DESTINATION OF THE MONTH:
Helsinki's Central Park
(Keskuspuisto) is a massive park
right in the middle of the city.
Covering more than 10 square
kilometers, the park begins at the
Olympic Stadium. The park is
more wild woodland than
manicured garden. It's loaded
with bike and walking trails and
other activity areas.
The Market Square (Kauppatori)
is the main planned and paved
square in central Helsinki. It is
one of the best-known outdoor
markets in northern Europe. It is
full of stands selling Finnish
foods, and tourist souvenirs, as
well as a few outdoor cafés. In
October, the famous herring
market takes place, and masses of
American cars meet at the square
every May 1st.
Akseli Gallen-Kallela
most important and certainly most
impressive painter. The GallenKallela house was built in 1911-13.
The house was opened to the public
as the Gallen-Kallela Museum in
1961. It contains a permanent
exhibition of Gallen-Kallela's own
paintings, graphics, and tools.
Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is a vibrant seaside city of
beautiful islands and great green parks. The city’s rhythm is
laid back yet at the same time refreshingly active in terms of
both the number and quality of restaurants and nightclubs.
Design, architecture, culture and shopping are all great
exploration angles and large park areas, forests, lakes, and the
coastline with numerous islands sprinkled off it make certain
there’s no shortage of natural presence.
Helsinki
Fact
Sweden’s King
Gustavus Vasa
founded Helsinki as a
new trading post to
compete for Baltic Sea
trade with Tallinn,
then called the
Hanseatic town of
Reval. The city was
actively built up
throughout the 17th
century, yet it
remained a somewhat
sleepy, wooden
housing town for a
long town.
.
The fortress of Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site and one of Finland’s most popular sights.
The beautiful islands of Suomenlinna are only a 15minute ferry ride away from Helsinki Market Square.
The Mannerheimintie Street runs northwest from
the Central Railway Station, across from the main
post office. The Central Railway Station, built in
1919, is worth a visit as it is the finest building by
renowned architect Eliel Saarinen, with a 48meter-high clock tower.
Finns even name pastries
after their poets! These
pastries originated in the
eastern province of Karelia.
Karjalanpiirakka or
Karelian pies, as they are
also known, fit into your
hand and melt in your
mouth. The crust was
traditionally made with rye
flour and filled with potatoes,
rice or carrots. They are
particularly delicious with an
egg butter spread on top!
