The U. S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is responsible for enforcing the Animal Welfare Act regulations against dog breeders, puppy mills, etc. and has named Julian Prager as “Citizen Program Advisor”. Prager is a breeder of English bulldogs & is with an advocacy group for the interests of breeders & animal production industries including an AKC Delegate, a Board member for the National Animal Interest Alliance, etc. Prager wrote an e-mail advising AKC breeders on obtaining exemptions from licensing & other Animal Welfare Act regulations under the Secretary’s authority to grant certain exemptions depending on the effect on interstate commerce & the animals’ welfare. It is not APHIS job to protect interstate commerce & many are disappointed with the hiring of Julian Prager or any dog breeder. David Sacks is the spokesperson for the APHIS & e-mail can be sent to him at david.sacks@aphis.usda.gov or call him at (301) 734-5271 and ask that he add as a Citizen Program Advisor someone who is an advocate FOR dogs not for breeders. While the dogs were boarding there in July, the owner received a call that the animals had been killed by a black bear. Fox advised that the dogs were cremated. The owners then hired private detective Bo Dietl who advised that Fox did not live at the residence advertised. The investigators witnessed dogs tethered to trees, makeshift dirty kennels, & a big tent. Some dogs appeared emaciated & had no shelter from the elements. They also found dirty kennels, & Fox advised that they were for 2 puppies. “They were going to the bathroom in their crates all day – that’s what puppies do”. Fox was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon, illegal hunting & violation of fish & wildlife laws. He is also being investigated for alleged animal cruelty by the Sullivan County SPCA. 2 HUMANE NEWS Holiday 2014 MONMOUTH COUNTY SPCA WILDLIFE REHABBER SENTENCED TO PROBATION – MORE THAN 350 DEAD ANIMALS FOUND IN HOME After pleading guilty to animal cruelty, Gretchen Rell, 56, was sentenced to 5 years probation when more than 300 dead animals were found in her Little Silver home. In a plea bargain deal, she received probation instead of jail time. A discovery was made by Little Silver Police where over 357 dead animals were found – many of which were still in their original sealed crates or boxes. They included birds, turtles, rabbits, mice, possums & many which could not be identified due to their decomposition. Although they had been given to her for rehabilitation, the animals in her care died of starvation & dehydration. Cages were stacked from floor to ceiling in the basement & garage of the home. She must meet all of the requirements of her probationary term as part of her sentence. According to Monmouth County Superior Court Judge John Tassini, the requirements include recommendations of a psychiatric evaluation, and she must make available her medical, psychiatric & psychological records to authorities, etc. Rell must also complete 30 days community service & is prohibited from owning, residing with, or taking into her care or custody any animals during her probationary period. Tassini said his hands were tied by state law & he could not extend the ban on owning animals. As the sentence was being meted out, Rell sported feathers in her hair .. FBI CLASSIFIES ANIMAL ABUSE AS ‘CRIME AGAINST SOCIETY’ FBI Director James B. Comey announced a major change in policy when it will start reporting crimes of animal cruelty as a separate offense instead of a miscellaneous category. The Uniform Crime Reporting Program is a system used to collect data on specific crimes for tracking & trend analysis. This will provide valuable insight into the scope of animal abuse nationally & will force law enforcement agencies to treat animal cruelty as a serious crime in its own right. With this change, crimes against animals becomes crimes against society. Four categories of animal cruelty will be monitored: simple/gross neglect; intentional abuse and torture; organized abuse; and animal sexual abuse. CRUSH PORN VIDEO MAKERS IN PHILIPPINES SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON Vicente & Doma Ridon were found guilty in a Philippine court of child abuse, animal cruelty, human trafficking & wildlife protection crimes. Records indicate that the Ridons forced girls to torture & kill puppies, rabbits & other animals in “fetish” videos & they were sentenced to life behind bars. When the “crush” videos surfaced on the internet, PETA Asia notified the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation & worked with authorities to ensure that the Ridons were found, arrested & prosecuted. The videos included scantily clad girls (one of whom was about 12 years old) & they were filmed skinning a dog alive & burning another with a clothes iron, cutting off rabbits’ ears & setting the rabbits on fire while they flailed & screamed, hitting a monkey