Each year, the C.C.A. organization honors individuals with the Lori Wilson Award, given in memory of a Georgia clogger and meant to honor persons who exemplify the spirit of clogging and competition. Jim Kimmerly from Ohio, and Roger Baldwin from North Carolina graciously accepted the honor and stated they would continue with their lives helping cloggers, spreading the love of clogging, and being a (Continued on page 12) Top Left: Amateur Female Champion Emily Harlow Top Right: Amateur Male Champion Kenan Olson Bottom Left: Duo/Duet Grand Champions Alyson and Caitlyn Vincent Bottom Center: Challenge Female and Choreographed Solo Champion Kelly Joyce Bottom Right: Challenge Male Champion Russell Eldridge Photos by B&R Photography The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging www.doubletoe.com 11 Clogging Champions of America (Continued from page 10) dedicated clogger; which is what Lori was known for. Kimmerly, of the Fancy Free Cloggers of Ohio, got a standing ovation as he received the award. Jim is 87 years young and a Pearl Harbor survivor! The first annual Carl Ogle “VOL” unteer Award was given to Kevin Parries for his endless hours of volunteering to the CCA organization for the last 13 years. The award is given in honor of Lynne’s husband, Carl, who lost a battle to cancer in November. Carl has been a tireless advocate of the organization and a big support to Lynne, who puts in hundreds of hours of work for the organization each year. The emotional presentation ceremony garnered a standing ovation for Parries and Lynne and Carl’s family members in attendance to present the award. The Clogging Champions of America organization also unveiled a new award at this year’s showdown, the “Legacy” award. The award is given to an individual who has made 12 www.doubletoe.com a long-standing contribution to the world of competitive clogging and who works to preserve and promote clogging in all of its forms. The winner of this first “legacy” award went to emcee Jeff Driggs, who was very humbled and surprised to be honored in such a way. Another unique aspect to this year’s event was the addition of a flash mob. A flash mob is a group of people who -- without prompting -- break into a musical or dance number in a public place, beginning with one person or a small group and adding performers until the end of the number. The C.C.A. flash mob was choreographed by Joel Harrison of Nebraska, posted to YouTube (a video posting website) and promoted via the C.C.A. website and social media. When the flash mob music began suddenly, a small group of dancers took to the stage and began dancing. Within moments, dozens of cloggers, dancers and even parents and spectators took to the stage, filled the aisles and balconies and began to join in. The result was truly spectacular. The event was filmed and can be seen on the C.C.A. website at www.ccaclog.com. The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging Each year, a select group of dancers are recognized as the All-Pro Team. The dancers are nominated by the judges at each of the qualifying events held through the year and narrowed down to a group of 16 by a committee charged with choosing the best dancers to represent the organization. This year’s AllPro team is Nathan Olson, Kelly Joyce, Kaeton Crosby, Tyler Hummer, Ashley Ramsey, Jessica Charmoli, Merm Crow, Russell Eldridge, Thomas Geren, Lanie Hudson, Paige Simmons, Patrick Squires, Kaylee Thomas, Blake Bartlett-Dunn, Leslie Adams and Katy McKinney. An All Pro Director is also nominated and awarded each year. The director will choreograph a routine to feature the All Pro honorees at the 2012 C.C.A. Showdown of Champions. This year’s All Pro Team Director is Heather Owens, of the Upstate Carolina Dance Center in South Carolina. In order to give more dancers the opportunity to be honored as an “All Pro,” once a dancer has been on the team for a number of years, they are then given the designation of “All Prop Legend” and another spot is made available. This year, three dancers achieved the honor of being named all pro “Legends,” Joel Harrison of Nebraska, and Andrew and Kacie Babbitt of California. Clogging Champions of America was formed in 1998 to generate more activity and interest in clogging and competition, to promote a spirit of fun and fellowship, and to make sure the beginner clogger gets the opportunity to enjoy competing as much as the clogger who has been in it for years. The goal of C.C.A. is to create an atmosphere of spirited and sportsmanlike competition, and to provide more opportunities for cloggers within the competitive and entertainment realms. “We feel that competition is a healthy and entertaining part of clogging because it offers dancers the opportunity to travel to different locations – meeting new clogging friends, step sharing, and supporting each other competitively,” said Kevin Parries of the C.C.A. organization. At Clogging Champions of America affiliated events, teams have in the past qualified in two levels of competition. Amateur teams have never won a first place honor in a clogging competition and may compete at that level for two calendar years before moving to the Challenge level of competition. The top three scoring teams in each category and division of Challenge, including Junior and Senior, qualify to dance at the Showdown of Champions held at the beginning of the following year. The top four scoring teams in each category of Amateur also qualify for the next year’s Showdown. This year, C.C.A. is adding another level of competition called STARZ. The STARZ level offers all of the same categories and rules that dancers are familiar with in the amateur and challenge levels of competition. The difference is in the scoring. Instead of ranking 1st, 2nd and 3rd against others in a category, dancers will place Platinum 1st Place, Gold 1st Place or Silver, based on a predetermined range of points for each place, with multiple winners in each age group