What an easy way to keep kids occupied and decorate the house! Sari and her cousin Ryan found old rolls of crepe paper and decided to get the house all ready for Sari’s daddy’s birthday. I happened to have a bunch of colors of crepe paper in a drawer and forgot all about it. They not only wrapped crepe around the stairway (no tape necessary, tie wherever you can), they striped the floor (still no tape), decorated the chairs and twirled it from place to place. The house looked “lovely” and, what’s great, is that this inexpensive bit of KIDFUN is re-usable. When they were done, we made a game of rolling up the crepe paper and back in the drawer it went for another dull day when some KIDFUN will brighten the mood! While we always hope our pages are inspirational, this month we’re featuring South Jersey locations to throw your kids a perfect birthday extravaganza (page 15). Birthdays are meant to be a joy, but with busy lives for todays super moms make the day hassle free and hand over the details to enjoy the day with family and friends. Be sure to see what our very own South Jersey MOMs have to say about their next birthday party (page 4). And, need I remind you…the clock is ticking to find the right camp for your kids this summer. This month be sure to check out “8 Reasons Why Your kid Needs Camp”, (page 22). There are so many positive reasons to send your kids to camp, but the way I see it, resilience is the best skill for kids to obtain. Jess Michaels, Director of Communications at the NJ and NY divisions of the American Camp Association says, “It is important for children to develop resilience for coping with the obstacles and stresses that inevitably will happen in their lives. At camp, children are often problem solving, adapting to change, and building confidence. These are all tools that help children to cope with hurdles they may encounter and therefore build resiliency.” I love this concept! In addition to Editor of South Jersey MOM, I am also a licensed psychotherapist and work with youth through adults that need problem solving skills. So often, kids are isolated in the summer on social media instead of navigating social situations in person. Attending Summer Camp allows kids of all ages to connect, navigate and make autonomous decisions every day. This month is National Nutrition Month and be sure to look for Erin Taylor’s column (page 8) on how important it is to help create healthy eating and exercise habits with your kids. Today’s generation spend so much time with a device in their hand instead of a ball. I challenge you this month to play with your kids outside: take a walk, play soccer, throw a football, ride a skateboard and draw on the pavement with chalk. Be adventurous! The possibilities are endless.✲ Your friend & fellow MOM, Karen Ognibene karen@superiorgx.com Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram for great South Jersey MOM giveaways! on the Cover Alex is in the 8th grade at Haddonfield Middle School where he is a Peer Leader and plays on their basketball team. Mindfulness meditation takes this sound advice a step further. Mindfulness meditation is the practice of focusing our attention on our breathing to help train our brains to be fully present in each moment and to be in touch with our experiences in a non-judgmental way. It is about cultivating an awareness of our emotions - responding rather than reacting. Mindfulness meditation teaches kids to pause so that they can assess what they need and how they feel at that point in time. For instance, rather than freaking out over the mountain of homework due the next day, mindfulness can help kids calmly focus their attention on the particular assignment in front of them without stressing about what else they have hanging over them. 6 | March 2016 Lori Posner, a licensed family therapist from Cherry Hill, admits that most kids are skeptical when she first suggests mindfulness meditation. Posner responds with, “You cannot stop the waves, but what if you could learn to surf?” She helps kids recognize that they are stressed or that their emotions are out of control. When they reach this stage, they are motivated to find a way to change things. “You have to get them to buy into it,” Posner says. “They need a good reason to give it a try.” With younger children, Posner uses a “breathing buddy” to guide meditation. She rests a small stuffed animal on the child’s tummy. The child is able to focus on their breathing while watching the toy rise and fall with each inhalation and exhalation. Whenever they feel anxious, they can pull out their breathing buddy. Adolescents can be harder to persuade to give mindfulness meditation a try. However, the science behind how it can re-wire the brain and change thought patterns is persuasive. Once teens recognize the impact obsessive negative thinking can have on their feelings and resulting actions, they may be more inclined toward mindfulness. Mindfulness meditation can help them become more self-aware. Studies show that mindfulness meditation can improve concentration and test scores, decrease anxiety and stress, increase empathy and help develop coping skills. There are smartphone apps available for mindfulness meditation. Posner recommends Stop, Breathe and Think. This app not only explains the basics of meditation and what you can expect, but also how meditation works. Users can take the emotions survey then choose from a variety of targeted guided meditations. Here’s how to get started: • Choose a time to practice daily (start with 10-15 minutes.) • Sit in a quiet spot or meditate while walking or running. • Focus on each breath, on the sensation of air flowing in and out of your body. • As thoughts creep into your mind, acknowledge them without judgment. Let them go and re-focus your attention on your breathing. • Don’t berate yourself if you get antsy, or if you feel like you are doing it wrong. Mindfulness meditation is not about emptying your mind. It is about focusing your attention while recognizing that each interrupting thought is merely a diversion. • Keep practicing daily. It is exercise for the mind. The benefits will become apparent after about two weeks. “What could be more important than learning and practicing how to pay attention, how to be more present, and how to be more comfortable in one’s own skin, with one’s own thoughts and feelings and body?” asks Jon Kabat-Zinn, Professor of Medicine Emeritus and creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic, in the book, Sitting Still Like a Frog, by Eline Snel.