Year. December is always a
busy month, trying to fit 4wheeling in between shopping,
wrapping, decorating, cooking, visiting, and all of the
other hoopla which surrounds
the holidays. However, we managed to squeeze in 14 runs during
the month which prompts a big thank you to the trail bosses for
leading these runs. Speaking of trail bosses, mark your calendars
for January 17th for our next trail boss meeting at the County
Library, 10:00 am.
We also gave generously to Toys for Tots and the donated food
items brought to the December meeting were donated to Saint
Vincent De Paul, both organizations were extremely grateful for
our donations. Speaking of donations, our 50/50 winner for
December, Dave Opperman, donated his winnings to the Food for
Kids program. Bravo Dave!
I hope you have been enjoying the pictures posted on our website.
If you have any you would like to include you can e-mail them to
me at maclean@havasu4wheelers.org . A select few from each run
should suffice as we only have so much room on the site. And
remember, these photos are made public so don‟t send anything
you don‟t want the whole world to see!
Now that January is here we‟ll start off 2012 with a bang. Friday
January 6th will be Andy Lucas‟ first AED training for the New
Year. It‟s at the County Library at 10:00 am, and if you haven't
taken advantage of this program that the club offers, or if it‟s been
a while since you have taken the training course please consider
attending. The Havasu 4-Wheelers have two AED‟s and we should
have as many members as possible trained to use them. We
haven‟t had any need to use them as of yet and hopefully we never
do, but it‟s really cheap insurance.
January also brings us our annual holiday party, so LET‟S
PARTY! This will be a fun evening filled with games, prizes, and a
few surprises. It‟s not just a dinner; it‟s an entire evening of dining,
dancing, and tons of fun which include the 4-Wheeler of the Year
presentation and the trail boss recognition. The theme is “luau” so
break out those Hawaiian shirts, or as we like to call them “Havasu
Formal Wear”. If you haven‟t turned in your reservations it‟s not
too late. The form is on the website, and you can print it out and
send it in to the address on the form. I do hope to see everyone
there. Rodger and Diana Delk have pulled out all the stops on this
party, and we deserve to kick up our heels, and maybe even do the
hula!

Ram’s Peak via Highline
In Memory of a friend and fellow
Havasu 4 Wheeler
O
n December 5th we had 8 jeeps that met at Home
Depot at 9:30 am. We proceed to the south end of
the airport and went up a canyon to hit the Highline trail. I had told everyone to look out for long horn
sheep in this area. We had only gone about a 1/2 mile
when we spotted 8 sheep. We were able to see them up
close and took pictures. We continued on and stopped at
You Go falls and about 5 jeeps played on the falls with
no mishaps. We found a sheltered area for lunch out of
the wind and then continued on to Ram‟s Peak. To my
surprise we had little to no wind at the summit and a
beautiful blue-sky view. I would like to thank Ron
Satterfield for being our tail gunner.

November 30, 2011
hat a great day for a jeep run. Sixteen jeeps,
twenty-two members along with two prospective
members and eight guests made the trek to Cat
Tail Cove for a day in the desert. From the Wall of Death
to Geri‟s Jump to the obstacles on the way to our lunch
area close to the Bill Williams River, no one shied away
from trying everything the run had to offer. Many of our
folks took the harder obstacles with great ease and
pleasure. On our way back to the air-up point, Snake
and Willie Williams led a small group through the Bowling
Alley while the rest of us watched from above. All-in-all
this was a great run and everyone enjoyed the day. Much
thanks goes to several people, Snake Williams and Steve
Perry for spotting, Ladell Olson for taking care of the
AED, Steve for tailgunning and to my navigator, Bob
Carson for keeping me on the correct path, although we
did have a couple of “jeep inspections” along the way.

