In this period of falling oil prices, it is all the more important to reduce costs and find ways to reduce costs – by avoiding clashes, reduce reworks in production, even if this means some more manhours in engineering. And ensure better utilisation of material. Why Design & Engineer Drawings, Calculations, Modelling, etc. help all to visualise the concept, identify possible trouble areas, provide the right sequence to build, plan manpower, etc., etc. Ultimate Aim – least possible time and least cost. The Evolution of Design Engineering Ø Direct Build – by experience only. Olden days, people used to build and if it did not work, they used to correct it later or in the next design Ø Sketches by hand and some empirical calculations. Ø Hand Calculations and Manual drawings – advent of calculators Ø Computers and CAD Ø 2D Modelling & Autocad Ø Partial 3D Modelling and Analysis Software as standalone items Ø Integrated 3D Modelling for all disciplines Ø Analysis tools integrated with 3D Modelling Ø Integrated Materials Management Ø 4D Modelling Ø 5D Modelling – The Immediate Future We Are Here The Evolution of Design Engineering Another area of improvement is the design stages itself. Traditionally Ø Basic Design used to be performed by one company Ø Detailed Engineering was done by another company Ø Fabrication engineering was done by either the yard or yet another company This methodology gives limited level of Accountability or Responsibility to the extent outlined in each party’s contract and boundaries are set. An alternative to avoiding such situations is to combine at least the Detailed Engineering with Fabrication Engineering and using a common platform to get the best results. We Are Here Design Integration with Fabrication Design integration starts at very early stages Ø Basic Design Ø Detailed Design & Approvals and then Ø Fabrication Engineering This will ensure limited manhours to be spent in Fabrication Engineering where-in only the following are generated Ø Fabrication Drawings Ø Nesting Programs Ø Fabrication/ Installation Sequences Ø Isometrics Ø Cable Routings Ø Materials Management Ø Etc. Etc. Our Current Project Construction of 2 Units GustoMSC NG 2500X Design Jack-Up Location Ras Al Khaimah, UAE Client Vahana Offshore Engineering, Procurement Services In-House Completion 2016 Scope EPC of 2 New Build Jack Ups Where we are Today Our company is only about 2 years, but yet we are adopting the best tools in all areas. We have a team of handpicked engineering staff who have excelled in this field in previous projects and we are in steering in the right direction. Key Drivers to Implementing Best Solutions Ø Self confidence Ø Management Support Ø Team Support Ø Others Perception Ø Client insistence In our Company everything is Positive ENGINEERING METHODOLOGY – P&IDS Ø Ø Ø Ø Create Symbols Drafting Piping and Instrumentation Diagram Compare and Update with 3D model 3D Integrator is used to check the integration of Line shown on Diagram and 3D Model HULL Modeling Using Hull Design for modeling the Vessel Block wise Ø Ø Ø Ø Ø Modelling Extraction of Shop Drawings Creation of Part for Manufacture Automatic Creation of Data for CNC Production Automatic Plate Nesting Outfitting Modeling Ø Ø Ø 3D Modelling for various Outfitting Discipline Outfitting designers can work concurrently with hull designers and can see the entire design as it evolves Automatic extraction of Isometric Drawing Steelwork Modeling Steelwork Modeling being used for improving the Outfitting Model and Drawing Production. Outfitting Supports Ø Ø Ø 3D Modeling for various Outfitting Supports Automatic extraction of Pipe Support Drawings Report Generation on Material Requirement Assembly Planning Ø Ø Ø Ø Build Strategy for hull and outfit parts as per Block sequence Ready Extraction of Assembly drawing Manufacturing Bill of Material as per block We use Assembly Planning for preparing the Assemblies Block wise which gives Shop Drawing with required Bill of Material Automatically by Block. Electrical Instrumentation Collaboration across the world Ø Allocate work to the most cost-effective locations Ø Work concurrently with other offices, subcontractors, vendors and partners The Future Ø Ø Ø Ø Ø Add on other modelling tools. 4D & 5D Modelling Reduce the residual manual interfaces. Setup offices in Cost Effective areas. Better Utilisation of Software THANK YOU Suresh Ramadoss
