What does the Bible say about helping people? Isaiah 58:10 ESV “If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the
darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.” Proverbs 19:17 ESV “Whoever is generous to
the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.”1 John 3:17 ESV “But if
anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him,
how does God's love abide in him?” 1 John 4:11 ESV “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also
ought to love one another.”
This month, I am going to write about something near and dear to my heart. This
month I am going to write about Michelle Fox.
Michelle and I go way back. Our fathers were friends for as long as I can remember.
We celebrated together, went on vacations together and have been in and out of each others
lives forever. Her family is my family, not by blood of course, but in every other sense of
the word. I love these crazy people more than words can possibly express.
This past spring, while preparing for her son Jacob’s wedding, Michelle called me
and told me of a lump that she had found in her breast. She had had it looked at and the
results came back “abnormal”. She was deciding what to do; to put it out of her mind until
after the wedding or get it retested to see if it was actually something to worry about or not.
After a great deal of soul searching on her part, Michelle went to Sioux Falls and had it
looked at again. It was, in fact, cancer. Not just any type of cancer either. The doctors were
calling it an aggressive form of cancer and treatment was started immediately.
In May of this year, Michelle started chemotherapy. She lost her hair before the June
wedding of her son. She has been sick for a lot of this summer. Through it all, she has kept
her attitude positive. This past week, we learned that surgery has been scheduled for
September 12th. From there, she has many weeks of radiation to endure.
As her friend, there is not much you can do. You are supportive and loving but other
than that you sit back and watch helplessly. Even though I understand what it is like to have
illness, I don’t understand cancer. No words can take away cancer.
It was through my sister that the idea was born of a “tip night” at Pizza Ranch in
Sibley. Finally, something physically I can do for Michelle. I got the ball rolling and the rest
is history. On September 16th (four days after Michelle’s surgery) Pizza Ranch is going to
open it’s doors to us. All tips received that night will go to Michelle. In addition to that,
Pizza Ranch will donate 10% of the proceeds to her. I can tell you that this will help the Fox
family out. With the work she has missed, and the work she will miss, money is tight. But
even more so than money, this is a chance for people to come and show Michelle that they
care and support her.
Bulletin announcements will be coming out in the next weeks. Mark you calendars
for September 16th and plan on coming out to support Michelle.

School has already begun and you may now be asking the question, “Where did the summer go?”
The summer here at First Reformed Church was packed with a lot of great opportunities! It was neat to
see so many things happening and so many people involved. Let me review and reflect a little:
The summer began with Vacation Bible School on May 28th, the day after Memorial Day. This was
a week earlier than other years. Our directors, team leaders, story tellers and helpers did a great job in
presenting gospel-centered messages that challenged the children to “STAND STRONG” for Jesus.
Just last week I and my grandkids, Ruby and Matt listened and sang along with the CD of the VBS
songs. The songs brought back some very good memories of that week!
The next big event for Naomi and me was the mission trip to Haiti from June 12th to 21st. We
along with Dr. Greg, Deb, and Kate Kosters, Kate’s friend, Erin Schulte and Sheri Koerselman spent a
productive week working with the Haitians. It was the first trip Naomi and I made to Haiti and it
proved to be a real eye-opener! We experienced a whole different way of life among people who have
so little materially, but are yet so spiritually rich. A great highlight of my week and really of my life
was the privilege to preach and serve communion there. I was also blessed to participate in a pastors’
seminar. Naomi was able to serve with Dr. Kosters and Kate in meeting some of the medical needs of
the people. We all worked hard to cement the floors in two homes and paint and make a new doorway
for a school. We will be sharing more about it on Sunday, September 29th.
The month of July was filled with several outreach activities. On July 7th many of us did a prayer
walk here in Sibley. On the 13th four of us took an opinion poll of people in Sibley. That was
followed by our booth at the fair the next week. Then on July 24 many of us went to Sioux Falls to
serve the meal at the Banquet. During the month of July our church young people and leaders also had
the Deep Impact and C-4 trips.
As you can see from the above activities, the people of First Church were active and busy this summer. A lot of good work and activities were done. I’m very grateful to have been involved in these
ministries with you. Thanks for your part in these events and for your part in supporting them with
your prayers and gifts. You have used your spiritual gifts for the glory of God and the blessing of
many people. Our “labor in the Lord is not in vain” (I Cor. 15:58).