O
n Wednesday, December 7, six jeeps filled with
thirteen H4W members and guests left Terrible‟s
for a day of bouncing around in the desert north of
Lake Havasu City. After stopping at an area along the
rail tracks that has been determined to be a burial area of
hobos that rode the trains in the past, we moved on to the
gypsum mine mountain. Along the way we stopped to
check a geocache and found it intact. At the gypsum mine
we took pictures and viewed the landscape. From there
we traveled to the Warm Springs Wilderness area and
had lunch. After lunch our group crossed the wash and
looked at the petroglyphs that abound on the cliffs and
ledges. When we finished looking at the wonders of the
past we made our way over the very rocky trail to our airuppoint where the run ended. Mike Yahrmarkt served as
tailgunner and Bob Carson was the navigator. Many
thanks to them and those that braved another trip with
me as run leader.

The Ridges
uesday, December 6th the skies could not have been
bluer or the trail conditions any better as a group
of 10 jeeps began the Ridges run north of Bullhead
City. We aired down at the trail head north east of town
on the south side of highway 68. As I slid from my Jeep I
saw smoke blowing from beneath it and smelled an odor
of something burning and my heart sank. As I was
thinking the worst, Ladell had already grabbed his
blanket and was crawling beneath my Jeep searching for
the source. The smoke soon disappeared as did the smell
and the source remained a mystery. Decidedly undaunted
Chuck proceeded to air down as I disconnected the sway
bars and we were soon rolling down the trail.
About 5 miles into the excursion one 4 wheeler
unfortunately found the first major hill to be too much for
her jeep sans articulation. At that point we were less than
a quarter mile from the lunch location and a Good
Samaritan in our party who had not yet climbed the hill
offered to escort her out to the highway and then rejoin
our group for lunch. Tail-gunner Olson volunteered to
remain at the base of the hill until the good Samaritans
returned. That seemed like a good idea at the time, but
what we expected to be a ten minute excursion for them
exceeded 1 hour when the GPS-less escort got lost!
Numerous attempts to contact them by CB and phone
were frustratingly futile while our group finished lunch
and patiently waited to continue the run. At last the red
sheep (Jeep) was sighted with binoculars approaching our
location. The driver and passenger were welcomed back
to the fold but informed their lunch would have to be
devoured on the trail! (Hopefully they didn‟t consider us
unappreciative of their ordeal.) We were able to continue
the beautiful run uneventfully.
Trail boss‟s lesson learned: Never assume good intentions
mean a lack of limitations or unforeseen frustrations.
Remember “Murphy” comes in many disguises. A few of
the Ridges veterans were asking themselves: “Is the
Ridges run cursed?” Well, only time will tell. Thanks to
all of you who have the spirit to make the Jeeping
experience complete with stories to share and embellish!

STATE LAND RECREATIONAL USE PERMIT
Subject to terms and conditions
Arizona State Trust Land is not Public Land!
A „Recreational Use Permit‟ is temporary and revocable and does not permit commercial, competitive or
group events. Lands leased for agriculture, mining, commercial, or military purposes are not open to
recreational use. Other State Trust Lands may be closed to some or all recreational uses due to hazardous
conditions, dust abatement, in coordination with the Arizona Game & Fish Department or based on certain
State, County or Local laws or ordinances.
Please visit www.land.state.az.us for details on current closures.
An „Individual Permit‟ allows the signatory limited privileges to use State Trust Land for some recreation.
Recreation under this permit is limited to hiking, horseback riding, picnics, bicycling, photography,
sightseeing, and bird watching. Camping is restricted to no more than 14 days per year. Off-Highway
Vehicular travel on State Trust Land is not permitted without proper licensing.
A „Family Permit‟ shall extend the same privileges and responsibilities of the ‘Individual Permit’ to a family
unit; limited to 2 adults and children under 18 years of age.
Responsibilities
The holder of an Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) Recreation Permit (Permittee) shall respect the land,
the rights and improvements of other authorized users, and exercise appropriate discretion to protect native
plants, cultural and historic sites and the environment. Permittee shall stay on existing and designated roads
and trails. Permittee shall comply with all Federal, State, County, and Municipal laws and ordinances, while
on State Trust Land.

