spring 2012 - Alabama Chapter of HFMA
SPRING 2012 P l anning for a Bright Future The 2012-2013 AL HFMA Leadership Team attended the HFMA National Leadership Training Conference in Ft Lauderdale, Florida in April. The event provided the forum for Chapter Leaders from across the country to share best practices and challenges with their peers in areas ranging from strategic planning, sponsorship and membership development to newsletter/communications, programs and finance. Representing the Alabama Chapter this year were Craig Tolbert (President-Elect), Richard Byerly (Secretary), Susan Cornejo (Programs), Christopher Allen (Membership) and Deb Miller (Newsletter/Communications). The team spent three days in information-packed sessions and also had the opportunity to do some planning as to how we can implement some of the great new things we discovered during the conference. We will unveil some of the great ideas during our Annual Meeting in June. One of the highlights from the meeting included honoring retiring HFMA President and CEO, Richard Clarke. Having led the HFMA since 1986, Clarke’s tenure saw membership leap 40%. During the same period, operating revenue for the organization grew from $6.2 million to more than $25 million and average hours of education grew 28%. Clarke spent his career aligning, educating, and motivating healthcare finance professionals to support health care that benefits communities, healthcare organizations, and the nation as a whole. He was recently named to Modern Healthcare magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. Dr. Clarke will be retiring July 31, 2012. RICHARD CLARKE, HFMA President and CEO “Dick is a visionary and passionate leader,” says HFMA’s 2011-12 Chair, Greg Adams. “He has devoted his professional life to this association and the profession of healthcare finance. His positive influence on the quality of healthcare services in this country has benefitted the industry and the public alike.” CLICK HERE!! Incoming HFMA Chairman, Ralph Lawson, introduced the 20122013 theme for the organization—Leadership Matters. The symbol in the theme logo is called an Inuksuk, which is a stone landmark used by peoples of the Arctic region of North America to provide direction and serve as a point of reference. In his introduction, Lawson asked the pointed question “Who better than you to solve the healthcare problem in America? Process by process, system by system, product line by product line...you have the take the first step.” So, who better than you? Ralph Lawson is the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Baptist Health South Florida, Inc.. Don’t miss the 2012 AL HFMA Annual Meeting! Find out more on page 2. Business Office Director Trinity Medical Center I began my healthcare career in 1988 at East Alabama Medical Center. I was a full time student at Auburn University and got a part time job in the ED registering patients. After several months, I realized I would be working the rest of my life, so I quit my job to enjoy my Senior year at Auburn. I received my Bachelors Degree from Auburn in 1989. While I only worked a few months at EAMC, it planted the seed for my future career in Healthcare. I started working at St Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham in 1991, after working at ITT Financial Services for a year and a half. I held a variety of positions in the Revenue Cycle over the course of 20 years with St Vincent's Health System. I am currently the Asst. Business Office Director of Patient Financial Services at Trinity Medical Center. I took this position in March 2012 and it has been a pleasure to be reunited with a few former co-workers. While healthcare is healthcare....it is both interesting and challenging to move from a non-profit to a for-profit environment. Every day we are given is a gift from God. I am proud to work in healthcare and to use my skills to help others. "This is the day which the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24 I have been happily married for 14 years, have two boys, and two Japanese Chin/Maltese mix puppies. I love to travel, cook, and spend time with family and friends. Most of my spare time is consumed with my kid's activities, and I treasure every minute of it. I am an active member of Bluff Park United Methodist Church. “As physicians, we have so many unknowns coming our way... Corporate and Provider Sponsorship Program If you are interested in being a corporate or provider Sponsor for the 2012-2013 calendar year...or are interested in participating in a Planning Committee One thing I am certain about is my malpractice protection.” Medicine is feeling the effects of regulatory and legislative changes, increasing risk, and profitability demands—all contributing to uncertainty. What we do control as physicians: our choice of a liability partner. I selected ProAssurance because they stand behind my good medicine. In spite of the maelstrom, I am protected, respected, and heard.