I have a confession to make….I have been struggling in my passion for Jesus.
I’m not proud to admit that but it’s true. I was just hit with this today as we talked
about passion during our staff meeting. Somewhere along the way I have lost my
passion in sharing Jesus with others. I have lost my passion in connecting with other
people. I have lost my passion in being determined to read God’s Word. I haven’t
been completely without these things in my life, but my passion for them has been
slowly evaporating.
I’m not sure when it started but I know that I could come up with some lame
excuses about how busy I have been lately with “doing church” and “doing ministry” that I lost the passion that I once had to serve others. My point is that I have
struggled with a lack of passion in my life for a little while now.
I was reminded today, though, about how to get my passion back, and let me
tell you that I have it back now! The book that we have been studying together in
our staff meetings, The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader by John C. Maxwell,
mentions 3 ways that we can increase our passion. The first is to take your temperature by getting an honest assessment from others and yourself about your current
level of desire. This is what hit me. All that I needed to do was be honest with myself and I knew that I had lost my passion. The second point is to return to your first
love. In the world of ministry, for me, this is youth ministry. I absolutely love youth
ministry and working with young people and I had forgotten how much I loved it
because I was distracted with other things and with doing things rather than just being myself. The third point is to associate with people of passion. I need to surround
myself with other people who share the same passion that I do because those people
will rub off and become contagious. I’m working on this and hoping that the people
that I choose to surround myself with will rub off on me in different ways.
I mention all of this because I feel like many of our young people have lost
their passion for Jesus too. If we were to look at the messages our culture sends to
our kids I think many of us would be shocked that our kids aren’t in worse shape.
Sex, lust, drinking, partying, self-centeredness, and homosexuality are all very strong
messages in the lives of our kids and they all push people farther away from God. It
absolutely breaks my heart. We have the single greatest message in the world that
Jesus died for us in order to redeem us. How could someone not be passionate about
that?!! We need to quit listening to the voices of this world and to step up, be bold,
and be passionate about God. If we don’t, our young people will fall through the
cracks and distance themselves farther and farther from God as they get older. Sure
it’s a challenge and won’t be easy, but if we can be their example I’m convinced they
will see something in us and wonder what make us so different than everyone else.

Centennial Celebration
in October!—
The Education and Property Ministries are asking for your help.
We are looking for any church memorabilia that you have at your
home to be loaned to the church for our celebration. We are looking for items such as pictures (of the church or even your wedding
pictures taken at FRC.), bulletins, newspaper articles and the like
that you would let us display for the centennial. All items will be returned, so
please make sure that they are marked. Give any items that you have to either
Laurel Klaassen or Tracee Brouwer. If you have further questions, please give
Laurel or Tracee a call. Thank you in advance for anything you can help us with.
From the Centennial Committee: There are activities being planned for the Sundays leading up
to the Centennial Celebration. The 2nd Sunday, October 13, the committee would like you to
come to church dressed like one of the era's between 1913 and 2013. Many styles have evolved
since the church began, so try to come up with a style from your time frame.

June, 2013
Dear Friends and Supporters,
It is so good to know that we have friends who are constantly praying for the
ministry here on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Thank you so much; we pray that
God continues to bless each one of you, along with your families. Because of your support, we have been able to provide meals to over one hundred children! These kids not
only receive physical meals, but we also provide them with spiritual meals. Each day
they pray and sing praises to God. Then Pastor Gonzalo shares a Bible story with
them. It is such a good feeling when a child approaches you and can recite a Bible
verse. Well, this is just what little Helen does. She has been very interested in learning
more and more Bible verses. Sometimes she just runs up to Bernardeth and says "I
know a new Bible verse!" and then recites it with a very happy face. Indeed it is so
good to see her learn more about the word of God and not be ashamed or afraid to
share His precious word. --Psalm 119:11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I
might not sin against You. (NKJV)
In February of this year, the first and also a new Tabitha's Home # 2 was
blessed. This was a very special moment when brothers and sisters from Nicaragua
and the U.S.A. got together and prayed that God may continue to bless these homes
and that the kids who live in them may grow to be men and women that love and
serve the Lord with joy. We also thank God for the opportunities He gave to each of
you to be a part of this wonderful ministry. Thank you so much, because without your
support this would not be a reality.
On Labor Day, May 1, we had fun with the kids of the two Tabitha's Homes. We
had a fun-filled day and picnic, which the children were very appreciative of. We are
so thankful for your continued prayers. Please pray for: Each of our girls and boys at
the home: Lily, Eva, Jolecsi, Joselyn, Miladi, Yulhica, Alcira, Shayann, Arlene, Melvin,
Joiner, Dariel and Evi. Pray for mothers and fathers of the children from the comedor;
that they may come to know and accept the Lord as their Savior; Our whole family
and also for our daughter, Abebja, as she is in her senior year of high school. Pray that
she may be directed to walk in the right path and discern what the Lord our God has
planned for her; Each and every member of this ministry, especially for the ladies who
are taking care of the kids at the homes. Pray that they may always find joy in serving
these children and that God may continue to bless them and their families. We pray
that God may continue to bless you and may His marvelous love cover each of you always. In Christ's