and category. Many C.C.A. events are adding a full slate of traditional team categories and even flatfoot solos to their events, to encourage preservation of the more traditional styles of clogging. Lynne Ogle all but scoffed out loud the first time she saw her family members clogging. The ballet and tap teacher of many years couldn’t believe her parents had taken up the “hillbilly” dance technique and even subjected her young daughter to clogging. “It absolutely tore me to pieces because I was a ballet and tap teacher,” said Ogle, of Farragut. “I thought it was countrified. No daughter of mine was going to clog. She was going to be a ballet dancer.” That was thirty years ago. Her daughter, Gina White, who was five when she first attended clogging lessons, received a college scholarship for clogging. Ogle gave up teaching ballet and tap dancing for clogging a few short years after her introduction to it, at first because of the gaining popularity of clogging but eventually for love of the dance and its culture. The hobby her parents, Betty and Gene Lambert of Morristown, took up thirty years ago turned into a career for Ogle and a passion for three generations of her family. “When I started going to workshops, you would walk into a lot of these places, and cloggers would just talk to everyone,” said Ogle, 59, who is president of C.C.A. (the Clogging Champions of America). “It’s not like that in tap and ballet.” Though the women don’t dance in competition anymore - their days of winning championships are just about over due to wear and tear on their knees - they are very active in the clogging world and work to make the C.C.A. national championship held each Jaunary run smoothly and are welcome faces to many they have taught over the years. White, 37, of Corryton, worked behind the scenes at this year’s event while Lambert, 79, 14 www.doubletoe.com just hopes she can attend. Lambert was in a car accident in the fall, which has sidelined her from many clogging activities, including teaching young students at the Rose Center in Morristown, Tennessee. “I am missing it,” Lambert said. “We’ve had a lot of fun as a family.” In the late 1970s, a schoolteacher friend of Lambert’s tried to convince her and her husband to clog. “I didn’t know how, so I disregarded it,” Lambert said. But then she saw an amazing clogger at one of her granddaughter’s ballet and tap recitals. (Continued on page 19) Center: Lynne Ogle and late husband, Carl. Though he did not clog himself, Carl was a great supporter and volunteer for Lynne’s many clogging events. Right: Lynne Ogle, back left, attends a clogging performance about 25 years ago with her mother Betty Lambert, family friend Denni Hopper, her daughter Gina White, front, and father Gene Lambert. More than 30 years ago, the Lambert family took up the hobby of clogging and have been involved with the dance ever since. Soon Ogle found it was a culture she preferred. “It’s more family-oriented,” Ogle said. “The daddies come, and they don’t fall asleep during the recital because it’s more fun.” They formed a family team and traveled all over the country, performing at famous landmarks such as Billy Bob’s Texas honkytonk. They traveled to Pigeon Forge every summer to entertain at Dollywood. The family had a routine in which Gene Lambert would come on stage as though he was an audience member and imitate every step Ogle did. “We did a lot of funny things,” Lambert said. “We would have the audience laughing. We got into it because the kids were so good.” White said she remembers long days at her mother’s studio either watching lessons or training herself. She was a “studio baby.” She said clogging brought her friends from all over the country. It took up much of her time during high school but led to a scholarship to a college in North Carolina. Ogle taught clogging four nights a week in Knoxville, created her own clogging teams and traveled to shows almost every weekend for many years. One of her teams won several national titles in the early 1990s. The three generations of East Tennesseans work to promote the sport they grew to love despite preconceived notions of it. Though she gave up her dance studio, Ogle still hosts Smoky Mountain Encore, one of the largest clogging workshops in the country every March in Gatlinburg. The C.C.A. showdown is a time to see how the dance has changed with new routines and costumes, but it’s also a time to see old faces. It’s a perfect reminder as to why the three women traded in their ballet shoes for clogs. The 2011 Clogging Champions of America All Pro Team Director Heather Owens has been taking dance classes since she was 4, and it didn’t take her family and teachers long to realize she had a natural talent, she says. “When I was seven, I pretty much knew this was what I was going to do,” says Owens, who’s been the owner and dance instructor at Upstate Carolina Dance Center since she was twenty. “I was teaching dance classes in my living room to all my mom’s friends. It’s just what I’ve always wanted to do.” When she first opened UCDC seventeen years ago, she had about 150 students and a 2,800 square foot dance center. Today, she has about 600 students, and the studio is about 11,000 square feet. UCDC has won numerous awards over the years. Owens says she believes the dance center’s “versatility” has made it stand out. “We have two different competition programs. We have a jazz competitive program, and we have a clogging competitive program,” she said. “Most studios only have one or the other. So we are top in the country in both.” Upstate Carolina Dance Center is also a second home for Owens. “It’s kind of like my second family,” she said. Owens grew up in the house next door to UCDC, and she inherited the property that her dance center is on from her grandfather. It was once her grandfather’s watermelon and cantaloupe patch. “I lived in the house next door, and I used to race go karts on that property,” she says with a laugh.