in the eye with the sharp end of a stiletto heel & crushing puppies until they vomited their own internal organs. According to PETA, sexual fetishists from Australia, France, Korea, Malaysia, the U.K., the U.S. & elsewhere purchased the videos on the internet & all face possible charges. This discovery of this video & the ultimate victory was made possible by a person who stumbled upon one of the horrible videos & took the time to report it to PETA Asia. NIH ENDS FUNDING FOR EXPERIMENTS USING DOGS FROM “RANDOM SOURCE” DEALERS Effective October 1st, the National Institutes of Health discontinued funding experiments using dogs from “random sources” – that could mean from an animal shelter that has pound seizure … or a buncher or a pound, i.e., a dog that could have been someone’s pet. The cessation of funding by the NIH is in response to a report from the National Academy of Sciences which concluded that cats & dogs acquired from random sources were not critical for biomedical research & using them could damage their reputation with the public. This decision does not affect the use of random source dogs by researchers who are not receiving NIH funding. HORSES ISRAEL BECOMES FIRST COUNTRY TO BAN HORSE-DRAWN CARTS in theNEWS PENNSYLVANIA APPROVES HARNESS RACING STANDARDS PHOTO COURTESY OF PETA/CHAI Israel has become the first country in the world to ban horse and donkey drawn carts & carriages – a 10 year effort by the Israeli animal rights group Hakol Chai which helped draft the legislation. An exemption was included that would allow municipal officials to grant a license to carriage drivers on a case by case basis, as long as the municipal veterinarian regularly inspects their horses & finds them to be in good condition. (Nahariya is currently the only city with horse-drawn carriages for tourists). Carriages will be restricted to roads with little traffic. Photographed were horses with blood streaming down their faces & legs from untreated wounds as well as starving horses who struggled to pull heavy loads & collapsed in the street from exhaustion. One rescued horse’s legs are permanently deformed from having been hobbled. Log on to ww.peta.org for this story. The Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission (HRC) has imposed stricter standards to safeguard horses from direct contact with whips during harness racing at the state’s tracks. Drivers must now use two hands on the reins at all times which restricts motion of the whip to a flick of the wrist & forearm. According to PHOTO COURTESY OF MATTI KEINNEN newspaper reports, the whips are normally used to strike the sides of the sulky or horse’s saddle pad, generating the “cracking” sound that encourages horses to go faster. For more information, log on to: www.agriculture.state.pa.us and search “racing”. PENNSYLVANIA HORSE DEALERS CHARGED WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY Three horse dealers are facing animal cruelty charges after they attempted to sell three maltreated animals at the New Holland auction in July. Charles & Lori Fisher and Patty Sherwood allegedly attempted to transport & sell the maltreated mares. Of those, two animals died & a third is receiving rehabilitative care. The Fishers are charged with multiple animal cruelty counts, multiple counts of transporting an animal in a cruel manner, & using a disabled animal. Sherwood is charged with multiple animal cruelty counts as well as three counts of transporting an animal in a cruel manner & three counts of using a disabled animal. The Lancaster County SPCA led the investigation into the incident. NEW MEXICO DAIRY FIRES WORKERS AFTER COW ABUSE IS CAUGHT ON TAPE Hidden camera footage of dairy employees beating & abusing cows at Winchester Dairy in New Mexico was released by Mercy for Animals. The dairy is a supplier for Leprino Foods, a self-proclaimed “world’s largest mozzarella cheese producer”. Leprino is a supplier to Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Papa John, featured on a new website called “Slice of Cruelty”. After the video was released, the New Mexico Livestock Board launched an investigation into the abuse allegations. A Domino’s spokesman said this was not an issue with the cheese supplier, but an “isolated case of sadistic acts”. Mercy For Animals has uncovered abuse & their website lists other examples of abuse caught on tape. (http://www.mercyforanimals.org/investigations.aspx). THOUGHT TO BE ADOPTED, BELGIAN MARE PASSED AROUND BY HORSE TRADERS Honey was one of 32 starving horses which were rescued & taken in by Gentle Giants of Pennsylvania. Eventually, Honey was adopted to a doctor in Virginia with good references & well-kept property. When a Christmas Card sent out by Gentle Giants came back undeliverable, the horse rescue group took to Missing Posters, Facebook, etc. & even hired a private investigator to track down Honey. They found that Honey had been “flipped” five times & when they