribble Maps." In addition, students constructed a to-scale
model of one of the historic sites they visited out of recycled materials.

dreams. By setting up a scholarship

through the Foundation, YOU CAN
MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
Establishing a scholarship is an exceptional way
to honor an important person or life event while
supporting educational opportunities for graduating
students. Scholarships can be established for any
educational pursuit – college, vocational or technical
training. Funds are held in an endowed scholarship
account to be used specifically for the scholarship as
determined by the donor/donors. Funds can be set up
as a memorial, as an honorarium of a special person,
as a means to celebrate a special life event, or as an
opportunity to bring donors together for a common
goal of providing education.
Scholarships can be for a single graduation
year or for a series of years. Donors can provide the
high school principal and the scholarship selection
committee with a series of criteria for the graduate
receiving the scholarship to meet. As donor, your
name will be listed in the graduation program and
in other Foundation materials in recognition of the
generous gift of providing a graduate with financial
assistance to achieve their next level of education.
Donations to the Mount Vernon Community
School District Foundation are tax deductible, and
can be made in any form; such as cash, securities, life
insurance, or bequests.

PROJECT: LET’S WORK!
Eighth grade student Reilly Gross has come
up with a great way to promote volunteerism and
community service! She has developed a new program
for Mount Vernon middle school students called,
"Project: Let's Work!". This program challenges
student to reach a goal of 25 hours or more each year
of community service. Students that reach this goal,
will be recognized at the MVMS End of the Year Talent
Show.
Students may pick up "Project Let’s Work!"
Volunteer Forms in the office, Mrs. Tischer’s room, or
find them on the website.

MS BAND SOLO FESTIVAL
The middle school band students are currently
preparing their solos for the annual Solo Festival. Solo
Festival will be held on Friday, February 5 from 4-8 pm
this year.
All middle school band students select a solo
to perform at the event. Students get to work with
a piano accompanist and are scored by judges. The
main goal of Solo Festival is for each student to learn
an entire piece of music, performed to the highest
standards of technique and musicality. More than 120
students will participate, with four judges, several
accompanists, and a host of parent and student
volunteers making it all run.
Please join us for a great night of music to support
these hard working students!
MVFAA HIGHLIGHTS
• Elementary Chorus Club has
started and a March 8 concert is
planned.
• Opera Iowa for the elementary
during the day of Feb. 23rd. That
evening is “Cinderella”, sponsored
by MVFAA.
• MS art is gearing up to paint
a couple of wall murals. One is
for One Mission, a downtown
business. The other is music mural for the hallway by
the auditorium and music rooms. Mr. Benesh will use
$1,000 provided by MVFAA to fund both projects.
• MS Band is trying a Pep Band Invitational. All middle
school band students are invited to join the high
school pep band at the basketball game. We’ll buddy
up and do a few tunes together between the JV and
Varsity girls’ games.
• Four judges and 4 or 5 accompanists will be funded
by MVFAA for the middle school solo festival.
• MVFAA funded registration fees for those students
selected for the Marion Junior Honor Band and Young
Musicians Honor Band.
• Students who went to NEIBA honor band in
December had MV Alum Bill Pringle as guest
conductor.
• A group of over 20 middle school students played
drums for the December board meeting.
• Kristin Anderson and Kristi Keast used MV
Foundation Grant money to purchase 6 Remo tubanos.
• 5th grade musical is under way and going well.
Students will perform music with an open violin case
for donations
• Kai Walberg was selected as lead Tenor Sax in the
NEIBA Honor Band.
• Four students attending ISU Honor band: Mikayla
Flockhart, Nicole Margheim, Theresa Gruber-Miller,
and Nathaniel Barnhart will attend ISU Honor Band on
February 5 and 6.
• Jenna Brannaman was selected to participate in the
2016 Wartburg Honor Band.
• Chicago parade meeting was held to go over
approximate cost. Band will ask MVFAA for donation
toward the cost of the trip.
• $500 donation received in December from the U of I
Credit Union toward the Chicago parade trip.
• Mr. Jerry Creger will be the guest conductor at the
2016 Festival of Bands. Mr. Creger recently retired
from Northeast Community School District. He
previously taught at East Central Community Schools
and retired after 35 years in public education.
• Proposals will need to be gathered for construction
of the inside of the band trailer.
• Fabulous turnout for the December band concert.
Special thank yous to Denise Brannaman and Jackie
Opperman for help with decorations.
• We had a great December of caroling. Thirty three
students carolled around town.
• We served 5 families this year through the school
program for families in need.
• Bryce Cox, Ethan Wenz, Alex Abresch, Jenna
Reimann, and Stacey Jaeger attended the Dorian
Honor choir.
• Northeast Iowa String Teachers Honor Orchestra
was attended by Zach Vig, Shianne Sneed, Emma Ault,

