Feb. 25th residents Corner January has come and gone and it is time to start thinking about events for this month. Last month, Reda Trumbo and her committee put together a great Holiday Party for our Club. I am sorry that Geri and I missed it, but family issues led us back to Oklahoma City for that weekend. Thank-you Reda and your group for your efforts! Charles Leipart Our desert will be a little cleaner this month thanks to Bruce Spiers and the volunteers who will take the time on Feb. 25th to remove debris from the area. It is hard to believe that people are so careless and thoughtless as to trash our landscape. Thanks goes to Dennis Callaghan, our Run Chairman, for his work in handing out shirts to those Club Members who led runs last year. Also, thanks to the members who led runs and to those who took steps to become run leaders. As we look to this month, keep in mind that our annual garage sale will take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, February 18, 19 and 20th at Craig and Karen McGowan‟s residence located at 3174 North El Dorado. Please help by donating items for this sale and also by donating your time to help set up, price and work the sale. The money we make from this event helps us donate to trail preservation activities, local charities and our Club. February is also when we will be looking for members to step up and take the reins as officers for the 2010-2011 year. There are so many talented people in our group with so much to offer, why not step up and take the plunge and let one of the following know that you are willing to serve: Curt Frilot, Nomination Committee Chairman or one of the Committee Members, Tom Fulmer, Chuck Guibord, Diana Delk or Lou Ann Rawls. If you applied for and received a State Land Permit last year, this might be a good time to check to see when it needs to be renewed. Remember Valentine‟s Day is February 14 (as well as Statehood Day for Arizona), so in closing, Happy Trails to You. Charles Ram Peak/Scott’s Well 12/29/2009 F or second time in 10 days we did Ram Peak, it was a cold morning when 10 jeeps met at Terrible‟s to begin the run. No-one on the run had done it before so it was a new experience for everyone. We aired down at Franconia Road, while we where airing down a search and rescue team stopped and said someone was lost in the area, there was a command center trailer and several other vehicles. At first they were going to hold us up but decided to let us go and to keep our eyes open for anyone out there and to call 911 if we saw anyone, which we didn't. It proves you shouldn't go in the desert alone. Mark your Calendar for Havasu 4 Wheeler’s trip to Tombstone, AZ “The Town too Tough to Die” March 14 — 20, 2010 Contact Charles Leipart for details NOHVCC CREATES VIDEOS TO HELP RIDERS PROTECT TRAILS The National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) has created a Public Land Advocacy Video Workshop series with help from Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A. via their OHV Access Initiative, the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC), the Specialty Vehicle Institute of American (SVIA), and the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA). The workshops are designed to give riders the skills they‟ll need to keep trails open in their areas; covering everything who the enthusiasts are, planning a trail system, writing effective comments, moving forward from route designation, and much more. The trip down Franconia Road was smooth but dusty, once on the trail to Scott‟s Well the dust went away and it began to warm up, the rest of the trip went well with no problems. Everyone enjoyed the trip to Scott‟s Well which is a narrow trail with some rocks and a small squeeze, from there we went across the desert to our lunch spot then on to Ram Peak. There were alot of oohs and aahs making our way to the summit as the trip up there is fun and scenic. We ended the run at Havasu Heights where we aired up. The series consists of 14 easy to watch sessions ranging from 15 to 30 minutes each. The content is based on NOHVCC‟s successful onsite workshop sessions with NOHVCC topic experts. The sessions are designed to give the people who can‟t participate in an on-site workshop or a webinar the tools they need to help keep their trails open. Thanks to everyone for coming and a big thanks to Sue and Chuck Guibord for tailgunning. Mike Yahrmarkt, Trail Boss Russ Ehnes, Executive Director of the NOHVCC said “These are tight economic times and we need to take advantage of technology to help riders get the information they need. This program is helping us reach thousands of OHV activists and riders who otherwise wouldn‟t have a chance to take part in a NOHVCC workshop. This may be one of the best tools that we have created so far for not only the enthusiast‟s toolbox, but for program managers as well.” The workshop modules were developed in cooperation with the American Motorcyclist