August 2015 Newsletter - Northern Virginia IPMS
2013 Chapter of the Year; IPMS USA and Region 2 www.novaipms.org August 2015 Newsletter Editor: Tom Henderson The IPMS Northern Virginia Modelers monthly meeting took place on 1 July 2015 at Fairfax High School. Approximately 50 members attended with 30 models entered into the monthly contest. Following the business portion of the meeting, Jim Burridge treated the chapter to a great presentation on modeling the 1962 Berlin Crisis aircraft. Then for several chapter members it was off to the IPMS National Convention in Columbus, OH. The number of models was mind boggling - 2,450 total. As far as I could tell, the convention was very well run. There were a couple of minor hiccups, lighting in the contest room being one, but overall I feel safe in saying those who were fortunate enough to attend had a tremendous time. There were plenty of vendors present to lighten our wallets. Many of us spent some “calm down and catch your breath” evenings off of the convention floor by making the pilgrimage to Schmidt’s German Sausage House, and other places like the Hofbrauhouse, new since our last visit to Columbus. A four page photo collage starts on page 10. They are only a fraction of the pictures Tim and I brought home. IPMS NoVA members brought plaques home from the convention. Congratulations to Mike Fleckenstein, Andrew Do, Alexander Do, Alex Bernardo and Sunil Gupta. Details showing the categories in which everyone placed follow this page. Just one week after the convention, the chapter conducted its second Udvar-Hazy display of the year. The Smithsonian Museum Udvar-Hazy Center hosted a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Family Day on 1 August. The morning of the display chapter president Tim Barb and I had some concerns over how good a display we would have. Mike Neyland bowed out for the silly reason he was expecting the birth of his first grand child at any moment, while Mike Fleckenstein and Aris Pappas picked up the same bug at the national convention and were under the weather. As it turned out there was no need to worry. While Tim and I brought a few extra models to increase the count, Tom Dunbar showed up with a stunning (yeah, I know, I have been reading too many Brit modeling mags) collection of mostly 1/48, mostly 50s silvery, shiny, colorful jets. Ben Kavanaugh from the Baltimore chapter joined us with a beautiful collection of 1/72 WWII aircraft. Once again, thousands of people saw our hobby. Who knows how many seeds may have been planted to begin, or rejoin, our hobby. There were a large number of Marines among the museum visitors. The reason so many Marines were there was because the coolest part of the day involved the PHROG. We were able to watch the veteran USMC CH-46 helicopter make its last flight as the Marines delivered it to the museum. The PHROG flew over the museum in a fly-by with its successor, the MV-22 Osprey, then both landed on the ramp. The Osprey was in VIP markings, providing an excellent photo opportunity for anyone wishing to build one in a color other than gray. The Marines are loaning the CH-46 to the Smithsonian pending construction of its new home at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Quantico VA. I understand it is already on display.
