July 2015 E-Newsletter We invite participants, volunteers, supporters and staff to enjoy this issue of our E-Newsletter. Please take a moment to read our recent news. Join Us on August 2nd Thank You to Our Volunteers! Please join us on Sunday, August 2nd, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at our guest bartender event at Growler & Gill in Nanuet. Four teams of guest bartenders will compete to see which team can earn the most tips, all of which will be donated to support our agency programs. Volunteers & Staff Celebrate at the Volunteer Recognition Event Harvest Moon Grand Reception to be held September 20th Please join us on Sunday, September 20th, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Town & Country Caterers, Congers, NY for the Harvest Moon Grand Reception and Silent Auction. The 2015 honorees are: TD Bank, N.A. Barbara Kohlhausen The Meals on Wheels Volunteer Appreciation BBQ, held on June 11, 2015, was a huge success. Over 200 volunteers and staff celebrated the loving and caring work accomplished by our volunteers. Meals on Wheels is very fortunate to have an amazing team of over 400 volunteers. We value each and every one of our volunteers and the unique skills and personalities that they all bring to us, whether they are with us a few hours a year or several hours a week. In 2014 our volunteers served over 28.00 hours preparing food in our commissary, delivering meals to homebound clients, assisting in our offices, pitching in at special events, and spending time with seniors in our centers. 2014 Agency Accomplishments Highlighted in Annual Report PDI Inc. The agency is proud to announce the publication of the 2014 Annual Report. The report reveals that 192,077 meals were produced and the agency benefited from 28,343 volunteer hours last year. All of the Meals on Wheels five senior centers enjoyed a boat trip on the Pride of the Hudson during the month of June. Our seniors enjoyed sunny skies and beautiful breezes as they took a two-hour tour on the Hudson. Leaving Newburgh, the boat sailed by West Point, Bannerman Castle and other points of interest while seniors enjoyed the sights and a delicious boxed lunch. A good time was had by all! Volunteer Spotlight: Judy Motz Judy Motz volunteers regularly for Meals on Wheels - helping in our administrative offices, at our Golf Outing and the Bill Fortune Run and even serving soup at our monthly Ladles of Love program. Judy says she has "become part of the Meals on Wheels family," and we agree! The excitement mounted this past June 4th as the five agency senior centers held their annual Wii Bowling Tournament at the North Rockland Senior Center in West Haverstraw. Each of the five centers sent their top four players in what turned out to be a highly competitive tournament. All centers put their best foot (and arm!) forward as they pursued the coveted title of 2015 Champions, but in the end the Clarkstown/Pearl River Senior Center team pictured above was victorious. Seniors: start practicing now as the 2016 tournament is guaranteed to be just as much fun as this year's! Recent Grants Received People's United Community Foundation Alzheimer's Foundation of America People's United Bank Community Foundation has generously donated $4,000 in support of the agency's Thank you to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America for a generous $5,000 Phyllis & Milton Berg Respite Care Homebound Meal Delivery Grant. This grant will benefit Program. This grant will help the participants and caregivers us provide meals for those in of the Adult Day Care of need and will truly make a Rockland. difference for Rockland seniors. Alzheimer's Association a Great Resource The Alzheimer's Association, Hudson Valley/Rockland/Westchester, NY Chapter, offers educational programs, a helpline, support groups, care consultation, professional training and more! Driver of the Month Congratulations to the June Driver of the Month, Michael Brookins! Meals on Wheels Programs & Services of Rockland is very pleased that on June 15th Rockland County Executive, Ed Day, announced that the agency is one of the 2015-2016 recipients of a Community Development Block Grant, which is administered by the County's Office of Community Development. Meals on Wheels' grant is for $25,000 for the Homebound Meal Delivery Waiting List Relief Program. KPMG Volunteers Deliver Meals and Smiles! On June 25th 28 KPMG Global Services Center associates delivered a nutritious meal, a warm smile and a safety check to 120 homebound seniors. Clarkstown North SAMs Club Students Deliver! Meals on Wheels Volunteer Coordinator, Sharon Martini, accepts a check from Clarkstown North SAMs Club Students. The Clarkstown North High School Students Assisting Meals (SAMs) Club proudly present a check for $2,000 to the agency last month. The students held various fund raising events throughout the year to help support Meals on Wheels. Being part of a student run service club such as SAMs is a great way to get involved in the broader community!
