REGISTRATION BEGINS NOVEMBER 13 WINTER Studio Schedule 2014 Art Classes for Children, Teens, Adults & Families January 13 – March 31 The Armory’s unique education and exhibition programs encourage children and adults to experience, understand and appreciate contemporary art while being involved in the creative process of art making. Many of our Studio art classes visit the Gallery during the session and artworks in the exhibitions become sources of inspiration when creating art in class. Techniques and ideas used by the exhibiting artists are also learned in some classes. The Armory is committed to hiring dedicated and professional artist/educators with demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the developmental needs of individuals. It is our goal to provide a nurturing environment in which individuals are given the freedom to express themselves while receiving the necessary tools for creative growth. Each year the Armory brings the power of art into the lives of thousands of individuals through education and exhibition programming. Find out more on page 16. Tuesdays January 14 – March 18 Icy Art W14.4 10 – 11:30 am Students will look at cultures, places and artists who use winter-y materials to make art. They’ll create igloo sculptures, snow flake paintings, and winter wonderland dioramas. Ages 3-4 / Lindsay Kessner Storytime Lunch Bunch W14.5 Noon – 2 pm Students will read their favorite books and tell their own super stories. Then they’ll use clay, plaster, glitter, fabric and many materials to create exciting artworks inspired by the stories and characters. Don’t forget your lunch! Students will explore patterns of time, space and rhythm through creative movement and mixed-media art projects. We’ll use our wildest imaginations and lots of materials to create outlandish art that tickles the funny bone. Polkadots, penguins, elephants, astronauts, anything’s possible. We’ll read silly stories and poems to get us going. Ages 3-4 / Sandy Biery Painting Rainbows W14.2 4 – 5:30 pm Students will explore all the colors of the rainbow while making vibrant paintings, sculptures and more. They’ll use many materials to imagine how colors feel, look and maybe even taste. Ages 3-4 / Patricia Liverman Matisse’s Murals W14.3 4 – 5:30 pm Students will explore the French painter Henri Matisse and make murals, learning how to use bright colors, shapes, varied scale and collage techniques. From the moon and stars to animals who come out only at night, we’ll look at the many friendly parts of nighttime. Don’t forget your midnight snacks! Escape From the Zoo W14.15 Students will learn about lots of animals and where they live. They’ll paint zebra stripes and leopard spots, as they draw, paint and sculpt animals. Ages 5-6 / Elisa Salcedo Fridays January 17 – March 21 Ages 3-4 / Lindsay Kessner Sparkle, Glitter, Glow W14.10 4 – 5:30 pm Art for Two W14.702 10 – 11 am Students will create all kinds of bright and shiny paintings and objects using a variety of sparkling and reflective materials. They’ll learn about color and light while making beautiful eye-catching art. A class for toddlers (ages 22-36 months) and parents. Find out more on page 16. Ages 3-4 / Michelle Wiener From animals to secret agents, everyone needs a secret hideaway. Students will use many materials to create hidden spaces, maps and drawings to reach safety. They will imagine the stories behind their need for sudden getaways. Don’t forget your lunch! Clay Around the World W14.11 4 – 5:30 pm Students will look at the cultures and ways that people have used clay. From houses, dishes, and animal sculptures, to building roads, clay is important everywhere. They’ll make many clay creations inspired by the history and use of clay. Make art about the sea, the forests, the sky and the creatures that inhabit them, using traditional and recycled materials. Ages 3-4 / Lindsay Kessner 10 – 11:30 am Fake Food Feast W14.18 Students will blast off into outer space in rockets made from interesting materials. They’ll paint comets that glow in the dark, learn about stars and create mobiles of the planets. 4 – 5:30 pm Ages 3-4 / Ruby Osorio Art & Music Lunch Bunch W14.13 Noon – 2 pm Students will learn to make sounds with their bodies: clapping, stomping, singing, dancing. They’ll make instruments and create songs inspired by drawings, paintings and sculptures. Don’t forget your lunch! Ages 3-4 / Anna Huff What’s your favorite food? Would you like a giant cookie? A platter of Cheetos? Using many materials and art techniques, students will make their favorite foods and invent some new ones, such as a giant bowl of octo-granola bars. On the last day of class they’ll hold a “dinner party” installation to show off their banquet. Ages 5-6 / Sandra Gallegos 3 Classes for School Age Children Classes are designed to enhance skills, broaden concepts and provide an expanded creative experience. Various