✲ www.southjerseymom.com A BETTER TOMORROW COUNSELING SERVICES Anxiety • Depression • ADD/ADHD • Autism Spectrum • Oppositional Defiance • Grief and Loss • Post Partum Depression • Insomnia • Anger Management • We provide counseling services for children, adults, families, and couples in a positive therapeutic setting Most insurances accepted 856.266.4983 www.abettertomorrowcounselingservices.com 901 Route 168, Suite 103 Turnersville, NJ 08012 Brian Stemetzki, LCSW, NBCCH • Medical Grade Facials • Peels • Skin Care Consultations & Regimens • Laser Hair Removal • IPL Treatments • Cosmetic Tattooing (eyeliner, eyebrows, lips, nipple/areola complex) • ZO SkinHealth products • NeoCutis products Call for a consultation 856.362.8898 2950 College Dr #2h Vineland, NJ 08360 www.americansurgicalarts.com www.southjerseymom.com March 2016 | 7 Food As a Way to Connect to Our Children A s March is Nutrition Month, it is a good time to talk about kids and eating. Given that we know more about nutrition than ever before, this can be a tricky subject with many families. Parents feel the stress to get their children to eat healthily, but that positive desire can have unintended consequences, as parents and kids become locked in mealtime battles. Food should never be the subject of a battle between kids and their parents. Mealtime should be a time of connection, relaxation, trying new foods, and enjoying familiar ones. As parents, the best thing we can do is to do our best to eat a healthy diet (lean protein, fruit, vegetables, healthy fats, and less white, starchy foods) and model for our kids how to develop not only a good relationship with food, but a good relationship with our bodies. That means getting regular exercise, (the gym, walking, gardening or something else) and loving our bodies and not talking openly negative about our bodies. Our relationship with food is Erin Taylor, MA connected to so much more than simply what we put into our mouths. As parents, we can get caught up in trying to force our kids to live a healthy lifestyle, including having a healthy diet. It can stress us out. But it helps to remember that it is normal for kids to go through phases as they grow up where they only want to eat a small number of foods. These phases can really stress parents. As long as the child is continuing to grow and is healthy in all other areas, it is best to just relax through these phases and remember that most likely “this too shall pass.” Use food as a tool to connect with your children instead of battling them.✲ Erin Taylor, MA is a wife, therapist, parent coach, mom to four children ages 7, 9 and 12 and author of Connection and Kindness: The Key to Changing the World Through Parenting. This is a popular term used to describe someone holding the dual responsibility of caring for an elderly or ill parent, while simultaneously caring for their own children. Much has been said about the stressors associated with the demands of meeting the needs of family in this situation. Despite the stressors, there are ways that one can cope and approach the challenges of this circumstance. Here are 4 ideas to try if you are a member of “the Sandwich Generation:” Take good care of yourself FIRST: If you have traveled on a plane, you may recall hearing the flight instructions to follow in the event that the oxygen masks drop from above you. The instruction is to secure your own mask before assisting other passengers-even your children! The rationale for that instruction is true for other areas of our life. We must take care of ourselves before we can take care of others. The responsibility of caring for parents and children simultaneously requires you to be your best self, which means taking time to unwind, and engage in an activity that brings you pleasure. Commit to yourself that you will take at least one day per month to take good care of YOU! Create structure: You don’t have to be a Type A person to appreciate the benefits of a schedule. Creating some structure to your caregiving responsibilities is key to ensuring that your life feels less chaotic. Use Sunday evenings as time to write down all of the activities that you need to accomplish for yourself, your children and significant other, and your parents. Seeing everything written down will help you make sense of 10 | March 2016 what is a more immediate focus and help you to prioritize what needs to be done. Once you have set the list of priorities, schedule the days/times that you will accomplish these tasks. Try not to be too rigid, leaving some cushion time in case your plans are interrupted. Ask for help: This is so simple, but sometimes it is good to be reminded. There are numerous stressors and demands when you have to take care of your older or ailing parent, and your children. You may have various negative emotional responses to the experience. However, if you have other family members locally, or even close friends, make a commitment to yourself that at least once each month, you will ask someone to help you with your caregiving tasks. Try to keep in mind that your support people may not do the tasks exactly like you, but the goal is to give you the time to regroup or focus on other responsibilities. Accept that you will have good and bad days! Oftentimes, it is easier to notice the hectic parts of the day, the feelings of anxiety about the health of our parents, or the times when our child would not stop tantruming so you could finish helping your parent get dressed. However, try to take time each day or week to notice the parts of your hectic life that you are grateful for: the fact that your parents may be living with you and have a chance to interact with their grandchildren, or that you get to return the gift of caregiving to your parent, who at one point did the same for you. Find ways to see the benefit in your experience, while accepting that some days will be harder than other.