AIR QUALITY NOTICE
In addition to current closures by the State Land Commissioner, many cities &
counties now restrict the operation & parking of motorized vehicles on unsurfaced
roads and vacant lots. Your Arizona State Land Recreation Permit requires you to
obey all laws within the relevant jurisdiction. Check with the County and/or City
Law enforcement to determine what rules apply.
The Permittee shall not use State Trust Land that is closed by the State Land Commissioner. The Permittee
shall not: disrupt plant and wildlife on, blaze trails across, visit historic and prehistoric archeological sites on,
or remove natural products from State Trust Land. The Permittee shall not cause any refuse or allow any other
foreign objects to be deposited on State Trust Land. The Permittee shall not discharge a firearm on State Trust
Land, except pursuant to lawful and licensed hunting.

RECREATIONAL PERMIT TERMS AND CONDITIONS: By signing below, you agree that:
1. This Permit does not include any implied rights to use any land other than State Trust lands. You are
responsible for obtaining any other permits (state, federal, local) necessary.
2. You will comply with all laws, rules, regulations and ordinances. Posting is not required for these
provisions to be enforceable.
3. You will obey directives from State Land Department Staff and/or law enforcement officials, including
but not limited to all directives attached hereto.
4. All travel is restricted to existing roads and trails. A one time use or single set of tracks does not constitute
a road or trail.
5. Recreational motorized vehicles may not be operated within ¼ mile of any building (occupied or not),
paved surfaces (roadways, etc.), or stock tanks (wet or dry), or within any area Closed by the State Land
Commissioner.
6. You will leave gates either open or closed as they are found. No fences will be cut or laid down.
7. You will not harass livestock or wildlife nor damage, destroy or remove any livestock or wildlife
improvements or facilities (e.g., windmills, stock tanks, fences, corrals, wildlife watering facilities, etc.)
8. You must completely remove all litter and refuse.
9. Human waste shall be confined to a portable toilet or slit trench which will be covered to ground level
upon closing camp. Waste from portable toilets shall be removed from site and disposed of properly.
10. Recreational camping is limited to no more than 14 days per year. A campsite must be at least ¼ mile
from any livestock or wildlife water catchments, tanks, drinkers, etc. Abandoned campsites are to be left
clean.
11. Campfires are to be thoroughly extinguished. You will comply with all fire restrictions and fire closure
information issued by the Arizona State Forester.
12. By acceptance of the permit, you agree to indemnify and hold the State harmless from and against all
liabilities, obligations, damages, penalties, claims, causes of action, cost, charges and expenses, including
attorney‟s fees and cost, which may be imposed upon, incurred by, or asserted against the State by reason
of any accident, injury or damage to any persons or property occurring on or about the State Trust land
or any portion thereof resulting from the use of the permit.

en jeeps met at the top of Challenger on a bright
crisp windless 40 degree morning. We aired down
and had our drivers meeting during which we had
a moment of silence for Rick Burke who had passed away
the week before. Rick had signed up for this run. We
started the run at 8:30. We had a good enjoyable run
except for the bad washboards in Standard Wash. The
obstacle at the desert overlook was handled nicely by this
good group of jeepers. After having a pleasant lunch at
the corral, we arrived at Havasu Heights at 1:40 and aired
up. Special thanks to Ron Satterfield and Tom Bunnell for
helping trim the brush on the trail the week before. Also,
thanks to Ron for carrying the AED and to Tom for being
the tail gunner.

Turquoise Mine Run,

December 17, 2011
hirteen Jeeps made this run on a spectacular
December day. We left the scenic turnout, drove
down and crossed he Parker Dam then headed
back north. The scenery in these largely volcanic
mountains was wonderful as usual and was enhanced by
the sight of several burros in different areas along the way
plus the frosting on the cake, or more accurately the
mountains, was the sight of 5 sheep in Whipple
Wash. The 4 adults and one youngster not only came
down from their lofty perch but crossed the road maybe
40 or 50 yards in front of us and climbed up the other
side. Thanks to the sharp eyes of the ever vigilant Trixie
for the initial sighting.
All our drivers did exceptionally well including some
beginners who climbed some scruffy hills. They will make
great members.
Unlike on some runs, there were no rollovers and nothing
broke. Mike Yarmarkt did a flawless job as tailgunner. Thanks Mike, Trixie and all you good drivers!

