200 Kennedy Memorial Drive, Waterville 207-861-3000 • www.inlandhospital.org MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY Investing in your health Inland puts you and your family first in all we do. You are why we make quality and safety a priority; you are at the center of our plans for the future; and you are the reason we are investing in primary care, which is the foundation of our efforts to improve community health. 2010 Top Accomplishments: • Recognized as one of America’s Top Five Rural Hospitals by the Leapfrog Group for excellence in patient safety and quality. (Read more on Page 15.) • Lakewood recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services for its outstanding quality of care through a deficiency-free annual health survey. Our work in 2010, reflected in these pages, shows you the outstanding people, programs and progress of a dynamic healthcare organization that is committed to help build a healthy future for the Greater Waterville area. • Received five patient and employee satisfaction awards from Avatar International. This is the fourth year in a row that Inland has received top honors from Avatar. Primary Care From recruiting new providers, to expanding our family practice offices in Unity and Oakland and establishing a new family practice in downtown Waterville, or opening two walk-in healthcare clinics at Walmart SuperCenters – you will be cared for! • Achieved an additional nine patient safety and quality goals on the journey toward zero preventable errors in the care we provide including implementing a process to identify and treat all patients at risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (blood clots) upon admission to the hospital, and the management of all ICU patients by critical care physicians. Quality & Safety From investing in an electronic medical record system that links our physician practices and the hospital, to being chosen as one of the nation’s top five rural hospitals for patient safety and quality - you will be cared for! • Launched eQuest, our EMHS system initiative to use an electronic medical record (EMR) to improve quality, safety, and efficiency and to promote service excellence. All Inland physician offices will use an EMR by the end of 2011. As we grow with the times, our mission will remain the same, to care for and serve our community. • Added more than a dozen new providers to our employed staff, specializing in primary care, emergency medicine, general surgery, and hospitalist care. Please let us know if you have thoughts about Inland’s performance and contributions to our community. We value your feedback. Inland Hospital • Completed expansion of two family practice offices in Unity and Oakland, and started construction on a new family practice office in downtown Waterville. • Opened two walk-in clinics at Walmart (photo right, page 3) in Waterville and Augusta, offering affordable, easy access to basic healthcare services. • Opened the Bickford Medical Simulation Program at Inland with 200+ local EMS, doctors, nurses, and others training on the high-tech patient simulators. (See photo on page 8.) • Enhanced linkages with our advanced care partner, EMMC, to include tele-stroke services in our Emergency Department. • Developed the Inland Woods Trail behind the hospital for the community to use for walking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. From the gift of good health, to the gifts of education, economic stability, and the arts, Inland is committed to collaborating with others to enhance lives and strengthen our community every day. Inland staff donate their time to serve on local boards, as committee members and volunteers of organizations such as the Waterville Area Homeless Action Group. Through our Community Benefit program, Inland contributed financially to the following organizations in 2010 to support their important work in our community: Helping the hungry: As part of the United Way’s Pantry Project, Inland and Lakewood employees collected more than 1500 pounds of food and personal care items for the food pantries in Unity and Madison. Photo above: Employees load donations into Barbara Santiago’s car. Santiago is Coordinator of the People Who Care Food Cupboard which serves Madison, Anson, N. For the recipe, visit www.inlandhospital.org. Lasting impact on health: We created the Inland Woods Trail behind the hospital in 2010 to help our community be active year-round by walking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The trail links to the City of Waterville’s Pine Ridge Recreation Area and an extended network of trails. A $35,000 Recreational Trails Program grant from the Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks and Lands paid for 73% of the Inland trail development that will include a paved, handicapped accessible loop around Lakewood later in 2011. OUR VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Elizabeth “Betty” Martin Doing things from the heart has always been a way of life for Betty Martin of Winslow; raising five children, co-managing the family aviation business, and then caring for her husband, Roland, who had Alzheimer’s. After Betty and Roland moved to Winslow five years ago to be closer to their grown children, the family decided it was best for Roland to be cared for at Lakewood’s Alzheimer’s unit. As a way to give back for the excellent care her husband was receiving, Betty began volunteering at Lakewood - she entertained residents with old time songs on the piano, played games and read to them. She cared about all the residents and the compassionate staff who make Lakewood a real home. As a talented quilter, Betty created several beautiful wall hangings for Lakewood and volunteered to make the quilts for the facility’s new bereavement program, which is designed to honor the life of a resident who passes away while at Lakewood. Instead of quickly removing the deceased from the facility in an impersonal, anonymous manner, the person’s body is now draped with a colorful, intricately designed quilt and a heartfelt song “Going Home” plays overhead in their honor as they make their final trip through Lakewood hallways. While the resident’s passing is still mourned, the music and quilt are Lakewood’s expression of respect and celebration for the life lived. On Thanksgiving night of 2010, Betty and her children lost the family patriarch after 10 years of Alzheimer’s. Betty says she has always felt honored to have her quilts used as part of how families say goodbye to loved ones. But for Roland, her husband of 54 years, it was truly from her heart...and soul. Community volunteers donated 16,690 hours to Inland and Lakewood in 2010 - thank you for helping us serve our community! That dedication to putting you first has earned Inland a prestigious quality award as one of the Top 5 Rural Hospitals in the nation from the Washington, DC, based Leapfrog Group. The selection is based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s national survey that measures hospitals’ performance in crucial areas of patient safety and quality. The results are posted on Leapfrog’s website, leapfroggroup.org. “It represents an enormous commitment by the institution to not only measure what they do against tough standards, but also to work for change and be transparent about it. And it’s a signal to employers and other health care purchasers in their community that these hospitals care,” said Elizabeth Mitchell, Executive Director of the Maine Health Management Coalition. The Leapfrog survey focuses on four critical areas of patient safety: the use of computer physician order entry to prevent medication errors; standards for doing high-risk procedures; protocols and policies to reduce medical errors and other safe practices recommended by the National Quality Forum; and adequate nurse and physician staffing. In addition, hospitals are measured on their progress in preventing infections and other hospital-acquired conditions and adopting policies on the handling of serious medical errors. Leapfrog Board Chair and President of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute David Knowlton noted, “Leapfrog believes the challenges for American health care go far beyond just keeping costs down. Making certain that patients get the right care at the right time–is Inland patient, Ruth Lessard of Waterville stretches her legs during a walk with nurse Lisa Stevens, RN. an equal part of the equation.” The Leapfrog Group is a national coalition of public and private purchasers of employee health coverage founded a decade ago to work for improvements in health care safety, quality and affordability. Initially organized by the Business Roundtable, it is now an independent organization working with a broad range of partners, including hospitals and insurers. www.inlandhospital.org • Excellence 15 NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION U.S. POSTAGE PAID WATERVILLE, ME PERMIT 122 Inland Hospital 200 Kennedy Memorial Drive Waterville, Maine 04901 207-861-3000 www.inlandhospital.org you will be cared for...
