Where the Rubber Hits the Road: Tough Decisions Ahead
In this edition of 5 Minutes for Business, Hendrik Brakel, our Senior Director,
Economic, Financial and Tax Policy, looks at the tough economic decisions the
new federal government will have to make and the impact those choices could
have on our economy.
Canada’s new government is off to a great start! People are cheering the new
Cabinet and the return of the long-form census. But, there are tough decisions
ahead. For instance, the Parliamentary Budget Office now projects larger deficits,
$3 billion next year and almost $5 billion in 2017. How will the government deal
with this situation while still making good on its promises? What does this mean
for personal taxes? For business?
Read 5 Minutes for Business to find out.

Eligible employers to share $10 million of excess reserves
WHITEHORSE This week, the Yukon Workers' Compensation Health and Safety Board will
issue cheques totaling $10 million to employers as part of its excess reserve rebate.
A total of 3,568 eligible employers will share the rebate, receiving a cheque based on the total
assessments they paid from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2014.
“The board’s investment portfolio has performed very well,” said Board Chair Mark Pike. “That,
coupled with positive operational results has left our compensation fund with more money than
necessary to provide excellent benefits to every Yukon worker ever injured on the job.”
After consultation with stakeholders, including the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, the Board
decided to issue a $10 million rebate to bring the compensation fund closer to its target range.
The target is a reserve fund of between 121 and 129 per cent of the cost of caring for every
Yukon worker injured on the job. At the end of 2014, the compensation fund was at 160 per cent.
Because of the Board’s measured approach, employers will receive a total of $14 million through
lower rates and the $10 million rebate by the end of 2015.
Once the fund returns to its target range, employers will pay the true cost of caring for Yukoners
injured on the job. Today, they are paying less than that cost.
“The Yukon is a small jurisdiction and we must be careful to protect the fund on behalf of workers
and employers,” said Pike. “This approach is designed to gradually reduce the excess reserves
without significant impact to the assessment rates charged employers. However, this rebate
comes after exceptional performance of our investment portfolio and, because of that, should not
be considered a regular event.”
Information on the rebate can be found at www.wcb.yk.ca

In the past year
We are asking local businesses and organizations to
partner with us during this campaign and help us
cover some of the 1300 Kettle host hours this year.
This Christmas we have a goal of $72,000
It’s simple, here’s how you do it:
Pick a date and location that works for you. Then
arrange for your staff to man the Christmas Kettle for a
set period of time*. During this time your business logo
will be displayed on the Kettle stand. (*1 day with a kettle is
just 10 hours – in that time a Kettle can raise up to $1,000 or more.)
However we realize how busy Christmas can be! That it
can be difficult to fit Kettle hosting into your schedule.
Another way you can help support is with a donation of
$250 or more. As a Thank You we will put your
organizations logo atop one of our kettles for a day.

Staying in the present
Contact Info:
In the course of the day, our minds often drift to the past or the
future. Dwelling on past hurts or mistakes, or worrying about the
future without finding solutions increases stress, anxiety, and
depression.

Practice mindfulness as an alternative. Stay in the present
by focusing on the "here and now" like the smells of nature,
the act of stroking your child's hair, your breathing, and even
the sensations in your big toe!
If feelings of anxiety or depression are interfering with your
relationships, work, or enjoyment of life, seek help.
Sometimes talking to a friend or family member is all it
takes. Other times talking with a professional is needed.
Being present and mindful is a tool that increases happiness and
enjoyment, and decreases sensory overload and negative self-talk.
It's free, always available, and sustaniable!

Exercises for your mind
Cultivating more mindfulness takes practice. Our minds jump from
one thought to the next and tend to dwell on the future and the
past, rather than the present. Regular meditation is one way to
practice staying in the moment. Here are some other ways to
become more mindful:

Pay attention to your thoughts and notice whether they are realistic
and grounded in the present. (video clip)
