“IT IS WHAT IT IS”
Those who knew
Steve Bazzo heard
those words uttered
often during his sixmonth cancer battle.
The 45-year-old
passed away in March
this year, following
his
diagnosis
of
melanoma
last
By Tracey Lewis
September.
After being given
the all clear on Christmas Eve last year, Bazzo
started having trouble with his eyes and in
early March had a scheduled scan that led
to the discover of tumors on his brain, in his
kidneys and on his ribs.
Less than three weeks later Bazzo passed
away in his sleep after dinner with the family
he adored – wife Kylie, 13-year-old daughter
Kameron and 11-year-old son Rhett.
Admired for his tenacity on the field and
his hatred of losing as much as for his love of
being heavily involved in his children’s sport
and football in the community, Bazzo was a
Life Member of both Swan Districts and Peel
Thunder. He also played for West Perth.
He made his league debut in 1995 with
the Black Ducks, where he went on to play
» The Bazzo’s celebrate daughter
Kameron’s 13th birthday last December
158 games and kick 82 goals. In 1996 he
headed to the Falcons and played 14 games
(including one in 1997) before heading South
to join Peel Thunder in their inaugural WAFL
season, playing his first game in Round 9,
1997 and his last in 2000. He was made a Life
Member of the Thunder in 2007.
This weekend the Thunder and the Swans
will battle it out at Bendigo Bank Stadium not
just to cement their place in the WAFL top
five, but to pay tribute to the man who was
working with the Peel Under 16 team up until
four days before he passed away.
The Bazzo Tribute Match is on this Sunday.
The game starts at 11.40am and it is $10
day. Entry to the game is $10, there will be
$10 Social Memberships for sale as well as
selected merchandise and $10 food and
beverage deals.
Rhett will be the Peel Rookie for the day
and run out with the team, while Kameron
and Kylie will toss the coin.
While Bazzo had every right to feel anger
and a sense of being robbed of many more
years with his beautiful young family, he
instead spent his six-month battle living his
life the only way he knew how.
“We’ve always been pretty positive
people and that’s how Steve tried to stay,”
said Kylie, who is just as dedicated to her kids’
and community sport as Steve was. Kylie took
the reins as CEO at Peel Thunder in 2001.
“Football was in his blood and when he
was coaching he seriously had the magnetic
board in bed with us at night!
“He lived and breathed sport – not just
football. When our son decided to stop
playing Auskick and start playing soccer
Steve was horrified. But in the end the team
needed a coach and he stepped up. He also
didn’t really like basketball at first but our
daughter made a few State teams and he
learned to like it.
“His philosophy was always that sport was
more than just a game, it was life. It brought
people together, you get to meet some great
people and it helps lay good foundations for
the rest of your life.”
The Bazzo clan certainly have a lot of
friends in football from WAFL through to
country ranks.
» Steve Bazzo in 1994
Bazzo hailed from Bunbury and had a
dutiful bond to the South West and Peel
regions of Western Australia.
When he finished playing WAFL he headed
to Pinjarra in the Peel Football League where
he played in three grand finals from 20012003 and he also stayed involved at Peel as
an assistant coach and runner.
In 2009 he took on his first senior
coaching job at Pinjarra where he stayed for
two seasons.
Then in 2013 he was the head coach at
South Mandurah, where he stayed until the
end of last year before heading back to Peel
where he was assistant coach of their Under
16s team.
Kylie and Steve were together for 24 years.
The loss of Steve is still very raw, but for Kylie
there is some comfort in knowing that their
children have inherited many of their father’s
traits
“They both got his loopy sense of humour,”
she said with a sense of joy.
“Rhett is the spitting image of Steve but
both kids are very determined and hate
losing with a passion – just like their dad.”
Steve Bazzo’s WAFL career:
Swan Districts – 158 games 82 goals (1988-1995)
West Perth – 14 games 2 goals (1996-1997)
Peel Thunder – 58 Games 22 goals (1997-2000)
Total -- 230 games, 106 goals

