A Message
from the
Chamber CEO...
Succession Planning Vital for Any
Organization
Succession planning is a prominent issue I
have observed not only in business but also
in the non-profit world. Baby boomers are
retiring left and right and as a society, we
are doing a horrible job of being proactive
and preparing for the inevitable transition
of replacing our leaders. Why do we wait
until someone retires or is no longer able to
run an organization to find a replacement?
We as leaders need to start doing a better job of creating a
succession plan for our organizations so they don't suffer a slow
death as a result of losing a leader or not being able to find a
replacement.
Understand Succession Plan is a Process
The most important take-away for you in this article is the fact
that succession planning is not easy; it doesn't happen overnight;
and it won't happen unless you start TODAY! Having a
continuous plan of succession is just as important as your
organization's vision; they go hand in hand. Your vision tells you
what you want your company to look like in the future and your
succession plan will assist in the continuity of your organization
and will ensure it stays alive. Another importance of succession
planning is the fact that it allows you to analyze what needs to
happen now and implement change now. Do you have a
succession plan for your organization? Don't worry, it's not too
late. Today I will give you some tips to assist you in starting to
create a succession plan for your organization.
Start Succession Development Today
I know I keep referring to this as succession planning, but in all
honesty, it is more of succession development which means you
need to begin developing your people so they will have the skills
and training necessary to lead the organization. No matter if you
are a business or non-profit; you need to continuously develop
your employees or volunteers. Look around your organization and
start identifying the people who have the potential and more
importantly the desire to move up into a leadership role. For this
step, make sure you understand that skills can be taught.
Character and values can not be taught. Make sure the people you
are investing time to train possess the character and values that
match the vision of your organization. You can have the smartest
person on your team that is highly skilled but if they lack the
passion, drive and ethics you are looking for, they will not be a
good fit to take over some day.
Understand Your Goals & Objectives for Succession Planning
The most important step to this process is clearly understanding
what your goals are for your organizations' succession plan. Are
you going to retire in 5 years? Do you have senior management
getting ready to retire? Whatever the case may be, you need to be
aware of what you are trying to accomplish in order to create a
road map to help you achieve your succession goals.
Write Your Plan
Now that your "wheels are in motion" and I have you thinking
about succession, don't procrastinate any further; WRITE YOUR
PLAN!!

Governmental
Affairs Update
Have you heard about the Tracy Chamber
Governmental Affairs Committee, (GAC)? This is
a new committee of the Chamber that brings
education and awareness to our businesses. The
mission of the GAC committee is to provide a
perspective on local, state and federal policy issues
that are impacting the Tracy business community.
Through the GAC Committee, the Chamber aims to
further support businesses and continue finding
solutions to their issues and challenges. Local
representatives from Congress, State and Assembly
attend the meeting to provide legislative updates
and answer questions from businesses. In addition
to reviewing legislation, the committee also provides
updates on local city council meetings and discusses
current business issues. The Governmental Affairs
Committee is a great opportunity for you to voice
your business opinion and become informed. Join us
for the next meeting on Thursday, July 21st at
4PM at the Chamber.
Earlier this year, the Chamber released a survey to
its members to ask them how their business is doing
and obtain feedback on their business issues. The
Chamber is diligently working with several local
partners to find solutions to common issues and
concerns, and will continue updating its
membership on positive changes that have been
made.
June Lunch Meet-Up at Denny’s Restaurant
Bottom Left to Right: Sofia Valenzuela, Dave Tillman. Karen Aranda, Betsy Moreno, Dave
Garcia, Cliff Hudson, Conrad Levoit, Ceci Haas, Jennifer Boylan
This month, the Chamber will be sending out a
survey to our members to ask them to tell us what
questions they would like to be featured during the
Mayoral and Council Forums that will take place in
September. The Tracy Chamber will be partnering
with the Tracy Press to host these local elected
official forums, and the Chamber’s primary focus is
to be the voice of business and represent its
members. What business focused questions would
you like to ask our mayoral and city council
candidates? This is your opportunity to make your
voice
heard
and
have
your
questions
answered during the upcoming forum. Please email
us
your
business
questions
to
info@tracychamber.org or participate in our
online survey and tell us what questions you
would like us to ask on your behalf. As a Chamber
committed to creating a strong local economy, we
are committed to providing opportunities for our
members to not only have their voices heard, but
also to be part of the election process by
participating, being informed, and making the right
decision as it relates to electing pro-business
candidates. We encourage you to attend the
upcoming forums and we will be providing more
detailed information in the next newsletter to
inform you of the dates/locations so you can
participate.
Being the voice of business is our priority. If your
business is experiencing challenges or issues that are
preventing you from growing your business, contact
the Chamber so we can determine if there is an
opportunity to assist your business in mitigating
those issues.
Be part of the solution. Consider attending an
upcoming GAC meeting. This meeting is open to all
members of the Chamber.
