Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 7, 2016
“Depart from me Lord for I am sinful man.”
In today’s Gospel, we witness the call of Peter, Andrew, James and John. At the Sea of Galilee, Jesus calls
these set of brothers to lower their nets on the other side of their boat. They have been trying all night to catch
some fish without any luck. Peter takes the risk and heeds to Jesus’ instruction. He finds himself in awe. He
immediately recognizes something in Jesus that is beyond his imagination. Peter finds himself unworthy of
such an experience. Jesus insists and they ultimately leave everything and follow Him. What will it take for
us to do the same? Most of us can speak of a time when we have experienced a manifestation of God’s mercy
and love. We can also speak of our experiences of miracles that affirms us God’s consistent presence in our
lives. These are moments that put us in awe of God. But are these experiences enough for us to leave
everything and follow Jesus?
God knows who we are, what we have, what we can give, and who we can be. Yes we are unworthy of
such an invitation to be a follower and witness to the gospel, but God has called each of us. God hopes that
we will take that leap of faith despite not knowing what lies ahead. We need to have the same trust and
confidence that God has of us to follow Jesus all the way.
God Bless,
Fr. Brian Atienza
P. Brian Atienza

Annual Catholic Appeal
Awareness Weekend
The Annual Catholic Appeal is our annual
tradition that connects us to thousands of people
who need our help every day. This year, our Appeal
Weekend takes place two weeks from now on the
weekend of February 20th-21st. Last year, through
your generosity, our parish contributed $80,911.00
to the Appeal. Our 25% parish share was used to
support the works of our St. Vincent de Paul Society
and help send our youth to the World Youth Day in
Poland. This year funds from the Annual Catholic
Appeal will allow us to assist our less fortunate
neighbors through our St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Through our support, we can assure that many
vital social service programs continue to assist tens
of thousands of people in need, assist with the
formation of diocesan seminarians, and provide
need-based tuition assistance to deserving families
in our most economically-challenged communities.
Your gift makes a difference in someone’s life.
Please prayerfully consider what you can give.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF
ADULTS (R.C.I.A.)
Members of the RCIA process in our parish of
St. Joseph and St. Vincent de Paul, having
progressed in the faith and continuing in the
catechumenate process, will now be formally
accepted into a more intense preparation for the
sacraments of initiation which are celebrated at the
Easter Vigil.
Today at the 11:00am Mass, the catechumens
(unbaptized) and candidates (our baptized brothers
and sisters) will be presented to our parish
community in the “Rite of Sending”, in which our
community will have the opportunity to express its
approval of the catechumens and candidates, they
will then sign their names in the “Book of the
Elect”, and will be sent forth to the Bishop assured
of the parish’s care and support to celebrate the
diocesan “Rite of Election”, a formal celebration in
which the names written in the “Book of the Elect”
are called out before the Bishop. He then elects the
catechumens to full initiation into the Catholic
Church and the candidates into full communion.
The catechumens and candidates will celebrate
the “Rite of Election”, on the first Saturday of Lent,
February 13th at 7:30 pm, at the Cathedral of the
Blessed Sacrament.
Please pray that together with the catechumens
and candidates, we may be conformed more and
more to the image of Christ, in whom is our hope of
salvation.

Jesus said, “For I was hungry
and you gave me food, I was
thirsty and you gave me drink, a
stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me, ill
and you cared for me, in prison
and you visited me”.
This is the work of the St. Vincent de Paul
Society, but we need money to carry out this
mission. Please remember us as you consider your
pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal.
If you or someone you know is in need of help
with food, clothing or utility bills, please call our

SUPPORT PARENTS' RIGHTS
THE PROBLEM: Did you know that a
teenage girl (under 18) can't get a flu shot, a cavity
filled or an aspirin from a school nurse without a
parent's permission; but she can get an abortion
without even informing one parent!!
SOLUTION:A Par ental Notification law will
provide a notice to a parent 48 hours before an
abortion is performed! This is why we are collecting
signatures on a petition to put a Parental
Notification law on the 2016 ballot, so that it can be
voted on and passed by the voters!
We will be collecting signatures after all Masses
on the weekend of February 6th and 7th. If you
would like to help, please call Dee or Joe Madruga
at 916-685-5679.
Dine Out to Donate
Come join us at our monthly Dine Out to Donate
for the month of February 17th. Our next location
will be at Panda Express on Waterman and Elk

and dinner and support our World Youth Day
Pilgrims!