✲ Dr. Kelly Moore is a licensed psychologist NJ License #5435 www.southjerseymom.com Celebrate your Child’s Birthday or Special Event... By Brie Latini B irthday parties for our children can be the highlight of the year! What more fun is there than watching your child celebrate his or her special day, surrounded by friends and family? The part that is not as much fun? Cleaning up the wreckage of your home after a full day of feting a five-year-old. Throwing a party outside of your home can be the solution to finding a way to party on without running the risk of too much party on your couch. Handing the reigns over to party professionals means that you have the chance to relax a bit during the festivities, and that you leave the mess behind when you pay the bill. Some venues will even provide the invites, paper goods, food and cake as part of the package! But, planning a party outside of the home still takes some work. w Start by considering your audience. If your guests will be very young children, then the rock climbing gym may not be a viable option. Think about the things your child likes to do, since he or she is the guest of honor, and then start looking for places that can show the kids a great time in a safe, friendly environment. w Even though the party mechanics are out of your hands, you can still personalize the celebration the same way you would at your home. Create handmade invites, customize the color scheme, and bring your own cake, balloons, music, etc. Just because you are not welcoming guests to your home doesn’t mean you can’t bring a bit of hominess to your party site. w Book well in advance- this is important advice! One of the downfalls of a party held at an outside venue is that it’s difficult to just throw one together at the last minute. The places that are good at what they do will book quickly. Be sure to leave a wide amount of time to ensure the ideal date! w Do your homework on the places you are considering. While you will never find a potential party site with 100% customer satisfaction, you can weigh the opinions of others with your own needs and expectations to get the best idea of who is best suited to meet those needs.✲ Brie Latini is a mom and writer from southern New Jersey. We celebrate triumphs and encourage our children to excel. As they continue on their journey, we use signs to measure growth and development. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises on four main areas of development that we follow: gross motor skills, fine motor skills, language/communications and social skills. 3 months you will see your child smile spontaneously. They will love to play and may cry when playtime stops. They may mimic your movements and facial expressions. They may begin to babble or copy sounds they hear. They are becoming more independent and may hold their head unsupported and push down on hard surfaces. Increased mobility at this age; includes the ability to roll over from tummy to back, or push up from their stomach to elbows. know 2 grow 6 months child recognizing faces, your baby loves to play with others, especially mom and dad. Your baby responds to other people’s emotions and often seems happy. Baby will show curiosity about things around them and try to get things that are out of reach. You will see some major strides in physical development. Baby will start to sit without support, may even begin to “army crawl” or roll over in both directions. 9 months your baby my start to become afraid of strangers. In contrast, they may become clingy with unfamiliar adults. And make sure you have their favorite blankly or toy as they develop favorites. Baby is also making strides in the communication with their hand and mouth; using fingers to point at things and making sounds like, “mama and baba. 12 months a baby shows major changes. They may imitate words their parents says. They will explore things in different ways; like shaking, banging or throwing. They will also start to use thing correctly like a cup to drink and comb to brush their hair. They can follow simple directions like, “pick up the toy.” www.southjerseymom.com know 2 grow Reaching for the Stars 18 months the dreaded temper tantrums begin. Your baby may play pretend, feeding a doll or changing diapers. They may cling to caregivers in new situations. Your baby is declaring their independence at this age; walking alone, walking up steps, pulling toys by walking. String several words together. Age 2 your child copies others, gets excited when with other children, shows defiant behavior, and plays beside other children but is starting to include other children. Speech grows as your child repeats words overheard in conversation and begins to utter 2-4 word phrases. Age 3 your toddler shows concern for a crying friend. Your 3 year old will demonstrate a wide range of emotions. They follow instructions and can name familiar things. They know all about them; age, name, sex. Now, even strangers can understand your 3-year old most of the time. They will carry on conversations in 2 to 3 sentences. According to Dr. Deborah Hung, M.D. of Advocare West Deptford Pediatrics while development is different with every child the best way to ensure normal development is being interactive and engaged with your baby/child. When to be Concerned: Parents should speak with their child’s doctor if they have concerns about delayed milestones. In some cases, the child may not actually be delayed but just may be progressing at his/her own pace, which could still be within the range of normal. If your child’s doctor confirms a delay in milestones, then the next step would be further evaluation by Early Intervention.