club newsletter? - San Francisco Bay Weimaraner Club
SILVER EXPRESS MAY, JUNE, JULY, 2016 This is a three month edition of the Newsletter due to too much going on and a computer crash slowing things down! The editor lost everything on her computer so we are hoping you can help rebuild the files by sending items for the newsletter…..Brags, ideas, pictures, articles, comments, videos, whatever would be of general interest to the Weimaraner folks. Send to windwalker@powernet.net which is once again a safe working e-mail address. Thanks to all of you folks who renewed your membership in San Francisco Bay Weimaraner Club. If you have any ideas, requests or suggestions for our club, please contact Dan McDermott at dmcderm99@gmail.com. The April 24th Snake Avoidance Training by “Get Rattled” had a steady stream of dogs learning that snakes were not fun. There was even coverage by the local news media. We noted an interesting comment concerning Mackey who participated in last years training. “The Rattlesnake Avoidance Training Mackey had as a pup paid off when we were jogging on a trail and happened to jog past a rattlesnake that was in the shade. Mackey saw it and immediately backed far away as it began to rattle. No one was bitten“! If you hike with your Weimaraner, we would recommend this training. Our Field training day May 1 was helpful for those folks who participated in the Weimaraner Club of America Shooting and Retrieving Rating Tests on May 7 at Hastings Island. Even though the weather brought some rain, everyone had a good time and the dogs did not seem to mind. Leia was “Clean up dog” in the water retrieve performing 7 blind retrieves bringing birds in. Bruce says if Leia would only WAIT in the circle for him to release her, she would have her Retrieving Dog Excellent title! We thankthe following people for their efforts in making it a very successful day Debbie Gross - Ratings Test Chairman & hospitality Bruce Gross - WCA Representative & field set up Dan McDermott - Ratings Test Secretary, Gunner & bird planter Jay Wyman & Martha Zimet - Judges Connor McDermott - Gunner and bird planter Bill Bray - Field set up Joe Murphy - bird thrower and boat operator Rich Freeman – Bird Thrower Vanessa Freeman – Food SHOOTING & RETRIEVING DOG WCA RATING TEST RESULTS – May 7, 2016 NEW TITLE CALL NAME OWNER SDX, RDX Hunter Carman Spencer SDX Daisy Mae Sandra Sue Mocco SD Windi NSD, NRD NSD NSD NSD NSD NSD NSD NSD NSD NSD Piper Willie Deuce Anna Tucker Margie Wiley Sterling Madison Cosmo DOG’S NAME Regan’s Spring Loaded SDX RDX Int.Com.CH Rockville’s Orange Flame SDX BN RE SH OAP AJP NFP RATM CGC, NW SDS-A Bruce & Debbie Gross CH Rockville’s Tara of Twelve Oaks SD CDX BN GN RA JH RATN NSD NRD VX Jessica & Randy Hanson Hanson’s Winsome Piper NSD NRD JH Robbie McAlexander CH Rockville’s Willie Mac NSD Jessica & Randy Hanson Hanson’s Deuce of Hearts NSD JH Jessica & Randy Hansen Hanson’s to Melt a Frozen Heart NSD JH Kathleen Schostak Tucker Schostak NSD Kathleen & Bill Bray Int.Com.CH Bray’s My Little Margie Come Runnin NSD CD RATN Jessica & Randy Hanson Brooksburg’s Right as Rain NSD Matthew & Natalie Hobbs Rockville’s Splash Hit NSD Bruce & Debbie Gross CH Rockville’s Silver Day on the Mound NSD JH RATN Jessica & Randy Hanson Cosmo Von Hanson NSD JH On that same weekend, the Vizsla Club of Northern California was also holding an AKC Hunt Test in an adjacent field so some of the dogs were able to run. WeimaMama1970@verizon.net or 201-220-2809 Weimaraner Foundation Fund Changes The Weimaraner Foundation Fund (WFF) was established in Sept of 1974. The organization has never been incorporated. So last summer the trustees made the decision to incorporate. The incorporation limits the liability for the trustees and standardizes the operations of the WFF by adhering to corporate bylaws. The newly incorporated WFF had to renew the 501(c)3 status with IRS and that has been approved. The incorporation process was handled by a tax attorney. During the incorporation process we asked the tax attorney to review the funding allocations and donation processes. Two funding processes were found not to be incompliance with IRS regulations. AKC judges’ education seminars are not in compliance as the seminars are not open to the public and attendees gain financial compensation for knowledge learned and applied. Funding the derby stipend for the 1st and 2nd place derby winners at national field trial is also an activity