Collectables
During 2015, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you
to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away
at home.
I always love it when someone brings a case
full of items with them when they come to see
me.
That is especially so when the case is a
battered old leather one, giving me some
hope that the items inside might not be from
the very recent past.
So when one gentleman, who wanted to
remain anonymous, did just that during the
past week, it made my day.
Inside his father’s old case was a whole
stack of WAFL ephemera, much of which
dated to the 1950s.
Among the old Football Budgets and
various magazines were a whole heap
of souvenirs from travelling State teams,
including photos, newspaper cuttings and
tour itineraries.
Perhaps the most unusual of them were
the souvenir menus for the meals served
to the WA team at the Freemason’s Hotel in
Tasmania during the 1966 carnival.
There were also tour itineraries for the WA
side’s trip to Hobart in 1966 and Melbourne
in 1967, along with the itinerary for West
Perth’s trip to Singapore in 1963 and dozens of
newspaper match reports from big games.
In my opinion, the nicest item was the
menu from the “complimentary dinner” that
West Perth put on for the Essendon Football
Club when it visited Perth in 1947 and twice
took on a WA Second XVIII at Subiaco Oval.
While these sorts of items may not attract
quite as good a price as the Football Budget
from that match at auction, I reckon they are
fantastic reminders of a time when the WAFL
was at its peak.
The unnamed collector wasn’t the
only person to impress me with some old
memorabilia, though.
A Swan Districts supporter also showed
me a rare copy of a WA Footballer magazine
that would appeal to WAFL collectors and
Collingwood collectors alike.
The magazine, which was the predecessor
to the Football Budget, covered the second
match of Collingwood’s visit to WA in August
1927.
WA Footballers are tough to find at the best
of times, let alone when it includes coverage
of the always popular Magpies and this one
would fetch a good amount at auction.
For the record, WA was victorious by 22
points, in front of a crowd of 14,000 at Subiaco
Oval. But the Pies won the first match by an
almost identical margin.
I received a message this week from East
Perth supporter Wayne, who was on holiday
in Geraldton when he spotted an interesting
item in a junk shop.
It was a plate which carried a photograph
of the Perth Rovers team of 1885, which
was the first season of Australian football in
Western Australia.
It was manufactured in 1985 to celebrate
the 100th anniversary of the WAFL and has
previously sold for between $40 and $60.
Wayne, who collects
Wembley Ware pottery, said
he wasn’t sure if he would
hold on to the plate, which
he managed to buy for just
$15.
Meanwhile
another
Wayne came across an East
Fremantle teaspoon at a
market in South Australia.
These teaspoons were
produced in the mid-80s by
Opal Design Australia and Wayne managed to
secure his for $20. I have seen the same spoon
for West Perth, but not for any of the six other
traditional clubs.
And, finally, perhaps the discovery of the
week was made by Ron, who went through a
pile of inherited papers and discovered a 1937
Grand Final Budget.
Ron’s relative was a Claremont supporter,
which probably explained why he only scored
the game up to the end of the third quarter.
Old Easts ran away with it in
the last term to secure another
premiership, though the Tigers
won the next three.
Anyway, Ron has now sold the
Budget, which was only serving as
food for the silverfish at his place.

Entertainment
Fantastic 4
(20th Century Fox)
FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s
original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four
young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous
universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways.
Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness
their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a
former friend turned enemy.
Set in contemporary New York, this retelling focuses on the Four
before they become a team – when they were four young idealistic
adventurers who make a headstrong leap into the unknown.
Fantastic Four focuses on the human drama of relatable characters
that at first don’t perceive their new physical abilities as advantages,
but as daunting, if not impossible, challenges.
Fantastic Four stars Miles Teller (Whiplash) as Reed Richards,
Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station, Chronicle) as Johnny Storm, Kate
Mara (Netflix’s House of Cards) as Sue Storm, and Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot,
AMC’s Turn) as Ben Grimm.
The film also stars Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes)
as Victor von Doom, a brilliant but rebellious computer programmer
and Baxter Institute student; Reg E. Cathey (House of Cards, The Wire)
as Dr. Franklin Storm, Johnny and Sue’s father; and Tim Blake Nelson
(O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as an unscrupulous Baxter Institute board
member.
Fantastic 4 opens on July 30
Southpaw (Roadshow)
FROM acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (Training
Day) and screenwriter Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy),
SOUTHPAW tells the riveting story of Billy ‘The Great’
Hope, reigning Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion of
the World (Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal).
Billy Hope seemingly has it all with an impressive career,
a beautiful and loving wife (Rachel McAdams), an adorable
daughter (Oona Laurence) and a lavish lifestyle. When tragedy
strikes and his lifelong manager and friend (Curtis ‘50 Cent’
Jackson) leaves him behind, Hope hits rock bottom and turns to
an unlikely savior at a run-down local gym: Tick Willis (Academy
Award winner Forest Whitaker), a retired fighter and trainer to the
city’s toughest amateur boxers.
With his future riding on Tick’s guidance and tenacity,
Billy enters the hardest battle of his life as he struggles with
redemption and to win back the trust of those he loves.
Southpaw opens on August 20.

