Well , March is well underway and Keith And Colleen have jetted off (well with Keith
driving anyway) for a much needed holiday, heading to Adelaide for a Wedding and
we trust they will have an enjoyable trip and a safe journey and dodge the flood waters
out there.
Thank you to all the offers of help, if/when needed, that I have received in their absence. It
makes me realize how lucky I am to be here at Beachmere with such a wonderful group of
people.
We have seen lots of rain over the last couple of months, as has most of the country
which delays the advancement of construction about the place, but I am sure you will have
noticed the gardens and lawns are stating to turn around and look great and this will
continue over the next few months particularly as the weather cools a bit our intention to
re plant the entrance and the gardens in all communal areas to be revamped where
necessary. We will have some very colourful gardens looking very lush and fresh about the
place very soon. Also the resident’s garden patch now has a more permanent fence
complete with gate to keep the kangaroos out of the vegetables (cheeky devils they are!)
We had a great bowls day on Sunday 11th March, with Waterford bringing a bus of
bowlers up for a great days inter Palm Lake Resort Bowls day. Thank you to our fellow
resort counterparts and all the helpers on the day from morning tea, lunch prep, cooking
and cleaning , bar and organising for making the day so successful. I know they enjoyed
their day immensely and look forward to some follow up games in the near future. (They
may even move here)
Sales are really heating up with some more new faces due to come in to join our family in
the next few weeks, it is great to see the friendly reception from our residents sure to
make them feel comfortable and to help them settle in. The sales team are certainly kept
busy these days which is a great positive for the future!
Our new yoga classes are proving popular with our residents ready for a little gentle action
and the new Bridge Group has an eager rollup each session and much anticipation is
around with the new Stamping Up Classes due to start next week. There is no excuse for
idle hands & minds about the place.

Our newest residents to move in into our lovely resort are
Lynne & Les and their two babies Annabelle and Pixie
(from Left to right) who moved a couple of weeks ago.
They are almost locals as their previous home of 9 years
was at Kippa Ring.
We welcome them and look forward to getting to know
them when they have a chance to settle in. They already
enjoy the resident activities and Lynne joins in with the
new Yoga classes as well.

RESIDENT MEALS
Residents are now enjoying the luxury of having a cooked meal every Thursday at 12.30pm . Phil,
our chef, prepares his very popular roast dinners with gravy, fresh vegetables and all the
trimmings and his meals would not be complete without a lovely sweet to finish it off.
Our wonderful residents are eager to help by setting the tables and transforming the dining room
into a five star restaurant . Some of the meals we have been treated to include:
Roast Lamb, Gravy mint sauce Roast Beef, Gravy, Yorkshire Pudding Roast Chicken
Seasoning, Corned Beef and White Sauce and the list goes on all served with Baked
Vegetables and fresh garden greens.

Some of the sweets included Chocolate Pudding, Bread & Butter Custard, Apple Crumble ,
Fresh Fruit Salad and Ice cream just to name a few.
We have also been delighted to have guests amongst us, sampling a tiny part of living at
Beachmere Sands where our residents were only to happy to extend a hearty welcome and offer
our visitors a drink and chat.

Committee News
On Friday evening, Beachmere Committee members, along with Committee
representatives from other Palm Lake Villages were delighted to be invited to attend
the Official Opening of the brand new Palm Lake Aged Care Facility at Deception Bay.
It was quite a gala event attended by among other dignitaries, Chris Whiting
representing the Moreton Bay Regional Council. The official opening was carried out by
Dean Wells MLA, the State Member for Murrumba which takes in the Deception Bay area.
Mr Wells attributed much credit to the Elliott family for having the foresight and
determination to honour a promise to the residents of the Deception Bay Village to
deliver an aged care facility.
At the conclusion of the official proceedings, we were taken on a guided tour of the
$10,000,000 complex. It truly is a credit to the Palm Lake brand. It is situated directly
behind the Deception Bay Village, and is a very spacious, airy building with accommodation
for 66 residents. The facility caters for dementia, low care and high care patients. The
rooms are also spacious with access to outside gardens and sitting areas from every room.
There has been much thought put into the interior design and I can only describe it as
beautifully tasteful, exuding an aura of tranquillity with colour schemes changing cleverly
to assist with the needs of the residents in the different areas of care. Much effort has
been expended on respecting the memories of the senior citizens it will house, with
beautiful art depicting many favourite movie stars from the past. There are attractive sitting areas, and an amazing bright and colourful room in which residents’ guests can
enjoy a coffee. The very large entrance/dining room/lounge is exceptional The complex is
equipped with a library/computer room, beauty parlour, and the list just goes on.
To say we were impressed is an understatement and we can assure you that we came
away feeling very confident that our needs further down the track are in competent hands
as part of the Palm Lake family. We believe that our dear friend Ron Wheeler will be one
of the first residents to take up residence in the facility.
We were able to speak with Walter and Scott Elliott. Walter mentioned that they were
having difficulty and frustration with local government as far as the progress of the
development planned for Lot 106 is concerned. He advised that he had asked for Council
approval for the development of this block in August 2011 and has not yet received this
approval. He encouraged residents to use people power to attempt to move this issue
along. I assured him that the Committee would assist in any way it could.
Scott advised that as aged care is a new area into which Palm Lake is moving, the
company was keen to monitor the commercial outcomes of the Deception Bay venture and
that all being well, Palm Lake Beachmere Sands would see an identical complex built in the
future. They felt sales in our Village were progressing well and expressed the sincere hope
that all residents were happy with progress we are seeing in the Village.

TRIP ROUND UP AND PHOTOS

The trip started well and on time at 7:45 am from the clubhouse, we
made it as far as the front gate without incident when one of the passengers
on the bus discovered that he/she had forgotten to take his/her medication
prompting a return trip around the block.
We arrived at the Historic Gympie Rail Station in time for a coffee in the
old refreshment rooms before a bit of a browse around the station which was built in 1913, the
station building is a living tribute to Gympie and Cooloola's golden rail heritage which began in
the 1870's and is a link to the region's "Golden" past.
The train on which we were to travel (no.967) was built in 1950 by Walkers Limited in
Maryborough. 967 commenced operation with Queensland Railways in the same year and was
withdrawn from traffic in 1969. It was preserved at a park in Caloundra and moved to the Ghan
Society in 1985. 967 was purchased by Beaudesert Rail in 2000 and returned to service in 2003.
It was bought outright by the Mary Valley Heritage Railway in 2007.
The train departed from Gympie on time at 10:00am. Pulling out from the station bought
back plenty of memories for us all as we rattled and rolled our way through Gympie City and the
southern suburbs before crossing the Mary River and continuing into the Mary Valley where we
headed up the steep slopes of the river which affords great views of the surrounding farms, rainforest areas and rural life.
The tiny historic station and timber town of Kandanga provided a welcome morning tea
venue where we enjoyed some delicious home made pastries, entertainment and local hospitality
before again boarding the train and heading towards Imbil.
We arrived at the town of Imbil around midday and watched as the train crew unhitched
the locomotive and put it onto a steam operated turntable before re hitching it to the carriages
for the return journey. After checking out the market stalls in the centre of town we headed off
to the old Railway Hotel. Built in 1914 the hotel is typical of its era and has lots of very
interesting photo’s depicting the town’s early history. The hotel provided a good variety of delicious meals at a reasonable price.
On the return journey to Gympie the train stopped at the tiny station at Dagun for cheese
and wine tasting and some fresh pineapples from the road side stall before starting the home leg
of the journey. We arrived back in Gympie just in time for the rain to get serious for our dash to
the bus and our journey home.