materials and historical art concepts are used to achieve greater technical ability and broaden knowledge. They’ll use many different techniques to make art with and about books. Some printmaking and collage skills will be introduced. Ages 6-8 / Anne McCaddon One Minute Movie W14.20 4 – 5:30 pm How quick can you tell a story? Students will be challenged to make a super short movie. They’ll write, perform, direct, design and film while being challenged to form ideas and express them in a short amount of time. They’ll also look at many examples of shorts including commercials, parodies, music videos and mini documentaries. Ages 7-9 / David Earle Fun with Drama- Silent Stage W14.21 4 – 5:30 pm This fun drama class emphasizes elements of physical comedy and universal gesture and expression. Students learn the basics of non-verbal communication and how to project this ancient art on the stage. Students will study silent film masters, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd and inspired by these master physical actors, they will create their own short theater scenes. Students will present their own live original silent theater scenes for family and friends on Monday, March 31. Ages 7-11 / Grace Lacques 3:45 – 5:15 pm Students will learn about transferring pictures, using printmaking and silkscreening. Learn quick and easy ways to print on paper, t-shirts, posters and other surfaces. Tuesdays January 14 – March 18 Comics & Cartoons & Characters W14.23 4 – 5:30 pm Students will create their own characters and comic books about themselves and the world around them. Using humor, jokes, real life situations and of course, superheroes, they'll learn the history and the style of comics and look at many artists inspired by traditional cartoons. Ages 6-8 / Kristofferson San Pablo Drawing & Painting W14.24 4 – 5:30 pm Students will learn the basics of drawing and painting. While experimenting with color theory and mixing paint, they’ll use various materials to paint with and paint on. Ages 7-9 / Elisa Salcedo Photography W14.25 4 – 5:30 pm Students will be introduced to the basic concepts of photography through making Rayograms and pinhole cameras. Using both science and imagination, students will discover how photography is an extension of themselves. Ages 9-11 / Allison Alford Wednesdays January 15 – March 19 Painting Places W14.26 4 – 5:30 pm Students will look at all types of landscapes, like the forest, the desert, icy glaciers, deep valleys and even the moon! Using many types of materials they’ll create paintings and painted sculpture inspired by the places they’ve seen and even imagined. Ages 6-8 / Lindsay Kessner 4 5 Fun with Drama W14.27 Ceramics W14.32 4 – 5:30 pm 4 – 5:30 pm Students will explore character, movement and theatrical expression through exercises and games. They’ll create backdrops and costumes, learn lines and bring a story or myth to life in a play for family and friends on Wednesday, March 19. Students will learn how to use the potter’s wheel as well as some handbuilding techniques to create functional and nonfunctional ceramic pieces. They’ll also explore various methods of glazing, surface texture and alternatives in firing. Ages 6-10 / Grace Lacques Ages 9-11 / Sara Simon Paper Sculpture W14.28 4 – 5:30 pm Students will explore the many possible forms to be made with paper. Using sheets and strips to create surprising three dimensional and flat sculptures, they’ll weave, make collages, build origami and use papier-mâché. Ages 7-9 / Rebecca Bennett Duke Drawing & Painting W14.29 4 – 5:30 pm Students will learn the basics of drawing and painting. While experimenting with color theory and mixing paint, they’ll use various materials to paint with and paint on. Ages 9-11 / Patricia Liverman Fridays January 17 – March 21 People, Portraits & Figures W14.33 4 – 5:30 pm Students will learn about portraiture and figurative art by looking at the many ways artists use different styles of painting, drawing, collage and sculpture to create people in art. Then they’ll use these ways to create their own art by the people, of the people, for the people. Ages 6-8 / Kristofferson San Pablo Ceramics W14.34 Thursdays January 16 – March 20 Myths & Magical Creatures W14.30 4 – 5:30 pm Students will explore legendary creatures from ancient civilizations and myths, like the Cyclops and Griffin. Students will learn how fact and fiction mix to become myths as they paint, sculpt and create stories and masks. Ages 6-8 / Elisa Saether Sculptacular W14.31 4 – 5:30 pm Using traditional sculpture materials such as clay, plaster and wood, students will make a series of abstract sculptural work and gain technical skills while practicing self-expression. Ages 7-9 / Jacob Yanes 6 4 – 5:30 pm Students will learn how to use the potter’s wheel as well as some handbuilding techniques to create functional and nonfunctional ceramic pieces. They’ll