Instead, it is the key to expanded business opportunities and reaching personal goals and professional growth. maintain a professional and attractive profile on such sites as LinkedIn, Hoey said that profile is not a substitute for meaningful personal contact. The Internet can be a trap, she suggested. Unemployment was at 9.7 percent, the state having lost 250,000 jobs to the recession, and the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund was broke. The department was hemorrhaging with fraud and too often the unemployed were being trained for jobs that were not in demand. Kelly Hoey, the renown chief marketing officer for Cuurio, a New York-based networking strategies company, was the keynote speaker at the Morris County Chamber of Commerce Women in Business luncheon this month. So Wirths took the same approach that made him a successful businessman in the private sector – he ran the DOL like a business. “The biggest thing I brought to Trenton was common sense,” he recently told the Government Affairs Committee of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce. “My biggest goal in my first four years was to get the UI Fund solvent,” he added. Wirths knew what he was doing. For nearly 20 years he owned two furniture companies. He helped found the Noble Community Bank, which today is part of Highlands State Bank. He served as freeholder director of the Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, as chairman of the Budget Committee and on the Capital Projects Committee. That business approach to running the DOL has proven fruitful. Building a better tomorrow As we close out 2014 my wish for all of you is a safe and happy holiday season. A special thanks to our members for another great year. You continue to provide leadership and volunteer spirit for the Morris County Chamber of Commerce. Many chamber seminars and programs are planned and executed by volunteers who participate in our key committees. They determine what the members want and they work with our staff to ensure we deliver results. Also, our board of directors and Members Council provides important leadership in ensuring that the chamber constantly has an eye toward innovation and serving the changing needs of our membership. We’re always looking for honest feedback from you on the value we provide and where we can improve. Please reach out to me if you can help us make 2015 better. We’re optimistic about the New Year and look forward to working with our members One of the major issues we continue to face as we seek to grow jobs in Morris County is our high vacancy rate in office parks throughout the county. Parsippany is our largest office market and we continue to see 30 percent and higher average vacancy rates at numerous office parks in the community. This compares with vacancy rates of 20 percent in Morristown and 13 percent in Jersey City. There are a number of reasons for this, including the recession that started in 2008, corporate consolidations and the changing building/space requirements of companies that employ people across Morris County. Our final major seminar for this year was an important presentation by Bill Brown and Brian Whitmer of Cushman & Wakefield and Debra Tantleff of Tantum on “A New Generation of Office Parks.” Attended by about 40 executives from the private sector and municipal and county officials, the presentation centered on the changing workplace and what companies are doing to attract millennials to their organizations. This includes more flexible hours, collaborative work areas, huddle rooms and open floor plans without private offices. These maximized interiors and amenities help to attract younger workers and employers are responding in new and innovative ways. They know that modern offices lead to collaboration and a boost in productivity. In the past few months I visited Ferring Pharmaceuticals in Parsippany and Reology in Madison, two great examples of companies which have invested millions of dollars in Morris County to completely revamp their office environments. Private offices have not completely disappeared but these places are different. They’re more conducive to informal collaboration and have informal meeting areas where small groups can come together to brainstorm ideas without going to a formal conference room. Since younger employees want to work in these new environments, recruiting talent becomes easier, silos are eradicated and collaboration rules the day. For the first time we have five generations in the workplace. But by 2020 millennials will comprise 50 percent of the workforce. Our challenge is that our physical infrastructure is in some cases 50 years old. The traditional office with hierarchical positioning of offices from the CEO down the ladder does not translate to the reality of the interests and needs of the new workforce. Communities must understand that the future workforce wants live, work and play options that don’t require major commutes or even the need for vehicles in some cases. Our office buildings need major changes. Communities may have to rezone certain areas to allow investors to create mixed uses that are attractive to employers and their employees. The chamber will continue to educate municipal leaders about what they have