Vampire Mine-El Supremo

T
hirteen Jeeps and 25 Jeepers celebrated the
Winter Solstice with a trip to the Buckskin
Mountains east of Parker. First up the narrow
rocky trail to the Vampire mine. The scary climb is the
worth the great view once past the crest and on down to
the mine. Then on down to have lunch on the sandy
bank of the Bill Williams River. As we sat there I
thought, this is like a perfect late September day in
Wisconsin with a clear blue sky and golden aspens
reluctantly dropping their leaves in preparation for
their winter rest-but it's December in Arizona. It was a
really spectacular day.
Then on to El Supremo for some challenges. Thanks to
the skillful spotting eye of Jim Bowen, all passed even
the most difficult of the rocky areas with no hits, scrapes
or dents. Good driving even by some inexperienced
drivers and the ever precise line picking by Jim made it
a great run.
Jim pointed out the group on the way home that they
had just experienced the difference between a 3.5 run at
the beginning of the run list and one at the end of the
list. Even though they are all 3.5 runs, they are in the
group
in
order
of
difficulty.
Mike Yahrmarkt turned in another of his flawless
performances as tail gunner and again, no Jeeper left
behind. Thanks everyone.

uesday December 20th saw fifteen jeeps, twenty
members, and five guests head out from Terrible‟s to
explore Eagle Tail Pass in the Sacramento
Mountains west of Needles. On the way the group stopped
at the Topoc Maze geoglyphs - significant spiritual and
cultural ground markings created by ancient Mohave
Indians. Surprisingly the wind came up and the
temperature dropped about 10 degrees– Burrrr! The group
then continued on to Needles and began the off road trek
west toward the pass. We made a few stops along the way to
examine various mining activities. Once on the east side of
the mountains we continued until the lunch buzzer sounded.
This part of the desert sees few visitors so “perfect solitude”
would be a great descriptor for the area. The wind calmed
slightly but the temperature was in now in the mid 40‟s. We
then proceeded back east through Monumental Pass and
stopped to examine a US Govt survey pin with the date of
1922. Once back at US 95 the group aired up and departed
east for Arizona and home. “Thanks” to Steve & Kathy
Perry for tail gunning, Rodger & Renee Melton for carrying
the AED, and the photos by Penny Leistiko and Jerry
Melvin. No Cow Bell nominations to report.

Snake Pit & Floods Folly
D
ecember 19th 2011, nine jeeps turned out for this
run, and after a brief drivers meeting, we were
on our way.
There were three jeeps that did the PIT, which is the
first challenge on this run, and the rest of us took the go
around. Upon arriving at the second obstacle, my
thoughts were “oh my, it‟s washed out, and there is no go
around”. Steve Perry spotted me up and over, and then
it was a matter of me getting the others over it. Well that
worked out O.K., except for our guest who was driving a
YJ, and he folded up a left front leaf spring, putting him
out of commission. Ed Heil offered him a ride for the
rest of the run, leaving his jeep at this location. The next
obstacle was also a challenge as the rock wall/ledge on
the left side that we normally climb, was almost nonexistent, and we kept slipping down into a large hole,
which tipped the vehicle into the rock wall, and a few
windshield frames ended up with some rock rash, however with such a good group of drivers, we all made it.
The rest of this run remained pretty much the same, the
challenges were still a lot of fun, and I think all had a
good time.
A special thanks to Mr. Dave Opperman for tail
gunning, Steve Perry and Ed Heil for their assistance.
And that is the great thing about the club….all of our
members are so willing to help.

extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.

EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.

EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.

EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure.
Substantial sections of single lane.

MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a
rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop
-offs and tight clearance between rocks.

HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. 33” tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing.
Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.

HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, Some strapping/winching. Very
challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.

DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up
axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.