also explore various types of clay, learn methods of glazing and make different types of surface texture. Ages 7-9 / Michelle Wiener Epic Animation W14.35 4 – 5:30 pm Students will work as a team to create an epic seven minute animated movie. They’ll brainstorm a fantastical adventure, write a script, create elaborate sets using special effects in a variety of stop motion techniques including claymation, collage, drawing and real world video! Ages 8-11 / David Earle 7 ArtHigh for Middle School (ages 12 – 14) Classes for Middle School students are designed to provide in–depth experiences through sequential classes. Extended class time allows students and instructors to engage in more ambitious explorations of concepts, creative expression, historical and cultural context, connections, relations, applications and materials. Limited to twelve students, classes allow for more individualized instruction. Armory Art High studio classes are tuition–free during the school year. Ages 12-14 / Sara Simon Wednesdays January 15 – March 19 Stop Motion Animation W14.401 4 – 6 pm Students will be introduced to the A-Z of stop motion animation including techniques using claymation, cut paper, collage, drawing and pixilation. Experiment using early methods to animate images such as zoetropes and flip books. We’ll look at the history of the art and artists who use old school animation while we animate for the sheer fun of it. Ages 12-14 / David Earle Thursdays January 16 – March 20 Drawing & Painting W14.402 4 – 6 pm Students will learn drawing and painting concepts through viewing slides of contemporary and traditional paintings. Emphasis will be on exploration of composition, color, technique, subject and medium. They’ll use various drawing and painting materials. Students develop basic drawing and perceptual skills and begin creating an art portfolio. Instruction covers color and design principles, drawing from observation, and the vocabulary of art. Students will develop skills, creativity, and aesthetic sensibilities, which aid in establishing a foundation for all visual art pursuits. Fridays January 17 – March 21 Photography W14.403 4 – 6 pm Students will gain a basic understanding of black and white photography. They’ll explore different types of photographic techniques, use of cameras, processing black and white film and darkroom use. Continuing students will have an opportunity to further focus on building their technical and compositional skills. Cameras and supplies will be provided. Ages 12-14 / Michelle Glass Ages 12-14 / Tracy Nakayama 9 ArtHigh for High School (ages 15 – 18) Art High at the Armory offers various opportunities for high school students to gain valuable art experiences. Instruction concentration is in two areas: visual arts and media arts. Depending on student needs and level of exposure, these opportunities include: Armory Art High classes, Armory partner classes, Armory adult classes in painting, drawing, ceramics, digital art and more; and the introduction of our portfolio lab for school students. Students work with professional artists in various disciplines who are experts in bringing their experience into the classroom. Classes take place at the Armory’s main location, satellite locations and community partner sites. Armory Art High studio classes are tuition – free during the school year. Students will gain foundation knowledge about ceramics including building, sculpting and surface decoration. Ages 15-18 / Sara Simon Thursdays January 16 – March 20 Digital Art W14.602 4 – 6 pm Students will create art using computer technology. Workshops include simple drawing and cartooning using Adobe Illustrator to more complex workshops using Adobe Photoshop. The emphasis for the class will be on personal creativity and the use of computers to create a portfolio of expressive work. Students will learn to use digital cameras and scanners as well as Mac computers. Ages 15-18 / Joel Glassman Fridays January 17 – March 21 January 14 – March 18 Introduction to Filmmaking W14.600 4 – 6 pm Students will learn about moving images, understanding the process and production of digital video filmmaking. Students will learn how to shoot and edit a film, produce and package a DVD, create a poster for film promotion and set-up a website. Students will produce a film short. Film approaches will include narrative, experimental music video and animation. Final film packaging will introduce shooting and manipulating images using Photoshop, creating graphic layouts and texts for a movie poster, DVD case and website. This class will present a history of film, video and animation including web art. Ages 15-18 / Jay Lizo Printmaking W14.603 4 – 6 pm Students will learn to explore printmaking techniques that they can use at home but will also learn techniques utilizing the Armory's etching press. A variety of printmaking techniques will be explored,such