South FreM v East Perth
This is the clash between a team
with inconsistent form and a lineup that’s been tougher to pick
than a broken nose.
South Fremantle has gone
loss-win, loss-win for the past
four rounds while East Perth has
bounced up and down the ladder
like a yo-yo.
So for each the battle is a
mini-final as the loser might have
to wave goodbye to playing in
September.
Ashton Hams ended his AFL
career because he didn’t want to
play at East Perth when not on
West Coast duty. He and brother
Kyle have been outstanding in
recent weeks and hold the key
for the Bulldogs in this clash.
Marlon Pickett and
rising star Callum Ah Chee
have also been shining
lights for South Fremantle.
East Perth has plenty
to play for, particularly
to celebrate the 50th
appearance
of
hardworking defender Mitch
Fraser.
West Perth v Claremont
Aaron Black is a premiership
player, Sandover medallist and
State representative.
And in this round the West
Perth midfielder will notch
another achievement by playing
his 100th match for the Falcons.
It has been a steady course
for Black, who made his league
debut in round 16 2010.
However, Black has to try to
lift a West Perth team that was
brought back to earth by the loss
to Swan Districts last Saturday.
Black will call on Nick Rodda,
Matthew Fowler, Steven Browne
and Matthew Johnson to help
challenge a Claremont team that
was defeated by a strong Peel
line-up in round 17.
The Tigers are confident Tom
Swift can find plenty of match
form before the finals. He snared
21 disposals in his first
match back last
week.
Subiaco v Perth
First versus last. On paper it would
seem Subiaco don’t have much
to play for in this encounter with
Perth.
However, getting top spot
for the finals is so much more
important in 2015 with the return
of a top-five system. The minor
premier gets a week off and
hosting rights for the second semifinal.
Another win for the Lions
would just about seal the deal.
It is crucial Subiaco maintain
their intensity and will rely on
Clancy Wheeler, Scott Worthington
and Scott Hancock to keep their
teammates’ minds on the job.
When the teams previously
met in round seven the Demons
restricted the Lions to eight goals
– only they could manage three of
their own.
Mitch Morton will be called on
to keep the Perth scoreline ticking
over, Liam McKenna must keep
trying to push his team forward
while Dene White has to continue
to lead in midfield.
» Kyle Hams
» Ed Langdon
Did You Know
Clancee Pearce set a new
record for season 2015 with 40
disposals as Peel Thunder beat
Claremont last weekend.
Peel v Swan Districts
Making the finals isn’t just
enough for Peel. The team from
Mandurah can now eye a highplaced final after defeating
Claremont at the Showground.
With Brendon Jones, Ed
Langdon, Jacob Ballard and
Ethan Hughes firing the Thunder
can target a second-placed finish.
But they need to defeat a
Swan Districts team that only last
round defeated West Perth, the
team currently in second position
on the ladder.
Zac Dawson is working his
way back to AFL level and his
possible retention at Peel would
make scoring that much more
difficult for Swans.
The black and whites have
won four of their past five
matches with Ryan Davis, Matt
Riggio, Tony Notte and Nathan
Broad having major impacts.
Swans are fourth win an 8-7
record and need to keep winning
to confirm a finals berth.

McDonald’s extends successful WAFL partnership
McDonald’s will continue its partnership
with the West Australian Football
League for the 2016 season following a
successful start to the inaugural year of
the partnership in 2015.
McDonald’s became the major broadcast
and naming rights partner for the 2015
McDonald’s WAFL Premiership Season,
helping to pave the way for games to be
televised in the Perth metropolitan area and

McDonald’s Mandurah and Greenfields

the partnership was a great opportunity
for McDonald’s and its WA owner operators
to show their ongoing support for homegrown football.
“Not only will our investment allow WAFL

WAFC Female Football Ambassadors
announced
A group of 20 WAFC Female Ambassadors
were announced last week to join AFL
State Female Ambassador Chelsea
Randall in promoting female football
throughout WA.
The inaugural 20 Ambassadors were
selected from a large number of applications
to support with the ongoing promotion and
awareness of Female Football in WA.
WAFC Female Football Coordinator Allana
Dickie said she was very pleased with the
nominations.
“It wasn’t easy to select just 20 Ambassadors
but we are very happy with the appointments.
We were looking for passionate role models
that can help promote the right messages and
we are confident we selected the right people
for this,” Dickie said.
The Ambassador program will also teach
valuable mentoring skills to up and coming
role models, and provide opportunities for
young players to develop leadership skills
whilst promoting female football.
The first official appearance for the
Ambassadors will be at the Youth Girls Super
Sunday on August 16 at Steel Blue Oval in
Bassendean. Activities will commence from
10am.