found out the background, the horse’s price jumped fivefold to $5,000. She was living behind a trailer & a barbed wire fence. The group paid the ransom but contacted the doctor who agreed to pay the ransom so that her name would not be revealed. Great job & kudos to Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue! VEGAN COMPANY MUST TEST ON ANIMALS TO SELL FOOD IN CANADA The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CIFA) has forced the popular Field Roast Grain Meat Company to cease distribution of its vegan products in Canada because it hasn’t been tested on animals. Field Roast labels its products as “vegetarian grain meat” rather than “simulated PHOTO COURTESY OF FIELD ROAST meat”. A coalition of animal protection groups is urging Health Canada & CIFA to grant an immediate exemption to Field Roast to continue to sell its products in Canada & to work to reform the out-dated regulations that have caused the temporary halt in shipments. The Seattle-based company said they would have to torment rats in a laboratory to satisfy Canadian law. Field Roast says that’s just not going to happen. No animal will be harmed in the making of this company’s products. A Field Based spokesman said: “We’re driven to make these foods because we feel very strongly about having compassion for animals. Fundamentally, we’re against (animal testing)”. www.ahscares.org 3 Be A Responsible Tourist ... NATIONAL NEWS F & W WARNS OF LEGAL THREAT TO END ESCAMBIA COUNTY (FL.) FREE ROAM FERAL CATS Recently, U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) sent a letter to Escambia County, Florida officials claiming that the agency “strongly opposes free-roaming, domestic or feral cats” and TNR programs. The letter also threatened legal PHOTO COURTESY: DUYGU AGAR action if the county does not “eliminate free-ranging feral cats”. According to Best Friends, USFWS has repeatedly promoted the killing of cats while insisting publicly that the agency does not have an official position on this issue. For more information to protect cats, visit http://www.capwiz.com/bestfriends/issues/alert/?alertid=63290496&type=ML HOLIDAY TRAVELERS – BE WARY OF BUYING ILLEGAL SOUVENIRS Thousands of holiday travelers will be off to foreign lands to enjoy the local color and perhaps buy souvenirs. TRAFFIC is the wildlife trade monitoring network cautioning tourists to be wary of souvenirs made from wildlife parts. The group handed out over a thousand luggage labels that encouraged visitors to download the Wildlife Witness App to report illegal wildlife trade throughout various regions. Travelers going to far off lands could have a positive impact on wildlife by saying NO to items such as jewelry from tiger teeth & claws, bags & shoes made from protected reptile skins, ivory carvings, accessories made from turtle shell or coral & medicines made from endangered wildlife or plants. Tourism’s role in fighting illicit trafficking, including wildlife trafficking was highlighted in March to launch a global campaign entitled: “Travel, don’t traffic”. Travelers can make better choices about their purchases while on holiday. DON’T PATRONIZE WILD ANIMAL ATTRACTIONS FISH & WILDLIFE TO REVISE RULES ON BALD & GOLDEN EAGLE PROTECTION ACT The U . S. Fish & Wildlife Service will be revising rules under the Bald & Golden Eagle Protection Act regulating the taking of eagles associated with windpower & other activities. FEDERAL RULES REQUIRE AIRLINES TO REPORT LOST & HURT ANIMALS Effective January 1st 2015, airlines must file reports for lost or hurt animals shipped commercially, such as those of a breeder. The new rules apply to any airline with a plane that holds more than 60 passengers. The airlines will have to file monthly reports documenting each lost, injured or deceased animal, along with an annual report totaling the number of incidents. Airlines will also track the number of animals they transport each year. This is as a result of a petition started by the Animal Legal Defense Fund after 7 puppies died on an American flight from Tulsa to Chicago. Since the puppies were shipped by a breeder, the airline did not have to report the deaths to federal authorities. Airlines still will not have to report information about zoo animals. And dogs & cats are the only research animals covered by the new rules. U.S. F&W GIVES 25 MILLION ACRES OF PROTECTION TO CANADA LYNX A decision just finalized by U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service gives the Canada lynx almost 25 million acres of federally protected “critical habitat” across six states: Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Washington & Wyoming. The population had dropped dramatically in the past due to trapping & habitat loss. CALIFORNIA BANS SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAGS California is the first state in the nation to institute a statewide plastic ban. It is believed that the legislation will eliminate at least 13 billion plastic bags per year. The ban will go into effect July 2015 & liquor & convenience stores will have until July 2016 to switch to paper or reusable bags. Organizations representing the plastic bag industry are threatening action – to put a proposition on the ballot 2 years from now for voters to decide whether the bag ban should be revoked. 