MARION JUNIOR HONOR BAND
The Marion Junior Honor Band was held Saturday, January 16 at Vernon Middle
School in Marion. This is the oldest continuous running honor band of its kind
in the state. Students were nominated by their band instructor Elise Rodenberg,
and selected by the honor band committee. They joined with students from all of
Eastern Iowa to rehearse for the day, under the baton of guest conductors Brian
Enabnit and Dan Norman of the
Dubuque Community School
District, and Dr. Glenn Pohland
of Loras College. The day ended
with two concerts, and included
the UNI Reed Trio.

MS SPELLING BEE
The Middle School Spelling Bee was held Friday, January 8 in the library.
Classroom spelling bees were held previously at each grade level to determine the
spellers who would compete in the school bee. The contestants were as follows:

WE MINI DANCE MARATHON
Washington Elementary hosted a Mini
Dance Marathon to benefit the University
of Iowa Children's Hospital on December
18, 2015. The event was organized by fourth
grade students in Character Council. All
proceeds from the Mini Dance Marathon
benefit children and families diagnosed with
pediatric cancer.

College donated time and talents to make the event a
success. WETAP got involved by donating glow sticks,
refreshments and gift cards.
Students and families raised $3, 500!! Donations
were collected in several ways. A GoFundMe page was
established for online donations. A wishing wall was
created at the elementary where students purchased a
star for $1, decorated the star and added it to the wall.
And finally, students collected spare change from family
and friends. Congratulations on a great Mini Dance
Marathon!

MS SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM PLACES 6TH
FOOTBALL TRIVIA NIGHT
FUNDRAISER
A fundraiser will be held to benefit the Mount Vernon Football
Program involving a trivia contest, raffles and a live auction.
WHEN: Saturday, March 19, 2016 - Social at
5:30 pm with Dinner to follow at 6:15 pm
WHERE: Regal Crown Reception Hall in
Lisbon
WHO: This is an adults-only event to raise
money for the needs of the Mount Vernon
Football Program.
Tickets are $25 per person and are available
at MV Bank & Trust, Scarlett Boutique, The
Skillet and One Mission. Individuals will
also be selling tickets.
The evening will start with social time,
dinner and a highlight video of the 2015
season.
Trivia contests will take place after the
dinner and will consist of teams of no more
than 4 people. 5 rounds of trivia with 10
questions in each round will be played. A
prize will be given to the winning team.
Raffles will be held in between rounds of trivia. Raffle items will be
donated by local businesses, local groups or individual people.
A live auction will take place before the final round of trivia.

The Middle School Science Olympiad team
competed in the Rockford Christian Invitational
on Saturday, January 9. The tournament was very
competitive with some of the top teams in Illinois
and the nation competing. The Mount Vernon team
placed 6th.