✲ To make a referral to the NJEIS call the Statewide Toll Free Referral Number at: 888.653.4463. March 2016 | 21 summer camp guide 8 REASONS YOUR child NEEDS CAMP By Jess Michaels, Director of Communications American Camp Association, NY & NJ 5 6 7 A t camp, children have the opportunity to go sailing, swim, play sports and get to the top of the climbing wall. Children have the time of their life at camp while trying all these new activities but what many people don’t always realize is all the life skills children will gain at camp that help them grow to be successful adults in both their personal lives and in the workplace. Here is just a short list of the reasons that your child needs camp for their social education. 1 2 3 4 Independence -When children go to day or overnight camp, they are given the opportunity to grow more independent. Separation from parents gives a child the ability to think independently which builds self-esteem and confidence. Resilience – It is important for children to develop resilience for coping with the obstacles and stresses that inevitably will happen in their lives. At camp, children are often problem solving, adapting to change, and building confidence. These are all tools that help children to cope with hurdles they may encounter and therefore build resiliency. Sense of community- Children become part of a community at camp. They learn to share in camp traditions, work together, support each other, eat together and at overnight camp, live in bunks together. For the majority of campers, being at summer camp is the first time they have lived with or eaten every meal with a group of people other than their family. Confidence – Camp provides children with many opportunities to build confidence. American Camp Association research has found 22 | March 2016 8 that 92% of campers said that camp helped them feel good about themselves and 70% of parents reported that their child gained self-confidence at camp. When a child goes under water for the first time, swims across the pool or goes on the zip line after being apprehensive, children gain confidence by accomplishing something they didn’t think they could do. Leadership – There are many ways children gain leadership skills at camp. From teaching a new camper the camp songs to being a “big brother” or “big sister” to the youngest campers to being a captain for color war, children are learning to be leaders in their camp community which is a skill that will help them in their personal and professional lives as they get older. Break from technology – According to a Kaiser Family Foundation study, today’s children spend over 7.5 hours a day engaged in media. Excessive media consumption prevents children from taking part in hands on activities and socializing with other children. The majority of summer camps ban most technology, including TV, smart phones, ipads and computers Taking a break from technology over the summer allows children to focus on learning new skills and taking part in social interactions. New experiences – Each day, children are trying something new at camp. Whether it’s planting a vegetable in the organic garden, getting on a horse, learning how to do the front crawl, or learning how to serve in tennis, children are learning new skills and experiencing something different. Research by the American Camp Association shows that 63% of campers continue to participate in some of the new activities he or she learned at camp when they get home. Communication skills - Children at camp are constantly communicating with each other. There are no ipads or iphones for messaging, only one-on-one communication. Campers talk while in their bunk, at meals, on the sports fields, and while doing projects in arts & crafts. Today’s children need the camp environment more than ever to have true face to face conversations without the use of technology to communicate with each other. Thinking of sending your child to camp? The CoolSculpting fat reduction procedure is specially designed for those who have unwanted fat that resists diet and exercise. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the CoolSculpting procedure is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. It is, however, a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. Good candidates have noticeable bulges in certain areas, including under the chin, they’d like to get rid of. The price for CoolSculpting varies depending on your areas of concern, the number of sessions needed, and your ultimate goals. Create a customized treatment plan, in person, with Kate Meyers our CoolSculpting specialist, that’s tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget. The length of your CoolSculpting session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. Once your treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. www.southjerseymom.com business spotlight FREEZE Yourself HOT “The CoolSculpting fat reduction procedure is specially designed for those who have unwanted fat that resists diet and exercise” In the US, the CoolSculpting procedure is FDA-cleared for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the submental area (chin), thigh (inner and outer), abdomen, and flanks (love handles). As the #1 non-invasive fat reduction procedure with millions of CoolSculpting procedures performed worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment. During the procedure you may experience deep pulling, pinching, numbness or minimal discomfort. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, tingling, stinging, and mild pain. The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to all normal activities immediately after treatment. You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still continue to flush out fat cells for up to four to six months after treatment. CoolSculpting consultations with Kate are available by appointment Monday – Friday at our medical office in Sewell, NJ. All consultations are free of charge.✲ March 2016 | 29 very child has a gift. “EWe excel at helping to unwrap it.” Sometimes, itstartswithatwinkleintheeye.Justalittlesparkofcuriositythatsoonblossoms intoajourneyofdiscovery, learningandachievement. That’sbecauseatourprivatespecial educationschools, weseebeyondachild’sdisability, andawakenthejoyandcreative expressionwithin.