that is not in compliance. Animal training is not considered a charitable activity by the IRS except for search & rescue training which benefits the general public. The WFF remains an educational and scientific health research organization with the purpose of educating the public about the Weimaraner Canine breed; supporting rescue organizations as prevention to animal cruelty; and funding scientific and health research organizations. Our funds are Rescue, Health, Education and the Birddog Museum. Please visit our web site at http://www.weimaranerfoundationfund.org for more details on the funds and to make an online donation. The trustees invite you to support the fund of your choice. Getting those unique pictures of your Weimaraner can be a challenge. Thank goodness for the delete button on my camera! A good picture can be a lucky shot – or the result of some planning. It’s also having your camera ready when a good shot is available. Lighting: Avoid using a flash which can spook your dog. It can also cause those “ghost eyes”! Direct sunlight can cause harsh shadows. Try not to shoot “into the sun”. Indoors - Find a spot that gets soft, natural, indirect light . Outdoors - look for an overcast day to provide the best lighting. If the sun is bright, look for a shady spot. Time of day that’s best – early morning or several hours before sunset. Look for interesting light patterns on the Weimaraner silver coat. Background: Find an uncluttered spot. You don’t want to wonder what that is in the background! Coloring – our Weimaraners are basic grey so blend in well with most colors. Light against dark also gives a good contrast. Decorative blankets, beds, furniture all work well. Outside, look for open spaces, a grassy field or lake is good. Also, our Weimaraners look good with flowers! Getting Ready: Work off some energy with play or a walk. Wait several hours after your dog eats. Posing: Use food treats, clicker or squeaky toy to get attention. Watch the photographer at the dog show – he throws the toy at the right time to get the expression he wants. Toss a piece of food for your dog to eat and when he looks up, there is your expression. A squeaker hidden in your hand will also give you that curiosity look. Look for the “unusual”. Your Position: Get down at your dog’s level – kneel or hold the camera at hip or knee level. Try different angles & closeups – keep shooting. Editing: Sometimes a bit of editing will enhance a picture. Cropping takes out unwanted area and concentrates on the subject which improves your picture, particularly when the dog is working birds in the field. Lightening up a picture with shadows will help with definition but may fade the color. Experiment: Try different things – if you get one good picture out of an hour’s work, it is worth your time and effort. Or, that lucky shot may just happen! PROTECTING YOUR DOG AGAINST FOXTAILS. These nasty little grass seed awns grow throughout the West and if inhaled or poked into our dogs in any area, can cause all kinds of problems, even death. Their seed heads grow in such a way that once attached, they cannot be backed out. Intense sneezing or head shaking or licking an area is a signal for inspection and a probable trip to the vet as they can get into noses, ears, eyes, mouth, any body opening, between the toes, into the lungs, under the skin, and they can migrate once in the body to other areas, with the end result being an abcess, massive internal infection and worse. The dog’s body is incapable of degrading or decomposing foxtails and their barb can only move forward. There is a new product out called “OUTFOX”, which basically is a hood which keeps the foxtail away from the head area. If your dog frequents grassy areas this is a great means of protection. It is also a good deterrent for dogs who like to mouth rocks and other things. The dog does not seem to mind wearing the protection. For more information, go to their website at http://www.outfoxfordogs.com LEIA LOVES THE OCEAN: Bruce and Debbie Gross took their dogs down to the beach while at the dog shows in Ventura. Leia was absolutely thrilled with swimming in the ocean. She is a surfer and told Bruce that she wants to live at the beach! Now that is the way to spend the hot Summer! TANK HELPS HIMSELF! Joe Murphy was wondering why Tank’s water bowl was always full…..until it was discovered that Tank had taught himself how to get water out of the refrigerator dispenser!
