Here we are, July, children’s holidays are close, our own holiday closer and Stuart and I are glad to be taking a break from the routine of life which this year
seems even busier with all the ‘extra’s’ that have come along to celebrate and
remember. We hope to have another reason to celebrate later in the year as we
look forward to the installation of our new North aisle window commemorating
216 Parachute Signals serving in more recent areas of war.
Last month on the 14th, the anniversary of the ending of the Falklands War, two
serving officers from 216 came to Caythorpe to lay wreaths at the Falklands Memorial, a much quieter affair and one I was privileged to attend with them. I
heard once more the story of the Memorial stone’s chequered journey from the
Falklands to its final ‘resting place’ on our village green and I thank the Parish
Council for having the lettering on the stone renewed for this occasion, it was
much appreciated by the Squadron members.
I would love to know how much this Memorial stone weighs, a good deal more
than the stones or pebbles I pick up while we are on holiday or just on an away
day somewhere, somehow they help me to remember much more than where
they are from. A stone of similar shape, but so much smaller, is on my study
window now, picked up from the side of the A74 just outside Moffat and heading for Fort William on our first Scottish holiday the year after we were married.
What a shoestring holiday that was, but memorable for all the right reasons, no,
the weather wasn’t good, yes, we ran out of money on the last day, now when we
look back on it, God was definitely looking out for us and we gloried in the scenery around us that he had created.
Whilst we live in difficult times again all of us are blessed with simple but beautiful God created things, from the pictures drawn by our grandchildren to the
happy smiles of those enjoying Street parties and all the local celebrations for
our Queen’s Jubilee. I hope that some of these events and all the efforts made by
so many villagers are memories we have given the young to treasure and enjoy
in the years to come.
Even if you don’t enjoy the 2012 Olympics (there must be something in it you
will!) have lovely summer days, yours in faith and love,

Please be aware;
The regular service on the third Sunday of the month at Fulbeck St Nicholas has
changed to a user friendly Morning Prayer with hymns and an address given by a
member of the ministry team, this is to enable clergy in the Deanery whose resources are stretched, to be elsewhere. Similarly for the time being there is now
no 9am Said Communion on the first Sunday at Caythorpe St Vincent.
Coffee Mornings at Carlton Scroop – July 21st
We are continuing our monthly coffee mornings in the Village Hall on Newark
Lane from 10am until Noon, with a Raffle, Fair Trade stall and the usual Bring
and Buy, please watch out for posters and newsletters for details of these friendly
and enjoyable occasions.
‘Tea at Vinnies’ for a trial period volunteers at St Vincent’s church are serving
Afternoon Tea in church once during the month, the next will be on Friday 22nd
July at 3pm to which you are invited, there is no charge, however donations towards expenses will be welcomed. Our main aim is to provide a meeting place
and time to chat.
FRIDAY CLUB Children usually meet for their monthly gathering for songs,
stories and some creative activity on this date, but here we are in July, the children are on holiday from school and so Friday club also takes a break for summer. 21st September will be our first meeting back at St Vincent’s – 3.45pm.

We do welcome people who wish to do some photocopying at the Rectory. This is offered as a
facility to all people who live in the Benefice, and the “contributions” made (5p per copy) help to
keep the cost of maintenance of the machine down.

Bishop's letter for Parish Magazines: July 2012
The Olympic and Para-Olympic games are almost upon us. It will be an exciting time for
our nation and the world as thousands of athletes from all over the planet arrive on our
shores to test their skills in a wide range of sports against the best in their particular field.
We also might find ourselves becoming temporary experts in sports we have never seen
before – I remember really enjoying curling on the TV at one winter Olympics and learning a lot about the various techniques involved.
Sadly, it is also a dangerous time as, with the eyes of the world upon the United Kingdom, this would be a good time for a terrorist attack. We should pray for a safe Games.
My wife and I are going to one track and field event and we are already planning our
route to the stadium, probably by river and on foot, so we get there comfortably on time.
One thing I learned from the More than Gold website is that the original Greek Olympics
were preceded by a ‘Sacred Truce’, which allowed competitors to reach the stadium
without being attacked as they passed through the Greek peninsula. I am hoping for a
Sacred Truce this time as well – not just safety from terrorist attacks or a safe journey to
our event – but in a much broader sense.
Bringing young people together from almost every nation on the planet creatively and
enjoyably to engage in competitive sport is an example of how nations could relate to
each other, without the need for ancient enmities or violence. The Games are surrounded
by a hundred day vigil for peace in the world: peace between and within nations; peace
in our own hearts. Let us pray that this will be the true legacy of the 2012 Olympic and
Para-Olympic Games.

recognize, but no! I had some very interesting suggestions, but no-one spotted
that it was the junction of Church Lane with Old Lincoln Road. Then the road
markings gave Old Lincoln Road the priority. The finger post is still there.