4 HUMANE NEWS Holiday 2014 PHOTO COURTESY: GABRIEL SCHOUTEN DE JEL The World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA) has launched a new campaign targeting tourists searching for wild animal attractions simply unaware of the abuse behind the scenes. Before they book, let tourists know the truth: http://beforetheybook.worldanimalprotection.org From elephant rides, walking with lions, taking selfies with tigers, swimming with dolphins – tourists are largely unaware of the cruelty behind the scenes. The brutal truth to riding an elephant or walking with lions, is that they break the wild animals’ spirits to a point that they will accept interaction with people. It involves cruelty at every turn – snatching them from their parents in the wild or breeding in captivity, keeping under inadequate conditions & beating them into submission & to break their wills. Research shows a startling result: almost 50% of people who pay for a wild animal experience do so because of their love of animals. BANS ANIMAL TESTING Lorillard Tobacco Company, the third largest manufacturer of cigarettes in the U.S., has issued a policy banning animal testing unless such tests become mandated by federal law. This makes Lorillard the largest company in the U. S. to end animal testing. In their new policy statement on their website, Lorillard will use scientifically accepted or validated alternative test methods & technologies that avoid the use of live animals. When testing is required, Lorillard promised to comply with established guidelines on the humane use & care of animals as outlined by the Animal Welfare Act & National Research Council for Care & Use of Lab Animals. On Aug. 24th, the AHS dispatched an ambulance for two dogs tied to a pole in Newark. They were emaciated & in need of emergency medical care. Mr. Bones, the white male, was a mere shell of himself – both physically & psychologically. Sadly, he had been ignored and abandoned by a previous owner. They shattered his innocence when they tied him & his companion to a pole and walked away. They didn’t love him enough to care for him & he wouldn’t have lasted much longer on the street. Mr. The two dogs were tied together to a pole Bones was traumatized by the and abandoned. Since arrival at AHS, they have person he trusted & it showed gained weight & are now ready for lifetime when he walked through our commitments. doors. His head hung low; he was depressed & heartbroken. But after a month at the AHS, he gained almost 20 pounds. His companion, Bianca was not in as rough shape as Mr. Bones, but has weathered & improved after the abandonment in a better way than he has. AHS offered a $1,000 for the arrest & conviction of this heartless cruelty. Thanks to donations to our Res-Q Fund, we are able to pull many hopeless animals through the rough times. Mr. Bones & Bianca are at the AHS in Newark. For more information, call the AHS at 973-824-7080 or e-mail associatedhumane@aol.com & refer to File182263 & File 1282641 (Newark). Mr. Bones (r.) and Bianca both gained over 20 pounds each and have gained not only some weight, but lots of confidence. BJ & BLUE – ABANDONED IN HOUSE WITH SQUATTERS The uncared for animals stared desperately out the window in the hope that someone would rescue them from their present circumstances. The AHS received several e-mails and phone calls concerning 2 dogs abandoned in a residence & were there for weeks without food, water or being let out. Many phone calls were made to the City of Newark Animal Control according to the complaints. Passersby saw the dogs desperately looking out the window. The AHS sent an ambulance to the scene to verify the complaint. There were squatters in the abandoned house who said the dogs belonged to someone else. While AHS staffers were on the scene, an alleged owner said he cannot take them at this time and surrendered them to AHS. BJ and Blue are now at the Newark shelter and we are hoping for a lifetime of love for each of them. For more information, call AHS at 973-824-7080 or e-mail associatedhumane@aol.com and refer to File 129297-M and File 129298-M (Newark) 6 HUMANE NEWS Holiday 2014 BJ and Blue are both at AHS’ Newark facility where they are thriving and available for adoption. They were given temperament evaluations and passed with flying colors. When AHS staffers arrived, little 4 month old BJ was clinging to Blue for protection. The pair are now at the Newark shelter filled with playful, puppy enthusiasm. Both have been given temperament evaluations, passed with flying colors and are good by the food bowl. COVER