YOUNG MUSICIANS HONOR BAND
The Young Musicians Honor Band will be held Saturday, February 20 at College
Community Schools in Cedar Rapids. This honor band was created specifically for
students in their first or second years of playing a band instrument. Students were
nominated by their band instructor Elise Rodenberg, and selected by the honor
band committee. They will join with students from all of Eastern Iowa to rehearse
for the day, under the
baton of guest conductors

The day culminates in a
concert held in the Prairie
Performing Arts Center

MV ARCHERY CLUB
SEES SUCCESS IN EARLY
TOURNAMENTS
The weather held out for the Mount Vernon
Middle School and once again there was much fun
to be had by all on the annual ski trip held on Friday,
January 15. The ski trip was very well attended
with 525+ middle school students, staff, and their
families and friends. Eight charter buses were
boarded in the morning and headed to Chestnut
Mountain in Galena, IL for a day of skiing fun. Lift tickets, ski equipment and lessons
were provided on arrival and then it was off to the slopes for a day of fun with
friends, family and our middle school staff. For those
students who had never skied before, it was an especially
exciting day.
This trip provides
an opportunity for
everyone involved
to interact with one
another outside of
the classroom. It
is a highlight of the
school year for many while supporting our
building goal of cultivating and strengthening
relationships within our school and community.
We are especially grateful for the financial donations we received from various
sources. These donations were used to support any middle school student that
needed assistance to attend. As always, we
are incredibly grateful for the tremendous
support we receive
for this long standing

Mount Vernon High School senior,
Mallory Scienszinski knows that she’s
interested in a career in business or math
so she was happy to combine the two
for her Rockwell Collins internship in
Accounting. She’s been impressed with
the scope of Rockwell and has been proud
that her communication skills improved
since starting work there. “I’ve gotten
much more comfortable asking questions and am building my work skills.” Her
host, Kim Coe, agrees with Mallory. Kim loves the program and the quality of
applicants WLC has sent to Rockwell. Kim says “If you’re on the fence about a
career with numbers, this is a great experience.”

The Mount Vernon Archery Club has competed
at two tournaments so far. The first was the Center
Point-Urbana (CPU) Tournament held on December 21
at Hawkeye Downs. Sixteen schools participated and Mount Vernon walked
away with two team awards and one new
club record. Both the Elementary School
and the High School teams placed first. The
Elementary School team scored 2933 led by
Elizabeth Barns in second place for the girls,
and for the boys, Walker Holmes Biden in
fifth place and Ben Merlak in second place.
The Middle School scored 3068, led by Mya
Reyhons, who placed third, Emily Benesh,
and Steven Wolfe. The team placed fifth. The
High School team scored 3315 to finish in first
place. Emily Friedman led the girls, finishing in third,
while Nick Flynn finished in fourth for the boys and
Collin Hallier finished in second place. Hallier (pictured
at right) set a new club record for high school boys by
shooting 292.
CPU also hosted a challenge shoot with 3D targets.
Marin Denes and Natalie Nederhiser placed first and
second, respectively in the Girls Elementary School
division and Benny Pospisil shot for third place in the
boys division. In the Middle School division, the girls

On January 9, Mount Vernon hosted a tournament
for ten schools. At home, the Mustangs shot for first place trophies in all three
divisions. The elementary school scored 2944, the middle school scored 3225,
and the high school scored 3256. The Middle School team also placed first in
the 3D Challenge tournament.
At the elementary school division, Naomi
Flynn and Elizabeth Barns led the girls in fifth place
and third place. For the boys, Jacob Cannon placed
sixth, Brad Vislisel was in fifth place, Walker Holmes
Bilden shot for third, and Ben Merlak shot first place
with a score of 26. Anna Nydegger, Mae Own,
Karlyn Connolly, and Mya Reyhons led the girls,
placing fifth, fourth, second, and first. Mya Reyhons
first place score was 286. Leading the boys were Eli
Webster in sixth place, Aden Grudzinski in third, and
Logan Kelly in first place with a 288. In high school,
Emily Friedman led the girls and placed second.
Connor Myers placed sixth for the boys, Collin
Hallier placed third, and Nick Flynn placed first with
a score of 289.