Association, BlueRibbon Coalition, Motorcycle Industry Council, Off-Road Business Association, Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, and United Four Wheel Drive Associations. Photo by: Sue Guibord “Sunshine” If you know of anyone in the club who might need some cheering up, please call Trixie Kautzmann at 855-6383. She will be happy to send cards for any occasion on behalf of the entire Havasu 4 Wheelers membership. Trail Talk To order a DVD, e-mail us at trailhead@nohvcc.org or call us at 800-348-6487. Ed. -2- February 2010 Public Lands Committee Monthly Report Safety Committee “Trail Talk” Safety Rant of the Month – “FIRE! Save the Love of Your Life!” It’s that time of the year again as we Havasu 4 Wheelers air up sleeping tires and dust off the equipment. One item of critical importance is your club required serviceable fire extinguisher. A year of off roading and rattling around can pack down its load of dry chemical power into a solid rock. And it will and does happen. Now that you have a brick of dry chemical that won’t come out of the extinguisher’s nozzle if you ever need it, what to do? Don’t call 9-1-1 - just grab a soft rubber mallet and gently tap the sides of the extinguisher as you turn it in your hand. This is also the proper time to look at its inspection tag to determine if it is also due for recharging service. Does the gauge show “in the green”? No problemo, there are fire extinguisher service companies right here in Havasu. So do the right thing and make this a mandatory part of your seasonal preparation. How’s it work? Pull pin, Aim low at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, Sweep the stream from side to side J im Bowen, accompanied by Darryld Kautzmann and Bruce Speirs, met with Amanda Dodson, the local BLM geologist, to discuss continuing the very successful mine shaft safety fencing project. Several very dangerous and very accessible mine shaft openings still pose grave threats to overly curious desert explorers. We agreed to conduct two survey missions in early February and then schedule the work based on our findings. As always the great volunteer spirit of our H4W members will ensure this season‟s project will be successful. Standby for announcements on future dates and locations. The BLM also inquired if we would like to assist with ”interpretative” efforts for some very significant but unmarked and threatened Indian ruins and artifacts areas. These efforts will consist of placing signage, some fencing, and possibly other protective features. This initial discussion will be followed up in late February with more details. Again volunteers will be requested for this work which should prove to involve some fascinating areas and materials. Jim Bowen, Chairman Dry chemicals discharged from multipurpose (ABC) extinguishers are corrosive so clean it off everything (or what’s left). The Jeep you save may be your own! Trail Talk -3- February 2010 Gold Springs Run A Jan. 13, 2010 great time was had by all 12 Jeeps! We left the kiosk in Standard Wash and took a dust free trip (thanks to the recent rains) up by the Manitowoc Mine to where we joined “Hawks Nest Trail”. No one had any trouble with the fun rock and boulder “navigating” on the trail. Lunch was in a beautiful wide spot in a wash before “Butch‟s Bump”. After lunch, a few minutes of excitement were had by all of us, as the run leader did a perfect demonstration of what can go wrong if you do not have a spotter and take the “wrong line” up “Butch‟s Bump waterfalls”. As he stood his Jeep on it‟s right corner and laid it on it‟s right side—at least a dozen people sprang into action to “help”—they all ran forward with cameras to capture the moment! The leader was able to winch himself upright and up the falls with amazingly—no damage— except to his pride! We then made our way across the top of “The Maze trail” and then over to the last part of “Rattler Trail” where we had 3 members practice using their winches to climb up “Black Falls” while the rest of us watched. If was a fun and interesting, and educational day! Thanks Cal Bowman for tail-gunning! Jim Bowen, Trail Boss Gold Springs Run The Rest of the Story O As they entered the Maze and approached Butch‟s Bump, the Trail Boss mentioned that he had climbed this falls 40+ times and had successfully spotted hundreds of jeeps over it. While he studied his line, he stated, “this falls can be done without lockers” and he proceeded to demonstrate. Carefully he eased his jeep up the falls, when it started to lift and bounce several times. He backed off and tried again, a second and then third time, with resulting lifting and bouncing. Still unable to complete the climb he said “I am going to try to the left” Possibly a bit frustrated with 12 jeeps watching, he forgot the center of the original line had washed out and left a bowl. As he started up the new line, still without lockers, or spotter, the jeep behind yelled on the CB,” don‟t do