STORIES Continued from Page 1 SEARCHING FOR A HOME, PUP WALKS UP TO A “FRIEND” & GETS SHOT What an adorable pup – most families would welcome him into their home. But he was lost, hungry & alone – a gentle, trusting soul who was hoping to find a friend … a home … someone who would welcome him. And as he walked up to the gate on South 13th St. in Newark, someone shot him. An officer from the Newark Police Dept. contacted AHS & the officer met up with the Animal Control Officer at the shelter. The ACO immediately brought him to the Animal Emergency & Referral Associates in Fairfield The young pup had a gunshot wound that traveled through his chest, as it occurred on the diaphragm & a part of the liver. weekend when no veterinarian was available at AHS. Due to his serious condition, he needed continued care by the veterinarian and stayed longer. He had a gunshot wound that went through his chest, through the diaphragm & through the lobe of the liver & out his abdomen. There was also damage to his gall bladder that was causing problems. This was causing more problems, so an additional surgery was required to remove it a week later. PHOTO SUPPLIED EMACIATED DOGS LEFT TO DIE IN ABANDONED HOUSE The emaciated lass stood in the third floor window & was so terrified, she was ready to jump to her death. They are together and waiting for a chance at happiness. They did not deserve this treatment. File 129208-F (Newark). Autumn was imprisoned in a cage without food or water and filled with feces. She is now at the AHS shelter with Willow and both are seeking a lifetime of love. File 129207-F (Newark). It was only a matter of time before two hopeless dogs left to die in an abandoned house would have met their fate. When the AHS received a phone call, they went to the house and found nothing until they reached the third floor. There they found the skeletal figures of two dogs that someone left there without food or water for an interminable amount of time. One pathetic pit mix was in a cage and the other was loose by an open window. The emaciated dog was so terrified, she was ready to jump out the third floor window to her death. Asst. Director Scott Crawford moved deftly to secure her. Both dogs were brought back to the AHS shelter where the first thing they did was drink bowls of water. Sadly, one dog appears to have had a litter and both have weathered abuse and neglect. They were traumatized & quietly accepted our offerings of food, water & soothing words of comfort. Our staff sees such neglected orphans arrive all too often & makes an extra effort to help the newcomers feel welcomed. We have named them Autumn & Willow and are hoping to make a difference in their lives. We wish for them a loving home, a bottomless food bowl, a large grassy yard to romp. For more information, call AHS at 973-824-7080 and refer to File 129207- and File 129208(Newark). When AHS staffers arrived, one dog was abandoned in a cage and the other sat on the window ledge, ready to jump to her death from the third floor. As we go to press, we have found that City of Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka has introduced a Municipal Ordinance to the Newark Municipal Council that will hold out-of-state credits of foreclosed & abandoned properties responsible for maintenance & upkeep of the properties or face fines. The ordinance is designed to hold them accountable for maintaining the security & appearance of the properties during foreclosure action & after. Many abandoned houses are used to hold dogs for dogfights, breeding, and baiting. ahscares.org 7 Join! the POPCORN PARK WILDLIFE CLUB A lab in Maryland had 20 – 25 Patas monkeys that were no longer of use to them and faced being euthanized. A rescue group heard of their plight and made arrangements for them to be placed all together. These monkeys, having been separate most of their lives, would now have to adjust to a life in a monkey troop. All but two did. Both Dogo, (above left), a 7 year old female, and Archie, (right), an 8 year old male, were very submissive and were repeatedly picked on and injured. They spent most of their time hiding and/or sick. Because of this, each needed to be segregated. The rescue group asked Popcorn Park if we could take in Archie and Dogo. In early October, a trip was made to Maryland and Archie and Dogo were brought to Popcorn Park to live out the rest of their lives. At the refuge, they both love dinner time, which includes such things as chicken, pasta, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and protein biscuits. While Dogo loves her biscuits, Archie gobbles up the grapes. They also enjoy breakfast, which might be cereal, sunflower seeds, or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The pair is doing well together. Dogo has flourished without the stress of the “troop” and Archie is healing from his wounds nicely. It seems that they were meant for one another. Perhaps they were