As the TV announcer says-“Are you ready for some football?” Well, “are you ready for some 4 wheeling?” Mother nature has been at work this summer with the sudden and intense rains we have received to rearrange and modify some of our favorite obstacles on our trails. Several of our members were out this past week “checking out” some of our favorite trails. Waterfalls have been made “more challenging” with small to large holes excavated out at the bottoms, shelf roads have been made narrower with parts washed out. It looks like mother nature has a “sense of sport” as far as 4 wheeling is concerned! And the annoying “giant washboard whoop di doos” have been smoothed out better than is possible with a road grader! The Hualapai Mountains between LHC and Kingman received over 10 inches of rain in one month alone! It will be interesting to see what all the water has done to some of the roads in the mountains—and what kind of maintenance they will need to make them safe but still challenging! We are at the end of 7 years of work with the local BLM to inventory and analyze the trails in the immediate area surrounding Lake Havasu City. The “final appeal period” will end November 4th. We have had several people dedicate the time to “save the trails” for everyone and spend time recently to analyze the “finally final draft”. For our part, we can be proud of our efforts. We can also appreciate the honest, straightforward, and open minded attitude of our local BLM office. Next, we wait for the “other shoe to fall”—as the “greenies” may challenge and sue the BLM because they have “not closed enough trails”. (The best part is that the “greenies” will indirectly be using our tax dollars to pay for the suing of the BLM, if in fact they do sue!) We can feel good in that we have done all we can at this point and we have done our part to help the local BLM keep our trails open until most of us either “wear out” or are too old to climb up into our “lifted Jeeps”. So—“are you ready for some 4 wheeling?” Jim Bowen In Memory of a dear friend and fellow Havasu 4 Wheeler Got Photos? Pat Trunk This is Bob Scholl, the Assistant Newsletter Editor (actually, I bring Wanda coffee and grief.) Have you ever been at a H4W function and whispered to a friend, asking them: “who is that person?” We all don’t have memories like an elephant and either don’t know or simply forget names and faces. I am very bad about this. So, I have volunteered to create and maintain a photo book for all of our Havasu 4 Wheeler members. The photo book will be posted on the password side of the H4W Web Site (www.havasu4wheelers.org.) The photo book will be most helpful for our trail bosses and organizers. In order to do so, I will need your help, please. Jeeping season in Havasu is soon approaching and our members are beginning to return to the area. So, I thought it would be a good time to send out a reminder for those members who have not yet provided a current photo of themselves and/or significant other. How fortunate we are that in our hearts we keep forever the memories of those we love… And the time we shared together. Thanks for your assistance. Contact Bob Scholl if you have any questions. “Sunshine” Havasu 4 Wheeler’s If you know of anyone in the club who might need some cheering up, please contact Trish Reister at trishreister@gmail.com She will be happy to send cards on behalf of the entire Havasu 4 Wheelers membership. I’m known around here as Paloma Wash Pete. This month I want to tell you about some dastardly happenings that have taken place at my old mine shack. You know the place; it’s where all you hungry Havasu 4 Wheelers go to feast on hot dogs every season. You folks are a close second cousin to “desert rats” so you’re always more than welcome to use my cabin - and I do appreciate how clean and tidy you leave things. You know my little shack sat lonely and undisturbed since the 1930’s until Early and Tom West stumbled upon it in the late 1960’s. Since then I made a few quiet and reclusive friends who have kept it from falling down. Now let me tell you about the recent troubles I’ve had. Seems some floor flushing skunk used my place and decided to make off with some of the “ornaments.” By that I mean the untold gobs of dollar bills that have been plastered all over the ceilings that started going up who knows when. The hooligan must be a local degenerate as the dollars bills, all covered with marker pen autographs, artwork, and such, have been turning up in town. Here’s what “it used to look like” with my US Federal Reserve wall paper. Now I know there is little to nothing I can do ‘cept fill that thieving SOB’s hide with buckshot if comes around again but we all know I aint that lucky. So the next time you’re in my neck of the woods please feel free to stop and check up on my old mine shack if you can. I appreciate it. Leave-er-rite – a variety of rock that is most commonly found as you step out of your jeep that has absolutely no value or collectors appeal that is best ignored or put in your buddy’s jeep when he’s not looking. Pyrite - the classic "Fool's Gold". There are other shiny brassy yellow minerals, but pyrite is by far the most common and the most often mistaken for gold. Whether it is the golden look or something else, pyrite is a favorite among rock collectors. It can have a beautiful luster and interesting crystals. It is so common in the earth's crust that it is found in almost every possible environment. It can be found on most 4X4 trails in our area. 2144 McCulloch Blvd. Lake Havasu City 928/852-2144 Hours: Mon - Sat. 7:30am-9:pm, Sun. 10:am-8:pm Call us for Special Orders: 928/854-2144 We can have it ready at sunrise! RATING DESCRIPTION 1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades. 2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving. 3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane. 3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop -offs and tight clearance between rocks. 3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated. 3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances. 4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage. 5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage. HAVASU 4 WHEELERS, PROUD MEMBERS A HAVASU 4 WHEELERS 2013 PUBLICATION LAKE HAVASU CITY, ARIZONA