it”. With the rear wheel now in the bowl and foot on the gas, the jeep suddenly stood on its spare tire and started over. Sliding slightly to its right, the front flair caught on a rock ledge and held the jeep in an upright position, stopping it from going completely over. Members of the group ran forward to help, many with cameras. Quickly a strap was attached to hold the vehicle from slipping. A jeep took the go around and the Trail Boss‟s winch was attached. Gently he winched himself to the waterfall surface and crawled over. Inspection showed no glass or body damage. Both the driver and passenger (on his first ever jeep ride) were unharmed. Despite the Trail Boss‟s claim that this was a planned and carefully orchestrated, safe demonstration of what not to do, the group on the spot, unanimously nominated him for the cowbell. All remaining jeeps were then successfully spotted up the waterfall. Following the demonstration, the group continued, with three jeeps winching Black Falls. The run concluded near the Scenic turn out, with all jeeps, drivers and passengers intact. n Wednesday, January 13, the Trail Boss held a driver‟s meeting for 12 jeeps at Standard Wash. “Safety first”, he stressed, “fun second”. He went on to emphasize “should anyone have a problem, stop immediately and ask for help, we won‟t make fun of you. Should your jeep start jumping or lifting, immediately back off. If you are unable to climb a waterfall or obstruction after several tries, put on your lockers, ask for a spotter, or go around.” Written for Trail Boss Jim Bowen By run participant, Darryld Kautzmann The group proceeded onto the early part of Gold Springs, a portion of the trail developed by Dennis Kreuzenstein. At the first falls, the Trail Boss & several jeeps attempted the climb, but were unable to clear their front bumpers. One jeep was high enough & easily crawled up & over. Another cleared the front, but did not have the additional transmission fluid to pull the jeep over the edge. Wisely the group detoured. Moving on, the run passed through Hawk‟s Nest with one strapping, but no other problems. Upon turning east, down Whipple Wash we found the wash almost unrecognizable due to the recent heavy rain. Lots of trees and boulders rearranged and still a small, steady trickle of water. The rearrangement of the terrain made what was formerly a 3.0 level run into at least a 3.5. Nice going trail boss! In spite of finding a much higher level of difficulty than anticipated, all did very well. We did a little strapping and helped each other so that it was a great run and a good learning experience for many, including the trail boss who learned new respect for mother nature. The Cow Bell I love this Bell! The coveted ding-dong goes to “we don’t need no stinking lockers” Jim Bowen Thanks to Dennis Dietzel for tailgunning. Andy Lucas, Trail Boss K2 Run Report K Earn Dollars for the Club’s Community Service Projects January 25, 2010 2 is always an interesting and scenic run. Many say it is the most scenic run close to LHC as far as mountains and vista are concerned. With the recent rains a quickly scheduled run was planned to take advantage of the possibility of water running down the stream bed used to approach the base of the climb up “K2 Trail”. The trip out Standard Wash and up over the “Back of Crossman trail” was beautiful and dustless thanks to the recent rains. The trip up K2 was made after lunch at the corral. To our disappointment there was no “running water” to drive through. Instead, mother nature left a few damp spots, and re-arranged many of the rocks! The views from up top were spectacular as usual with views all the way from Parker Dam to Bullhead to Kingman area. The trip down and out to Havasu Heights went with out any problems. Thanks Don Flood for tail-gunning. Please remember to shop at Basha’s & earn dollars that will be used for the H4W’s Community Service projects. How it works: Basha’s will assign a 5-digit identification number to your Basha’s Thank You Card and donate one percent of the total sales, up to a $2500 donation, that are linked to the H4W identification number 23211. RATING DESCRIPTION 1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades. 2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving. 3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane. 3¼ MODERATE: Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks. 3½ HARDER MODERATE: 33” tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. For experienced drivers. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated. 3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Same as above with both differentials locked, Some strapping/winching. Skilled, experienced drivers only. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances. 4 DIFFICULT: Same as above with belly up, 4:1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Possible body damage. 5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
