Dear brethren, the great need of our churches is information in regard work of our denomination. This information can be obtained only to the We from our religious papers. recommend the Baptist Courier, published at Greenville, S. C, the Biblical Recorder, published at Raleigh, N". C, and Kind Words, published in Macon, Ga., as papers worthy of our patronage. believe that the heads of families especially, should take one religious paper and encourage their families to read them. In that way they will learn what the great Baptist brotherhood is doing all over our land, and moreover they will be stimulated to do more in every way for the cause of Christ. Those churches which read our papers will give most to the spread of the gospel. We A. M. Noble, C. L. Powell, M. CONERLY, J. Committee* REPORT ON PRAYER MEETINGS. The duty of prayer is plainly taught in the scriptures, and perhaps few Christian duties are more neglected. As a means to increase a growth in grace, it is indispensable. It cultivates a spirit of humble devotion and dependence on God, increasing faith and love, and fills the soul with joy and peace, and prepares us the better to endure the trials and perform the duties of life. " Restraining prayer we cease to fight, Prayer makes the Christian's armor bright. And Satan trembles The weakest saint when upon he sees, knees." his W. S. McCaskill, G. W. Hill, E. D. Johnson, Committee. REPORT ON EDUCATION. Your committee on Education report that it is our indispensable duty The masses should seek to to encourage education among the people. educate the rising generation that the young may be prepared to take the places of the old brethren when they are gone. Progress is the watchword of to day. Other sections are awakening to the great importance of education and so ought we. Especially should our young ministers be encouraged to seek all the knowledge within their reach. Where it is practicable we recommend that they attend school awhile, and better . Waccamaw . 9 Association. prepare themselves to preach the gospel and contend for the faith once delivered to the saints. Other denominations have educated ministers, and in order to keep pace with them we must educate We recommend the Ashpole Institute located in Robeson county, fifteen miles from Fair Bluff, as a suitable school for young men and ladies. Prof. Ivey is a whole-souled Baptist, and gives, free of cost, tuition to young ministers. He is now giving tuition to young Bro. J. O. Blanton We also of this Association, and he is making commendable progress. recommend Furman University in Greenville, S- C, and Wake Forest College in North Carolina, to those who wish to take a collegiate course. J. H. Blanton, C. L. Powell, E. D. Johnson, Committee. REPORT ON TEMPERANCE. Your committee report that our effort to reclaim a lost world, to mankind from that state of degradation and misery in which they raise have fallen by sin, to open the prison doors of habit and sinful indulgence and set the prisoner free, is an indispensable christian duty. When we take into consideration the wide spread and alarming evil of the use of alcoholic liquors as a beverage, the untold suffering and misery caused by it, and the thousands brought to fill a drunkard's grave and endure a drunkard's hell, Christianity weeps, and the church of Christ should blush when we consider the indifference and apathy manifested by professors of religion in regard to this great evil. would, therefore, urgently recommend that members of the church and of society in general, abandon the use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage, and use their influence, both by precept and example, to dis- We courage its use. Respectfully submitted, R. J. Long, Wm. Hughes, Wm. Boyd, Committee. REPORT ON MINISTERIAL QUALIFICATION AND SUPPORT. Your committee are of the opinion that the qualification of a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ is fully set forth in the Testament of our Lord and Saviour, both by precept and example; from which we understand that the prime qualification for a minister is the gift of the Holy Spirit in his own heart, who will enable him to make the sacrifice incident to ministerial life, that he may be consecrated to the work which God has assigned him. A.nd as the workman is worthy of his hire, we feel it our duty as churches and as individuals to support the ministry which He has ordained among i i us. Moses Prldgen, E. D. Johnson, W. D. Martin, Committee 10 Minutes of the KEPOKT OF COMMITTEE ON MINISTERIAL EXAMINATION. Your committee beg leave to report that we have had before us aspigospel ministry, Brethren A. B. Roe, H. C. Ammons, J. E. McCormick, G-. W. Harrelson, Stephen H. Thompson, A. W. Carter and A. G. Stocks. On a careful examination we do recommend the two first named brethren for ordination, when they shall be called to. the pastoral care of a church or churches. And while we are pleased with the Christian experience and talents for preaching the gospel of the other brethren, we do recommend that they continue in their present capacity for one more year. Respectfully submitted, A. M. Noble, rants to the J. W. Gore, W. S. McCaskill, Committee. REPORT ON SPECIAL CHANGES. Your committee beg to report, that from the gatherings, from church our hearts are saddened by the removal from our midst of so many during the past year. Thirty-one of our number have been called to pass over the cold Jordan of death, and while our hearts have been caused to bleed with sorrow, we do rejoice that our loss is their eternal gain. Respectfully submitted, letters, N.MlLEIKIN, N. White, A. Inzor, Committee. REPORT ON SUNDAY SCHOOLS. Your committee are pleased to report favorably. The cause seems to be engaging more of the attention of Christians generally than at any former period of our history. It is truly gratifying to report Sunday Schools in many of our churches, notwithstanding several have made no report. Your committee most earnestly recommend every church member to feel it his duty and high privilege to be a member of the Sunday School. Your committee also recommend the formation of a Sunday School Convention in this Association. Respectfully submitted, J. M. CONERLY, R. D. Best, R. J. Long, Committee. REPORT ON CORRESPONDENCE.
