MARITIME CENTRE FOR AFRICAN DANCE
On the morning of Thursday, April 21, two performers from the Maritime Centre For African Dance attended
the grade 6-9 Physical Education classes, performing cultural dances for the students. Students were then
invited to participate in this energizing dance workshop and had a great time!
Grade 8B & Their Storybook Adventure
Ms. Shields (Acadia University Student Teacher) and Mrs. Crouse challenged their
Grade 8B English Language Arts students to create children`s books with a theme
and lesson that might send a positive message to a younger audience. The Grade 8
students worked diligently and creatively for three weeks to write, design, colour and
polish off ten great books to share with two classes at Annapolis East Elementary
School. The Grade 8 students were wonderful ambassadors of MRHS and enthusiastically shared their books with Mrs. Shields` Grade 4 class and Ms. Tidman`s
Grade 2/3 class. Mrs. Crouse and Ms. Shields would like to thank AEES for allowing
them to visit!
COUNSELLOR’S CORNER
Scholarship Reminders: Students in Grade 12 who receive scholarships and bursaries are reminded to bring the letter of notification to the School Counsellor. Not only do we want to congratulate the students, but we also need this information for the graduation ceremony. Also, new scholarships come into the Student Services office daily. Students are asked to continue to check in the
Scholarship Information folder in the outer office and on the school website. Be sure to listen to
morning announcements for developments.
Student Profiles: If you are a graduating student, make sure you have filled in your Student Profile form and passed it into the main office. We use this information to award local bursaries and
scholarships. Copies can be found in the Student Services office.
Acceptance into Post-Secondary Programs: Grade 12 students are asked that when they receive a letter of acceptance into post-secondary programs, to please inform Student Services. This
helps with awards as well as for our records.

RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY DAY
For the past number of years, a Respect for Diversity Day has been held for grade 8 MRHS students in April. Respect
for diversity encompasses acceptance and respect—teaching students that each individual is unique and to recognize
our individual differences.
On Thursday, April 28, students from MRHS—Jenna Gillis, Danielle Stewart and Danielle Prout started out the day
with an introduction on diversity. Special thank you to our guest speakers for the day: Kerry Johnson (Student Support Worker with AVRSB ); Pam Durling (Native Student Advisor with AVRSB ); the school’s Autism Learning Centre
led by Ms. Croft; and Lorraine Whitman-an Elder and Coordinator at Glooscap First Nations.
The Get Real team from Acadia University visited in the afternoon. Get Real is a movement of university students
across Canada who speak to high schools about “unlearning” LGBTQ discrimination and bullying, and creating an inclusive environment for every student.
BAT HOUSE DONATED TO MRHS
Keith Frittenburg, Grade 9 student at MRHS, recently donated a bat house to
MRHS that he made as a project with the 1st Kingston Scouting Troop. There
are six species of bats that can be found in Nova Scotia and one of them — the
little brown bat — is dying off at an alarming rate. Little brown bats are known
as the most efficient nocturnal insect-eating machines in nature. Scientists
across the Maritimes began monitoring the bats, since the white-nose syndrome was confirmed in New Brunswick in 2011.
Keith is pictured here presenting the bat house to Mr. Bower, Vice-principal.