West Australian Football Commission Club
Development Manager Glenn Morley said
he was thrilled with the 3010 nominations
received for last year’s award and hoped even
more nominations would be sumbitted this
year to recognise one of the game’s most
valuable assets.
“Volunteers play a crucial role at all levels
of football so it’s important they receive
recognition,” he said.
“There are so many aspects of our game
that just wouldn’t happen without the
dedication and commitment of our volunteers.
They are involved at all levels, whether it’s in
the canteen, umpiring, coaching or driving
their kids to the game.
“Just like there are star players and star

and it is thanks to The Sunday Times that we
can do this.”

A fortunate 1000 for Rod Clarke
When Rod Clarke answered an
advertisement calling for WAAFL field
umpires in 1987, little did he know that
his phone call would be the start of a
journey that has led him to achieve
one of the rare milestones in Australian
Rules Football.
This Saturday, July 25, Clarke will umpire his
1000th game, officiating in the B Grade game
between Hamersley Carine and Swan Athletic.
Clarke developed an attachment to
football in the mid 60’s when he played for
North Innaloo and Karrinyup Junior Football
Clubs, before coaching Tuart Hill under 12’s in
1976, a team that included former Essendon
player Darren Bewick.
Clarke returned to football in 1984, as a
ruckman for two seasons with Girrawheen,
before becoming an umpire in 1987 to
combine his love, fitness and understanding
of football into one package.
Back then WAAFL umpires had no official
uniform, but they had a code of dress which
was a white shirt, wrist bands and shorts and
black socks. The “ACME Thunderer” whistle
was the tool of the trade.
From 1987-1994 Clarke umpired as a
single field umpire in the WAAFL. In those
days the field umpire was the sole WAAFL
representative on game day, which meant not
only was he an umpire but he was the WAAFL’s
liaison officer, problem solver and game-day
trouble shooter.
By the end of 1994 he had umpired 175
WAAFL games, predominantly as a single
umpire and his body was telling
him it was ready for retirement. In
1995 the WAAFL announced that
all panel appointed games would
be umpired under a two umpire
system which was the good fortune
that saved Clarke from retirement.
He continued as a field umpire
in the two umpire system until
the end of the 2006 season. After
20 seasons of field umpiring,
Clarke had finally hit “the wall” of

Brigades take match of the round
The match of the round in the Great
Northern Football League has pitted
second-placed Towns against thirdplaced Brigades with Brigades coming
out 40-point winners.
Justin Monaco and Leith Teakle showed
great form with seven goals each, while Mark
McGough and James Teakle added solid
support. Towns were well-served by Thomas
Knight, Zac Ellis and Desmond Corbett who
chipped in with five majors.
Top side Mullewa bounced back after last
round’s loss to Towns with a 35-point win
over Railways. Dale Wallam had a day out
bagging 10 goals for Mullewa, while Leedham
Papertalk and Godfrey Curley were good.
Best for Railways was James Huggins, Jordan
Comeagain and David Crudeli.
Rovers won their third match of the season
with an upset 15-point win over Chapman
Valley. Liam Ryan, (four goals) was the leading
scorer while Gabriel Parfitt and Clayton Dann
battled for the winners. Nathan Gray and Matt
Ferguson tried hard for the Royals.

Can You Help?
Since the beginning of the 1970 WAFL season there have
been 4162 league debutants at an average of 93 new
players per season.
The WAFL player database
is missing a date of birth for only 23
YouScan.me
of these players but the birth place and junior/previous club is not
recorded for a further 240 players.
Each week the Budget will list the playing records of eight
players for whom information is sought. These include:
Simeon Peter BOTSIS (Subiaco 1997-2000, 26 games)
Barry Thomas DOWELL (Perth 1977-81, 13 games)
Michael Joseph JACKSON (Subiaco 1977-78, 6 games)
Terry William MOIR (West Perth 1978-79, 10 games)
Leith PAINTER (West Perth 1992-93, 29 games)
Francis Damien ROCHFORD (South Fremantle 1971, 2 games)
Tony Mario SAGE (East Perth 1970, 3 games)
Colin John SIBSON (Swan Districts 1988, 5 games)
Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full
particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by
WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson (gwardelljohnson@wafc.com.
au) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