also meant for you ... to sponsor. Anubis is a serval cat whose wild family roams the African savannas. Unfortunately, serval cats became popular as pets and their domestication began to make money in the pet trade. Anubis was once a pet, but when the owner had no time to spend with him and he started to become destructive, she asked if we could take him. We built him a spacious indoor/outdoor enclosure and now he resides comfortably at Popcorn Park. What will the holidays have in store for Anubis? We hope he will find some new loving sponsors. Bonnie is a green-winged macaw. Her owner gave her up 8 years ago when she was moving, said that Bonnie was “too big” to take along. Really? We think that Bonnie’s the perfect size AND the perfect color. She’s bright and beautiful this holiday season and all year long in her festive red and green feathers. Why not bring Bonnie some good cheer and sponsor her? 8 HUMANE NEWS Holiday 2014 PARK WILDLIFE CLUB POPCORN If you haven’t yet been to Popcorn Park, come down and visit! BOWEL OBSTRUCTION SURGERY SAVES KASHI – ADOPTED TO LOVING HOME IN HAMILTON Penny was found as an emaciated stray late one night last March. She was near death when allegedly left on someone’s front lawn that night. When we retrieved her, she was skin & bones, dehydrated, & so weak, she could not stand. Named Kashi, she was rushed to our Medical Dept. where our veterinarians; Dr. Baris & Dr. Nalven worked an entire afternoon on her obstructed bowels. Thanks to our vets, the surgery was successful. It took some time for her to recover & she was soon eating on her own. The Leszczuk Family of Hamilton came to meet Penny and bonded with her instantly. Below, John Bergmann, Aslan’s liberator, spent some quiet time alone before he was leaving for his new life. In the summer of 2013, AHS staffers, led by John Bergmann, Forked River Director, assisted federal authorities on a Monmouth County raid of illegal activities including dogfighting. Several dogs were removed including one which had been used for bait just hours before. He was lying in pool of blood in bad shape in a garage. John picked up the crate to remove the poor dog & as he lifted the crate, the dog stood up & licked the fingers of his liberator to show his gratefulness … & from that day, there was a special bond. John named him Aslan, like the strong yet gentle lion. All of the dogs required medical care but Aslan had the worst injuries & was also emaciated, sick, and in pain. Aslan continued to show John & the veterinarians how appreciative he was for their care. We all knew eventually, some special people would come in and see in Aslan what we all saw ..... a bright, beautiful, loving boy that deserved the best life ever. ASLAN THE DOGFIGHT VICTIM FINDS LOVING FAMILY AFTER A YEAR AT AHS Well, that day has come. Aslan made the rounds and said his goodbyes to his great friends, & then he spent some private one-on-one time saying a very special goodbye to his friend, John, who truly saved his life and gave him the chance to rise from the ashes. Aslan then greeted his new family with a big leap into their laps, a sloppy kiss, and a big hug. We would like to wish this wonderful family a very long, happy, and healthy life together! John Hickenlooper has signed a bill making it illegal to race greyhounds in the state. A report coming from GREY2K shows that greyhounds running at tracks in Colorado were forced to live lives of strict confinement in stacked cages that often left no room for larger dogs to completely stand up. Over 2,636 injuries were reported at Colorado tracks between 1993 & 2007. Over half of the injuries involved broken legs and fractured spines. FLORIDA A recent law requires the reporting of any greyhound deaths. Thanks to this new law, statistics show that over the last few months of 2013, over 74 greyhound deaths occurred at 10 Florida tracks. Advocates are proposing that injuries should be reported as well. For more information, log on to www.grey2k.org CALIFORNIA The Animal Legal Defense Fund is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators who used a golf club to massacre 920 chickens at a Foster Farms facility near Fresno. The killers broke into the property through a hole in the fence & beat nearly 1,000 chickens to death. Under California law, the perpetrator could be imprisoned for up to 3 years and/or fined $20,000. Anyone with information should contact Deputy Chris Curtice at the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office at 559-600-3111. FLORIDA A new report issued by the Center for Biological Diversity reveals that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers & the State of Florida have fast-track authorization of watercraft access projects – ignoring manatee deaths & without analyzing data – enabling boat collisions that continue to be the leading killer of manatees. Neither the Army Corps of Engineers nor the Fish & Wildlife Service appear to