2012 Annual Report Providing Community-Based Community-Based Residential Residential Services Services Providing to People People who who have have Developmental Developmental Disabilities Disabilities to Friends and Neighbors Jubilee Association Mission Jubilee Association of Maryland provides opportunities and support for people with developmental disabilities to live in and enrich their community while fulfilling their personal, family, and spiritual needs. The following core values inform the way Jubilee promotes itself, makes decisions, deals with people, and supports peoples’ needs: • Respect and human dignity. All those associated with Jubilee recognize the basic humanity of all people and treat them equally and with the utmost respect, regardless of their level of disability or role in relationship to the agency. • Self Determination. Jubilee subscribes to the philosophical concept of “self-determination”: that is, we believe all people have the right to control their lives and resources as much as possible. • Community, Mutuality, & Service. Staff and board work together, to promote an ideal of service so Jubilee can create a sense of community both within and outside the agency to enhance the lives of those we support. • Justice. Jubilee actively supports justice on behalf of the people we serve and is committed to serving people of diverse cultures, races, religions, and economic circumstances. • Ethical Practices. Jubilee has strong leadership that at all times operates with integrity, insists on quality and clear financial oversight, and bases its actions and open discussion on faith-based ethical principles. • Spiritual Care. Jubilee does its best to ensure that the spiritual needs of the people we serve, their families, and our staff are actively addressed. —Adopted by the Board of Directors on 5/11/09 Jubilee Association of Maryland is sponsored by the Hyattsville Mennonite Church and is guided by the teachings of the Christian Faith. He usually comes by bus, and is the first one to arrive. He unlocks the front doors and sets up furnishings used in worship. Martin is the head usher and he helps with any odd jobs that need to be done. The pastor has played a vital role in Martin’s support team, and he helped to connect Martin with Jubilee eight years ago. Martin has an intellectual disability and is deaf. Martin’s pastor felt he needed some supports to be successful in where and how he lived. The church agreed to continue to be a resource for sign language interpretation. “Jubilee is pleased with the life we have helped Martin Roth maintain and achieve. He is happy and supported, and always active, including working at Best Western for fourteen years.” -Tim Wiens As part of the Jubilee services, we are helping Martin to manage his small but very nice house in Rockville that he inherited when his mother passed away about two years ago. The house and grounds needed major work at the time that Martin inherited it. With some of the assets from his mother’s estate and with the help of Rebuilding Together, Jubilee helped Martin make significant improvements to the house. We also helped Martin select a housemate to live with him to pay rent and to provide some companionship. Martin’s neighbors are very friendly to him. One of them used to look after Martin when Mrs. Roth went to Japan to visit her family. They have enjoyed seeing Martin’s home getting a makeover, watching the process and project. They enjoy having him in the community. Charlie Swenson Charlie Swenson has been a regular at Hyattsville Mennonite Church (HMC) since he attended an Easter service with his counselor, Nate Hajdu, in 2004. People from the church know Charlie. One time, Charlie was at a Nationals game with his parents, and a family from the church saw him and said hi. Charlie’s parents didn’t know these people; they were Charlie’s church friends. Another time, Charlie ran into some church friends while at the airport with his family. Charlie is known at HMC. He is part of their community. “Charlie and his housemate Andre lit the peace lamp and met with the children during children’s time at the last Disability Awareness Sunday, teaching the children a lot about understanding and patience. We love having them attend our church.” -Becca Walawender Charlie has gotten to know his Wheaton neighbors too. He started his own business as a dog walker in his neighborhood with his job coach, Nat Caputi. Nat pushes Charlie’s wheelchair, Charlie holds the dog’s leash, and the three look like a “dog sled team without the snow.” The neighbors know and trust Charlie with their dogs, and the dogs and Charlie enjoy the company, exercise and fresh air. Charlie is an important part of his community, and he has built wonderful, meaningful relationships with his friends and neighbors. 4 | 2012 Annual Report | Jubilee Association of Maryland, Inc. Curtis Cooper Curtis Cooper has a smile that makes everyone he meets smile back. Curtis makes friends everywhere he goes: at his job, in his neighborhood, at stores and restaurants, and on his regular bike rides. Curtis rides his bike as often as he can, through Wheaton Regional Park, where he says hello to the park rangers and hikers, to Brookside Gardens, where he smells the roses, through Sligo Creek Park to visit his good friend, Pat, to Wheaton Library to visit his friend, Barbara, and then home again. “John Darvish is my friend. This year we celebrated our birthdays together. I also enjoyed his visit to my home at Christmas this year. His friendship means a lot to me. ” -Curtis Cooper Curtis has gotten to know many of his neighbors, after they saw him riding his bike, and sometimes he’ll visit with one of them for coffee, or another neighbor will help him with basic bike maintenance from time to time. Curtis says that he has really good neighbors, and he loves to socialize with them. Local shopkeepers know Curtis too. Elizabeth, his friend at the thrift store, holds on to books or CDs that she knows Curtis likes for his next visit to the shop. Mr. Jalal at McDonald’s remembers that Curtis likes four sugars in his coffee with his oatmeal, and Mulah and Rick at Dunkin’ Donuts are always very kind to Curtis when he stops by. Curtis enjoys his friends and neighbors. Stephanie Sugg Stephanie Sugg has always wanted to be independent, and to have a job and a social life, just like anyone else. With help from Jubilee, she was able to move into her own apartment this past summer. She is a pioneer – the first person with disabilities in the state of Maryland to try the computer monitoring system, Simply Home. This means that instead of a roommate, Stephanie can live on her own, and the system that can alert her caseworker and family if she needs help. “I like being in my own apartment, and I think it’s good for me to be in my own apartment. I feel like I’m doing really well.” -Stephanie Sugg St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Rockville, where she has attended services since she was a little girl, is a big part of Stephanie’s life. She’s a valued member there, ushering, and cleaning the church and keeping it in good shape for the hundreds of parishioners who come and go weekly. Another big part of Stephanie’s life is the pool. In strenuous practice sessions three times a week, she’s found camaraderie and friendship as a part of the master’s swim team in Olney. She’s participated in swim meets and even won some medals, as well as traveled for open-water swims. She’s always loved the water, but the best part for Stephanie is just being part of the team. One of six children, she likes to spend time with her sisters, brother and her nephews. She also feels secure knowing that her mother is only a few miles away. She sees her mother several times a week, but loves that for the first time in her life, she has her own place. Stephanie has built a great life in her community, surrounded by good neighbors and friends. 2012 Annual Report | Jubilee Association of Maryland, Inc. | 5 Jubilee Thanks All of Our 2012 Donors Churches and Religious Institutions Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.
