Grateful Patient Spotlight: Laura Bremer
Family Inspired by Center for Health
W
hen Dr. James Peters first
opened his practice in Napa
Valley, Laura Bremer, owner
of Bremer Family Winer y, was one of
the first to request a consultation.
Laura felt confident that Dr. Peters’
preventative health program could
benefit her entire family.
“Dr. Peters’ program fits a cross
section of people…there is something
for ever yone,” Laura says.
Now the Medical Director of
St. Helena Hospital’s Center for
Health, Dr. Peters meets with Laura’s
family regularly to explain how his
unique lifestyle program can help with
issues such as diabetes, weight
control and high cholesterol.
After five years of lifestyle counseling,
Laura’s mother, Ruth Mallor y, 89,
credits Dr. Peters for her good health.
“Mom works out four days a week,
takes no medication and has no pain,”
Laura says.
Just
as
encouraging,
Laura’s
husband’s diabetes is in check and
his medication level is lower now than
it has ever been.
“Things are a non-issue now,”
Laura says.
Laura says her family is sincerely
grateful for the exper t care they
received and encourage others to
par ticipate in Dr. Peters’ award-winning
TakeTen™ program that helps patients
take control of their health in as little
as 10 days.
“We would rather be well than need
to get well,” she says.
Ruth Mallory, 89, enjoys
Zumba fitness class in St. Helena.

St. Helena in Your Will
3 Ways to Touch a Life
With the Life You’ve Built
Using Estate Planning Tools to Leave a
Lasting Legacy of Support
Y
ou’ve worked hard to create security for you and your loved
ones. Perhaps you have tackled responsibilities such as
creating a will, cushioning a retirement nest egg or
purchasing life insurance. Did you know that these estate planning
tools offer simple, flexible ways to suppor t St. Helena Hospital
after your lifetime?
Remember us in your will or living trust. Including a gift to
St. Helena Hospital Foundation in your will or living trust,
known as a bequest, allows you to offer future suppor t without
giving up assets today. You can leave us a specific asset, a specific
dollar amount or a percentage of the residue of your estate. See
the next page for easy steps on making this type of gift.
1
Name us as beneficiary of your retirement account. Did
you know that when you name any individual other than your
spouse as beneficiar y of your retirement account, it will be exposed
to income taxes and possibly estate taxes, consuming more than
half of your gift? If you name St. Helena Hospital Foundation as the
beneficiar y, however, your estate will receive an estate tax
charitable deduction and we can take a tax-free withdrawal of the
account balance, making this a simple way to put the full amount
of your gift to use.
2
Leave us all or a portion of your life
insurance. Many people overlook life
insurance as a giving option, but it’s a
simple way to make a bigger difference than
you may have thought possible. You can
name St. Helena Hospital Foundation as
beneficiar y of a percentage of your existing
life insurance policy’s death benefit.

Caring for the Future—Project Transform
P
roject Transform is a bold plan for updating and
expanding patient room capacity at St. Helena Hospital
and remodeling facilities to support patient-centered
care with an eye toward innovation.
The project was set in motion by hospital leadership and
made possible by philanthropic partners in the community who
raised more than $9 million to match Adventist Health’s
contribution to total $18.5 million towards Project Transform.
These renovations will ultimately enhance every patient room
in the hospital, with a focus on several key areas that include:
• Main Hospital Lobby: Renovated in early 2011
• Intensive Care Unit: New finishes installation completed
earlier this year
• Orthopedic Department: To be relocated on the second
floor with plans for creating specialized rooms to provide
dedicated spaces for welcoming, waiting and receiving
orthopedic care
• Family Birth Center: Enhancements will include state-of-the-art
obstetric services; labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum
(LDRP) rooms; and a new nursery
•A
dventist Heart Institute: Plans to remodel and to relocate
on the fifth floor
• Medical Surgical Unit: Plans to remodel and refresh
every room
• New Family Gathering/Information and Meeting Areas:
Additional areas incorporated onto the fourth and fifth floor
elevator lobbies
• Windows: Renovations will include replacing exterior
windows for enhanced views of the Napa Valley landscape
What to Expect
The hospital will remain open during all phases of Project
Transform in 2013.
“The hospital is focused on minimizing any disruptions to
patients,” says project manager Don Rudy. “We look forward to
sharing these improvements with everyone who visits our
hospital campus.”