as wood block textile printing, stencil silkscreening, reduction linoleum cuts, cyanotypes and solar etching prints. Projects will explore printmaking on both fabric and paper. A great way to get started making multiples to sell, or to use as gifts. Ages 15-18 / Melissa Manfull Saturdays January 18- March 22 Photography W14.604 11 am – 1 pm Students will gain a basic understanding of black and white photography. They’ll explore different types of photographic techniques, use of cameras, processing black and white film and darkroom use. They’ll learn drawing skills from simple sketches to finished works. They’ll develop drawing techniques such as how to create space, value, form and composition. Painting skills taught will include color mixing, mark making, canvas stretching, and conceptual aspects such as gaining experience in developing compositions. Armory classes offer adults a creative environment for their artistic needs. Develop new skills and find hidden talents. Students will learn how to express themselves further through the use of glazes and various forms of surface decoration. Both high fire and low fire clay will be used. This class was inspired by a bunch of friends and now it’s a Studio tradition, so bring a friend or make a new one; this class is open for all! The class includes print specific techniques such as layered process colors, surface embellishment, choosing paper and printing on handmade papers. Students will use experimental methods to create unique prints that incorporate photography. Please bring an image of your choice to the first session. Running Mac OS Lion and Adobe Photoshop C6 this class will cover all of the basics in beginning photoshop. Whether you are simply looking to learn the fundamentals of editing your digital images or wanting to acquire the necessary entry level job skills, this class offers you a solid foundation. Areas covered are the use of the special effect filters, type and font design, compilation and manipulating of scanned images, working in multiple layers, retouching damaged images and much more. The class is set up to facilitate multiple learning styles and levels. This is a great foundation class for all! Over the past century we have seen great technological advances from images on film to digital images. How does this change in technology influence artists’ ideas and art work? We’re familiar with the digital image so we’ll rediscover the magical and alchemical beauty of black and white beginning in the dark room. This class will offer an introduction to basic technical skills of black and white photography, camera operations, film developing with an emphasis on the darkroom-made print. RIE Parenting @ Armory RIE Parent-Infant Guidance Classes provide the opportunity for small groups of parents and like-aged babies and toddlers to get to know one another in a playful, supportive and interesting learning environment that encourages creativity, natural movement, authenticity and friendship. Groups are ongoing and ideally remain together until the toddlers are all two or two-and-a-half. RIE classes are currently being offered at the Armory Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Senior Armory members receive a 20% discount on their adult class tuition. • Tuition assistance is awarded based on income level and the availability of funds. See page 21 for details. When using tuition assistance, you must present an award letter to use funds for registration. Tuition assistance will not be credited retroactively. Registration Information • Register for classes by mail, fax, in person, or online starting November 13, 2013. No registration can be accepted by phone or email. • On-line registration will begin at 10 am on November 13, 2013. • Please mail in your registration with a check or credit card number. Faxed registrations can only be accepted when paying with a Mastercard or Visa. In all cases a signed registration form is required by the first day of class. • Registration forms will be processed in the order they are received. • Please have all forms completely filled out and signed. In case of a full class, be sure to have 1st and 2nd choices indicated on your form. • Class spaces are held only for registrants who have paid in full. • The Armory accepts payment in cash, check, Mastercard and Visa. No refunds will be granted after the second class. • No refunds for Art High registrations. 18 • Classes with insufficient enrollment will be canceled. If the Armory cancels a class before the first meeting, a full refund or credit will be issued. Allow up to two billing cycles for refunds to appear on credit card statements and up to four weeks for refund checks to be issued. • When making a change to a class a student is already enrolled in, we will charge a $15 fee for schedule adjustments. All changes must be submitted in writing, either in person, by fax, or via email.
