Europe - Intrepid Travel
Europe
The perfect place to sail azure waters and dip your toes in history
Italy - Dom Morgan
Best of the best
Crown of Croatia
History? Shore thing!
Why sailing in Europe trumps everything
Travel like royalty on a beer budget
Ancient tombs and pirate raids
So you want to go to Europe, but want to do it
differently? Then jump on board one of our Europe
sailing trips and discover this culture-packed
continent from a whole new perspective. Meet
charismatic locals, eat in family-run tavernas, visit
historical sites and explore charming coastal towns.
Then mix it up with lazy days on deck, sunsets
over the sea, incredible swimming and world-class
snorkelling. Oh, you can also learn to sail if you like.
A popular destination for celebs and royalty, the
stunning Croatian coast beckons with its dazzling
scenery and bright-blue waters. Thought you
needed a pay-packet like Beyonce to get in on the
gig? Not at all. Set sail on the magnificent Adriatic
with Intrepid, stop at remote islands, swim at
pristine beaches and relax in utter bliss. What better
way to holiday like a royal without blowing your
budget. So go on, flip to page 24, your ... majesty.
Barely a stone’s throw off the south coast of France,
the Iles d’Hyeres Archipelago has a rich and
interesting history. The smallest island of the group,
Ile de Port-Cros, was the discovery site of ancient
Roman tombs and coins. Consequently, it was also
the stomping ground of Barbary pirates. In WWII,
‘Battle of Port Cros’ took place on its sandy shores
and after the war, an artist’s colony was established
amid the lush scenery.

Want to walk with the gods? Greek mythology has it that the Greek islands were home to many gods,

You don’t need to know your bowline knot from your anchor hitch to explore Italy’s
Tyrrhenian Sea. Just bring your bathers, a book and a desire for total relaxation.
ITINERARY... Day 1 Procida/Ischia Begin this Italian
sailing adventure in Procida, off the coast of Naples.
This tiny island has an array of restaurants with
delicious local cuisine, archaeological sites and
picturesque buildings in typically Mediterranean
pastel colours. Glide across the deep blue abyss and
disembark at neighbouring Ischia, the largest island
in the Bay of Naples. Perhaps shake off the sea legs
by exploring the famous Castello Aragonese – built
in the 1400s, this impressive fortress sits suspended
above the sea on a volcanic rock connected to Ischia.
Days 2-6 Sorrento/Pompeii/Amalfi/Capri Cast off
early, bound for the beautiful, clifftop town of Sorrento.
According to Greek legend, it was here that the
mythical sirens once lived and preyed upon the sailors
of antiquity with the allure of their beautiful song.
Jump on a train to the abandoned city of Pompeii.
Be mesmerised by this eerie ghost city, frozen in time
since that fateful day in AD 79 when Mt Vesuvius
erupted, burying 20,000 people and their homes under
a layer of ash. Peek into the lives of ancient Romans
and marvel at the well-preserved buildings, artwork
and pottery. Then set sail to stunning Amalfi, where
the city clings to dramatic cliffs and the lifestyle centre
around the call of the Mediterranean. It’s the perfect
place to ramble along the coast’s narrow trails and
take in breathtaking views of sparkling azure seas.
Then sail to the Isle of Capri to chalk up some quality
swimming and relaxation time on turquoise waters and
divine stretches of sand. Day 7 Procida This short and
sweet sailing adventure ends this morning in Procida, a
beautiful island that is still a well-kept secret.
Highlights
• Encounter the time capsule of Pompeii
• Experience the rustic charm of villages
along the Amalfi Coast
• Worship the sun on sublime beaches

Why so blue?
The majestic hue of the Blue Grotto

Grotto) sea cave. Explore the spectacular ruins of Villa
Jovis and chalk up some quality relaxation time on the

Cote d'Azur Sailing Adventure
TRIP CODE ASRM
8 days, Marseille to Nice
DEPARTURE
Go from one celebrated port to the next and uncover a side of France that only the
rich get to see on this sublime French sailing adventure.
ITINERARY... Day 1 Marseille Meet up with your
group this morning before transferring to the boat.
Alternatively, you could arrive a few days earlier
and take some time to explore this beautiful port
city. Days 2-7 Cote d'Azur It’s time to set sail – and
what better way to experience France than from the
relaxing viewpoint of the Mediterranean. The first
destination is the Iles d’Hyeres Archipelago, a group
of islands that is rich in woodlands, idyllic beaches,
walking paths and Roman history. Swim and snorkel
in the clear waters and soak in the natural beauty and
culture of this unique area. St-Tropez is next on the
cards – a summer playground for the rich and famous
that has a great deal of charm once you delve deeper
behind the glamour. Get among the action at a café
or bar, take to the coastal walking trails or chill out in
quieter La Ponche. Then leave the coast behind and
discover the Iles de Lerins – a small group of islands
with gorgeous beaches, clear blue water and a wealth
of history. Dine at a small restaurant run by monks
who serve wine grown in their vineyards, discover
the island that hosted the ‘man in the iron mask’ and
embrace the Mediterranean lifestyle while relaxing
on the beach. Close to Cannes, sail back to the French
coast and explore this much-lauded city. The beauty
of sailing is that each day is unique and, while we

have a destination to reach, if the weather changes or
something takes the group’s fancy, we are flexible on
the day's itinerary. Day 8 Nice Finish up this unique
sailing adventure this morning in delightful Nice. We
recommend spending a few more days here, as it’s a
vivacious city well worth exploring.

Your boat in Europe
If you’re after a traditional-style sailing adventure that balances time on the water with time spent on shore experiencing the
culture, history and cuisine of Europe, then you can’t go past our sailing adventures in the waters of the Mediterranean and
Aegean seas.
Typical boat layout
In Europe we use monohull yachts for our sailing adventures. As a guide, a typical 50-foot yacht for
eight travellers is equipped with four twin/double share cabins, three shared bathrooms and two
showers. A typical yacht layout is on the left, but please note that the yacht used is a guide only, so it
may not be exactly the same as pictured.
Kittys
What’s a kitty? You’ll notice in the fact box of our Europe sailing trips we list a kitty payment. This
payment is managed by travellers and used to purchase food for breakfasts, lunches and snacks. In
most cases there is money left over at the end of the trip, which can be divided up and returned to each
person or used towards a final celebratory dinner.

Skipper profile: Europe
Kutte Priesner, Cyclades Islands
Kutte consistently gets rave feedback from his passengers. His keen sense of humour, positive attitude
and extensive experience puts everyone at ease and makes for a great group dynamic. For those who
want to learn the sailing ropes, there is no better nor patient instructor.
“I love the freedom of sailing and enjoy being in nature. I learned sailing in a rubber dinghy with a small
sail, and after this first experience I became a sailing instructor in Corsica in 1975.
I have sailed in the Caribbean but I now mostly sail in the Mediterranean Sea. I am not much of a long
distance sailor – I like much more island hopping and exploring islands with their unique harbour
villages and beautiful bays.
I believe to really get the most out of your sailing adventure you must be flexible, forgiving, helpful,
authentic and trusting of the boat, skipper and team. Do everything with fun and think positive and
you will have an incredible experience.”