fourth. For the boys, Jacob Cannon placed first, Ryder Bunch placed second,
Asher Eichhorn finished fifth, and Ranger Hannah shot for sixth. At the Middle
School level, Mya Reyhons led the girls in first, Ellie Barkalow placed fourth, and
Quinlan Denes shot for sixth place. On the boys team, Aden Grudzinski shot
for fifth place. For the High School division, Rachel Lochner shot for sixth place,
Connor Myers was in first, Nick Flynn placed second, Brandon Lochner finished
in third, and Collin Hallier finished in fifth place.
Mount Vernon traveled to Charitan on January 16, Eldon on January 23,
and will travel to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on February 6.
HS STUDENTS PLACE 2ND AT WAMAC LARGE GROUP CONTEST
Thirty-six Mount Vernon High School students traveled to Beckman Catholic High School to compete in the WAMAC Large Group Speech Contest. All students committed
a great deal of time and energy to their performances, and all received excellent feedback that will be used to prepare for District Speech. The District Speech contest was
held on January 23 in Monticello. Final results for Districts was not availble at the time of print. This year, students were fortunate to have alumnus Grant Freeman write and
coach the choral reading piece and the readers theatre piece.
Speech contest is broken down into centers with two judges per center. Each group earned two rankings and then each group was given a ranking for the center that
they performed in. Below is a list of the category, title, performers names, judges results and center results for those groups earning I, II or III ratings.

Mini Dance Marathon
- Huge success and very well attended. Raised $3,500 for the U of
I Children’s Hospital.
- Character Council requested $200 for cookies and $100 for gift
cards from WETAP. Just over $200 was spent last month.
- This was meant to be a family event. Some parents dropped
their children off for the two hours.
Family Fun Night
- Scheduled for February 19 from 6 - 8 pm
- Miss Jones stressed that that it’s best to have structured
activities vs “free time” in the gym.
- Suggestions were a cookie walk and Zumba or other activity in
the gym. Bingo, and other board games that Bridget O’Connor
received can be played in the lunchroom and classrooms.
- Other suggestions were a Lego building room, cup stacking, and
family style games such as “Minute to Win it”.
- Water and popcorn will be provided.
Enrichment
Bethany Miller has been working with Cornell students to present
an international cultural day of sharing at Washington Elementary.
A tentative date of April 1 was suggested.
NEW BUSINESS
Budget
- Miss Jones reported that Brain Pop cost an additional $200 and
that Spelling City was an additional $15 more than the original
budgeted amount.
- Transferred some of the checking funds over to money market to
earn more interest.
Library Funding
Mrs. Priske gave us an overview of how book fair earnings
help the library. She said her school budget is $1,700. The two
recent book fairs provided $4,500. Mrs. Priske is very grateful for
everything WETAP has done for the library.
She relies on book fair funds to bring the dollar per student
amount up to an acceptable level per state of Iowa standards.
Mrs. Priske shared some of her research and told us that in the
majority of schools, librarians run book fairs and therefore have
complete control of profits.
After answering several questions from the WETAP team, it
was decided that the next book fair will be handled by the library.
This will be a trial-run and Mrs. Priske will report back to WETAP
before a permanent decision is made.
Additional funding for the library was discussed. The birthday
book program is well received but could use more publicity. Last
year’s cake auction was a big success and will be repeated.
Officer Updates
- Jump Rope for Heart information will be coming out this spring.
- Fourth Grade Send-Off: WETAP will work with teachers to choose
a date. Should decide by March. Some ideas mentioned were:
renting the Bijou, bounce house at the park, and kickball game
with parents.
Teacher Appreciation
- Denae shared that she is all set for the upcoming teacher
conference meals.
- Staff appreciation week is in May.

student athletes to assist with the fundraiser.
AD REQUESTS:
• Radar gun and backpacks for volleyball. Approved for $299 on the
gun and maximum of $800 on the backpacks.
• For Speed & Agility - Approved $5,000 towards this summer, 12
day camp for up to 120 students with a $5,000 match from another
donor.
• Football jerseys in maroon and white color/2 sets. After much
discussion, approved up to $8,000 to act on this spring.

