Before this time, flamenco was hidden from influences and the curious and danced in homes and also in taverns. In the privacy of the family is where "the reunion" was formed and where spontaneously each one of the participants jumps in with their song and dance, following an unwritten code that everyone knows and respects. This genuine and intimate display continues among flamenco performers, at family celebrations and even at times, although now less and less, after a performance when the artists will get together to have a drink and "the reunion" will begin among them, an authentic display with artistry at its roots. Various artists sing, play guitar, dance and accompany along with their hands (tocar las palmas), on stage, practically forgetting that there is a public in observance, they form their own reunion where one feeds off of the other in an artistic display of inspiration while alternatively expressing their most personal form, distinct in preparation and mechanism from a typical public flamenco performance. Among the artists you will find the authentic voices rooted in flamenco. (Note 2) El Rastro de Madrid is a market with over 400 years of history, situated in the heart of the Ribera de Curtidores, a steep hill all along of which hundreds of stands are set up with a motley crew of objects for sale. The story behind this market is that historically, the area that makes up El Rastro was the same location for the tanneries, just next to the slaughterhouse. During the transport of the livestock to the tanneries, a trail, or rastro, of blood was left behind, hence the origin of the name of the now famous market. Some of the streets around the Ribera de Curtidores are dedicated to the sale of some speciality products.
