AUGUST 2014 EXTENSIONS President’s Message INSIDE THIS2014 ISSUE August ............... President’s Message ~ VADA-CH July Meeting Minutes ~ 32nd Anniversary - CBLM ~ 2014 Award Standings ~ Barefoot Trimming Clinic ~ Chapter Challenge Show ~ Equine Anatomy Clinic ~ George Williams Clinic ~ VADA July Meeting Minutes ~ Commonwealth Park Renovates ~ Schooling Shows ~ 2014 Event Calendar ~ Classifieds VADA ~ of CHARLOTTESVILLE, INC. I am only talking about the licensed show this letter. I am so excited that it is almost here at the beautiful revamped Culpeper show grounds. I hope all of you have had an opportunity to look at the pictures of the show facilities we posted on our web site. I hope that if you are not showing that you will contact Gardy Bloemers at gardy@gardybloemers.com and offer to volunteer at the show. If many people offer and do some work then there is not a lot of burden on any one person. Plus, if you are at the show on Saturday we are having a competitor/volunteer barbeque. We asked some of our younger members to come up with the party idea and planning and we are looking forward to seeing what they have for us. It will be on the new deck of the restaurant building. If you are showing - have a great time and do well! Do be careful when driving around the new barns, however, as the overhangs are fairly low all the way around the buildings and it is not that hard to run into the buildings with your trailer. You can do a lot of damage to your trailer, so take a wide berth around the edges. See you at Culpeper. Hoof Guided Method Barefoot Trimming Clinic With Maureen Tierney August 16, 2014 – 9:00 am – 5:00 pm The Hoof Guided Method offers a unique method of barefoot trimming based on reading the hoof. A truly less is more approach, the Hoof Guided Method is based on the theory that a barefoot trim should mimic - or simulate - the action of the ground on the hoof, and that the true purpose of the trim is to stimulate the foot to grow healthy. You will learn what to trim and what to leave alone in order to allow nature to quickly transform the hoof. Agenda: Lecture and PowerPoint Presentation with Q & A. Trimming - demonstrated on five horses with Q & A. More Q & A to end the day. Participants are urged to bring photos of their horses’ feet for specific questions. (See photo instructions at http://www.barefoottrimming.com/index.php/trimming-services-courses-andclinics/services/photo-instructions). Maureen will be available after the clinic to trim a limited number of participant’s horses for $30 each. Maureen Tierney has been a horse lover since birth and a natural barefoot trimmer since 2001. In 2005 she founded, and continues to operate, For the Horse Equine Rescue, a 501©3 non-profit. AUGUST 2014 NEWSLETTER The VADA Chapter Challenge Schooling Show - It’s Back! The VADA Chapter Challenge Schooling Show is making a return appearance on Saturday, August 23rd, and this year’s venue is really exciting – the Wiley Arena (the large outdoor grandstand) at the Virginia Horse Center! Here is a chance to ride in a really nice show venue, while representing your VADA chapter. It doesn’t get much better than that. If you are a member of a local dressage chapter, then you are automatically a member of VADA. Remember – unlike say the Region I Youth Team show, this show does not require you to enter as a team, so there is no need to round up folks to enter with you. This schooling show is open to all VADA members, and all you need to do is decide what tests you want to ride, fill out the entry form and indicate what VADA chapter you are riding for. All USEF/DF dressage tests are offered, and other tests such as MFS, western & gaited dressage will be available as well. Each class will be individually pinned through 6th place. Then, individual scores will be used to determine which VADA chapter reigns supreme. Bragging rights go to the winner, along with special awards to the top six placing chapters. If your chapter does not have enough riders entered to compete in the Chapter Challenge part of the show, you can still enter and be part of a VADA mixed chapter team. In addition, each chapter is sponsoring a “special award”, high score rider over 50 yrs old, “blind us with your bling”, oldest horse, high score Thoroughbred and many others, see prize list. This show is a great opportunity for anyone who has always wanted to show in one of the premier rings at the Virginia Horse Center, but may not want to enter a licensed show there, or anyone who wants the opportunity to school in Wiley before the Fall Championships. And, since the plan is to hold this show every year, and rotate it throughout the state, it will be some time before this opportunity presents itself again. 7 Chapter Challenge Schooling Show LOCATION: Virginia Horse Center, 487 Maury River Rd. Lexington, VA 24450 Wyllie Arena Show Date: August 23, 2014 Closing Date: August 9, 2014 Manager: Meredith McGrath 540-745-3976 accof2@swva.net Secretary: Alison Douglas 11909 Halcyon Way Prince George, VA 23875 804-541-6295 Phone # to reach manager, Meredith McGrath, on the day of the show: 540-320-1563 Judge: Margaret Little “r” Suffolk, VA. The entry form is on the VADA web site: www.vadasschallenge.info Show details: This show is open only to VADA members and all VADA members are eligible to ride in individual classes, regardless of whether their chapter is participating in the chapter challenge. Tests offered: Intro through Grand Prix, to count individually and for chapter challenge scores. Riders Tests, Western Dressage, Gaited Dressage and all levels of MFS are also offered BUT WILL NOT COUNT TOWARD CHAPTER CHALLENGE SCORES. (riders must bring their own boom box.) VADA reserves the right to limit riders to 2 tests per horse and a total of 2 horses, in the event that the show fills. VADA will consider adding a second judge and ring if entries warrant. Chapter Challenge: In addition to the individual class placings, there will be a chapter challenge using the scores from the individual classes, except that Rider Tests, Western Dressage, Gaited Dressage and MFS scores will not be used for purposes of the chapter challenge. Each person entering the show will be asked to designate the chapter he/she is riding for on their entry form (may be the chapter of either the rider or the horse’s owner, if different.) If a rider is member of more than 1 chapter, he/she must designate one chapter that they are riding for; riders cannot split their rides among chapters unless they are riding 2 horses, in which case, each horse’s scores can be credited to a different chapter. To be eligible to participate in the chapter challenge, a chapter must have a minimum of 3 riders (can either be riding 1 or 2 tests each.) At least 1 of the 3 riders must show at or above 1st level, and no more than 1 out of every 3 tests per chapter can be at Intro. If there are more Intro riders entering than are allowed, members riding for the chapter will be decided based upon the date their entry was received. f a chapter has less than the minimum number of riders, too many Intro riders or riders not showing at the required levels, the chapters will be combined to form a VADA mixed team. f there are more Intro riders than allowed for a particular chapter, including the VADA mixed teams, these riders can enter and compete as individuals, but will not be representatives of their chapter for purposes of the chapter challenge placings. To determine Final chapter placings, scores of all designated chapter riders will be added together and divided by the number of rides to determine the chapter average. MFS, Rider Tests, Western Dressage and Gaited Dressage scores will not be used for purposes of the chapter challenge. Fees: Classes: $30.00 Late Entry Fee: $10.00 Stalls: $30 per stall, per day (Fri night & Sat or Sat only).