CAYTHORPE AND DISTRICT WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
I was pleased to welcome members and guest Kate Davidson to our June meeting along with Sue Deavin who has been able to return after a short absence.
Our Quiz Evening last month made us a small profit of just over £100 which will
give our funds a much needed boost, thank you to all those who supported us.
Our speaker was the most delightful Mrs Betty Elmer to whom we could have
listened all night. She has a way of bringing facts to life through her wonderful
story telling; she arrived dressed as a typical housekeeper from Victorian times
and enabled us all to imagine what life “below stairs” at Belvoir Castle might
have been like. The housekeeper was the most important person employed there
and had a great deal of power over the other employees, controlled the household
budget, menus and even had a distillation room in which she would distil oils
etc. to keep the castle clean and people healthy. The present castle is occupied
by His Grace the Duke of Rutland, his wife the Duchess and their three daughters and two sons. It is the fourth castle on this site, the first being a Mott and
Bailey castle built around 1076, the second in the 1400’s was a “big fighting”
castle destroyed by Cromwell’s cannons and the third was a splendid castle built
in the late 1600’s. By 1799 John, the Duke at the time who was only 28 fell in
love with and married, Elizabeth, daughter of the Duke of Carlisle who wanted a
“fairy tale” castle with towers and turrets. She duly got one but by 1818 it was
destroyed by fire and was rebuilt by 1825 and that is the one we see today. Mrs
Elmer currently works for Gravity FM where she interviews people for documentaries, records it, writes a script and then chooses music to accompany it. It
was through this that she met the new Duchess who wanted to promote the Castle and went to interview her. They liked her so much they offered her a job
where she has now worked for ten years. Coach parties from all over the world
come to see the castle and the historic re-enactments in which she is involved.
Twenty of us have now booked to go and see the “Fields of Gold” flower festival
at Lincoln Cathedral on 16th August. Before that on the 9th, we are going to visit
Trentham Gardens and the Potteries, seats may be available on the coach (we
will know after our July meeting), so please contact me if you would be interested in joining us for the day.
The raffle was won this month by Caroline Long, Competition by Mary Giles
and Flower of the month by Pauline Dorey. Our July meeting is to be “Olde
Tyme Music Hall” being performed by some of our members and their husbands.
We are looking forward to dressing up for the part and are grateful for all their
hard work in preparing for this, it will be the first time they have attempted such
an event. We meet every 2nd Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in Caythorpe village hall and visitors are always welcome at a cost of £3 per visit.

CAYTHORPE & DISTRICT WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
60TH ANNIVERSARY 2013
In March or April of 1953 Mrs Arnold Gray, living at Caythorpe Hall, invited all ladies
of the parish to a meeting at her home with an interest in forming a Women’s Institute. It
was well attended and over ten ladies went on to become the founder members with its
official start date being May of that year.
I have found out who many of those founder members were, but not all. It is the intention of the current membership to produce a book to commemorate the occasion and we
are appealing for all villagers who can remember, either being an early member themselves, or having a mother, aunt or other relation that was. We would like to include in
our book, accounts of early memories (days out, memorable speakers, funny, unusual or
special events). We would like to know why ladies still living in the area stopped being
members, was it the cost or another reason?
We would be particularly interested in any photos you may have of your mum, aunt or
sister regardless of how old it is, especially if she was one of the founders (it can be
scanned into the computer and returned to you immediately). Also, any items you may
still have e.g. WI badges, craft items etc. that once belonged to them. Sadly, only one of
the founder members is still alive as far as I am aware – she was only seventeen when
she joined with her mother. Please help me to find out as much as I can about the WI’s
history in Caythorpe, for instance I do know that we were one of the custodian trustees of
the playing field on Old Lincoln Road, and that most of the other organisations also trustees, no longer exist.
We are hoping to have several events next year; a celebratory meal with entertainment,
an exhibition of how we were and how we are now (what has changed and what has not)
and show off our new tablecloth being produced with modern style ideas but using traditional methods. We want to show you what the 2013 WI is about and how its origins are
what makes it a success; being run by women for women.
If you can help in any way, however small, it will be so appreciated. I will be happy to
come and visit you for an “interview” if that will make things easier. Thank you