keep track of how many watercraft permits are issued in Florida. The mortality from watercraft continues to be the leading cause of death for manatees. MISSOURI Kansas City has started an innovative program to train officers in animal behavior, & instead of shooting dogs, the officers use stun guns to subdue attacking dogs. Dog deaths due to police shootings are down 80% as a result of the initiative. The stun guns acquired are designed to target the body of a dog more easily than the stun guns used on humans. HB1750 would correct the oversight. As amended, the bill would prohibit the shooting of animals that have been tethered or otherwise restrained immediately prior to shooting. It passed the House & now needs to pass the Senate but will have to return to the House so they can agree to the amendment. DOGS MAY SPOT HUMAN PROSTATE CANCER WITH AMAZING ACCURACY Two specially trained dogs were able to detect organic chemicals released into urine by prostate cancers with a combined accuracy rate of 98% according to findings of a presentation at an annual meeting of the American Urological Association. The study was done by Dr. Gianluigi Taverna, a researcher with Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan. Samples were taken from 677 people including 320 prostate cancer patients & 357 healthy individuals. Researchers trained the 2 dogs using hundreds of urine samples taken from both healthy people & those with prostate cancer. The dogs received a reward when they caught the scent of a cancer-infected sample & sat in front of it. One dog proved able to accurately detect the presence of prostate cancer 98.9% while the other had an accuracy rating of 97.3%. A debate is currently raging over whether prostate cancer is overdetected & overtreated. A previous study found that dogs could accurately identify patients with lung cancer by smelling their breath said Dr. Charles Ryan, an associate professor of medicine & urology at the University of California, San Francisco, Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Since the findings were presented at a meeting, they should be considered preliminary until they've been published in a peer-review journal. HEARTWORM CAN BE A DEADLY DISEASE Heartworm is easily preventable when dogs & cats receive a monthly medication. Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitos & is found in all 50 states. Vets have noted an increase in heartworm cases & that it could be explained that too many pet owners did not administer heartworm preventives on time & as directed. Pets should be tested yearly & put on preventive medicine for heartworm year-round. According to the American Heartworm Society (AHS), preventing the disease runs less than 10% of the cost of treating it. According to the AHS, no approved treatment medication exists for cats. VETERINARY Medical Wonders New Hampshire Falcon Receives Artificial Lenses According to newspaper reports, a blind 4 year old falcon named Banner was given the gift of sight after a New Hampshire veterinarian removed her cataracts & put in artificial lenses – the first procedure of its kind. Banner hadn’t been able to fly or hunt for the past two years. Capital Veterinary Emergency Services in Concord performed the operation. A Canadian ophthalmology supplier donated the 6 mm-wide lenses while several from other countries were involved in the design. Banner is now with his owners, Nancy & Jim Cowan of the New Hampshire School of Falconry. Australian Goldfish Given Operation for Tumor George is a 10 year old goldfish that had a life threatening tumor. His owners opted to have an operation done to remove it at the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. George was given a general anesthetic so Dr. Tristan Rich could perform the operation. Frist George swam in a bucket of water laced with anesthetic. When the 45 minute operation was done, he was given painkillers & antibiotics & after a few minutes, he was swimming around. According to the hospital’s Facebook page, George has returned home & as long as he stays in good health, he is expected to live another 20 years. “The everyday kindness of the back roads more than makes up for the acts of greed in the headlines.” ~Charles Kuralt, On the Road With Charles Kuralt www.ahscares.org 21 A Special Remembrance Ingeborg Connaughton Walter Connaughton – NJ Dominick Degennaro Vaughn & Hanni Young – NJ Heidi LaMonica – ME Tory, my three-legged wonder dog, who filled my life with love and joy for 14 years. AVMA Updates ◆ AVMA DOES NOT RECOMMEND GAS CHAMBERS FOR “ROUTINE EUTHANASIA” The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has finally agreed in its Guidelines for Euthanasia for Animals that carbon monoxide gas chambers are not recommended for “routine euthanasia” of dogs and cats (but the recommendation is buried on Page 99). The AVMA’s acceptance of the CO gas chambers are not recommended. ◆ THE AVMA’S POLICY ON CAT