Bible Study Verse: Luke 7:44-48 The he turned toward the
woman and said to Simon. “Do you see this woman? I came
into your house, You did not give me any water for my feet, but
she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You
did not give me a kiss but this woman, from the time I entered
has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my
head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell
you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much.
But he who has been forgiven little loves little.” Then Jesus said
to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” (NIV)
Thoughts: The story here is about the contrast between two
broken people—one who didn’t know he was broken, and one
who did; one who didn’t receive the forgiveness of Jesus, and
one who did.
Sometimes we think our sins are not so bad if they’re the sins
everyone commits. Special sins now they’re the bad ones. But
to Jesus, they’re all the same; and because of the sacrifice He
made on the cross, they’re all equally forgivable. The good news
starts with the knowledge that we are sinners, that we are broken. So, knowing that we are broken prepares us to meet Christ,
the only remedy for our brokenness. (Steve S.)
Action Point: Call a person a sinner and he will turn you off.
He’ll think you’re telling him that you are better than he is. But
tell him he is broken just like you are, and he’ll know you care
about him. Once a person admits he is broken and that he can’t
fix himself, he is in a place where he can receive the good news
of undeserved grace and forgiveness in Christ Jesus.
Sportsmen’s Tip for the Day: Man has a God-given ability to
fix what is broken. When you use that ability to fix your equipment, it makes you a better steward of what God has given you.

I’m fully convinced that this coming year is a critical one for our
church’s involvement in Kids Hope USA. We currently only have
2 mentors who are meeting with students, since 2 of our kids from
last year moved on to the middle school. Both of our current students are in 3rd grade so they will only be in the program through
next year, which means after next year we will most likely not have any students in
the program, which absolutely breaks my heart.
I’ll be completely honest here. I don’t feel like we do a very good job of supporting Kids Hope USA in our church. We have a very select few who are mentors
and who are prayer partners but Kids Hope USA is not a ministry that is at the forefront of our minds when I believe it should be. We have a structure in place where
we can positively impact one child’s life. We can be a mentor to that one child and
take them from being discouraged about school and about life in general to giving
them the self-confidence they need in order to succeed later in life. We can build future leaders in the process and help to shape our world for years to come. We are
missing an incredible opportunity that I am afraid we would regret later if we didn’t
follow through with Kids Hope USA.
So as we continue our partnership with Kids Hope USA for this coming school
year I am begging for God to move in the hearts of people to invest in Kids Hope
USA. There might be other avenues for us to explore where we could partner with
other local churches to get the mentors that we need but I really believe that we could
benefit from investing in this ministry. I would ask for you to pray about Kids Hope
USA’s partnership with our church and to see if God would have you play a part in
this wonderful ministry opportunity. Please let me know if God is speaking to you
about Kids Hope USA. I know that you won’t regret ever getting involved in investing in the life of one child.

CONSISTORY MEETING
Pastor Bruce read from John 17:20-23 and Ephesians 4:1-6 and shared a Words of Hope
devotional on unity and lead in prayer.
The search team presented their report as to their progress.
Pastor Bruce shared the Interim Pastor’s report and Pastor Mike will be getting his to us.
Ministry Chairs shared their reports. Highlights include:
Outreach Ministry: Shared results of the survey they took and their committee’s role in
the centennial celebration.
Worship Ministry: In the process of planning the Worship Service for the Centennial.
Discussed different activities that will occur leading up to the centennial
celebration.
Property Ministry: Shingling of the Parsonage beginning at noon on Friday, September
6, and finishing on Saturday, September 7.
Education: Almost ready to begin the Education year. Needing 2 more teachers. Will
make an announcement in church on Sunday if necessary.
Congregational Care: Directories will be given out a week or two before the
centennial. The exact date will be placed in the bulletin.
Anita Ernst and Lois Van Diepen are helping to head up the meals ministry of FRC.
Discussed the policy of how transportation requests are being handled.

The joyous day finally arrived, when the entire congregation met for the last time in the old church building. It was a time of mixed emotions, the joy and the anticipation of worshipping in our new sanctuary for the
first time after months of planning and work, mingled
with the sorrow of leaving behind memories of weddings,
baptisms, as well as the every day meetings and events
shared with those we loved in this congregation. That
day we walked as a unit, led by our pastor and the consistory to the new church building for the Dedication service. The membership had risen to 130 families with 180
enrolled in Sunday School.
Later that year found volunteer labor dismantling
the old church building and an auction of the fixtures
and salvaged lumber was held. The next year the congregation celebrated the church's 60th anniversary.