DIAMOND JUBILEE MUGS
I was only able to obtain a few extra Jubilee Commemorative Mugs. I underestimated the
number of children 16 and under in the Parish and the number of people who wanted to
buy them.
However, as far as I am ware all the young people were given a free Jubilee mug, which
was paid for, along with the Tuesday Street party disco, from the old Youth Club fund
and a person who wishes to remain anonymous.
All the mugs sold for £2.95 were sold at cost price.
I would like to add my appreciation to Neil Fritzsche and his group of helpers for making the Jubilee celebrations so enjoyable.
I cannot believe that at the Street Party I was dancing to Hi-Ho Silver Lining in the Fish
Shop Car park and jiving with the Revd June in the High Street to Status Quo.

Caythorpe Playing Field News
Well the Diamond Jubilee has passed and it has been a very busy time for all
involved with the playing field additionally we have run the casino night, the
Caythorpe Cantor and of course the Music Festival since our last article. All went
extremely well although the Casino night wasn’t very well supported by the community so maybe it’s not the sort of event they want to attend please let me know

The Playing Field continues to be a focal point for the Village. Several events
were held during the Jubilee Celebrations, starting with the music festival, Big
Lunch, Jazz in the Park, Playtime in the park and reaching a climax on Monday
evening when a large audience witnessed the lighting of the beacon and enjoyed
some impressive fireworks.
Despite the inclement weather the Cricket Club have managed to play some
matches and hold Junior training sessions. During the football “close season” the
Senior and Junior pitches have been reseeded in preparation for next winter's
matches.
The new Play equipment is being very well used, and families picnicking using
the new tables are often to be seen when the weather allows.
The AGM was held on 12th June. The Chair's report was given by Elspeth Fraser-Darling, and Peter Rushmere presented the Treasurer's Report. The latter
report emphasised how reliant we are on income from the events held through
the year, particularly the “Chase”, “Canter” and the Gala on Arnhem Weekend.
These events require an enormous amount of voluntary assistance, and the
Committee is very grateful to those who help each year.
As there were about a dozen nominees for the elected part of the Committee a
vote was held and seven were elected in accordance with the Constitution.
After the AGM the newly elected Committee Members, joined by the representatives from other groups, held a short meeting to elect Officers for the coming
year.
Elected were Chairman – David Cree, Vice-Chairman – Steve Bedford, Treasurer – Bruce Nelson, and Deanne Hammond is acting Minutes Secretary.
It is unfortunate that a considerable part of the committees' efforts and finances
have to be spent on repairs. Each time we have to pay for windows or the fabric
of the building to be repaired it means less finance is available for new developments.
We are grateful to the school for donating a set of Junior Goalposts, and to
David Dorey for arranging this. Hopefully by the time this is read they will have
been installed. The idea is that these are away from the areas used for Football
and Cricket Matches, and will be available for youngsters (and others!) to use
throughout the year without it mattering if the grass is worn away.

MEMORIES OF ROYAL OCCASIONS.