to do to make Morris County a preferred location for companies that are hiring the leaders of tomorrow. A M B E R O F C O M M E R C E Inside Edge... Paul Boudreau, president of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce, recently attended the dedication of the Ferring Pharmaceuticals new operations center in Parsippany. Aaron Graff, president & COO of Ferring, said the company is focused on growing its business in the United States in the months and years ahead. The company has a strong focus on research and commercialization of products in general and specifically pediatric endocrinology, gastroenterology, infertility and other areas, he added. Angela Kubisky, executive vice president of membership and marketing of the chamber, recently held networking education classes at accounting firm CohnReznick LLP and law firm Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland & Perretti, LLP, where she provided a combined 95 accountants and attorneys with the presentation “Networking for the Bottom Line,” a discussion about how to prepare for and follow up from a networking event and work a room while there. ............................................................ Businesses turn to video as sales tool By Rod Hirsch It seems everyone is plugged into their iPads, tablets, iPhones or laptop computers, a 21st century cultural phenomena not lost on businesses that want to connect with consumers. Electronic devices have replaced newspapers and other print media as the primary source of news, advertising and entertainment. Online ad revenues hit an all-time high in the United States in the first part of 2014 at a record $23.1 billion, an increase of 15 percent from the first half of 2013, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau. Consistent with this, web sites and social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, are being used strategically to sell products and services. Savvy businesses are hiring videographers and advertising agencies to shoot footage and package the product in a variety of formats – short, twominute clips for web sites and full-blown trade-show documentaries with narration and music. “In this day and age people don’t read anymore, they like to look at video and that’s just a great way to give an overview of a business,” said Walter Blau of Generic Brand Human, a fullservice video and photography studio in Morristown. Maureen Pethick, communications coordinator for the U.S. Equestrian Team Training Center in Gladstone, agreed. “We decided to do a video because we wanted to make our web site more interactive,” Pethick explained. The center hired Generic Brand Human of Rockaway for the project, which lasted eight months because the center wanted to showcase as many events as possible. A drone was used to shoot aerial footage. Generic Brand Human produced a two-minute version for the web site and a shorter version with no voice-over for use on social media. “We wanted to get the word out there, to show people who we are and what we do, to give them a tour of the facility,” Pethick said. 7 Public Service Electric & Gas hired Grey Sky Films of Rockaway to shoot a documentary chronicling improvements along a 43-mile power line in Morris and Sussex counties. The utility removed 1920-era transmission towers, replaced the aging structures with lower profile towers and installed upgraded wiring to boost capacity. “We thought a video was the best technology to use, not only to document the project but to share it and really effectively communicate what was involved, what was entailed,” explained George Sous, regional public affairs manager at PSE&G. Grey Sky created a variety of video products from the footage, according to Sous. “We used some of the footage to document the project itself,” he said. “Some of the footage served to educate new hires coming into PSE&G and third, we used footage for an investors’ conference in New York City to show some of the things the company was doing.” There are some keys to success when using videos to promote a business. “Keep it simple in terms of the message,” said Chris Vaglio of Grey Sky. “Don’t cram too much into one video. Less is more. “Leave them wanting more. Let them meet you to get more information, that’s the idea. That there are people behind the business, that’s the impression you want to leave behind,” he added. “When it comes to messaging think about who you are talking to, who will be using your products and services, what kinds of questions will they ask. These are all pieces of data that you can turn into content.” Blau recommends his clients show their face. “People like to see the owner, either voice and/or visual,” he said. “It gives them a comfort level. They can see they are dealing with the decision-maker, the one who has the blood, sweat and tears invested in the business.” M O M Ro r R rI i sS O nty U N “T B Yu s ine C H sAs MC o B nnecti E R O F C Co u o nC ” Accounting and Consulting O M E o Rr yC D iM r ect E Assisted Living CohnReznick LLP 4 Becker Farm Road, Roseland, NJ 07068 Phone: Erin Connolly-Kriarakis, 973-364-7804 Fax: 973-364-6678 www.cohnreznick.com CohnReznick LLP provides clients with forward thinking advice that helps them navigate complex business and financial issues.
