DIG PINK VOLLEYBALL Anyone who has gone to Kent City Schools knows what October means; it’s breast cancer awareness month. Every fall sports team has a Dig Pink game to spread awareness and raise money for breast cancer research. Volleyball not only has a Dig Pink game, but their varsity Dig Pink tournament is one of the biggest sports events of the year. On Friday, October 2, almost everyone at school wore pink for the tournament which was the following day. The Lady Eagles went to the finals of the tournament, but unfortunately fell to Godwin Heights. They won the first set, but Godwin Heights won the second, then quickly conquered the third, which got them their first Dig Pink tournament win. At the tournament, three of our Kent City players Joseph Weeks At Reed City were mentioned especially for their game. Junior, Kassidy Heeringa, got first team, junior, Meghan Boyd, got special mention, and junior, Blaire Mortensen, got honorable mention. Over the past six years, Kent City has raised over $35,000 for breast cancer awareness. This year, the Lady Eagles raised $3,000 from the tournament alone! Thank you to anyone who bought a Dig Pink shirt, went to the game, and supported the Volleyball team! 3 JOURNALISM Kent City Journalism strives every month to inform the community about all the activities that are going on at school. We would like to thank everyone who has participated in putting this newsletter together. We would like to say a special thank you to Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Babbitt for taking pictures of our high school sporting events. HOMECOMING DANCE Homecoming week is a major event at Kent City High School. From the dress up days, float builds, homecoming royalty nominations, Friday class games, and the Friday night football game to the Saturday dance. Many students were happy the homecoming dance was held in the wrestling room, as years past. Janna Pant a senior said “It was nice to be back inside for our last homecoming, the wrestling room brings us memories of good and better times.” Many will have to agree with her. With help from a great DJ, creative décor and wonderful people, this year’s homecoming was a hit. For the class of 2016 this was a memorable night, a great start to the beginning of their last year. CLASS FLOATS This year’s classes for Homecoming 2015 did a great job incorporating the theme Pure Michigan into their floats. The freshman float was quite creative. It even included running water, for the effect of a waterfall. Job well done! The junior float was a light house with a pier and blue fabric for a water effect. Senior eagles’ float was the Mighty Mac, more commonly known as the Mackinaw Bridge. With lights strung on the bridges’ beams and cars 4 on the road that sure did make it a detailed float. Finally the float winner for Kent City Homecoming 2015 was the sophomore class. The sophomore float had a variety of different famous Michigan locations, Holland to Boyne Mountain and others in between. All grades put in a great effort building their floats which made for a fun and exciting Kent City Homecoming 2015. HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME Friday, October 9th was the Eagles Homecoming football game against the Mohawks! The Eagles went on the field in hopes to stop the Mohawks chance at a share of the CSAA title. The stands were filled, student section was booming, with spirit signs waving in the air, everyone chanting with the cheerleaders like they just weren’t scared! By the end of the first quarter, the Morley Stanwood Mo- hawks led by 12-0. At the time of the halftime festivities the Eagles trailed by 26-0. The Mohawks scored 14 more putting them up by 40. In the fourth quarter the Mohawks put up one more touchdown and PAT kick taking home a 47-0 victory. “Even though the outcome wasn’t the greatest, we still continued to play hard.” said senior football player Derrick Philips. “It was a fun and exciting experience; the competition was great! It feels nice to be able to say that we’re undefeated. I’m looking forward to next year’s game.” -Cassidy D (Powder Puff Games) POWDER PUFF On October 20, 2015, we had two games of powderpuff at KCHS. Freshmen vs. Sophomores and Juniors vs. Seniors. In a fierce battle, the sophomores came out with the W, beating the freshmen with a score of 20-6. Frontrunners in the sophomores vs. freshman game were Teanna McCuaig, Rachel Gubala and Haley Bracewell. In the juniors vs. seniors game, the juniors came out on top with a three-peat af- ter beating the seniors 6-0. On top in that game was Paige Mortensen with an interception that scored the winning touchdown. All four teams worked very hard during practice and gave it their all during the games. Great teamwork by all who participated and congratulations to the sophomores and juniors for dominating the 2015 powderpuff season. 5 SPIRIT WEEK The week of homecoming was amazing! The school halls were filled with laughter and good-natured competition. School spirit was shown by all classes. Many students showed their creativity and enthusiasm as they came up with many unique and daring costumes. Spirit week started off great! On Monday, students supported their favorite Michigan sport teams. Throughout the school, the most popular teams students represented were either Michigan or Michigan State. Many other teams were represented also. Such as the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, Whitecaps etc. Eagles of all grades went all out with blankets, hats, shirts, socks, and various inventions sporting their team. On Tuesday, the theme was Beach Day. During the day, I saw many different creative outfits that students came up with to wear. Some guys wore their swim trunks and girls wore their swimsuits over their clothes. Others had floaties on or carried pool noodles. One student even hand made a shark costume and I saw one guy wearing a dress. It was great to see everyone’s inventive beach outfits. Wednesday was Yooper day. It was not challenging for students to find camouflage, plaid, muck boots, fur hats or any item of clothing that represented Yooper’s. Participants even brought duck calls with them. This proved to be the easiest day and by far had the most participation. Most people probably already had most of these items around their house. Students would have blended in nicely in the Upper Peninsula. Thursday’s theme proved to be the hardest to dress up for. Students were challenged to dress up as someone famous from Michigan. A few examples of famous Michiganders are Madonna, Eminem, Kid Rock, Taylor Lautner, Bob Seger, David Spade, Tim Allen, Ted Nugent or Serena Williams. Most people dressed up as the famous singer, Madonna. There were a wide variety of Madonna inspired, colorful outfits. Eminem and Kid Rock were also commonly seen around the halls. It was obvious that the students who did participate put a lot of thought into their outfit. Finally, everybody’s favorite Spirit day Friday included many different dress up options as long as it included red, white and black clothing. People in every grade went all out to show their spirit as a Kent City Eagle. Like Yooper day, spirit day also had full participation from all students. Spirit day for many students is the most fun day to dress up for. On this day, students showed their creative side by painting their faces, spray painting their hair or applying temporary tattoos. Their outfits to go along with those things are also very creative and very unique. It’s safe to say, Spirit day is the day that students look forward to the most.