I have lived long enough now to remember Several Royal occasions and I thought it
would be interesting to wander down memory lane and recall some of those incidents. It
is a thought that for nearly every person in this country , most of their lives have been
spent in her reign.
1935 KING GEORGE V SILVER JUBILEE. I was seven and we lived in a very isolated part of the NW Highlands named Dundonnell. There was a big party for children at
the local school and I do remember it was a lovely warm day and we had a feast outside.
My father had one of the few cars in the area, an old Austin with collapsible roof. and
was busy transporting people over rough, unmetalled single track roads. The result was a
broken chassis!. There was no electricity then but a local landowner was able to show
silent films, a new experience for us. He showed Charlie Chaplin films and you can
imagine how we laughed. I have a vivid memory of Chaplin sitting next to a very large
bearded Italian gentleman who was eating spaghetti or rather taking a mouthful and sucking up the long strands. This was too much for Charlie Chaplin who kept putting out his
hand to catch a bit when it suddenly disappeared!
Sadly, within a few months the King had died.
1937 KING GEORGE VI. CORONATION. By now I was at school in Achiltibuie in
Wester Ross. This occasion was much grander and we all went to a big Church Service
in the local Territorial Drill Hall. We children lined the road as the local platoon of the
Seaforth Highlanders marched along the road into the Drill Hall followed by us and our
formidable Headmistress, Miss Campbell and then the rest of the village. A special
Preacher had been invited, well known for his preaching ability. Remember, the only
religion locally was Wee Free. I can’t remember how long he preached for but Miss
Campbell kept feeding us with jelly beans to keep us quiet. It was a very long sermon
and occasionally he would say or should I say shout about ’the WRRAATH OF GOD.
At least we woke up, and this resounding phrase was repeated at regular intervals. Quite
what this had to do with the Coronation, I have never understood. My parents were living
on Priest Island where my father was pursuing his studies of bird life. They, too, were
going to light a fire on the summit which would be seen for miles. We all waited and
nothing happened. In fact a stiff Northerly breeze had sprung up and Father very rightly
did not want to take the risk of a spreading but creeated some anxiety among us
Only three years later so many of those Seaforth Highlanders lost their lives or were captured as the 51st Highland Division was destroyed at St Valery holding the line to allow
the evacuation at Dunkirk to proced. The long term effects are still with us with the loss
of so many men fom an already depopulated area.
1953 QUEEN ELISABETH II. CORONATION. By now I had qualified as a doctor
and had been called up for military service. I was stationed in the Garrison HQ on the
edge of the Suez Canal. I guess quite a few who read this will remember their time in the
Canal Zone! The day started with the inevitable parade, massed bands and the salute being taken by the CinC, After that was a holiday and an opportunity to listen to the Service in Westminster Abbey. We could only receive long wave with the result that the
reception was pretty dreadful and often distorted. Nevertheless it was wonderful to listen
to the glorious music. I was in the Garrison Church Choir at the time which was fun and
open to all ranks. I still have the 78rpm recording of that service including Vaughan Wil-
liam’s wonderful setting of ‘All people that on earth do dwell’ where the tune in the 4th
verse is sung by the tenors.
1977 THE QUEEN’S SILVER JUBILEE. Well we were now settled in. I don’t remember much except for the lighting of the beacon other side of the field! The beacon
was lit for the first time and we had a party in the field
1992 THE QUEEN’S GOLDEN JUBILEE. I remember a huge village party in the
Playing Field with games and Competitions. I was persuaded to judge who was the most
glamorous Grandma. I was suitably arrayed in my frock coat and top hat, the rim decorated with flowers. With my fellow judges we chose the late Mrs Pheasant, Christine
Sywak’s mother. And who better as I am sure those who remember will agree. David,
my son whisked an old lady for a dance right down to the other side of the field! She was
none the worse for it!!
2012, THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE. We will all have our memories of this
last weekend.. At least it was fine for the lighting of the beacon and fire work display.
Jo came with me to keep an eye on me particularly as granddaughter, Ashley had plied
me with the strongest Real Ale available! It was for me, a very happy occasion meeting
up with so many old friends not to mention the odd middle-aged person I had delivered a
year or two back! For me, the main memory will be the great sense of warmth and joy
felt by everybody, not least by the Royal Family particular the warmth and happiness
shown by Her Majesty. After several years coping with many problems she is now surrounded by a happy and united family and the future of the monarchy assured. She is
obviously enjoying herself and is so much more relaxed and full of fun. We are all very
fortunate to have lived through her reign. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.

big "Thank You" to all the organisers and helpers of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations over the long weekend.

Parish Council News……July 2012.
Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebrations….
Without doubt, and not wishing to be singing our own praises the celebrations that so
many of us enjoyed were the most enormous success. When you consider what other
villages and towns did to celebrate the event ours were really outstanding. To have organised and held eight events over five days was terrific, even though the weather was
not that kind. There are also three more events to be held by the end of June, namely the
Amateur Journalist and Story Competition and the Sherwood Centre attendee’s party.
The success was due firstly to the sponsors who gave so generously and enabled us to
hold so many events including the raffle, the results of which have been displayed
through out the village; a list of sponsors is below.
Secondly all of the events received a huge level of local support and thanks must go to
all those who attended and made it all so worth while.
Lastly an enormous thank you must to go the group of people of all ages who fetched
and carried no end of items, put up, moved and took down marquees, bunting, notices,
tables and chairs, took photographs, made and served food and drinks, sold raffle tickets,
lit fireworks and the beacon, organised children’s games and entertainment, quizzes, the
music festival, a church service, organised poster and writing competitions and then
cleared up after each event was finished. This of course was coordinated by the Jubilee
Committee which represented all of the village’s organisations as well as individuals
who wished to give of their time and effort. In thanking this committee particular thanks
must go to Cllr Neil Fritzsche who as chairman had the unenviable task of making sure
that all of this happened without a hitch, which of course it did!