DECLAWING The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)has clarified the group’s policy on cat declawing to stress that it is major surgery, making prominent use of the word “amputation” in describing the procedure for the first time. The main intent is to elevate the seriousness of the procedure and that it is not a simple one. The AVMA policy emphasizes that declawing should be considered only as a last resort. MOVING?? Have a safe & peaceful holiday for you, your family and your pets. When homeless orphans come through our doors, it may take a little time for our staff to determine what their particular needs are and how we can best help them. Sometimes it’s easy …. sometimes it’s a challenge, but we always try and see how we can make their stay comfortable, and how we can mend their broken hearts and heal their hurt. In some cases, we find the key to their broken heart, and it hurts even more. Rocky was one of two Shar Pei littermates released by their owner who could no longer keep them. Although it is usually policy to keep “families” together, this pair was always fighting, so a decision was made to adopt them out separately. As soon as Benzi found a lifetime home, Rocky softened his rough, defiant, uncooperative manner. Ever since his littermate left, Rocky keeps a vigil in the corner of his kennel. He positions himself so he can constantly watch the door where customers come and go, and rarely turns away from gazing at the door. If you visit him, his lonely eyes watch you as you walk away, hoping you’ll just look back at him with a little love. He has been with us for 6 months and his empty days continue to be spent watching …. and waiting. File 23615-M (Forked River). Meet Daria, found as a stray in Newark with pups. After a brief stay at our Newark facility, Daria & her family were sent to our Tinton Falls shelter. It’s obvious that she was used as a breeding factory. Her pups have all been adopted, and we’ve insured that phase of her life is finished. Now it is time for Mama Daria to enjoy a life filled with love. Each time a prospective adopter walks through the shelter, Daria picks up her favorite toy with hope in her eyes as if to say: “Want to play with me?” She clearly longs to find someone who will give her the attention and love that she has been waiting for. T hor & Hercules of Barnegat The homeless dogs arrive daily – grieving, hurt, shocked, traumatized by whatever failings have brought them to a shelter for unwanted animals. The staff meets newly-arrived dogs with open arms – expressing an affectionate, warm welcome to help them over the hurdles of their broken hearts. As each new dog arrives at our Forked River facility, they are scheduled for a Spa Day in the mobile grooming van. The heartache of either leaving a home that was so dear to them, or being retrieved from a horror filled nightmare, we feel it is important that they be treated to a Spa Day. During their grooming, they get the attention they profoundly miss …. something we cannot fathom. Our staffers give them some one-on-one time – so precious to a lost soul. It is hopeful that here begins a bonding process with our staff so that they will know we care. Each of these dogs have been treated to a Spa Day to buoy their spirits and give them hope for the future. The pups pictured are included on our Share-A-Pet Program so that you can share a part of your heart. Lady of Highlands Meet Hercules & Thor who have been at the shelter since April. It was early evening when the two Labrador mixes were found running at large. The AHS was able to trace the owner of the two dogs who advised that he did not want them back. The 2 year old gentle giants are very affable …. but they would never make the Honor Roll … their Spa Day was not especially noteworthy to their inner spirit as they are already happy & we have included them on the Share-A-Pet Program. Fred of Barnegat It was March 1st when the AHS received a call in the early evening to pick up a stray dog. The Labrador mixture was about 5-6 years old and very friendly. There were no means of identification & though we had hoped there was a heartbroken owner waiting for the return of his dog, no one came and no one called. But there were several people who showed an interest in the handsome gent saying that they would be back. They never did come back & the sadly dejected and rejected Fred deserved a Spa Day to lift his spirits. He is outgoing, very friendly and hoping for “a new leash on life”. SHARE-A-PET HOLIDAY 2014 Lady was devastated when surrendered by her original owner. She was housebroken when she arrived, but after a brief adoption stint, she was returned due to a bathroom accident. The hurt & rejection cannot be erased & it shows in her soulful eyes. She needed a Spa Day & is becoming happy & outgoing. Lady is accepting of her homeless days & lonely nights but we would like to put a little joy (and some sponsors) in her life.