Funds available for spending are $4,000.
Business:
The following funding requests were approved:
• $750 for the auditorium grand piano repair requested by Thad
Wilkins
• $600 for High Interest Lower Level Reading Chapter Books
requested by Kim Steele
The annual ski trip was a success with no injuries reported. This year
there were over 120 non-student skiers – mainly parents, siblings,
and community members.
Opportunities to Volunteer:
We are currently recruiting volunteers to sell concessions at
Boys Basketball games. If you can help, please contact Kristine
Butterbaugh at kbutterbaugh@msn.com. This is a great way to
support P.R.I.D.E.!
Middle School Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up in midFebruary. Please be on the lookout for an email to volunteer to bring
in food items.

Old Business / New Business / Action Items:
• Discussed need to keep meeting length at 90 minutes or less.
Staff reports via Google Doc helping with this. Items to be added to
agenda be sent out Friday before meeting.
• Opera Iowa: Volunteers needed to unload and loading equipment
on the February 23. Opera Iowa will need a table in foyer and 4
tickets to performance. They will provide program - MVFAA can
insert a fundraising request. Show starts at 7:30 pm and is the same
night as ES Parent Teacher conferences. Discussed press release Sarah Richardson will talk to Jake Krob about adding press release to
MVL Sun. Ticket sales are up to MVFAA - decision made to charge $7
per ticket. Artwork will be needed.
• Volunteers needed to make fundraising plea before concerts Sherene will set-up Volunteer Spot and email to members.
• Discussed sending fundraising letter to businesses. Asked Sarah
Richardson to put together a letter.
• Scott Weber suggested that the trailer could be used as advertising
of community businesses and it could potentially pay for itself.
Karla Steffens-Moran will contact MVL CDG regarding promotion of
community on trailer.
• Strategic Planning: Need to put together list of short/long-term
objectives. A list is needed - where do we see our Fine Arts in 2 years,
5 years, 10 years? Definite need for FAA and parents to step-up. Elise
Rodenburg will start Google doc for staff to pencil in their thoughts
and have doc available in March.
• Communications: Community needs a sense of what Fine Arts
is doing, not just a bullet list. Fine Arts needs to be presented as
a unified group. Branding? "MVFAA at work again!" or something
similar? Also would be nice to have a column in the paper - "Here's
everything happening with Fine Arts!" Sarah Richardson encouraged
staff to send updates to the district for the newsletter. Also discussed
the need for social media presence. Twitter, Facebook, etc.
• Sue Margheim mentioned the lack of a theater presence at
the middle school since there is no longer an 8th Grade musical.
Discussed need to create a "bridge" between 8th grade and high
school. Discussed with Tom Stephens and Thad Wilkins some
opportunities, but there is a need to build those opportunities so
students have more exposure. Need to advocate a theater presence.
Would be great to have a Jr. Thespian Troop - 6th - 8th graders include workshops on auditioning, etc. Need an official way to get it
started - "If you build it, they will come!"
• Fundraising idea from Jo Nowak-Thompson: presented "Artwise"
calendar from out-of-state community. Artwork is from students, and
businesses sponsor one month in calendar. District dates added to
calendar, then they are sold to the school parents. Jo will follow-up
for time schedule need to put together calendar, costs, etc.
• Discussion on a quote from West Music for $3,631.50 for band
room sound system.
• Susan Hargus presented updates to MVFAA logo for review - still a
work in progress.
Next MVFAA meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016 at 7:00 pm in
the high school library.

OPEN ENROLLMENT
Open enrollment is the process for parents/guardians residing
in another Iowa district who want to enroll in the Mount Vernon
Community School District.
An application to is to be filed with the resident district by March
1, 2016 to be considered for the 2016-2017 school year.
Those enrolling in kindergarten have until September 1, 2016 to
file an application for open enrollment.
