Cub Update
Summer Reading Bookworm Brunch: This event will be held on October 5th from 8:15—8:45 am in the cafeteria.
A list of students who qualify is attached. Students who turned in their summer reading logs will receive a token at
the brunch to buy a book at the book fair that costs $5 or less.
Student Council: 5th graders have the opportunity to provide leadership and service for our school by applying for
Student Council. Applications are available to ANY 5th grade student. The application states that safety guards
cannot be student council members but that decision was reversed. Applications are available in the school office
and are attached to this update. Approximately 20 students will be selected for student council based on an essay.
Applications are due October 1. No late applications will be accepted.
Spirit Wear: All spirit wear orders that were turned in by 9/11 should have been passed out to students on
9/25/15. If there are issues with orders, parents can reach out to Kim Fighter via email: kimfighter27@yahoo.com
Spirit orders turned in after 9/11/15 will come home beginning to mid October.
The spirit wear sale was successful this year! More details on sale totals will follow.
4th Annual Safety Fair: October 19th, 12:00—2:00 pm (11:00—12:00 for special needs families only) See attached

Dear Parents, This week your child’s teacher will be working with them on fire safety with some educational material we have given them. We ask you to take some time this week to educate and prepare your family at home with your child. There are several things you and your child can work on this week: 1.
Plan and discuss your escape routes out of your home. Show your child two ways out from every room in the house. Take time to fill out your escape plan! 2. Set up your meeting spot after escape from the home. 3. Discuss the importance of getting out fast and staying out. 4. This one may sound odd but, TEST YOUR FAMILY! At the cost of losing just a little sleep set off your smoke detector in the early morning to see how your family reacts and handles the situation. Do they remember what to do when they are just waking from sleep and are confused as to what’s happening? Until you actually practice with your family you will not know if they really know what to do. You may be surprised. You may potentially find out that the type of smoke detector you have will not wake your children. Studies have shown voice detectors are more effective at waking sleeping children. th
Please come have an amazing day of family fun at the 4 Annual Sylvania Twp. Fire Department Safety Festival being held on October 10th from 12 PM – 2 PM at the Sylvania Township Fire Station #4 (8210 Sylvania Ave). Allow your child to play fire fighter for a day! We will be having free lunch and fire helmets will be given to every child. The Imagination Station will be here as well as many fire trucks to climb through, fire gear to try on, fire hoses to spray, a large Live Fire Demonstration, Sparky the Fire Dog Mascot and Robot will be there, Kingston the Lion will be here, several bounce houses, the Safety Smoke House, Moe the Fire Clown will be here, a smoke detector give away, a parent safety information booth and several other fun activities. Child ID services will be available as well. This year we will attempt to make this process smoother and avoid long wait times as this has been a very popular item. We will also be awarding bicycles and bicycle helmets to children who have gone a step further to become fire safe. In the last three years we have given away over 46 bicycles! Bicycles are awarded only to Sylvania City/Township residents. *To be eligible for the bicycles please complete the escape plan grid provided or go to www.sparky.org and print one. Click on the ACTIVITIES tab first and then click on the ESCAPE PLAN GRID for instructions. After completing your escape plan your child should turn it in to their teachers. If your child wishes they may also drop it off at any one of Sylvania Township Fire Department’s 4 stations. We hope to see all of you soon! **** NEW THIS YEAR**** The doors to the 4th Annual Safety Festival will open at 11:00 AM for special needs children! We at the Sylvania Township Fire Department understand the needs of families with special children to be able to enjoy this activity and learn fire safety as well! Join us before the crowd gets bigger in a more relaxed atmosphere an hour before the doors open to the general public. “When it comes to smoke detectors, it’s about location, location, location. Put the Beep Where You Sleep.” (If your detector is older than 10 years old it should be replaced!)
